      @@John_Weiss The show is great, it takes the overarching plot and tells personal stories set within it. The book as written is unfilmable.

    • @John_Weiss
      @John_Weiss Год назад +20

      @@Matisaro It looks more like they took a Cliff-Notes Outline of the Foundation Trilogy, fed it through an Executive-Meddling Filter, then spat out something focus-group-friendly.
      The strength of the books was the fact that the Galactic Emperor was _completely irrelevant._ There was no "telepathy" [not in the original trilogy]; the "mentalics" of the Second Foundation was one of subtle non-telepathic psychological manipulation and non-verbal communication. Terminus was a scrappy little colony out in the middle of nowhere. All they had of the Seldon Plan was a vault of holographic messages.
      The real drama of the Foundation trilogy was in (1) The threats to the Terminus colony every few generations, who the players were on both sides, and how they were resolved; (2) The drama around the collapse of the Empire into warring barbarian kingdoms; (3) The attempt to reunify the Empire by the General-Belisarius-equivalent. Both that character and the historical Byzantine/Roman general, Belisarius, were unwaveringly loyal to the Empire, what it stood for, and what it had once been, and did not seek personal power. While that's rare, and is pooh-poohed these days, I find a figure like that inspiring and a much-needed role-model for our messed-up times.
      There's plenty of room for space-battle scenes, room for filling in the characterization of some flatter characters yet key-players.
      And, one of my favorite scenes in the books [which I read back in the 1980s, BTW] is the one where the first breakaway barbarian kingdom tries to conquer Terminus. The mayor of Terminus resolves it by manipulating the king into vaporizing his own head off in a fit of rage, frustration, and despair. "Violence is the 'Last Resort' of the Incompetent," is a recurring phrase of the first trilogy, one that few people truly understand, and one that could be well-portrayed, explained, and explored in the hands of a good writer [like, say, JMS].

      Bingo!
      Seldon, in the original trilogy, died quietly on Trantor of old age, with no fanfare, no drama, just a footnote made in the Encyclopedia Galactica by the researchers on Terminus. Terminus was an outpost/colony populated by scientists and scholars on an undesirable world. It didn't come under threat until a few generations after its founding, once the Empire started fragmenting.
      The whole thing sounds like a complete mess.

      The Galactic Emperor was never even seen in the books. _Which was the entire point:_ much like the Emperor of China or the (Western) Roman Emperor towards the end of those empires, the empire was being ruled indirectly by minions and bureaucrats, running on momentum, this leaving the emperor _mostly irrelevant._

      Make take on it, is that Cleon the First, was aware of a common occurrence in history, where a powerful and capable leader, is succeeded by their far less capable descendants and thus everything the leader built or achieved crumbles away. He felt he couldn't trust anyone else with the throne, so he finds away to remain on the throne forever

      @@humbertochavez6572 My take is that Cleon the first was a truly great leader, who achieved incredible things in his life time and was aware of this. But he was still human and as a human was a flawed being and in his hubris, decided he would rule for eternity.
      This DID initially have the positive effect of avoiding any possible succession crisis and made the Empire stable. After all, the Cleon "Brothers" do generally seem capable and kept things on an even keel for generations. But in time it also led to stagnation, since every Cleon, is an exact copy of the previous ones. They can't think differently or come up with anything new, so they didn't notice things were changing in the galaxy until the Sky was Falling on Trantor.
      Ironically, the "Corrupted" Cleon clones, could have potentially been something that could have saved the empire, since they are subtly different from all the others that went before and could potentially be able to think differently, be able to break out of the box they have been stuck in for centuries. But sadly, they almost certainly won't.
      The current Brother Day, is almost certainly going to be the Last Cleon and now the instability that Cleon the First so feared, is going to come to the fore and the empire won't be resilient enough to resist the shocks.

I tend to agree but the answer was not to mess with the entire plot and characters' gender, but to never film it in the first place. I've read the entire saga 4 times in my lifetime and in hindsight, it would have been better leave it to our imaginations. Season 1 was nearly unwatchable. Forget the series people and read the books. They are richer than any series or FX can portray.

    • @John_Weiss
      @John_Weiss Год назад +1

      Read the original trilogy, instead.
      It was based on the breakup of the Roman Empire.
      The Foundation was, in the original books, the _Encyclopedia Galactica_ Foundation, located on Terminus, a colony in the middle-of-nowhere and populated by scientists and scholars. Seldon wasn't a main character except in the first few chapters, his death _of old age_ being noted in the Encyclopedia.
      The important plot-points in the original Trilogy were the crises faced by Terminus every few centuries, and how they cleverly overcame them. Without an army. "Violence is the 'Last Resort' of the Incompetent," is an important saying of Seldon's, the Foundation's, and the overarching plot. It's something misunderstood yet illustrated indirectly by Asimov throughout the Trilogy.
      Lastly, just as the Eastern Roman [Byzantine] Empire had General Belisarius in the 6th Century, Asimov gave the crumbling Galactic Empire similar "General-Belisarius-figure". The historical Belisarius was a loyal servant of the Empire and of his emperor, Justinian the Great. He was a brilliant General who retook the lost North-African provinces and the south of Italy[!]. And what did Belisarius want out of it? The Restoration of the Empire. There are, in history, every once in a while, Admirable Figures who Do the Right Thing.
      And I remember, from when I read it decades ago, that you _wanted_ to root for this General who was trying to hold the Galactic Empire together, while also wanting him to fail because he was a threat to The Foundation.
      The fact that the show has made The Clone Emperors the Main Characters and relegated The Foundation to Cheesy Irrelevance says everything I need to know about this … "adaptation."

    There are so many things out of context that the whole recap makes no sense. Many important things are mentioned but not explained and just thrown in. I hate to be so negative but as a recap to fully comprehend season one this is totally useless...

    More writers that didn't read the source material, I suppose. meh...

    My god, they completely mangled the original books … and completely unnecessarily, at that.
    The original Foundation Trilogy was more than ready for a show, would require very, very few tweaks to the original plot, and _still_ had space in its plot to insert action and intrigue in the form of the first 2 centuries of the breakup of the Empire.
    Well, this saves me from wasting time watching what isn't even an adaptation, but an idea based on a summary written on a dirty paper-napkin of Isaac Asimov's actual Foundation series.

    What a mess. This recap reaffirms to me that this show has very good ideas (the Cleons, making some characters female, the visuals), but is a mess of lazy plots. Seldon resurrected?? Gtfo.

    What the hell was Asimov thinking ? Talk about complicating a thin-as-gruel tale with ridiculous names and ideas. I think stories like the Three Body Problem are much better.
