I think Americans mindset as a American who drives a small subcompact is that they look kinda dorky. At least the modern small cars. The average person also just doesn't see a small car as a true genuine option when buying a car.
Safety is a concern as well. I think I would die hitting a wall let alone any other car.
Also paying 30 grand for such a small car is a very hard sell. The type of mindset to buy a car like a A class or LBX is just mostly absent in America. 30 grand can be spent elsewhere for a larger car in most Americans heads.

Agreed. I'm tired of models that keep ballooning with every new generation. For example, having recently seen the latest 5 Series in the flesh, it simply looks ridiculously overblown to me.
This 'little' Lexus is simply a much better fit for the roads here in the UK.

I have seen this car in my local dealership during one day Launch Event. It's a funky small car with lot's of customizable options. I like how it looks inside and outside. Things that suprized me most are: narrow central console and suprisingly large trunk for the size of the car. Generally I see this car as a perfect city commuter and I wish to buy it one day.

Thanks for an awesome unbiased review. I am very concerned that BMW & Mercedes are discontinuing their smaller offerings. They will end up chasing and competing in an ever shrinking market segment (mid to large luxury) , while the general trend will be to downsize due to the increased cost of living...... it seems that the board of directors of many German car companies are only chasing short term profit instead of focusing on long term sustainability and maintaining their share of the existing market.

Great review of an interesting car. It's a shame other manufacturers are dropping their small model and it shows up a significant flaw in governments net zero policies. Small cars should be given tax breaks so that remain attractive to build and buy as they have less environmental impact on build and over their lifetime. Lexus is to be congratulated for bringing a new model into this segment and I like it a lot. Nice exterior style and I like the integration of the tech inside. Its conservative for sure but probably way easier to use than a lot of interfaces we are seeing now and it looks a respectable interior for this class and price point. I think this would be an easy car to get along with - good job Lexus !

Great review again. We were looking at it for my wife’s next car to replace her TRoc. Coming from the 2litre DSG the performance drop will be significant, if they had a power increase with a rear motor in the 4wd that would suit the car better. Build quality ok not great, that’s very helpful what you showed under seat and glove box as you would not notice that in a test drive. We will still test drive but I was expecting more from a Lexus.

I feel like Lexus did an exceptional job creating a much more premium product from their Toyota Yaris Cross. I definitely dislike those electric door-opening buttons. That's totally unnecessary, and when they do fail, you won't have the reflex of understanding the manual release (I think).
But I do find it fantastic that Toyota still builds small cars (elsewhere at least). In North America, we've lost pretty much anything south of a compact (and we use the term compact very loosely as the Civic is larger than its older Accord midsize sibling).
I doubt we'll be getting this in Canada, sadly. We need small cheap cars...desperately.

An interesting review which shows one answer to how a premium brand tries to produce an affordable car which is still premium. To my mind BMW have already cracked this with their Mini Electric, if you do not go over the top with the options. The most interesting feature of this review is how Lexus have used tweaks to traditional suspension and braking to achieve some of the effects which other brands achieve with some form of air suspension. To my mind one or other version of the Mazda MX30 makes a similar trade off of premium quality and affordability.

I did get a sneak preview and did sit inside in the LBX in my local showroom. As awesome and flashy and kit out it is, it'll be abit tight for someone like me at the back that's about 1.76m tall.

As an old school Lexus owner in OZ we now have both a 2020 Lexus UX and Corolla in the garage. The 2 cars are exceptionally close and it would be impossible to justify the cost difference to buy the UX. Having said that; no one willing chooses to drive the Corolla over the UX. "Sliding" into the drivers lounge of UX feels like piloting a LC with the comfort of a LS. Jumping into the Corolla is like, well, jumping into a Corolla.....
Having said that; the UX rear passenger and luggage space is abysmal, we don't even bother having the rear seats up.
So from our perspective Lexus has us beat; the Corolla is a fantastic car but if you want the polish quit complaining and get a Lexus. If the small Lexus is too small; then buy a bigger Lexus. If you can't afford a bigger Lexus then get a Toyota, afterall they are nearly as good. You would be crazy to risk your money on some Euro-trash when your friends at Toyota/Lexus have an answer for everything!
The only exception to their cunning marketing is the F Sport nonsense; Lexus is luxury, DUH. If you want an underpowered, hard riding, average handling, sportish car yeah buy one but really any Euro Sports is better. Sure the F Sport will be 1 million percent reliable but that is not the purpose of a "real" sports car.

Why do you compare this car with a C segment A class?????
I rather think the German b and C segment rivals from Vw, Audi, Bmw, Mercedes have less materials in the interiors.....to save money.

I had lunch with a friend yesterday. A buddy of his drives a Lexus plug-in hybrid that needs a new HV battery. Unfortunately he’s just passed his battery warranty period and he’s being quoted ~$CAD30K to replace the battery pack. Quite shocking to hear such a high price for a non BEV. Ever hear of such costs on a plug-in hybrid??

Plugin batteries are tiny and cost rather few K $, Euros, Pounds. Around 5K. 30K sounds a lot. You also have 10 years warranty in Europe if you service car at the dealer.

Thomas could you go into the durability of these new cars a bit more? One factor of eco friendliness ought to be how long the vehicle will be used for. Do we have to change our cars every three years? Also could you take the cars over a variety of roads. City roads are easy peasy. How strong is the suspension in this little Lexus? I think I would like a cross country version, if they will make one.

This is a great review, this reminds me of my current car the Vauxhall Mokka, I dont consider it a particularly small car, the LBX is actually bigger and looks more premium. I want an automatic for my next car to take full advantage of Adaptive cruise control plus I am getting lazy now 🙂 I was looking at the Volvo XC40 but is a little bigger than I need as I have limited garage space, this ticks every box at the moment.

Surprised you found the seating position similar to a normal hatchback as the LBX height 1560mm is the same as for Yaris Cross. You must have extremely extremely long legs as I'm 6ft 1inch and can easily sit behind myself in a Yaris Cross. The wheelbase of LBX is 10mm longer than Yaris Cross. Anyway whatever, thanks for the review.

I don't mind the power in a small car, my gf had an x1 with the 1.5/136hp and was similar in acceleration. The thing that I mind in a so called luxury vehicle is the sound insulation at motorway speed - for instance the A klasse (second gen) was terrible for me at 140kmh.

Yes, the much cheaper 2024 Yaris Cross "Hybrid 130" (also 2024 Yaris hatchback hybrid too) has almost the same engine power and torque as this Lexus LBX. Yaris Cross can be bought as FWD and AWD. I do prefer the exterior and interior of the Lexus LBX but the price difference to Yaris Cross "Hybrid 130" is significant. I do agree with Thomas that for Lexus LBX price I expect more power/torque even if the fuel economy is a ~10% worse than Toyota Yaris Cross. Very nice video from Thomas.

    • @yuribudilov5638
      @yuribudilov5638 5 месяцев назад

@@jdmguy44 the Lexus LBX high-price (so far?) seems to be too close to (next size up) Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid AWD/FWD which has a much better drive-train (35% more power and torque and full 1 second faster to 100kmh) and also +30cm longer with much more room for rear passengers and more luggage space too. Lexus LBX has tried to polish things up, agreed, but so far I can only see this polish appealing to people who just want to buy a Lexus. Anyone comparing apples to apples can either save a lot of money by bying a 2024 Yaris Cross Hybrid-130 FWD/AWD or spend the same money as Lexus LBX and buy a much better car - a Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid FWD/AWD. I would consider Lexus LBX if it was significantly cheaper than Corolla Cross Hybrid.
