Hat pins during the early 1900s grew to 14 plus inches. During the suffrage movement, police were afraid to break up picketing women for fear of being stabbed. Laws were introduced requiring hat pins to be limited to no more than 8 inches. This also played to the new bob hair style and much smaller hats.

I kinda wish we still had hatpins. When they were in vogue women also used it as self defence against harassers, especially when travelling alone. I often think of the painting The Irritating Gentleman by Berthold Woltze, and how with art imaging techniques they showed that the girl in the painting was holding a hat pin. There’s something poetic about this hidden hat pin. Like there’s a secret strength to the young girl. Tldr; I really like hat pins

For those of us with much shorter hair - you can loosely hand sew a bit of elastic thread through the front 1/2 or 2/3 of the inner hat band, then tie the ends together. then, when you put the hat on, stretch that bit of elastic around the back of your head. Holds on great even on windy days, and basically invisible especially if you sorta match the thread to your hair.

If you had a thick braid in your bun, you don't need a very long hat pin.
Modern women of today have shorter hair. Princess Diana had short hair. She had little combs sewn into her hats. You can do this with your hats, whatever types and size, and the hat will be secure.

My apologies if I'm wrong. Do you have armpit hair? If I'm correct, I admire you. I've always wanted to stop shaving my armpits, but my brothers and friends would tease me. I thought I wouldn't seem "lady like" if I stopped like I wanted to. Seeing you, a lady, doing this is truly inspiring to me.

Haha, I never thought I’d be talking about my armpit hair on the internet! Yeah I shave sometimes and sometimes I don’t bother ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it’s nice to feel like it doesn’t really matter either way. I do get misogynistic comments about it occasionally but I think that means you’re doing something right.

I wonder if this is why, according to the old rules of etiquette, women are allowed to wear hats in situations where men may not?

You probably would want one in the front then, too?

So... what kind of updos would you recommend? Im a big fan of a bun (ballet bun) but dont know how that would work.

I would end up putting the little cap back on the end of the pen. That way in case you fail or fell onto somebody you wouldn't impale them with end that's got the point to it.

Going to a car show and it was like extreme record wins and I had to use to have pins and I’m so glad I had both of them with me. Didn’t think I needed them but by the end of the night I kept my hair up that it started raining and I am really glad I had my hat pins
