I Know you're not a mechanic, but do consider buying a breaker bar for loosening those stubborn nuts or bolts. They're cheap and effective. Also a bit of WD40 does wonders. And regarding the tailgate lock, if you would have removed the seven flathead screws which hold the panel underneath the latch on the inside of the tailgate, you could have unlocked and opened it that way. Nice car either way.

    • @willr322gt

That is the SJ Wagoneer and it looks like it has the 327 AMC engine from Rambler in it. There were a number of engines used, one being the 350 Buick Dauntless engine that was a popular engine option. That vehicle was in production until 1991; 4 years after Chrysler bought AMC and still used the 5.9 liter AMC engine with the Motorcraft 2100 carburetor. GREAT VIDEO!

Good job Mitch! I believe what appeared to be cacti were actually spines, which grow on the cactus. The spines can detach easily from the plant and blow away in a slight breeze. Essentially, they are similar to leaves on a tree. I’m guessing they blow into cars like leaves do. Deserts are usually very windy so when a car door is opened, a lot get in.

Hantavirus is a respiratory virus and is only transmitted by inhaling aerosolized virus particles from mouse droppings so as long as he's wearing an N95 mask, or higher (which he is), he's fine. The gloves he's wearing are fine to protect him from everything else. You can't absorb hantavirus through your skin.

Some answers about the cacti: certain cacti species can actually reproduce asexually, meaning they don't need a flower or pollinator to reproduce. As for the lack of soil, that's not a problem either! Cacti can grow in sand or even gravel, and can't tolerate excessive moisture: making the inside of a car very desirable, combined with the heat and shelter from winter winds. The remnant gravel and sand in the car was obviously more than enough for them.
The interior of BC is very dry, and they have native cactus species, so they might even have come from a cactus chunk that hitched a ride on the previous owner's clothes, or even pets if they were present. All it takes is a few decades of neglect for these little guys to thrive!

To answer your question about the cactus, there are several "jumping cactus" and "walking cactus". One of them, if you even brush it gently, you will knock off a piece of it. It's how it reproduces, by getting stuck to something and traveling. If you try and pull it out with your hands, you'll get even more needles in you. Wind, animals, tumbleweeds, could have all gotten the cactus in there.

Incredible Jeep, amazing detail job! Considering where the poor car was, and for how long, it's in not-horrible shape i think. Of course the paint is completely shot but, despite having been covered by approximately one million metric tons of Canadian snow melting off over the decades, the bodywork, at least from this video, appears to have little rust - which is incredible.

First time ever I've been side-tracked away from one of your videos, but I swear it was in a good cause. Your cacti questions got me thinking, then googling, and I now have a theory... In nature, cacti seeds travel by hitching a ride inside the birds/smaller animals that eat their fruit. So when they are 'deposited', they have a little organic matter with them. But that together with the dust, dirt and droppings that accumulate inside an abandoned car - especially one whose door won't close properly, and we have our 'soil'. Cacti don't like a loamy potting mix/soil: they like sandy, free-draining homes which is pretty similar when u think about it to the gunk you vacc'd of the floors here. You get a bit of moisture in there - 42 BC winters and summers with no aircon likely proved its own, without seals breaking - and the seed likely germinated, growing into the first cacti, and then they just grow pups like cacti in pots. Very happy to be corrected by someone with actual knowledge - I'm no botanist - but that's good enuff to satisfy my brain itch: hopefully it'll hold you too. ❤❤

I still gets cactus spines in my hands every once in a while when I work back there...

I couldn't get them out at first because they have a hook on the tip of the thorn that I had to just pull out. I'm very curious about those cacti in the Jeep as well. So random.
