    Help me convert my girlfriend to a metal head! Suggest what songs and bands I should use to get her to appreciate metal, but don't throw her to the wolves. We need to break her in gradually. :)
    In this video Pamela and Jordan check out Iron Maiden's music video of 2 Minutes To Midnight. We react to it and hopefully Pamela (my girlfriend) likes it! I think we will get her to turn into a metal head eventually. Iron Maiden vs Girlfriend Round 1 LETS GO!

    Just FYI - Iron Maiden was a leader of a wave of heavy metal called "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" (usually abbreviated NWOBHM), which was an early movement in metal, and predated both Thrash and Glam (hair metal). That said, Maiden was a huge influence on both of those sub-genres, as well as others such as speed metal and progressive metal. Other NWOBHM bands included Motorhead, Saxon, and Venom. Iron Maiden don't still wear skintight spandex, thankfully, but they do tour and are actually touring North America this summer. You should check 'em out! And there recent albums from the past decade are really good.
    Hair/Glam metal certainly took some cues from them musically, and, yes, from KISS as well with regard to the makeup and theatrics (though frankly more from David Bowie), but the real pioneer of that style was Motley Crue, who formed a bit later (early 80's), and who influenced countless bands that wore makeup and dressed in a more androgynous style.
    And as a huge metalhead who LOVES Iron Maiden and thinks of them as my favorite band of all time, I have no issue with you giving 2 Minutes to Midnight an 8. It's a good song, but not my favorite of theirs. You should maybe try "Wasted Years" - it's a great song with some awesome guitar parts, but also very catchy. "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" is a fantastic song, but I wouldn't actually recommend it to someone who doesn't generally like metal and is unfamiliar with its conventions. Maybe something like "The Trooper" or "Run to the Hills" would be good.

    I wouldn't say Iron Maiden was thrash metal exactly. They are usually included as one of the biggest bands, if not the biggest, in the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" (NOWBHM), which immediately preceded the rise of thrash metal. I think Iron Maiden's music is more melodic and even operatic than most thrash bands like Megadeth and Anthrax. So it's more like they helped pave the way for the creation of thrash metal.
    Really enjoying this series!

    To clarify, Motley Crue, Ratt, Poison and Warrant were examples of what became known, after the fact, as hair metal. Back in the day we called it glam metal. Iron Maiden, though not thrash metal themselves, certainly had an influence on the thrash metal scene, as did Judas Priest.
    Going further, Queen did not invent thrash metal. Their song Stone Cold Crazy, however is part of the DNA of thrash, as is Budgie's song Bread Fan.

    • @metalconvert2324
      @metalconvert2324  5 лет назад

      I'm seeing that Stone Cold Crazy was the first thrash metal song, but Iron Maiden paved the way for it. I remember seeing they had one of the first songs that was viewed as thrash.

    • @strogaa
      @strogaa 5 лет назад

      @@metalconvert2324 Hair Metal/Glam Metal was mainly influenced by bands like Sweet, T-Rex, Slade (known as Glam Rock in the 70s). Bands like Metallica, Slayer or Anthrax had clear affinity to the "hard corner" of NWOBHM (Motörhead, Diamond Head, Tank, Venom and of course Iron Maiden and Judas Priest). But also bands like Def Leppard, Praying Mantis, Saxon or Demon were a part of the NWOBHM scene. They can easily be named as influence from NWOBHM to later Hair Metal.
      It's always difficult to find out the ways of influence. It gets even more difficult, cause the media often uses terms for a band or a song just due to the fact, it came out during a certain period of time or out of a certain geographical area.
      Every band in the late 70s/early 80s, who came from England and used to make hard music, that couldn't be described as punk, was automatically part of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. So you can say Def Leppard and Venom make the same kind of music.
      And in the early days Iron Maiden were used to be described as punkrock.
      No one with musical knowledge in Heavy Metal would compare a band like Manowar with Poison for example. But you can find "documentaries" they are both named as members of the genre "Hair Metal".

  • @raistlinrodriguez5696
    @raistlinrodriguez5696 5 лет назад +16

    They started in 1975, they were a part of The New Wave of English Metal, never played any thrash. They are NO WHERE NEAR Hair Metal. Poison, Motley Crue, Dokken these are Hair Metal. Just FYI. Check out Newer stuff like Blood Brothers or The Clansman live. Anything from Rock n Rio live is awesome and more recent performance. Bruce Dickinson has been back with the band since 1999. The bands music is far better than Nightwish IMO and the guitar work is amazing. They mastered the guitar double harmony which inspired bands like Metallica and Megadeth and so many others. Their live shows blow away all other bands.

I say this as a massive Maiden fan who's seen pretty much every live video there is to see of them. Don't listen to the people requesting the Rock in Rio version, that's the one everyone knows about so that's the one that gets requested a ton. The Flight 666 DVD has better video and audio quality, the performance is better, and the crowd is mic'd better so you can hear them better. Glam metal (also known pejoratively as hair metal and often used synonymously with pop metal) is a subgenre of heavy metal, which features pop-influenced hooks and guitar riffs, and borrows from the fashion of 1970s glam rock.
    Glam metal is performed by music acts like Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick, Kiss, the New York Dolls, and Van Halen. It arose in the late 1970s and early 1980s in the United States, particularly on the Los Angeles Sunset Strip music scene, pioneered by bands such as Mötley Crüe, Ratt, Quiet Riot, Stryper, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, and Dokken. It is popularity has risen since the early 2010s with bands like Steel Panther and was also popular throughout the mid-late 1980s , early 1990s bringing to prominence bands including Poison, Skid Row, Cinderella, and Warrant . Glam metal is associated with flashy clothing, makeup and notable for an overall androgynous aesthetic. Poison, for example, have long shaggy or backcombed hair, accessories, metal studs, leather, and make-up during their live performances.

    Iron Maiden was formed in the 70`s but they didn't release their first album until 1980. And they had a completely different singer. Bruce Dickinson first came in 1981 when he left the band Samson (which he was their second singer too) Bruce became the voice of the band as he was the singer fir a very long time still is, though he did leave briefly to create a solo group. Blaze Bagley than took over for a short time after leaving Wolfsbane and when Dickinson returned he created his own solo career.
    Maiden definitely paved the way for Thrash but Hair Metal is NOT Kiss, don't know where you got that from. They influenced that genre, but they are not glam rock (the technical term)
    Twisted Sister, Dec Leppard, etc are that genre.
    I looked back and saw that you were just thrown in the deep end with Megadeth. You have to be eased into the heavier stuff.
    King Diamond is a band to check out too but they are a tad heavier. Check out Ronnie James Doo, he's more rock and hard rock, but it's another way to transition

    Jordan, I'm also more instrumental. There are many songs that I was listening for years but I didn't know more than couple lines of lyrics and did not even try to find out because instrumental part is so great. The riff is great.
    For example, I belive that 90% of people who like "Smoke on the water" do not know what is song about, do not know all the lyrics. But 101% of people know the riff. :)
    That gives oppotunity to listen songs in any language because if you like instrumental you do not care about lyrics, don't care what they are singing about.

    You guys are accomplishing what I may never be able to. I have tried to get my gf to at least listen to metal and give it a chance. She couldnt get past 30 seconds of Megadeth-Holy Wars. ( I actually used your reaction video to show her the song... I thought maybe she could maybe identify with Pamela....but nope lol) I made the mistake of taking her to a Rage concert last year ( with really shitty sound at a shitty venue) and since then she hates the sound of metal music.I managed to agree to go see Frog Leap with me as well as Nightwish. Maybe having the live experience with good sound and show will make the difference. BTW....if you are not familiar with Frog Leap, it might help your cause :) I wont tell you what its all about....You can see for yourself ;)

    First off, Iron Maiden started in 1975 and released their 1st studio album in 1980. They are considered a heavy metal band, but have some other stuff too. Queen's "Stone Cold Crazy", recorded and released in 1974 (So before IM was even formed), was probably the first thrash metal song, although the term "thrash metal" wasn't even used back then.
    Second, metal music originates from the United Kingdom, where in 1968 three of the genre's most famous pioneers Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple were founded.
    Once you have walked through the memory lane with IM, I suggest that you check out some contemporary stuff with clean female vocals, two amazing guitarists (one of which is only 19yrs old, left-handed & a woman) with really fast paced power metal form Italy. They are called "Frozen Crown" and this is their latest music video from their second album "Crowned In Frost" to be released on March 22nd - FROZEN CROWN - Neverending (Official Video) ruclips.net/video/9o0imRANjm0/видео.html So why not watch/listen to something new to you both as everyone already having reacted to them have really liked their "easy to listen to" music.
    P.S. I'm pretty sure that she will not like Jinjer or other bands with harsh/growling vocals, with the possible exception of IGNEA. Also totally agree with her comment about Nightwish & Floor Jansen (Nightwish's lead vocalist) who is presently considered among the best female metal vocalists, if not even the best.
    P.S.S. I hope that you are not trying to make her also like the kind of metal/bands that you yourself like from the past, because I think it's the wrong approach - you should find something new you both like.

      Where was the almighty Google when you made that error?
      You may wanna proof your videos before posting. ;-)
      As for 1975 vs 1976, I was close. Call me a liar by one lousy year (I am probably thinking of one of their demo tapes circulating in 1976). Since they hadn't actually been signed to any labels or released anything yet, it's a much more acceptable error to err on the year they formed. It's still closer than 1981, which is a year later than their debut album, when the sophomore effort (Killers) came out.
      I did not dispute anything to do with the Powerslave album. I know very well it came out in 1984. Best year ever, punctuated by one of the best albums ever from one of the best bands ever. :-)
