RE20 for me. It sounds a little more natural.

I've used both mics and going through a RE20 phase. Question; what shock mount are you using on your RE20?

It’s the gator frameworks universal shockmount. I believe it’s the 44-48 one cause I use it at the base of the mic. I can’t recall exactly cause it’s been a while since I’ve purchased it.

So they have almost opposite response curves where it matters. Each dips where the other bumps. The SM7B has a bump 4-6kHz & a dip 6-8. The RE20 dips 3-5 & bumps 6-12. While I prefer the RE20, the distinctive sibilance bump always sounds a little unconnected to the rest of the sound to me. While I hate to admit it, long periods of talk might be better suited to the SM7B because sibilance sizzle can get fatiguing; whereas for short bursts (between songs, live ad reads etc in broadcast) the RE20 will stand out and grab attention. Also its slight bump in the bottom end helps give it that big broadcast sound.

Appreciate your insights. I have heard from others as well that they don’t prefer the RE20 for long form material or long periods of conversation.

I think it boils down to marketing. My SM57 with a Fethead sounds as good as either but does not look as cool. A Rode Podmic with a preamp will sound as good as either also. BUT everyone in broadcast has a SM7B…so go figure

The SM57 and fethead probably comes very close to the SM7B but I’m willing to bet it will not sound like the RE20. As for the Podmic I can in most cases tell the difference but it still sounds good. Truth be told, most listeners aren’t going to care.

There is just something about the RE20. I think people gravitate towards the sm7b because we've gotten so used to expecting that quality of sound in spoken recordings, but the re20 sounds more like a real person. The plosives are a bit unfortunate, but i still like it better.

I personally do think it has a slight edge to the SM7B in terms of sound. It’s funny that the only thing that changed after over 50ish years is making it availabe in black.
