Building A HIBERNACULUM - 🐸 A Secret Underground Wildlife Haven

  • Continuing on in my quest for a wildlife friendly garden, today I am building a hibernaculum which is a series of underground chambers for amphibians to use throughout the winter to protect themselves from the cold, and a safe space for them to hibernate. It might also attract solitary bees, plus other insects, which would be lovely.
    I believe we should all try to encourage birds, mammals and insects to visit and live in our gardens. This can help to look after local wildlife, keep valuable green spaces thriving and control garden pests by encouraging natural predators. From large gardens to window boxes, all homes can be made more wildlife friendly.
    Building a hibernaculum needn’t cost any money. Mine was made with things I already had, and I collected all the wooden twigs and sticks from my local bridlepath. My only outlay was around £20 for the little wooden bridges I bought to cover over the 3 entrances (made from soil pipe) and these were bought from Amazon UK … here is the link:
    Trixie Natural Living Brücke, 28... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000OLUT1...
    I also mentioned in this video the treatment I used for the mosquito larvae in my pond, and here is the link for that:
    The Mosquito Company, Mosquito... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BNM1QG3...
    I hope you enjoy this video and that it inspires you to think about creating a wildlife friendly garden yourself.

    Uh wow Janette, what an absolutely brilliant idea and how brave of you to do this in your garden, when most people wouldn’t ‘disturb’ their garden for projects like this! But it’s people like you nature needs!! I hope you soon have lots of happy creatures move in! Just be patient. It can take a while! We have bird house and it took two years before the first birds nested in it….but they’ll find those rare places eventually and move in! Just make sure your garden is accessible (a little whole in the fence here and there). Unfortunately new gardens are very fenced in and makes it hard for creatures to move through the gardens nowadays. But fingers crossed, you will soon see some little creatures moving about!! Love it!❤️🦔🐛🐞 Happy gardening from 🇨🇭

      Thank you so much Mari that’s so nice of you and really encouraging to hear they eventually found your birdhouse. So I’m hopeful and it will be so great even if only one little creature has a comfortable winter in my hibernaculum. Thanks for watching and I wish you a fabulous week 🐸😎

    Hi Janette, Oh my Gosh! You did a fabulous job, and the planting looks so natural. I live in So. California, Zone 10a, and I have lots of lizards. I don't have a hibernaculum, but I have lots of nooks and crannies with rocks, twigs, etc in my garden. Also, it doesn't freeze here, although activity slows down in December and January. I enjoy all the wildlife in my garden. You may or may see any wildlife, but trust me, they will find it! There needs to be more gardeners like you, who care that much.😊 Happy Gardening!

    Wow, what a project, basically free and so practical for those needing a cosy hideaway and won't be disturbed in any spring or autumn clean ups! With all the planting I doubt the mound will be noticeable! And, much as I love Gardeners World, I've not seen as many episodes as I have of yours for the past two or three years (Sorry Monty!). My sister has three camera traps so that we can watch the hedgehogs and were pleased to see the wood mice too, despite them taking so many peapods last year. This year we have grown them in tubs that the mice can't climb. Your pond has settled in so well and the trickling water sounds lovely!

    Well done Janette, it's fab that you are creating a safe environment for all the little wildlife creatures you share your garden with. You'll have to get rid of the un natural faux grass next. My wildlife pond is fab I love peering in to see what's happening below the surface. Recently it seems to have been a breeding magnet for slugs, 🤢not exactly what I wanted to attract, those slimy critters. Our resident frog "Francesca" just sits in the pool ignoring the slugs, like chill out man.🐸✌😆 Thankyou for sharing. 🐞🌻🌱

      Oh how funny that you have such a laid back frog 🐸 I’m forever peering in the pond, absolutely nothing that I can see as yet and I’m sure there are microscopic things in there. As for the grass, I know real grass is far far better for nature but I forgive myself, to my way of thinking it’s no different to if it was paved over with no grass at all like a courtyard and it’s so much easier 😊 thanks for watching and have a wonderful week 🐸😊

I hope Richard was suitably impressed with all your hard work. I do hope you see a little somebody emerging from one of the tunnels on day. Do you ever have hedgehogs in your garden? Hi Janette, what a lot of effort and imagination to do this. As I was watching, I was worried about how it would work out and what it would look like. I was also worried about where you would put the Willow. However, I needn't have worried because it all turned out. 😊😊😊

      Hello there Pauline and thank you! I was thinking the exact same things you were 🤣 especially if it was too shallow to plant in, but then I mounded it up so I think it will be ok and if those plants could grow in the little hanging basket spaces then surely they’ll be fine where they are now? Hope so! I can always add a few more bags of soil on top. Thanks for watching and have a really happy week 🐸😊

    This is an unusual idea for a wildlife sanctuary. I've not heard about it before. But then, I'm not familiar with ponds etc. You have made an excellent job of it. Lost a few plants last week. Good morning Sharon! How terribly sad that you’ve lost plants to the heat especially after they’d come through the winter. I do find the summer difficult to keep everything going. Hi Janette, quite an interesting project, you're creating a wonderful ecosystem for our little friends. We have something similar in our yard except it's above ground. It's just a wood pile of twigs and branches. I've seen spiders and other creepy crawlies making it their home. I know the frogs will show up soon, who wouldn't want to live in such luxury. • @TheEnthusiasticGardener
      @TheEnthusiasticGardener  8 дней назад

      Hi there. I did see a frog in my garden about a year ago but I don’t know east happened to him. Apparantly the only frogs you can buy over here are to be kept as pets in tanks and it’s illegal to release those into the wild (which includes garden ponds) and it’s also illegal to capture wild frogs to bring into your gardens. You can buy frog and toad tadpoles from a place in Scotland I found, but they’re already sold out now, but I have my name down to be advised when they have more, but I think I’ve missed it for this year. So I’ll have to be patient but you never know!! Hope you’re having a lovely week 🐸😊
