  • Pro Thru-Hike sleeping pad secrets revealed! Stop inflatable backpacking pad punctures.
Evazote Foam is a type of Zotefoam. The Evazote foam we use for the pads is the EVA30 (Zotefoams abbreviates it as EVA- EVA30, EVA50, etc.) Our EVA foam is from the Zotefoams US factory. We first started selling thin foam in about 2005 when I personally ran out of the old Chouinard/BD equipment 20X30 5mm blue foam pads and I found a source of about 1,000 similar pads (Plastizote I think) and offered them for about 5 yrs until we changed to the better and lighter the EVA 30 pads.

Good stuff, thank you for this. I wish every video about a product I'm interested would be this well thought of and provided for us who don't really know anything about it.

Great product Ron. Another great use, often overlooked, is to wrap the pad around your core as emergency insulation (especially if you are wet or soaked from unintentional immersion).

Using the EVA mats in all thicknesses for more than 10 years. Only the 1/8 inch pad (4mm) shows some serious wear by now. The 1/8 inch is still more durable than any air pad but it feels kind of flimsy. The thicker ones which I use most often (9mm and 14mm) still look as good as new. When the ground temperatures are below freezing its best to layer a thicker but lighter honeycomb structured foam mat on top.
Keeps you warm everywhere even at -30F and below for less than 2lbs of weight when layered like this:
    1. aluminum foil mat
    2. 1/4 inch EVA mat
    3. 1 inch honey comb mat
    4. thin fabric on top (wool or fur)

Hi, for honey comb mat do you mean a normal sleeping pad with the honey exagonal patern?

Putting the closed cell foam pad on top of the air pad gets the more efficient pad closer to the heat source, which results in less heat loss.
Btw: Thanks for the poncho/tarp. Have owned it for years and still use it for rain wear, but I now use a hammock so I don't have to crawl around on my old, arthritic knees anymore.

100% agreed! Closed cell foam pad on TOP of the air pad.

Have been looking for a light torso length inflatable pad, that is not too thick. 1 to 1.5" would be fine. Which pad is the yellow torso pad you flash ;-)

How does this differ from a closed cell pad which is as hard as the ground. Available at Wal-Mart for $10.

Well, for starters it only weighs about 3oz vs 1-2lbs for those type wally yoga mats. Snickers Dark is my favorite trail snack.

Lots of yoga mats are actually made from Eva.
Of you know the weight and dimension you can calculate the foam density.
      weight/volume
      usually they are Eva50

Those closed cell pad in wall mart i believe are made of Polyethylene and they insulate better because they don't compress and the close cell structure can therefore hold more air space. They tare and deform easy but they are light weight.
Eva are softer and insulate very well.
More durable and don't deform so when unrolled they stay that way.
