Throughout history when every a woman is trying to protect and defend herself with whatever she can, men and in turn the law sought to take away her protection instead of stopping the mistreatment. Because how dare they protect themselves from the MEN who should be free to do whatever they wish to whom and whatever they wish. It's their ~self~ God given right.

Damn right. It's honestly scary how similar things are now, over a hundred years later.

Very true. I'm in the UK and here we are not even allowed pepper spray. The government wants us to be easy fodder for the incoming perverts.

    Bring back hat pins!!!
I love men arguing that women shouldn’t carry hat pins in an era when men could carry guns as a matter of course.
    Possum with a gun!!

I am an old man now,83, who was raised in part by my grandmother. She was born in 1879 and was in the San Francisco Earthquake and Fire. She workrd as a millner, a hat maker of those big hats women wore in 1900. She did indeed talk abouit hatpins to protect herself from "mashers and sex fiends."

Possum with a gun has me heart. More creeps need to be pinned. Either legally in court, or with a sharp bit of metal if needs be

I wear hatpins and I've used them to great effect a number of times. Nothing gets a man to reconsider his course of action faster than a long needle stabbed through his hand.

Good for you! I still wear hats, but my hair was never thick enough for a hatpin to work. That didn't stop me from carrying one on the subway, though.

"Possum with a gun" is my new favorite thing, I want that on a t-shirt :=). As for the "hatpin menace" it disgusts me that creepy men are apparently old as time :=(. That said very good video, I knew that suffragettes had their hatpins taken away in court but always thought that was just a precaution and not an actual thing that happened

Just visited Greenfield Village in Michigan last weekend. One "shop" had Victorian hats and hat pin display cases as well as two women showing visitors how to wear the hat with the pin.
