Nobody really talks about yokes and airbags. A steering wheel actually supports the airbag as a round skeleton at the back side when it is deployed. This way the airbag can actually function as a smooth cushion and support the driver’s head. But if there is no round steering behind it then the driver’s head will just keep traveling towards with the airbag as there is nothing behind the airbag to stop the movement. Drivers don’t necessarily always hit their heads into the center of the steering.

I'm expecting a new steering wheel design to come soon enough that will be a hybrid multi-functional wheel, in that it can lower its top ring sections to form the shape of a yoke, and then can revert back the top sections to complete a full wheel shape. I can see Mercedes doing that, but it would be a cool concept I think.
As usual, great review Thomas ! 👍 I like Toyota philosophy : designed and producted for durability. For me, the range is a false problem with EV : 90% of the 30000km driven with my RAV 4 PHEV are pure EV with 85km of range.
Thomas, great review, beautiful color and the steering wheel is something I would consider. Interesting insights and a drive filled with information. Many thanks for all you do. BTW, what is the location of the RZ450e test? Thank you.
Because of the shape of the dashboard of the Prius, I assume it will be available on the refresh in a few years! This + maybe some solid state battery, and we have the perfect Prius!
Interestingly, I notice the Japanese drive reviews of the RZ have the 14" screen showing a 10 secs LIVE front camera view as the vehicle is coming to a stop or taking off which is pretty cool, but this feature doesn't appear to be available in any other markets.
Great detailed review as always Yes this EV wont be for everyone especially hardcore EV enthusiast its more of a transition EV for us old skool ICE enthusiast. When it gets launched in my country i will place an order no doubt. I dont like the rims of the 18" wheels however for range purposes dont have a choice. I also keen on the OMG steer-by-wire but 2025 is a long way to wait so will settle for the classic steering wheel. Exterior colour white my first choice maybe ether as second choice. Interior hazel suede is a must.
Great Video. Your reviews are just brilliant. Thank you . I ordered this car on a fantastic lease deal too good to miss . It was going to be my first EV and my only chance to get into such a premium brand. I got cold feet hearing all the negative comments about the car . And in general just going EV. Scared me. With a small child too I was worried for long trips. As it’s a lease we do not qualify for the Lexus reserve. I’m so gutted really 😢. But it’s not completely cancelled they said. Im now trying to find another car to replace the RZ Order. Im so confused.
Other people wrote here about the moose test behavior. Also, even though it has esp, but how would it behave in a power slide like on a very slippery surface, when you have to catch the car with a wheel, it would be interesting to know.
So what you're saying is that the acceleration time from 0-100km in Normal mode vs Sports Mode is identical. The difference is how it gets there due to different power curve.
Nothing is wrong, but from what I can tell from watching the video, the yoke is a more "quality of life" enhancement. Not that the regular round steering wheel is bad, it's just something that is becoming more and more outdated, since a yoke not only helps you see the dash better, which has become more advanced over the last decade, but also reducing the amount of actual steering you have to do, in order to steer the car. Sure, I would miss the feel you get of the car through the steering wheel, and be anxious about the "by wire" part, in case something breaks, how would the car behave, potentially lock the wheels hard left? This is just the beginning, and we will see yokes more and more in the future, once things gets fixed, iteration by iteration (such as the turning indicators, which this is a great improvement over the Tesla). Regular round steering wheel isn't bad, but the yoke looks promising and adds some quality of life improvements, in my opinion :)
@@kaare1992 I see this as an advancement. Less movement makes for more efficiency and more precision. I'm just not sure I like a lack of a mechanical backup.
@@benjaminsmith2287 Yep, my thoughts too. Sure there is another backup implemented, but it’s still not mechanical. But I’m sure they’ll figure it out soon enough, so it’s trustworthy.

$60,000 or more in the USA with a stated range in the brochure of 196 mi. You would have to be an idiot to accept that as a decent buy no matter how much you enjoyed the drive-by-wire experience. A proper range is imperative! 250 mi per charge would be the lowest I would accept. I was actually impressed by the RZ until you stated the battery size. As always Thomas, very nice, complete review.
Agreed.... In North America, the Tesla Model Y Performance is a much better EV with longer range, better public charging infrastructure, and over-the-air updates.
The average American drives less than 30 miles (48 km) per day, while other studies have put that number closer to 40 miles, so plenty of milage in the car for the average user.
@@autogefuehl I tend to agree with you, the car is interesting. Actually writing 196mi in a brochure is kinda shocking. I'm thinking their battery tech is so far behind that a bigger battery would just make it too expensive. Surprised it came from Toyota Corp as I thought they were into hydrogen cell technology. Anyway, nice to see another EV available, the more the merrier. I'm eagerly awaiting the Chinese intro into the US market. They have many very interesting designs.
Peugeot 3008 has had a small steering wheel flat top and bottom for years and it drives a treat. This wheel looks an advancement on that and should be fun to drive.
Large Lexus EV with the battery sized for Kia Niro. It just kills all sales. Maybe it's even the purpose. This should have had the same battery size as BMW i4. Maybe Toyota / Lexus should go the route of making long-distance PHEVs like 150km per charge and find their niche in there. And come to BEVs when they have some knowledge at their disposal and a dedicated platform they just found out while studying a Model Y
I do a lot of detailing on my own car, and I'm surprised the paint of this demo car is already full of micro-scratches. Take a look at the rear part of the door at 2:20 and 2:29. Clear sign of not washing the car correctly, this will eventually dull the colour and shine of the paint.
Tomas….a very good review. It answers many questions and why I might want a Lexus. The steering options are not available in the U.K. but I would not buy the Yoke because of its compromises at higher speeds…it is just too unnatural but would be perfect for taxi drivers! I guess this is the best build BEV so far and can understand the battery/range/charging philosophy but it suits a private owner rather than long distance driving. It is a good choice…but a very expensive one. Hmm…good n so many ways but like every other Lexus, is it a car to like or a high quality mobility device and that I’m not so sure. 🤔🤔🤔😬🙂
The disadvantage would be in the case of sudden unexpected situation when you want avoid accident. If you react fast to that situation the car will not react accordingly.
I think an apt analogy to this debate about which type of steering is better, is casual people that use mouse acceleration (even unknowingly) with high pointer sensitivity on their computers. They like how they don't have to move their hand as much, even though the precision suffers. Try playing some FPS games with that, it'd be a mess. That's why pro players turn mouse acceleration off and use low sens. with big mousepads. Consistency in control is everything. Of course you can get used to anything. But variable ratio steering systems (no matter whether directly connected, or steer-by-wire) always introduce inconsistent steering angle across the range of the speed of the vehicle. That's something that will always deem these systems unpopular among car enthusiasts who value car control. That said, Lexus' implementation of this yoke is possibly the best I've seen. No doubt it will find its happy customers and perhaps eventually even displace classic steering system in this car segment.
Does the varied steering speed introduce a safety issue if you need to swerve in an emergency? (I don’t know because I don’t drive - just interested in EV designs)
Let's make it official. The round steering wheel is just ridiculous! 😆 I would love the yoke to be adopted by more companies. The Tesla is kinda half-way there it seems, but the way Lexus (Toyota) implemented it seems awesome! The only thing I wonder is if you're in a crisis situation and avoiding an animal for example, and you put a full lock on the steering wheel to avoid it, would the front wheels go full lock as well? I imagine that would result in a crash right away...
Thomas are you guys on Twitter ? If so, Can you please update your link! Great and beautiful explanation on steer by wire and comparison with Yoke! I am going to share this on twitter/Tesla
No. Who would seriously buy a 60 k vehicle and drive with limited acceleration and limited speed and no heating ? That mode is rather saying “our battery is too small” …
It was a sunny day, and I was driving my belovet Lexus to the beach. As I tried to signal a turn, my blinkers suddenly stopped working! I popped the hoot and found the culprit - my blinker fluid had expired, and my car had blown a fuse. Who knew blinker fluid had an expiration date?
I don't like the nose of this car (Beluga whale inspired?), but some other bits are really well done. Electrochromic roof glass, steering (not sure how it would do the moose test), crisp 360 camera view. Meanwhile Tesla lately underdeliver on these aspects...
I like the design of the car, but I don't like the "gaming wheel". For longer trips I like to be able to let my hands glide around the wheel for added comfort, as keeping the hands in the same position is not comfortable. I also find it perfectly OK to set the speed limit to 160, only on the German Autobahn is it allowed to drive faster (in some places) and if EVs are about the environment, then preserving battery is equally important to saving fuel.
I think the car looks a lot better than the Toyota on the outside. The interior is best in class I think what I can see from the video. The electric part of the car is disappointing, in terms of charging speed and also consumption (if it's the same as the Toyota). Also related to longevity, I know there are Tesla taxi's with huge KM figures (like 600.000) with still good battery life, and Tesla really hammers their batteries when charging. I have the underbelly feeling that Toyota/Lexus battery technology simply can not handle the charging speeds so the marketing department spins it into "reliability" benefits haha
It wouldn't surprise me if in a year or so, when they have more battery usage and degradation data, a software update gets released that frees up more of the battery capacity. And boy do they really need to do that. I could accept a car with +/- 350km range, IF it would charge quickly enough. However, as it stands, short range + slow charging = few sales.
Thomas what is Toyota and Lexus obsession with the black wheel arches marking the vehicle look as if it's all terrain, I am not a fan of their styling at all.

they are trying to make an EV that's actually better than a gasoline hybrid for the enviroment, only company that does this except for mazda
@@Yanate1991you understood their move. They could put bigger batteries, but that's a lot of dead weight for a majority of users who actually charge home overnight.
A really stunning vehicle most definitely! Yes please 👌👌👌
Aside from range being near the bottom of industry EVs, no regen breaking, slow 0-60, really liked its luxury features.
Nice Video , Thomas. From Japan.
Thanks 🙏

I'm expecting a new steering wheel design to come soon enough that will be a hybrid multi-functional wheel, in that it can lower its top ring sections to form the shape of a yoke, and then can revert back the top sections to complete a full wheel shape. I can see Mercedes doing that, but it would be a cool concept I think.
As usual, great review Thomas ! 👍 I like Toyota philosophy : designed and producted for durability.
For me, the range is a false problem with EV : 90% of the 30000km driven with my RAV 4 PHEV are pure EV with 85km of range.
Thanks 🙏
Thomas, great review, beautiful color and the steering wheel is something I would consider. Interesting insights and a drive filled with information. Many thanks for all you do. BTW, what is the location of the RZ450e test? Thank you.
Because of the shape of the dashboard of the Prius, I assume it will be available on the refresh in a few years! This + maybe some solid state battery, and we have the perfect Prius!
The seats are lovely
Interior hazel suede is a must.
wow the steering system is really cool
It will be interesting to see how the steering handles a moose test....
The RX should adopt this RZ design
Great Video. Your reviews are just brilliant. Thank you . I ordered this car on a fantastic lease deal too good to miss . It was going to be my first EV and my only chance to get into such a premium brand. I got cold feet hearing all the negative comments about the car . And in general just going EV. Scared me. With a small child too I was worried for long trips. As it’s a lease we do not qualify for the Lexus reserve. I’m so gutted really 😢. But it’s not completely cancelled they said. Im now trying to find another car to replace the RZ Order. Im so confused.
Thanks! Feel free to recommend our channel :-) And enjoy!
I like the copper colour but there is no rear wiper?
Other people wrote here about the moose test behavior. Also, even though it has esp, but how would it behave in a power slide like on a very slippery surface, when you have to catch the car with a wheel, it would be interesting to know.
If you have input lag in any controller, it is impossible to catch a slide. ( Judging by sim racing )
So what you're saying is that the acceleration time from 0-100km in Normal mode vs Sports Mode is identical. The difference is how it gets there due to different power curve.
Yes
Interesting detail also on the door handles. That said, not a yoke fan but that's just personal preference.
This car can truly be called a luxury premium, unlike the Teslas. Tesla is more like driving a Ford Cortina vs an current S-Class!
Is it really necessary to castrate the steering wheel? What was accomplished by that?
What's wrong with regular round steering wheels?
See driving part of this video where we compare both concepts with pros and cons
If Thomas every reviews a Volkswagen polo harlequin, his wardrobe will explode 😂
Great looking Lexus btw ! Unsure about the rear badge tho ?
Steer by wire with the yoke settings but a normal steering wheel will be perfect for me ;)
Now it have been one year,we did not see the steer-in wire ,Yoke steering wheel? When it will come out ?
wow those beige fiber back seats look mega comfortamble
Toyota should get this steering wheel in supra it will be so cool , it will feel like F1 car inside 😀 it's the yoke steering wheel done perfect in the first try
I wonder how the steer-by-wire perform in the moose test.
Cheers m8! Yeah the range is a problem
This would be perfect premium EV with 50 % more battery size
Is it comfortable on the road as the Mercedes EQE SUV? Same level?
Peugeot 3008 has had a small steering wheel flat top and bottom for years and it drives a treat. This wheel looks an advancement on that and should be fun to drive.
Indeed. Here it is more about the steering input
This is normal for car event cars because they are often cleaned on location with microfibre towels while the paint is still dirty
Thanks! Will be available in 2025 indeed
A like the light blue colour.
The disadvantage would be in the case of sudden unexpected situation when you want avoid accident. If you react fast to that situation the car will not react accordingly.
I love your channel , I don't understand why it seems that you're struggling with subscribers number ....
Thanks m8! Please share and recommend 😎
I like the Lexus but not the Steering Wheel. Good test as always. Take care
Love it 👍🏻
I think an apt analogy to this debate about which type of steering is better, is casual people that use mouse acceleration (even unknowingly) with high pointer sensitivity on their computers.
Good point
After every door closing sound test I think Thomas will close the door again right afterwards for another listen.
I have never cared for the huge grill. I wish this trend would go away.
Dark grey for me please Thomas !
I wonder how well that steering works on snow (or ice).
Does the varied steering speed introduce a safety issue if you need to swerve in an emergency? (I don’t know because I don’t drive - just interested in EV designs)
Seen the whole driving part?
The Austin allegro went for a different shaped stirring wheel in the 70s and we now want costumers though of that car
Thomas, if you release hold of the steering yoke does it go to the neutral middle position similar to mechanical steering system?
No, there is no torque steer. You have to return it to neutral position yourself. Good question that was indeed.
like in dash infotainment. Plz ask to move shifter to dash.
Reminds me of Raties Rides - to the door panel
Team Thomas yes
Thomas are you guys on Twitter ?
If so, Can you please update your link!
Great and beautiful explanation on steer by wire and comparison with Yoke! I am going to share this on twitter/Tesla

@autogefuehl
Did you guys try range mode?
No. Who would seriously buy a 60 k vehicle and drive with limited acceleration and limited speed and no heating ? That mode is rather saying “our battery is too small” …
@@autogefuehl Just wanted to see what it was like in RWD only and if it had enough power for most situations
Will the wheels fall off?????
They use different clamps for the wheels now
It was a sunny day, and I was driving my belovet Lexus to the beach. As I tried to signal a turn, my blinkers suddenly stopped working! I popped the hoot and found the culprit - my blinker fluid had expired, and my car had blown a fuse. Who knew blinker fluid had an expiration date?
I wonder who started this hoax
That headlight control dial looks lile something from a 80s stereo radio 🙈
I don't like the nose of this car (Beluga whale inspired?), but some other bits are really well done. Electrochromic roof glass, steering (not sure how it would do the moose test), crisp 360 camera view.
Meanwhile Tesla lately underdeliver on these aspects...
Close your eyes and it sounds like jurgen klopp is now reviewing cars 👍🏻
haha =)
@@autogefuehl no offence was meant on the off chance your a Dortmund fan 👍🏻
I like the overall design but there’s something off about the front end but I can’t put my finger on it 🤔
So what is the actual range of this Lexus ?
I couldn't hear it in video, only kW/h .
based on Thomas review, range is aprox. 320-355 km (64kWh Net Cpcty)
@@flo_fet Thank you, when did he mention that ? Didn't hear it for some reason

When you buy Tesla you buy technology. When you buy Lexus you buy reliability and luxury. It is as simple as that.
Jesus christ you are a good looking man! Good job 👍
Thanks m8 😊
I like the design of the car, but I don't like the "gaming wheel". For longer trips I like to be able to let my hands glide around the wheel for added comfort, as keeping the hands in the same position is not comfortable.
I also find it perfectly OK to set the speed limit to 160, only on the German Autobahn is it allowed to drive faster (in some places) and if EVs are about the environment, then preserving battery is equally important to saving fuel.
From the inside it looks as if the door goes very high up with just a little window above
schade haben sie keine Ski Durchreiche. bsp 40-20-40 Aufteilung.
Not a fan of this type of steering wheel on raod cars. But this one seems reasonable compared to the tesla yoke
Yoke. Why stop there? Why not a triangle shaped steering "wheel"? Not quite right angle. More like curved at each of the three points.
Check out the Yoke review on Thomas's channel Autogefühl seems Toyota knows how to make a Yoke the right way!
Hi Thomas!
hey m8 !
Why there is milk inside?
? You mean these bright water packs?
@@autogefuehl yes, looks like milk to me :D
hehe
I bet that steering chews tyres up quicker.
I have the underbelly feeling that Toyota/Lexus battery technology simply can not handle the charging speeds so the marketing department spins it into "reliability" benefits haha
yeah...
I think the beige interior looks good, and its animal cruelty free but Thomas is all the interior Vegan?
Whole interior is vegan in every trim. Great job by Lexus.
