So you were able to get enough gain thru the SM7B without using a cloud lifter or fethead? Whenever I use my Scarlett 18i8 I never have enough gain so I have to use a booster. The only way I’ve been able use it without a booster is by connecting my SM7B to my Rodecaster Pro II.
Dan, I want to use mixpre3 for Smule app. I am not able to power my three with my iPhone 15 Pro. I was wondering how where are you able to make it work? Did you make a video for that? Thanks.
Thanks for asking, I should clarify that while I was able to do so… I had to have the batteries attached to the mixpre and then plug in the usb-c cord while the device was already on. The Mixpre will then detect the usb-c cable from the IPhone and ask if you would like to remain on the batteries or switch to the usb-c power (it will default to “low power” mode when you do this and you will know because the battery light will be an orange/yellow color). Just so you are aware, I am not certain how great this is for your iPhones battery but it technically is possible to power the Mixpre from an iPhone (even though it’s in low power mode).
If you have the SM7db the nice thing is it doesn’t need a higher end audio interface or recorder with a ton of gain. However you need to enable 48 volt phantom power in your audio interface/recorder to drive the preamp inside the SM7dB. You would connect the XLR cable to the interface and then send that signal to your iPhone (or whatever smartphone you have) via usb-c or lightning. You could look at a Zoom F3 or the new Zoom H4 Essential (I believe the latter lets you send the audio out and simultaneously record audio internally to the recorder).
@@xdanielpatrick okay I just started looking into mics today. So you would essentially need to get the mic (SM7dB) with something like the zoom F3 and Zoom H4 Essential. Or are those just preference and you can plug the mic directly to your phone with the USB-c.
@@Jae_TodayI only mentioned the F3 and the H4 Essential because they can provide 48v phantom power to the SM7dB, could be any audio interface with 48v phantom power. The difference between the SM7B and the SM7dB is the “dB” version has a built in preamplifier to add extra clean gain as the original SM7B is a “gain-hungry” mic. The thing with the SM7dB is if you want to engage the preamp on the mic, you have to be supplying 48v phantom power (which a usb-c cable can’t do on its own). Another solution and I’m not 100% sure how well it works is the Shure MVX2U which you could use. It appears to provide 48v phantom power and it’s super compact. Only downside I see is if you want to send two or more mics directly to the iPhone (like if you have a guest you might want a zoom f3 or something like that). Hope this all helps!
@xdanielpatrick I'm struggling to get audio from the mic through the mixer 6 Mark 2 interface into my iPhone 14. Were there specific settings on the interface to get it to work? I've tried USB C and USB A (while USB C was powering interface)
Hey, it’s been a little while as I no longer have the iPhone 14 pro but I believe you have make sure your audio output is on the usb port within your mixpre settings.
Many Thanks for the video! I purchased the exact set and have iPhone 14 pro max, but the sound doesnt come through to iPhone 😢 any ideas on why? Did you changed any settings? When you attach the cable to iPhone, do you get any messages? I have tried with two cable, same thing, iPhone records video with its own mic… Many Thanks for your help!
Thanks for checking this out. Are you using a Mixpre 6II or another audio recorder? I would check your output settings on your interface. I would also try plugging in the lightning cable into the phone first before opening up the camera app.
The interface is a Sound Devices Mixpre6II but you could use something more affordable and compact like a Zoom f3. Nothing else was connected in this video to boost the gain.
Great material, can I ask you, how do you set up the interface? I have focusrite scarlet solo and shure sm7bdb. On my interface is „inst”, „48V” and „air”. Yesterday I bought it😅 And I have iPhone 15 pro. So I suppose that „inst” is for instruments, but if I have to press 48v or air? I think so😅
I am not as familiar with the focus rite scarlet but I can tell you that “48V” is for 48 volt phantom power. Some microphones require enabling 48 volt phantom power to use them (usually condenser microphones). Some microphones do not need this. My SM7B does not require it. However, I believe your SM7DB does require 48 volt phantom power IF you are using the built in pre-amp inside the microphone. If you are not using the built-in preamp then you shouldn’t need to use 48 volt phantom power. You can enable or disable the built-in preamp on the back of the microphone. Hopefully this helps.
I selected “Mono” within Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual. When selecting Mono it specifies, “Make the left and right speakers play the same content.” It changes more than just the audio playback from the speakers from my understanding. So technically you are recording Mono once you do this, it’s just duplicating the recording on both stereo channels. Hope that helps!
Awesome thanks for posting! Shocking the battery powered mixer is $1000 though. Know of any cheaper solutions? At that price might as well just buy the new usbc shure mic even if you have the sm7b already?
I’ve had that audio interface for a few years. As I mentioned you definitely don’t need this specific audio interface. You could use a Zoom F3 which is substantially cheaper and more compact. A Shure MV7 is a decent choice too. However, with an Audio Interface you can plug in multiple mics (for example a podcast setup) and send the audio directly to your iPhone/iPad/Smartphone. You can also use mics that require 48V phantom power with an audio interface as well. So there are some advantages.
What is that audio interface? Can you link it please? Also how are you powering the interface 😂 i dont see another plug anywhere 🧙♂️🪄🔮 Magician over here😮
It's the Sounds Devices MixPre6II: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1503005-REG/sound_devices_mixpre_6_ii_6_channel.html?ap=y&smp=y&msclkid=c3cafc63f25b1dca62eb99531ff3f43f I am powering it with four (4) NiMH batteries within its backplate. It is a relatively power-hungry audio recorder/interface/mixer so you only get maybe an hour/hour and 15 min. with these batteries (alkaline are even less). If you're doing much longer recordings you can use the USB-C port with a power bank/wall adapter. They also have additional battery sleds that utilize Sony NPF style batteries.
Great demo for a portable setup on SM7B. I could see people would like it during trips.
Exactly what I was looking for! We are doing podcast remotely and this is exactly what I needed! Thank u!
Glad it was helpful!
Nice! Great demo of the SM7B in a remote setup. Sounds pretty good.
Appreciate it!
New subscriber because RUclips has you in my suggestions to watch. Keep making these types of tips and tricks videos.
Appreciate you checking this out. I see you're a Mixpre user yourself. Just subscribed.

Since I was using the Mixpre6ii here I didn’t need an additional preamp it goes up to something like 77 or 78dB of gain.
Ok, makes sense. Thank you!

@@xdanielpatrick Thank you for the reply. I will try this.
I’m filming my RUclips videos on my phone, so not really mobile. Anything different I should get to connect the SM7db to my phone if I’m at home?

Honestly if this is just for podcast the dji mic that you can plug to your phone would save you some weight
The DJI Mics are really convenient yes, although I think dynamic mics like the SM7B sound better. Normally I’d just have it on a stand.
