To be honest, the lyrics do veer off into pure incoherence about half-way through. They're excelent all the way up to "wage the war on organized crime". From there on out, Mustaine has clearly lost the plot completely. Individually great lines for the most part, but without any real connection to eachother.

@@astro2691 It did after I did some more digging and realized it's two separate songs bridged together. Then it suddenly didn't seem so disjointed anymore.
Whys the intro so long? Because it's a piece of music, it doesn't necessarily need to be covered in lyrics. And this particular intro is full of great riffs that deserve their space. Sometimes it's good to get a feel for the rythym before the singing starts.

You can start them out with 190 proof Everclear or start them some 80 proof Barcardi and then hit them with the real stuff. Most people can't handle the truth and Metal is as true as it gets.
Hi Pamela. Just a tip: Don't listen to metal like you listen to pop. What I mean is that with pop, the objective is to focus on the lyrics with the bass and beat as a the backdrop for a quick moment. With metal, the objective is more to focus on and develop an appreciation for the instrumental skill and talent (the amazing complexity of melodies and rhythms throughout the song) and experience it like a musical story being told or journey taken. Afterward, analyze the vocals, and learn that the styles metal vocals used take very intricate and passionate skill pulll off (like a very dramatic actor on stage), and through that realization, analyze the lyrics based on things like the time era it was released and any double meanings that could take place in any clever wording being used.
I would even more suggest doing some basic research into how classical music is composed and why it is composed the way it is - a lot of metal takes its structures from that for similar reasons, such as to musically tell a story.
I would like to suggest the band Ghost, and the song From the Pinnacle to the Pit. (Also learn some of the background of the band and their gimmick).

Unleash The Archers - Awakening (full studio playthrough). Power metal, female singer, no screaming but extremely powerful voice and the musical demonstration you see from the members will blow your mind and show you just what there is to admire.

This song was written about the conflict in Ireland. Dave wrote it, after he had to be escorted out of a concert. It's about the IRA, and the war between Protestants and Catholics. It's actually pretty damn deep, if you know the motivation behind it. He wrote it in one day, after that experience.
Not it’s not. Dave was absolutely inspired to write the song after he his experience in Northern Ireland, but it’s about all religious conflicts, including the what was going on in Ireland and the UK.

Jesus, even Loco (A Korean rapper) admits in his lyrics is that "the only thing that's changed these days is I don't wince at the price tags".

Pamela, one of the things you need to understand about Metal, the music is as, if not more important than the lyrics. It's about composition, and showing the talent of the musicians.
If you want to get into lyrics that will engage your mind (and at times require some study on your part) dive into TOOL.
Some suggestions: Schism, Lateralus, Forty Six and 2, Vicarious.
Some tips:
#1: stop ripping on the types of music she likes. that's only going to set her on the defense and look for reasons to be dismissive of the music you like. respect what she likes, even if you're not a fan of it.
#2: start with stuff that's not quite so frenetic. Stuff that has more of a build and a groove. This is why I suggested things like Orion or One.
#3: You can also try something like 'Hallowed Be Thy Name' by Iron Maiden ... with lyrics: the lyrics will be powerful.
Not the best starter song.. would recommend LOG - 512 or Pantera- Cemetery gates..or Metallica - One , unforgiven 2 , turn the page or master of puppets...and also try SOAD- Chop suey or toxicity... Waiting for another episode..

PS :Megadeth - Peace Sells ( the title track ), would have been a much better starting point than Holy Wars..The punishment due, which has a lot of fast ( something newbies don't grasp, much less like ) & complex arrangements with some of the best thrash metal solos packaged in a tight two-piece song. You need to graduate past the high school of metal ( Metallica / Iron Maiden / Black Sabbath ) to dig the good Megadeth stuff.
Best Megadeth starter song is "Killing is My Business" still easy listening, but with Megadeth's trademark heaviness

You should have her check out some Iron Maiden, since Bruce Dickinson is a great vocalist, and they're always teaching some kind of lesson with their lyrics. Maybe start with Alexander the Great.

The song is about the IRA, and the lyrics are very true to what people then, and now feel. I understand that people that don't get metal don't get the speed, but this is the ultimate as far as metal musicianship is concerned.

I left Black Sabbath's Paranoid in the car CD player a few years back in our new car and my wife couldn't work out how to shut it off on a long drive. She gets metal now.
Yeah, it's a little confusing because it's Holy Wars/ The Punishment Due. Two song melded into one. As mentioned the second part is about The Punisher comic book. So the lyrics describe the writer's confusion over the senselessness of the Persian Gulf War and then we see the effect it had on one man, Frank Castle. It turned him into a killing machine. It's actually pretty clever writing IMO.

Basically the song is split into two parts. The first part is about wars waged because of religion. The second part is paying homage to the Punisher basically.
Megadeth in particular are a band you can't really fully engage opening up for just entertainment. The people who love this music are people who feel the message in the lyrics, people who relate to the outrage of the views and injustices in his words.
Megadeth have long been comprised by musical virtuosos, so changed in dynamic and tempo are very common.
This song in particular is meant to have two separate motions. "Holy Wars": Derived from Dave's experience as an international musician and a very specific incident involving "The Cause" during a show in Antrim a few years before... And ”...The Punishment Due", with lyrics inspired heavily by Dave's affinity for the comic book antihero The Punisher.
To be fair, Canadians are mostly frozen. It's going to take a while for her eardrums to thaw enough to appreciate good music. I mean, come one, who really "likes" Drake and Top 40? That's like asking someone what their favorite food is and they answer, "Lettuce". Cheers, guys.

The Holy Wars part I'm sure is about when he was in Belfast and shouted 'For the cause' and started a riot. This was during the troubles when British soldiers were making life hell for the nationalists in NI. Dave Mustaine didn't understand the fuss and that's where this song came from. Funny because the troubles in NI stemmed from political reasons more than religious, although the loyalist side have an irrational hatred of catholics.
Anyway, it's a really weird way to listen to music having the lyrics appear on screen as you listen. Just hear the song.

And yes, the lyrics are absolutely cheesy if you look at them superficially, but knowing the background behind it and the intention, plust taking in consideration the era in which it was made, it makes sense.

Just came from your Nightwish - "Ghost Love Score" reaction, and enjoyed your conversation about it, so I'm catching up. I'll reiterate my comment there about moving chronologically - I just think that may be more productive.
That said, a couple points. First, pertaining to the intro being long - it's important to note that while there ARE some very deep lyrics in metal music (again, "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath should really be your next stop), unlike with the singer/songwriters that Pamela (did I catch that right?) may have grown up with, metal focuses MUCH more on the music than on the vocals, and in fact a lot of the harsh vocals you hear in later, more extreme metal, are used as an instrument rather than as a delivery mechanism for lyrics. Thus, you're going to find a LOT of long solos, intros, and instrumental breaks throughout the genre, because the music is really the star. You mentioned listening to the symphony - in a lot of ways, you have to listen to metal in the same way you listen to an orchestra - a different kind of orchestra, sure, but the point stands.
Second, about this song in particular - this is really two songs mashed together. The full title is "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due". There are two distinct elements there. The first half, Holy Wars, is more lyrically focused, about killing for religion. The second have, The Punishment Due, really has nothing to do with the first half, and is actually just based on The Punisher comics from Marvel (you may have seen or at least heard about the show on Netflix - it's really good, check it out). I'm not sure why Dave Mustaine mashed them together - I'd guess he just had some song halves and didn't really know how to finish them - much like Billy Joel's "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" (though I confess Billy Joel did a better job of marrying them, using one as a bridging device for the other).
Last point, and I'm sorry for writing so much, but you brought up the question of "what mood do you have to be in to listen to this?" Well, honestly, I can be in any mood to listen to metal. But, the best times, are either working out in the gym, where heavy, fast, driving music really motivates me (there is simply no better workout music than Iron Maiden), or alternately you've had a long, frustrating day, maybe your boss or a client at work was an asshole, or you just couldn't get anything done no matter how much you tried, and you want to work off your frustrations in a non-harmful way. Some people might put on something calm and relaxing, that's fine. Personally, I put on something harsh and heavy and aggressive, and a bang my head and let it get my blood pumping and 2 songs later I'm feeling great, because it allows me to embrace the anger/frustration/, work through it, and let it go.
