🌟SUMMER IS HERE🌟 Wonderful Weekend Fixing Garden Problems🌟

  • Today is my first garden video for Summer 2024 so that’s exciting, and I always think of Summertime as being quieter in the garden. That’s not to say, of course, that there’s less to do - more that all the Spring garden projects and much of the transplanting (my constant moving plants around) is hopefully done, and now its time to focus on maintenance and just keeping everything happy, particularly if the weather gets hot.
So today I’m moving my last (I hope) plant from one spot to another - my beloved PICEA PUNGENS Hoopsii and this was a tougher job than I had expected.
I’m also pruning my roses after their first flush of blooms are over. Unfortunately I have to completely cut back my oldest rose as it’s suffering with Rose Black Spot, which is very sad but I don’t want it to spread to my other roses - an Olivia Austin, James L Austin, Schneewittchen and a Santana.
I’ve staked everything that needs staking too. And I’m trimming back my Euonymus hedge over in Shady Corner.
I’ve treated all the plants with CHLOROSIS with Sulphate of Iron - the one I’ve bought is from Amazon:
    Westland 20600027 Sulphate of... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001P3SMJ...
I’ve also noticed my Juniper Rocky Mountain Blue Arrow is not looking its best right now, so I’ve trimmed all the brown and dried up bits from that and it’s looking a lot better for it.
Finally, I discovered that my pond was full of mosquito larvae and so I googled for a solution and found a mosquito pond barrier from The Mosquito Company on Amazon:
    The Mosquito Company, Mosquito... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BNM1QG3...
It promises not to be harmful to any other wildlife, and works by creating a very fine silicon barrier to the water which prevents the larvae from breathing and kills them. And I am very pleased to say it’s been a success.
So … a very productive couple of days in the garden! Happy Summer to you all ☀️

Great work, Janette! ⭐️ I especially enjoyed your rose pruning tutorial - will definitely take more care next time I do mine!! 😃

I left my picea growing in a border. I tried to keep it small by trimming back but eventually had to cut it down it was growing so fast. I love your garden. I have been busy making flower beds from my lawn. The lawn is now half the size but I have more room for lovely plants!

Good morning Margaret ☀️ I guess that’s what’s going to happen to mine in the end, another example of me planting for instant impact rather than considering mature sizes. But at least it has more space for the time being. Sounds like you’ve been really busy too! Hope you have a really lovely week 💜😊

    Good afternoon Janette
Yes,i discovered ants around my holly bush. Used ant powder. It has worked for now. Your pond looks so established. My green garden waste bin has lost a wheel,so I'm awaiting a replacement from the council. Promised me one within 10 days. Still not here. I don't know whether to ring and remind them 💕

Hi Sharon, I didn’t have any ant powder, I did run inside and look under my kitchen sink and then rummaged around in my shed too 🤣 but couldn’t find anything. I hope I drowned them in the bucket of water and I’ve also been another tip to put cinnamon powder around the base as well. I think you should give them a call and a nudge about your green waste bin 😉 have a lovely week ☀️😎😊

Great job, Janette!🎉 i had two arborvitae in pots that needed to be planted in the landscape. It was the same thing! The roots were huge! I didn't know about root pruning back then, so I dug HUGE holes! They were so deep that I had to get in the holes to keep digging.😂 I was in so much pain that I booked an appointment with my chiropractor! I've learnt my lesson. My roses have black spot, but the Japanese beetles have eaten all the leaves and blooms off of them anyway. I'm thinking of pulling them all out.

My heart went out to youhaving to cut down that beautiful rose! I am trying a companion planting for my roses - anything from the allium family is to reduce the blackspot. I started last year and there is definitely much less blackspot. I just cut off the affected leaves and I make sure to clear away all the fallen leaves in Autumn to provent the black spot living in the soil over the winter!

Enjoyed your video. One suggestion for roses is to top dress with compost/ manure once a month. Helps with all rose problems. Also, improve air circulation. Someone suggested plant salvia around them. I find mine look sad after first flush. I mentioned my King Charles Rose last week. It actually has two flowers on it! I love how your pond is doing with the grasses.

Great video again, it will be interesting to see how fast your Picea grows now it’s in the ground. They can get large. Your Juniper looks fine to me, all the new growth is fresh and healthy, it’s just the old leaves/branches that are browned, perfectly normal but a bit unsightly, however your maintenance will deal with that.
I found a frog in my garden 2 days ago. In the pond? Of course not, it was in a plastic trough I had collected rain water in! Transferred to the pond but I bet he didn’t stay.
We have just had a new fence put up, I had to move lots of plants out of the way, unfortunately I have done my back in painting the fence (the joys of getting old) and cannot get on with finishing the fence and putting the plants back. So annoying.

Lovely video Janette! It’s satisfying as a viewer to watch you accomplishing so much, especially as I’m hiding out indoors at the moment from the intense heat!
A quick note above the frogs- from my online research when I was looking into making a pond, the consensus seemed to be it would need to be minimum a metre deep in order for frogs to feel safe and set up home?
I remember that fact as it put me off making a little pond for the moment,as they were all saying unless it’s that deep you would get mosquitoes and undesirables 😞
I really hope the mosquito thing you got helps, as it’s a beautiful little pond you made, especially with the fountain ❤

Wow, that ‘Hoopsii’ was a beast! Getting all those maintenance chores done is so satisfying and collectively makes your garden look so pretty. We have been incredibly dry all month with just a smattering of rain here and there with temps in the 90’s for days on end. I have to work in my garden very early, around 6:00 - 7:30 and then the sun is just unbearable. We got a tiny bit of rain yesterday so I won’t have to water today, thank goodness. I’ve taken inspiration from you and planted a few bolder colored plants this year: coral colored purslane and bright yellow yarrow as well as some brightly colored coleus. I’m very happy with how it looks!

That was a huge root structure when you pulled up the "Hoopsii". You did well to get it out. I'm always planting things without taking into consideration the final height/spread of the plant. I know it's hard when our seeds don't germinate but this year has been the worst that I've ever known. My garden is normally full of Sunflowers but I only had about six seeds germinate this time. The weather has had a lot to do with it. Too wet and too cold. The good thing with gardening is there's always next year to try again. Shame we don't live nearer to one another Janette as you could've had some of my Zinnias. I did a really late sowing of them and they've been one of the things that's been successful.

    • @TheEnthusiasticGardener

I know Wendy, when will we ever learn? 🤣 I don’t want to move anything else! I could count on both hands the number of plants which are in their first original spots 🤣 oh well done for your zinnias though, I never have luck with seeds. I don’t know if you remember a few years ago, I had a whole growlight system put in our cabin and trays and trays of seeds, after weeks of growing and hardening them off, I planted them out and the slugs ate them all! So disheartening, plus I caused mould in the cabin which Rich had to fix because of all the moisture! I’m giving up on the seeds and leaving that to all you experts!! Thanks for watching, have a lovely week ☀️😊

Hi Janette, another lovely video and your garden lots wonderful at this time of the year. I particularly love all the water features. And well I was eager for you to give us an update on your pond! As I may have mentioned, I would love a wildlife pond but we have such a high mosquito pressure in the area that I am very worried about creating another habitat for them to breed in. But I will definitely order the pond barrier and give it a try. As the larvae appear in any tiny bit of standing water I have no lack of testing areas around my garden. Thank you so much for the recommendation! Happy gardening from Switzerland 🇨🇭

Hi Janette, that was fun, for me anyway, you were very efficient. I do believe that with all the rain we've had, it just washed all the goodness out of the soil, I went around with my homemade nettle tea and it seems to have done the trick. Because of the extreme humidity all of my roses which are all new and David Austin, got some black spot so I cut of the leaves which were infected earlier on in the year and that seems to have worked. Keeping fingers crossed. As you say, it's summer at last and so lovely not to rush things between showers. Things are growing well under the circumstances and some things too well. Last year I planted from seed some equinops globe thistle, I planted them in threes 😢 they are enormous 😮 and I'm having to cut them back before they flower. I will deal with those in the autumn, my neighbour will have them, and I'll have to think of something else 😉 thanks for sharing your beautiful garden with us. I can't wait to see what you're adding to your pond. I'm still waiting for frogs to come to mine. I saw one 2 years ago and I was so excited and then he disappeared. I can only get out early for an hour or so. I’m jumping off topic for a minute but I just wanted to mention something about the foliage in your garden.
