I really appreciate this video! It inspired me to clean a couple of hats that were pretty stained with sweat salt. I decided to combine vinegar with warm water and a bit of dish soap and let that soak in the sink for an hour or so. After that, I gave them a good scrub in the problem areas with a soft brush, then rinsed, and dried as directed. The inverted bowl trick is genius! I’m happy to report both hats look great now!

Years ago a friend introduced me to those plastic hat wash racks. They do a pretty good job of helping to keep the hat's shape while being swished around inside a washing machine. After they're cleaned, I keep them in the racks to air dry, so no need to use towels to absorb the moisture. 😁

    • @panachevitz
      @panachevitz 21 день назад +4

As a counterpoint: Many years ago I used those to clean my hats and the brims ended up getting torn up from the friction of rubbing against the plastic and clothes. To be fair, I did also toss that in with a regular load of laundry so that may have been where I went wrong. Now I just hand wash my hats.

As a kid my mom would wash my hats like that. Even had a plastic hat cage that I think she only used for the dryer. Brims were always messed up, hats were only a little bit cleaner. Gonna try this method on my Orioles hat. It's a bit faded, but who knows, I might even try to dye it, we'll see. Could be tricky though and colors will probably bleed into wrong sections, and possibly onto my head lol

I use alcohol markers to color in the bleached spots, or the whole hat
The only thing is the dye is often not actually broken down or washed out, it just wasn't permanent so it migrates when it gets wet. Certain areas on the brim will collect more dye and be darker versus the original colored areas

For shaping, I use the bladder from an old soccer ball (one with real stitching for the cover). Carefully remove the cover. Leave the cover piece that holds the valve. You only need to remove enough pieces around the valve to allow the bladder to be pulled out. In use, the bladder won't be fully inflated - just enough so that when the hat is placed over the bladder the light pressure is firm enough to conform to the shape of the hat.

Then I put them in a bucket with washing machine soap and water, and soak for a few hours. After a thorough rinse, I dab them with a towel, and set them on a mini floor fan, which drys them, and fills with air to keep their shape. They’re clean, and smell good.

Back in the day there were some "hat forms" available at some sports supply stores. There were two pars to the forms, one for the inside and one for the outside. They were designed for wading your hat in a dishwasher. Dishwasher soaps are way too harsh for hats but if one uses Dawn dish soap in a dishwasher you will wind up with too many soap bubbles in the washer and it will not drain out properly. One needs to find a low sudsing soap, set the time to the shortest and coolest setting on the dishwasher and wash away. One might try using the internet and see if anyone offers these "forms" and use them only for drying the hat after hand washing.
Now for those few who want to clean and block their cover there are some military supply shops on the internet that carry the proper forms for that purpose.

The hats look great for sure. I would do this if I had a hat that was a memory of an event, like a Super Bowl or The Masters etc, but otherwise, It's just easier to buy a new hat. Great hats on Temu for $3-$5 each. I've bought several and the quality has been quite good. I'll throw them in the dishwasher when they get dirty. If they don't last, I'll just get a couple more for that price.

I used this to clean my sneakers that got road salt on them from winter. I couldn't understand why it came back after it dried or worse it would come back after walking in the dew from the lawn after it dried again, thanks.

I love my hats. I keep and wear them for as long as I can.

I soak mine overnight in water with oxyclean added. Rinse the next day and let air dry. No scrubbing at all. Hats look new.

I’ve found that, in warm weather, the best way to preserve the structure and fit of a hat while drying is to wear it. Molds right to the shape of my noggin.

Every single hat cleaning video its the white salt stains. Not a dark stained lighter hat. Which is what I have. Nice work including that with one of these hats. Great video.

Put your hat is the top rack of the dishwasher with a bowl underneath it. Works perfectly!

For dry and to keep their shape I like to use a balloon lightly inflated inside the hat, place them upside down over a towel and apply a fan.

Have you had any experience with the colors running? I have a red Phillies hat and I’m worried the white P will turn pink. Any advice is appreciated!

Shampoo+Conditioner. That is what my hatter said to clean hats and caps with. Basically everything around hats made from cloth can be washed with shampoo. What's good for our skin and hair is also good for the cloth.
And it smells nice on top.
