I like the gig you said you made when you piece the ends of the bias binding together. Maybe you can do a video where you show us how we can make our own. Pretty please.
This video was a good reminder for me to consider rounding the corners on bed quilts. The quilt on our bed hangs down a ways and it's easy to catch your foot on the corner of the quilt when rounding the bed. When I washed the quilt this summer (quite an undertaking to launder a king size quilt in the bathtub!), I discovered the bottom corners were the dirtiest part of the quilt. I wish I had made those corners rounded!
I still have some of the binding fabric, so rounding the corners after the fact is a consideration. I will have to decide if it's worth taking out some of the quilting.
I appreciate your informative tutorial. When I finish my binding, I sew the ends together and then just fold it over the edge and sew it down. I like that there is less chance of the edges fraying because they are machine sewn. That magnet system looks very interesting. Is it safe for quilters with pacemakers? Strong magnets are dangerous.
I’m not new to sewing but am new to quilting. Your tutorials are my first choice for technical advice. Thank you for your clear and well-paced videos. I’m hoping you keep offering the quilting cruises a few more years as one of those is high in my bucket list! You are very much appreciated!
I led a Quilts for Kids chapter for 10 years. During that time we received many lovely quilts but it was obvious some quilters struggled with the bindings. So I started a "Better Bindings" class at a couple of local quilt shops. I encourage using striped fabric because the barbershop appearance really adds some sparkle to a finished quilt. One tip I share with the students is to lay the ruler so that the ends of the strips are parallel to the stripes on the fabric. (Some ends may need to be recut to become parallel with the stripe but it's SO worth it in the end!) Then when joining the strips, all the stripes will now be parallel to the seam, instead of leaving mismatched, choppy right angles that are so obvious. The seams are neatly disguised -- nearly impossible to see from a few feet away. When the lines of the stripe are widely spaced (as in the black on white one you show in the video) I try to make the seams so they just reveal the line in the fabric. I have never seen this tip in quilting books yet it almost guarantees tidy and invisible seams. I am hooked on this method!
Great timing! I’m doing a whole bunch of binding in the next few days. Could you please do a video on how you made the jig? I like that a lot and would love to make one myself.
Thanks for another great video. But oh pretty, pretty please tell us more about your jig (4:52). I'll have to go back and watch the video again, I was blinded by tool envy. Thanks anyway for all your work, it makes a big difference.
Yeah, I think this is one that I’ll just keep in the back pocket, probably for a long time. Honestly, I’ll enjoy seeing quilts made this way by other quilters, and leave it at that. Thanks Karen for sharing all that you do. 👍❤️😊
I've always wanted to try a scalloped border but could not find a good tutorial on bias binding until now. I love how you make everything seem so doable with your precise and easy to follow instruction. Thanks Karen, your videos have helped me really elevate my quilting. 🤩
Very interesting,! Very necessary , very valuable, what a treasure you have shared with us, thank you you’re most gracious. Love this channel, I have subscribed., can’t wait to get more❤❤❤❤❤.😊 keep them coming❤
I’ve watched your videos for a few years & have learned so much! I appreciate the time & effort you’ve put into helping us. Don’t know how much longer I’ll be able to quilt but I’m sure I’ll always watch your videos!
I needed to do bias binding for a project, but had never made it myself. I watched at least six tutorials, and was so discouraged! Even "simple" directions had me tied in knots. Then I found your tutorial. AAAAhhhhhh! Fold the fabric, cut from the fold. Got it!!! Thank you so so so much!
Very happy you addressed this, the bias binding and curves! I've been wanting to do the candy cane striped binding but haven't researched it yet.Thank you for all the useful information and instructions. As always Karen, you Rock!
Amen sistah on the Sewtites cutting system! Paired with a new gate leg table I picked up used, I no longer hate cutting. The beveled ruler is [chef’s kiss] fantastic, and I, too, am reaching for those boosters more and more. The mat is heavy, though, so some may need to plant it on a spot and keep it there rather than shuffling like I’m doing. Worth the price tag. Never going back to a regular mat.
I make utilitarian quilts that will be used daily, so I do the old fashioned fold-over from the backing to create my bindings. I create type of mitered corner for the turns.
This video was so very helpful to me. I am dyslexic, and cutting stripes on the bias just defeated me, even though I have watched countless other videos….so I didn’t. But I had a piece of fabric that I really wanted to be on the bias. I followed your method of folding and SUCCESS. Thank you, thank you for helping a dyslexic, angle challenged quilter😊.
Thanks Karen! This came at a perfect time since I am just about ready to bind a quilt that I made for a child...a perfect one to try something new. I think I will try rounding the corners and using a striped bias binding.
Thank you SO MUCH for explaining in such a clear and obvious manner so that I could totally understand the best way for me and how to end your binding.
Great tips Karen. I have rounded corners on quilts before but never used a striped fabric. Love candy stripes so time to give it a go. Clever little jig for joining ends and the Sewtite mat and magnets look great. Love your Care Bears quilt.👏♥️🇦🇺
Lol, I hate binding and only ever made steaigjt binding for quilts. Then i became a bag maker and discovered a bit of a necessity for bias binding. Im slowly getting better at it.
I always learn new things watching you! I have avoided bias binding in favour of the cross grain for those mitered corners. But your information on wear and tear has me thinking I should be brave and try something new.
Finally…I just have to slow down and watch each flip and step for bias binding cuts…..scary stuff for me!😮 Thanks so much ..I’m gonna try it ..even if I screw it up …lol 😢
Karen, thanks for so many great quilting tips and conversations! I constantly sew my binding strips together the wrong direction and have to rip them out! I saw you use a jig. Could you share how you made it. I'd love to have one, too! Thank you! I look forward to many more interesting and informative videos!
Karen, this is another informative tutorial. You are my favourite RUclips quilter, having made your 3-in-1 tool and used your binding instructions over and over, so that my many pieced tops have been transformed into completed quilts. Instead of fearing binding, I now welcome it.♥️ Thank you for highlighting more binding techniques to think about and try.👏🏻
Great tutorial. One question. Please what is the name of designer and manufacturer of the multi color piece of fabric with quarter square triangles? Is it whole cloth or did you make? I’m watching on my phone and I’m not certain if it’s delightful little blocks you’ve joined or whole cloth. Thank you for your lovely videos and a voice that is pleasant to hear.
Thank you so much. Such great information. I noticed the wee blue weights early on in video. Hope they ship to New Zealand 🇳🇿 love ❤️ your videos. Thanks for sharing 😊
Back again to learn more. I assumed I would stick to simple bindings. Then, I fell in love with a plaid that just needed to be the binding. WOF isn't the best angle to showcase the fabric. My next trick will be adding a double flange to the plaid binding to bring out the colors in the plaid.
I've only made bias binding - never tried the straight version. I just feel happier using it, especially when the stripes look diagonal. Cheers Karen xx
Wonderful reminder tutorial!! I like doing continuous binding; I don’t think I’ve ever seen the last example (or it’s been a long time) so will watch again. Thank you!!
Thank you Karen, very informative and the exact timing for me as just going to bind a couple off patchwork blankets so will follow your turorial. thank you for sharing with us x
I'm an absolute beginner with quilts (I've done 2 and neither should count.) I have been struggling with how to finish the edges of some oddly shaped tummy time blankets, this tutorial really helped me to wrap my head around how to approach it! I think today it's time I attempt it again, Thank you!
I love bias binding, but only use it when I want a bias stripe from a fabric that has a vertical/horizontal stripe or when I want to have curved corners. It is unbelievable how easy curved corners lay n with the bias binding. It’s probably why most all of my grandmother’s quilts had curved corners! ❤
I use regular and biased binding. I’ve tried technique 1 and 2 for making bias binding, but generally stick to method 1 for cutting. I don’t like cutting long strips with scissors because it often comes out too wonky. Great video!
Hi Karen. I am a brand new quilter. Subscribed to your channel and love what I have watched so far. I am waiting for my new Janome skyline s 7 to arrive. I am not new to sewing but it’s been a while. 20 years I used to sew all my daughter baby clothes. Enjoyed that so much. Moved on to doll clothes and then took a break. Mostly because I wore out my hand me down Elna. So excited to get started with some easy projects. I was thinking about a wall handing. Could you share some beginner project ideas. Thank you. Rosmary.
Thank you Karen for all your videos, they are soooo helpful ☺️. Is the tool you use to line the binding pieces together made with a 3D printer or can I buy one from somewhere? It looks like a timesaving tool ☺️
I always use bias binding even though it breaks my brain to figure it out each and every time.😜. I figure there is so much effort put into a quilt that I want the binding to last as long as possible. I have never rounded my corners though and I am going to have to try that.
I do the tube method, known as continous bias binding. Before using it I thought it must take longer, but I've found it much faster for me, especially if I need a lot of binding. But I've never seen the one where you don't cut through, I'll have to try that.
For me it works much better to put the front and back right sides together and sew like a duvet cover. When it is turned right side out, I topstitch on all sides.
Thanks a great tutorial. I have been bias binding my quilts for a very long time. To me they are cosier if they don't have pointy corners. 😊 But beware of polka dots or any graphic pattern that is printed on the diagonal. You have to fussy cut so the dots are all the same. I can't be bothered with that so no polka dot binding for my quilts. 😊🇨🇦
I love this video! Do you have a video that shows how you made your "jig" to sew the binding strips together? I always have trouble with that part. Thank you!
Off topic-Since you are a long time quilter, which rotary blades have you found to be the best, sharpest and longest lasting blades, tungsten or titanium? Thanks- love your videos LOL so much fun to watch 😁
@@JustGetitDoneQuilts Maybe you could do a video on how to use and maintain the cutters. I'd like to see you sharpen one. Also how you made your jig. Thanks.
I love watching your videos. Always learn so much. The last quilt I made I moved the needle to the right so that the feed dogs would completely contact my fabric as you showed in another video and it helped so much! Did your hubby make that wooden tool you show for putting binding strips together? Or where can I get that? I made your binding tool from template plastic but I’d also love to have that wooden thingy. 😊
Karen LOVE all your videos. I usually cut straight grain binding but needed to do some on the bias for something round. What is that tool you used at 4:49 minutes?? I need that! 😭🤣

Yes please 😊

I still have some of the binding fabric, so rounding the corners after the fact is a consideration. I will have to decide if it's worth taking out some of the quilting.

Rounding corners?!!!! Yes! Thank you, Karen. Very helpful.
Stripey binding tickles my eyes in just the right way. Love it! 😍
I love your esthetic, and even though I don’t quilt, and never will, I enjoy watching your videos!
Thank you so much!
I didn't know that my bias bindings were stronger than regular bindings. Thank you.
Makes sense, that bias binding can resist wear.
Love the rounded corners on a square or rectangular quilt!!! Never thought of using rounded corners, I always use bias binding, so this will be great!
