Excellent review. I drove the Subaru solterra as a loaner car and loved it, quiet, smooth, refined. I drove in fall north east weather on cruise control, no A/C. The displayed range was 288 miles (x 8/5 for km). Not strict one pedal driving but I liked the regen braking
Note that Toyota later confirmed that the net / usable capacity is not 71 kWh but 64 kWh; that means that our two test results of 25 kWh / 100 km or 2,5 miles / kWh (270 km / 170 miles) and 22 kWh/100 km or 2,8 miles / kWh (320 km 200 miles) would mean even reduced range to 260 km / 160 miles in the 1st test and 290 km / 180 miles in the 2nd test. Still all results that are comparable and you can calculate with a winter range for less than 300 km and less than 200 miles. Our summer time expectation is 400 km / 250 miles, updates to follow, e.g. also with the test of the brother Lexus RZ 450e.
When details of 4X were revealed last spring, that 64 kWh value was often noted as capacity. That was indeed the usable amount. It was unfortunate when many switched to gross without stating they were doing so. Confusing matters more is how the various estimate systems do such a poor job of informing people what all the different numbers mean and how much they can be influenced by driving conditions. Oh well.
@@Moody_Blues_ 22- 25 kWh/100km winter??? In video part Agile driving: numbers was 26 - 29 kWh/100km at speed around 70 km/h and temperature was around +4'C on wet asphalt, +4'C isn't even real winter temperature. This car range reduces greatly when temperature is below zero Celsius. I have seen test that consumption is over 30 kWh/100km when temperature is around -6'C which still isn't very cold.
We live in the Netherlands and ordered this car with the intent of using it for land trips to Scandinavia. We test drove it and I really liked the handling.
I took delivery in May and after the recall got it back in November 2022. Drove it 1000mi through California on thanksgiving weekend and in 50-66F temps I was able to achieve 3.2mi/kwh over the course of 191mi which would have made for a theoretical range of 211mi with the nominal capacity of 66kwh. 70-73mph on HWY 99. It definitely gets better in warm weather. Charging at 60F on the Elk Grove EA peaked at 57kw. Fastest I've seen my CATL battery car charge is 87kw. I like it over all.
Funny I used to live in midtown downtown Sac. 😁 Do you also take your car to Maita Toyota for service? They took care of my Scion for 11 years. If I still lived there, I’d have bought this with driving to LT in snow conditions in mind. 🤩🌨️☃️
I've been thinking about buying it, but it's just not as good as the Model Y yet. Charging and range just don't come close. But it drove really nice, acceleration was decent (nothing like the model Y though), and comfort on ride was superior. I actually really like the inside and the exterior, more than the model Y. But now, it's basically the same price and just doesn't measure up. It has better ground clearance that MY, but you can add 2 in spaces for over 8 inches of ground clearance. Just not quite there yet
I truly appreciate the decision made on this shoot, the location is beautiful as was the location chosen to film the A8 and S8. The choices for locations are excellent Autogeful and the quality of the film is too. Love the lingering shots so that we can absorb the vehicle shots from many angles too. Great work!!!!
Woke up this morning to 32” of new snow overnight (northern Ontario), I have the Subaru version, got it on the road before the plow. I can only put the handling down to the actual weight of the vehicle as it handled the snow better than my Outback. No slippage at all at 100Km/h, my Outback would be being pushed around a little at that speed and depth of snow, especially in heavy snow like it is.
Does your outback have X mode or dual X mode? Since the solterra has the latter I'm presuming that would have made a difference apart from the weight distribution due to the battery
Ebil24 in Norway could only get the bz4X battery to take 60kWh, so I don’t believe Toyota’s numbers on net capacity. They also only got 307km range on their test, which for a car with a 74kWh battery is hopeless. It also charges to 100% at snail’s pace
did two range tests, check timecodes. Recharging is possible 150 kW when battery is at 20 degrees, even in winter. You just have to drive it that warm that it is at about 20 degrees Celsius. If it is colder, it will indeed just charge some 45 kW or smth. I agree that the winter range is not sufficient as I concluded
@@autogefuehl your range test looked like it only calculated consumption and then extrapolated range based on stated net capacity. But there is doubt about the net capacity of the battery as they could only consume and charge back 60 kWh not 74
@@autogefuehl thank you Thomas, you are always so thorough 👍 I don’t think that’s good enough range for a €47.5k car and I would be annoyed about having a buffer of 7.4kWh of battery that I couldn’t use when other manufacturers let you use more of the battery. If I’m buying a new car, I want it to work optimally for me, I’m not bothered about the 2nd & 3rd owners
Toyota will really have to step up the pace. Range and charging performance are "meh" at best, Hyundai and Kia's electric cars are leaving Toyota in the dust in almost all aspects.

Mr. Thomas, for a long time I enjoy your extensive reviews. Thank you. Is it interesting for you and the viewers if you also show how much the steering wheel turns? I find it comfortable when it turns not more than 380 degrees to each side. Greetings
Yes, this is a really good solution. I go 20km full speed on the Autobahn then quick charging is possible. Come on only 20km this ain't matter. 😉 I love BEVs
Excellent review nice bz4x i owned a venza hybrid limited 2022 model i really love it good on gas very comfortable and quiet lexus like interior materials thanks for your video take care bye from milton Ontario Canada 🇨🇦
Hi, Thomas - I watched your review of this car before the recall - Your explanation of the fix that Toyota did on the wheel nuts is excellent. Keep up the good work.
Might be just me but I was so happy to see a new EV with traditional circular steering wheels and then a few minutes into the video a yoke is being mentioned and now I'm annoyed. Why? What benefit can yokes offer?
It's a variable steer by wire system that makes maneuvering the car a breeze. It's way different than what is in the Tesla Model X and S. But it is an option.
@@benjaminsmith2287 Thanks. No issues about the steer by wire stuff in general but what is the benefit of the yoke shape? It feels that it can be quite unsafe, especially in emergency situations.
@@BartokAndras Fair point. My guess is the visibility to see the instrument binnacle when at least going straight or at small angles. I prefer round wheels myself. Not even flat bottom ones, round ones.
After watching EV reviews including yours I picked one up! I tortured it in the first week going from snow (in June!) in the BC mountains now to 26c back in Surrey this week. Mileage is interesting, I lost quite a bit driving on the steep grades in the mountains here, and having big bear passengers cut back the range quite a bit too, so there was a lot of charging on this road trip. By myself in slower highway and city traffic I'm well over 400km range for the FWD (about 14-15kwh/100km)
Love this presentation and your accent. Hopefully there will be some cheaper variants. MG is good at selling cheap evs. I've decided to postpone getting a new car for another 2 years, since Toyota is late too the EV party.
We have a 2022 Prius Prime as a company car. This feels nearly identical, just a slightly different body style and EV vs PHEV. Feels a bit phoned in by Toyota, tbh.
On the Toyota RAV4 Prime the charging port is on the right rear. If a person had bought a Prime, then traded it in for a BZ4X, they would not be happy.
@@omelborpon3159 That's why I will probably put my charging unit on the ceiling above the car. This way I can route the plug cable whichever way I need.
I have come to the conclusion that the BZ-4z is not fully baked. It's missing many features that an EV should have, such as map guidance to charging stations.
Depends on your perspective, 4X is better off than what VW delivered for ID.4 in terms of software. Thanks to the Prime vehicles and the EV convert models, we find that Toyota invested a lot into operational detail. It's all hidden, so subtle it gets overlooked, but the flawless electric-only operation of Prius Prime over the past 6 years should get some recognition... clearly, that was fully baked.
THANKS, ab min 4.40 am interessantesten für mich, habe ihn genau so bestellt . Wintertest ist auch ok, bekomme meinen demnächst, und es wird sicherlich in Germany auch mal Winter….
Hello, I have test driven the BZ4X twice so far. Everything is great about the car. But the consumption is very high and the battery runs out very quickly. As you have a good contact with Toyota Germany I would like to ask you to forward this feedback so that an update can be made to the cars and this problem has been fixed.
We have 3 of these for sale at my store. Nobody wants them. All want the RAV4 Prime. Where I live, people still afraid of full electric. Like they're worried about having to stop to charge. What's silly, is most people rarely drive that far more then a handful or less times a year. All the money they would save on petrol, they could rent a car for those days they do drive far.
I would imagine the re-sale value on the RAV4's will be significantly higher compared to the bZ4X. That is certainly going to influence people's purchasing decisions.
Yea but those handful of longer journeys will be a real problem if the charging network is anything like the UK. The media here is full of tales of woe from EV drivers (including Tesla) who had to queue for hours to charge over Xmas. As for hiring an ICE car, have you checked hire costs recently? Your customers are right
Could you please also do a range test with FWD version. I think many like me are going to opt for FWD due to the extra range and charging speed. Thanks a lot for your efforts! One of the genuine reviewer on RUclips. Kudos!!
Test drove a 2wd version while my rav4 was in for a service. I completely agree with you about the cars driving dynamics and I liked it. The deal breaker for me was the coupe styling on the back. I have a golden retriever and the rav accommodates large dogs well but the bz4x is little cramped in the boot for him. Also I agree the rear seats are too low. I've put a deposit down for a rav4 phev instead. Hopefully should arrive by .May. Great video, thanks.
I feel like there are too many compromises with this EV from Toyota when compared to EVs from other manufacturers. No frunk, no glove box, no 800 volt architecture, no vehicle to grid capability, charge speed just average and range just average, interior design and materials just average, software not unique or revolutionary, No OTA capability etc., etc., etc.!
My range testing on the FWD (LE in Canada) was very similar at +8 C mostly highway driving, I got about 265km of range. It's supposed to have better range than the AWD. The defrost was necessary to run every 20 mins or so, and the range dropped much more than I expected with the 'efficient' heat pump. No additional cabin heat was added. The estimated time to charge on L3 is also totally inaccurate. Although it changed at up to 100kW at 8 C (FWD) once at 80% it dropped to 8kW but still said 30mins to full, then 25 mins later, 25 mins to full....hhhmmmm.
I like the grey colour with the black wheel arch, the white if I had the base model, and its great that the seats are cruelty free, and I am not sure about the yoke S/wheel but what about the steering wheel is that animal free Thomas.
@@autogefuehl Thanks thats good that Toyota have gone Animal Cruelty Free on this model they now need to do this for all new cars they make. in the future. But it was a great review as always, and i am looking forward to some new small EVs coming out this year on Autogefuhl of course.
"We know that Yoda builds great hybrid vehicles." 😮 I wasn't aware. I know he's a great Jedi Master but he builds cars too?! Amazing. No end to the little fella's talents.
You are correct about the ev side of the car. Its like Toyota took a petrol car and just put a battery in it. I have cancelled my bz4x order, and I think ,i am going to buy a id4. Greetings from Denmark.
Thomas, your pose in the thumbnail pic for this video with your arms in that position made me think of the end of the 1987 Robocop movie as the bad-ol' Dick Jones fell from the window :-D Thanks for the vid, and Happy New Year to u & the crew.
I'm sure it is a lovely vehicle....It's a Toyota....And I'd love to have one even with the lower range and unacceptable charging times for the right price which for me would be around $30,000 or less....But that price tag of $50,000 coupled with the unacceptable stats for that price is a nonstarter for me.
Yeah honestly I bought one and the downside is if you don't have a home charging station. It's limited to your daily commute. The price is a little high compared to other ev's that have a 300+ range. Toyota needs to bring about an update to the range of the vehicle, I hope so
@Ricky Gill I was implying the fact that the miles outweighs having to charge it. Generally I can get about 200 miles without having the a/c or heater on. Now realistically i habe to use the a/c so that lowers it to 179 miles.I would like to be able to go to work where there's no charge station get lunch drive to pick up my wife and still have a few extra miles without having to be at 20 miles left. There's no room for those extra emergency tasks without having to charge immediately. Now if you look at it long term, battery efficiency will lower I don't know about how much but it's an inconvenience. Where you could get a 300+ ev cheaper price and not have to worry about charging immediately. There should be legal actions where a minimum of 300 miles has to be met to sell evs.
@@alane3985 Good news then, an update is coming in May that will improve nearly every downside of thia vehicle - it will adress charging times and give you 15% more range with better range calculation and so on.
You wanted to be precise on energy consumption and battery range to dissipate rumors and that's your usual exhaustive precision we appreciate. These numbers are not very impressive and a little under par considering other propositions. Toyota want extreme longevity for batteries with means other manufacturer with better numbers don't care ? We will see... What is strangely deceiving is the lack of a route planner to charge (more often...) this battery. I think for the moment the best offer is a pure hybrid, soon with quick charge solid state battery (2025 ?) that will be used during 70% of driving time. BTW I'am proud owner of a 2002 Prius with a perfectly healthy hybrid battery...
HAPPY NEW YEAR THOMAS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ You might give us some news about these amazing sports cars coming soon : 1. The next Audi TT will be electric. A release date ? 2. The next Boxster Cayman will it be petrol or electric ? A release date ? 3. The next Z4 will it be electric ? is it true that BMW wants to stop Z models ? THANKS
They solved the wheel problem quickly!? It took them many months! I’m sure it was a top priority and they had their very best interns working on it. But I can’t help but think that if that had happened to the Camry or RAV4 their top engineers would have come up with a solution in 1 month if not 1 week
Also bear in mind the battery warranty stipulates in the fine print the car has to be serviced at a Toyota service centre for the entire 10 years or the battery warranty is void, other manufacturers don't require this for their warranty, Toyota is currently under investigation for lying to customers in Norway.
The Toyota Corolla is the most sold car in the world, and the most reliable car as hybrid and the non hybrid is the 2nd most reliable car… pretty much an achievement even if they are not the most emotional ones
land cruiser. supra. mr2. 2000gt. 4runner. corolla. camry. that's not to mention the great lexus vehicles. really, most of their cars are exemplary for their use case.
Year after year Toyota ranks amongst the most reliable brands, often taking the #1 position with Lexus. They may not always be the most engaging cars to drive but their build quality and technical reliability is undeniably great. The GR Yaris, GR Corolla, and GR Supra are pretty amazing, as well as the Land Cruiser and the iconic LFA with naturally aspirated V10.
I've been to the Toyota dealer for a regular service a month ago. And they have said that this electric model has been stopped from orders. You can not order it anymore, at least in Bulgaria. And that Peugeot style steering/instrument cluster design is just not for me. A steering wheel that low in order for me to see clearly the instruments is like sitting in a child's car toy with pedals.
@@autogefuehl so that means that you've tested the 6.6 as well. I have a BZ4X and I can fully agree with your findings regarding winter range and winter charging speed. I was surprised of the low(er, than expected) range, to be honest. I, too, am very interested in how the car will behave in the warm season. Otherwise, I'm very happy with the car, I really have no complaints regarding ride quality, features, offroad performance etc.
@@autogefuehl maybe some software updates? Ah, I forgot something: the fact that you don't see the battery percentage in the info display. That I hate.
Always nice to see a review by Thomas & co. Your cat looks a lot like my little friend, Spot (yes, that's his name). I agree that a real name for a car is better (easier to remember). Interesting design, but the wheel arches are a bit much. I would prefer a bright Interior, too.
Thanks for the interesting review, its Food to have your opinion on this car. Would have appreciated a more complete comment regarding charging speed in winter conditions. Because this looks like another „coldgate“ (as it was with Hyundai Ioniq 5). So for me this is a bad electric car, which is very unfortunate for e-mobility as a whole. Its completely unnecessary, as there exist proper solutions to this problem: active battery heating. It‘s not about the warranty, its about Toyota saving parts, development and money.
The BZ4X is a poor Toyota attempt at an electric vehicle. Having a heat pump is fine but this vehicle also has a resistive heater element which is why the range drops so much when you activate the cabin heater or the car calls for battery heating. The overall efficiency is very disappointing. It has some nice features but its not my choice for an EV.
1 electric vehicle uses 93 hybrid vehicles worth of battery and 5 plug-in hybrids. So you make one BEV and you lose 93 hybrids. The latter will have a far greater impact on carbon emissions reduction. Hybrid is still a 100% the way to go. $14 for 40 mins of charging cost almost as much as a combustion engine. Not to mention the convenience of gas stations and the ridiculously long range of a Hybrid. I get 550 miles range on my 2022 RAV4 XSE and it's an AWD and I love the way it drives. HEV's make no sense at this point, may be they will in 20 years.
As usual, very Nice review Thomas. Seems like a decent car, but far from class leading, especially in terms of winter range. The exterior is growing on me in terms of the wheel arches,, but I really don't like the steering pod. Maybe better in person? Overall, I'm surprised Toyota doesn't have a big advantage in motor tech. No V2G? Maybe I missed that. Other than the brand name, I see no reason to consider this. Hopefully, there next attempt will be much better. It NEEDS to be efficient, have great range and tech. Seems easy enough..😃😃
Good Video Thomas! Not for me, the car seems to be very loud at higher speeds. The power is also top low for me, its a heavy car so 218 hp is a little low.
Typical of the car industry, giving people what the industry feels like giving rather than what people want. No rear wiper is a safety issue. And cost cutting. A yoke steering wheel is a silly gimmick to copy another company. You can't say it needs a silly computer game steering wheel to see the display. Just position the display where you can see it with a safe steering wheel. This gimmicky approach from the car industry combined with all of them blatantly copying each other is pretty shameful. Driving while using the phone was banned for a reason, but car companies transferred the phone screen to the dashboard. Now it's more dangerous than using a phone. Again, using one screen instead of buttons and dials is cheaper. That's always the drive. Cheaper. Fake vents, fake exhausts, no wipers, no dials, no buttons. I wish some car companies would take leadership and break the trend. I wonder how many lives have been lost because of these silly touchscreens and cost cutting design trends.

That warranty is ridiculously good! We don't get anywhere near that in the States. Just the standard 8yr/100k mi battery warranty.
I think it's only for some markets
I took delivery in May and after the recall got it back in November 2022. Drove it 1000mi through California on thanksgiving weekend and in 50-66F temps I was able to achieve 3.2mi/kwh over the course of 191mi which would have made for a theoretical range of 211mi with the nominal capacity of 66kwh. 70-73mph on HWY 99. It definitely gets better in warm weather. Charging at 60F on the Elk Grove EA peaked at 57kw. Fastest I've seen my CATL battery car charge is 87kw. I like it over all.
Thanks for the feedback!
Funny I used to live in midtown downtown Sac. 😁
Do you also take your car to Maita Toyota for service? They took care of my Scion for 11 years. If I still lived there, I’d have bought this with driving to LT in snow conditions in mind. 🤩🌨️☃️
@@gbohol no I live on the north coast
I've been thinking about buying it, but it's just not as good as the Model Y yet. Charging and range just don't come close. But it drove really nice, acceleration was decent (nothing like the model Y though), and comfort on ride was superior. I actually really like the inside and the exterior, more than the model Y. But now, it's basically the same price and just doesn't measure up. It has better ground clearance that MY, but you can add 2 in spaces for over 8 inches of ground clearance. Just not quite there yet
Thanks a lot for sharing. Nothing beats reality. Do you have a FWD or AWD?

💪
Does your outback have X mode or dual X mode? Since the solterra has the latter I'm presuming that would have made a difference apart from the weight distribution due to the battery
@@z1az285 Makes no difference, the speeds I was travelling at made X-mode redundant.

But there is doubt about the net capacity of the battery as they could only consume and charge back 60 kWh not 74
yes indeed, I re-checked and the usable capacity seems to be 64 kWh. That means the winter range is defo less than 300 km / less than 200 miles

Wonderfully review as always. Just wow!!

We have a 2022 Prius Prime as a company car. This feels nearly identical, just a slightly different body style and EV vs PHEV. Feels a bit phoned in by Toyota, tbh.
Replicating the feel is challenging. But that's exactly what you want when addressing a reluctant audience. Kudos for having achieved that.
I also find the wheel arches a bit too much. Would like to know how full body color looks with 20" wheels.
We own an AWD. My wife and I need a perfect hard working EV and it works GREAT!!!!!
I like that the charging plug is on the driver side.

At least these software features are supposed to come soon via update
Yes Toyota went down the hybrid route and their heart is still there. No belief in EVs
Viel Spaß damit!
Where are you located? I would expect these to be in high demand bc of the Toyota name.
Kudos!!
thanks so much for the support !
Interesting feedback thanks!
The PHEV is the best compromise at the moment
Thanks for the feedback !
Yeah it doesn't like to charge to full on a DCFC. Just charge to 80.
I like the grey colour with the black wheel arch, the white if I had the base model, and its great that the seats are cruelty free, and I am not sure about the yoke S/wheel but what about the steering wheel is that animal free Thomas.
Yes interior is animal free!

The 71,4 kw is brutto, and netto is 64,4 kw , Wien you drive the car until it stop. 0-100 procent is 60 kw.
Toyota does communicate the net capacity with 71 kWh but indeed that cant be really true. It must be lower

Thomas , a question : how do you judge which sound from from the audio system is better or not ?
gut feeling .. what else to do :)
Toyota needs to bring about an update to the range of the vehicle, I hope so
@@alane3985if you were to get any EV at all, why would you not set up a charging station at home?

I used to own a Ford fiesta with quick clear windscreen and I did not notice anything

They solved the wheel problem quickly!? It took them many months! I’m sure it was a top priority and they had their very best interns working on it. But I can’t help but think that if that had happened to the Camry or RAV4 their top engineers would have come up with a solution in 1 month if not 1 week
1 week turnaround from design changes to assembly line changes is very very very tight! Basically no sleep for a week.

They use BYD technology inside .
Where did you test in the snow? I am in Munich and seems little snow in Austria this year without going much further up.

I prefer a rear wiper, maybe its cost saving.
Also bear in mind the battery warranty stipulates in the fine print the car has to be serviced at a Toyota service centre for the entire 10 years or the battery warranty is void, other manufacturers don't require this for their warranty, Toyota is currently under investigation for lying to customers in Norway.
Intirior looks good, except the instrument cluster and I don't like the wheel arches exterior wise.
Thomas, please remind me any example of a great car built by Toyota.
The Toyota Corolla is the most sold car in the world, and the most reliable car as hybrid and the non hybrid is the 2nd most reliable car… pretty much an achievement even if they are not the most emotional ones
Land Cruiser...that's a awesome car
land cruiser. supra. mr2. 2000gt. 4runner. corolla. camry. that's not to mention the great lexus vehicles.
really, most of their cars are exemplary for their use case.
Take a look around your parked car, I am sure you will see a lot of them… 🙂🙂
I think you should do a head to head between this and the Ariya
I've been to the Toyota dealer for a regular service a month ago. And they have said that this electric model has been stopped from orders. You can not order it anymore, at least in Bulgaria. And that Peugeot style steering/instrument cluster design is just not for me. A steering wheel that low in order for me to see clearly the instruments is like sitting in a child's car toy with pedals.
Maybe I’m blind, but I can‘t find how the turning indicator lights look
So, you have tested the newer version, that has the 11kW OBC instead of the 6.6kW OBC that was launched last year? Interesting. Any other changes?
vehicles on location were AC 6,6 but when you order now it is 11 kW
@@autogefuehl so that means that you've tested the 6.6 as well. I have a BZ4X and I can fully agree with your findings regarding winter range and winter charging speed. I was surprised of the low(er, than expected) range, to be honest. I, too, am very interested in how the car will behave in the warm season. Otherwise, I'm very happy with the car, I really have no complaints regarding ride quality, features, offroad performance etc.
totally agree. Great vehicle, but EV specific shortcomings. If that thing would go 100 km further it'd be a no-brainer to buy it

Always nice to see a review by Thomas & co. Your cat looks a lot like my little friend, Spot (yes, that's his name). I agree that a real name for a car is better (easier to remember). Interesting design, but the wheel arches are a bit much. I would prefer a bright Interior, too.

The new Prius but in EV form would be the way to go.
Cheers! Did u check the charging passage?
The BZ4X is a poor Toyota attempt at an electric vehicle. Having a heat pump is fine but this vehicle also has a resistive heater element which is why the range drops so much when you activate the cabin heater or the car calls for battery heating. The overall efficiency is very disappointing. It has some nice features but its not my choice for an EV.
Agree! Other EVs also have resistive heaters although having heat pumps, so why would this one here still drop so significantly?
thank you
1 electric vehicle uses 93 hybrid vehicles worth of battery and 5 plug-in hybrids.

I wonder how many lives have been lost because of these silly touchscreens and cost cutting design trends.
so conclusion is.. 160 miles to 180 miles range in winter. Thanks for video. it is pretty sux..
