@@CuratedEras Why were so nasty towards this song and the vocals? There's a difference between not liking a song and being a drunk jerk, which seems to be the case in this video. Like I said, by all means are you allowed to not like this song, you're even allowed to hate the song. I may be a metalhead but at least if someone shows me song from a genre I don't typically listen to or like I give it a fair chance. You probably think that I'm some close-minded and elitist metalhead which you are allowed to have that opinion but I can listen to anything from Autopsy to Slowdive to Lana Del Rey to Cypress Hill. Think about the lyrics in the beginning, basically depicting life waking up. When you first wake up, you might be groggy and half asleep. So the droning style of lyrics are meant to support that depiction. Analogize it to a movie that takes a little bit of time to set up the characters and the world before the plot kicks in. See? So try not to listen with your own pre-conditioned intention of expectation (it's not pop!). Allow it to tell its story the way its meant to be told and learn to recognize the merit in its own creative technique in doing so. :)

Actually the whole song is a metaphor. Joe (the singer) wrote the song for his daughter. It's about growing up strong in a world where people are cold and only care about themselves, thus 'born in winter'. Joe told a friend of mine years ago. The ''we're all born from the burst of a star'' is the typical ''gay/straight/white/black we're all the same''.

I believe Joe wrote this song before his daughter was born, hence Born in Winter. The lyrics are him trying to explain to her everything she is going to go through from the moment she is born until she is older and letting her know that she is a blessing from the heavens. The 1st verse is him talking to her in the womb, comforting her so that she gets used to his voice.

There are so many bands you need to explore to really convert. A proper metal tour, if you will.
The new Alterbeast album is crazy, the title track Feast is a real face melter.
Born of Osiris has a bunch of stuff with a really good beat, seems like she likes the stuff you can bob your head to, Divergency would be a great place to start.
The Black Dahlia Murder is super talented, they have a video for Necropolis that ya'll should definitely check out.
Fallujah is an amazing metal band, I'm a huge fan of their first full length (The Harvest Wombs), but everything they've done is great.
You NEED to show her The Fine Constant, they're a instrumetal band fronted by Sarah Longfield, who's one of the best female guitarists I've ever seen, they have a video for the song Inevitable Disconnect, good place to start.
Also, Wretched's last release, Cannibal, was a wonderful piece of musical genius.
Just a few suggestions to get you started!
Metal has some of the most talented musicians, and I wish you the best of luck in your quest for conversion!

hmm idk man, i think is a little bit forced and unfair for her starting with something so heavy, put yourself in her shoes and think "how can i introduce her this music?" if you want to convert her i suggest to start with something light and heavy at the same time, try with some bands to create the conection between what she like it and what you like it, i suggest start with Nightwish, Epica or After forever, a beautiful voice with a heavy metal music, after that you can scaling the level, i think start with Megadeth and then Gojira... hmmmm was wrong. i suggest this songs to start.
    1. Epica - Cry for the moon
    2. Nightwish - ghost love score (live) - with Floor Jansen with her "Floorgasm" lol
    3. Nightwish - The phantom of the opera (live) -with Tarja Turunen (maybe you can provoke her the "Tarja effect" and she start to cry)
My personal history in music started listening rap and hip-hop band for their political lyrics then for this political lyrics i meet old school punk rock like Sex Pistols, Misfit, The Clash, then i meet Metallica, Megadeth, Sepultura, Pantera, and today im a guitar player who loves Dream theater, Symphony-X, Avenged Sevenfold, Steve Vai, Jason Becker, Yngwie Malmsteen, and listening a lot of metal styles, im telling you man, create the conection.

Feels pretty bad to hear someone bash my favorite song from Gojira. Those "droning" vocals are so deliciously majestic and foreboding, very much in line with the subject matter, which is the life cycle of an organism born in a harsh environment. They're telling the story of the universe and the big bang. How we are all just particles, joined together and given life. This is probably the only song off of their 6 albums where Joe sang in such a low register, and it was a fucking treat!
Anyway, good that you're trying to get into metal. Most won't ever try.

Well on the strength of the first 10 minutes, she likes groove. Something to move to. Old Sepultura. Pantera. Lateralus album tool. Korn even. Clutch. More gojira. With a decent dancing tempo. There's your key. That'll be how you open her mind to it all. Save the balls out cerazy shit for when she's acclimatised.
Or just go all out meshuggah and cryptopsy. Never know, might work. Emperor might be the key. Or infant annihalator. She might be secretly a twisted acid grindcore fiend who only breathes pcp at 400bpm: agoraphobic nosebleed style.
    Unlikely though.
Also, don't try sunnO))) if she doesn't like the drone. Or earth.
Just in terms of your interplay between the two of you, no need to argue. You're trying to get her hooked into it, when she's about to talk just ask her what she thinks. No need to correct her, it's music, not a math equation. Literally impossible to be wrong about music. Pop music bores me, but pink and bjork are OK. Bloodbath are OK at the same time. Neither of those statements is right or wrong, but there's nothing more off-putting than being told how you should think/feel over a piece of music. And by the looks of she's strong willed enough to not take it. Don't fuck up the video by going metal elitist. That path only leads to boring everyone with an explanation as to why mgła aren't really trve kvlt black metal, because windir... No one likes elitism, it makes a journey aggravating.
When she's explained how she feels over the song you can explain the journey it's taken you on. Discussion of a journey, rather than confrontation over who had the better thoughts about the journey.
Also, she looks at you a lot, so you're doing something right. Treat her well bud.

@@CuratedEras and yes, stoned is an easy way to put yourself into the calm, comfortable state to just listen to music, but it's not necessary. Just close your eyes and go there. That said, I hated with a burning passion dance music, until I took ecstasy the first time, that was the key that unlocked an appreciation of that type of music for me, and it's an appreciation that's lingered well into sobriety... If it works, why not?
Vocals in metal, for the most part, are neither the main feature, nor disposable. Think of the voice as an extra instrument, at their best they sit as an extra tone in the musical layers. Isis were great for 'getting' the growl. Wintersun's 'sons of winter and stars' (live at sonicpump studios) is great for accepting cheesy. Nothing wrong with good cheese. Who doesn't love French camembert? Canadian band called unleash the archers 'awaken' also great purveyors of cheese.
As for long songs, you need some reorientation. 8 minutes is fine for song length. So here's a prescription from Dr. Matthew: drink some of that tea you mentioned, and listen to marrow by yob. It's quite short at just under 20 minutes. Listen to the whole album it's on in fact, it'll be nice whilst stoned. 4 songs in 60ish minutes. Then, to wake up, listen to long song- green carnation's 'light of day, day of darkness' it's about 62 minutes from start to finish. And it's fast. After those, 8 minutes should seem fine. If not, bell witch released an album last year called mirror reaper. It is again, 1 song and it clocks in at 83 minutes. Of sadness and gloom.
Don't let your boyfriend just throw these vids out unprepared either, preparation can be fun. Don't know the song or the band? Wikipedia. This album gains a different flavour once you know it's a tribute to the drummer and singer's mum dying. Or even historical context: megadeth helped create all this blessed noise? Well of course it's gonna be 'stayin alive' levels of cheesy. Or even just band members: just 3 people can make this much noise? That's impressive...
Welp, have a good day my dear.

Listen to The Melvins - Revolve. They wrote the song lyrics on the premise that the lyrics dont matter if the music is good. You can literally sing any words as long as the pitch of the word fits.

Wanna blast her with: Full complexity and blastbeats - Wintersun, sons of winter and stars. Blunt Force - Pantera, Walk. Technical mastery, shock and girl power - Jinjer, Pisces. Or maybe soften her to growls with perfect clean vocals and short song - Amorphis, The Bee

I'm subscribing to you guys because this is interesting. The best Gojira album is "Magma" while they were making the album the mother of the singer and drummer passed away. Leading to the most emotional album they have ever created in my opinion.

This song is the one that got me into gojira, no THC involved. There is a build lol, he was right when you guys paused it. Most metal requires some patience. And lol she said she would listen to fall asleep before the drop, and also this is probably one of only about 4 songs of theirs you could possibly say that about. 😆😆😆

This is prog metal. Flying whales might have been a better choice of songs for her imo. Metal has a whole lot of sub genres doubt she's going to dig all of it.

So I heard you don't like slow buildups and you like double bass? I recommend Backbone by Gojira.
PS: Born In Winter (i love this song) is probably closest to a ballad by Gojira, so it is not really representative of their range.

Okay im watching this 3 years later. I watched 6 minutes for now. What I see: A dude, he obviously likes the song. She looks bored, she stops paying attention (thats a nono for a music reaction, if you dont care, dont watch it, dont upload it). She gives him eyes like "Why do we have to do this?". Arguement and passive aggressivenesess intensifies. She thinks its repetetive, while probably listening to pop music, having 0 understanding of music and just likes to mock this song. I dont where you are at now, but its better to divorce XD I think you 2 life in different realities :D

Girlfriend - Interesting channeling of Slash. Seeing him tomorrow so will try to compare.
Boyfriend - you seriously have gone with the deep end strategy... fair play but if you are going to do it then choose something like Heaviest Matter of the Universe and hit girlfriend in the face (figuratively) with it .
Girlfriend - the music doesn't take priority over the vocals... it should be an entire product.
