Nice recorder, I love the Tascams, have the DR40 and the DR701D, both excellent recorders with very low self noise, what you have there is a great piece of kit.
thanks to you I now have two little omni mics from earsight and a tascam portacapture x6. going to put something together to add some magnets to the mics now - such helpful info :)
Awesome! Glad to have inspired you. That’s going to be a sick little setup. Yeah, the magnets can be super useful. Just be careful what you stick them to as they can pick up unwanted vibrations which might mess up your recording
Thanks Craig! Yeah the magnets are great. Watch out for vibrations though depending on the surface you stick them to. If the metal is wobbly the mic might pick it up or pick up resonating frequencies. A bit of eq in post or moving the mics around can help sort it though!
@@rarefindssound There seems to be some low frequency rumble, is that the wind? Can it be further filtered or is it a reality I'd have to live with if I do field recordings? Also, how micro-phonic is the Tascam when used with the default mics? Is the handling noise acceptable? Thank you!
Good stuff. Nice little setup but a bit bulky for me with the Tascam. I prefer the F3 and a set of Usi's, but always have the H1n in my backpack. I was hoping Deity would have released their tiny new 32bit PR2 recorder by. now but they're taking ages to do it. That's a real nice option if they ever release it !
Cheers again crypto! Oo i'll have to do some research into the Deity, not heard about that one. Maybe get my hand on one and do a video on it. Yes, the tascam can be a bit bulky sometimes. I think i'll invest in a F3 when im back in the UK. All out of stock when i left for Australia!
@@rarefindssound Cheers. Yeah, the Deity PR2 was shown at audio trade Expo's back in March or April and was scheduled for June/July release I think, and it's still not here. If you search online there are some YTube videos about it from the trade shows and a few shops have a page for it since ages. It's a tiny thing but I seem to remember the functionality is a bit odd, in that it maxes-out at 48kHz and fixed at 32bit. Still, for everyday stuff it should be a great replacement for the H1n and it's so small it fits in a shirt pocket and also has a very decent Bluetooth control App by all accounts. No idea about pricing though.
Haven't heard of the Deity one. Was in the market for an affordable field recorder and H1n or the new about-to-be-released H1 Essential seem to be appropriate. Would you recommend getting an H1 or an older more pro model of Zoom/different brand (which could be cheaper atm)? If so, which one would you recommend? Bugdet - max 100 GBP. Thanks!
@@watzmaaname Personally I forgot the Deity and ordered the new Zoom H1e yesterday, so that should be here in a few days. I got it for 90 bucks and it will replace my old H1n as my "every day carry" recorder when I'm out and about. It records up to 96kHz 32bit, so for that crazy low price I can only recommend that for under 100. Of course you'll also need wind protection and some sort of handle like a pistol grip or small tripod, as the handling noise is also a big factor with these handhelds. So it's up to you. All depends on whether you want to be bothered setting the gain every time or not. If you want to learn how to do that an older Zoom or second hand H1n would be fine as a starter. For me I don't want to set gain on a recorder that's always in my pocket, because when I'm out and about I want to quickly whip out a recorder and press record without any worry of clipping when I hear something interesting. There's a lot of factors to consider really. What do you want it for ? Do you want the added option of a couple of XLR inputs or not ? That could help in future if you get some cheap-ish XLR mics.
Glad I could help! There’s lots of options out there that do a similar job. This was the one I have been running for a while now though with great results
Hi I want to start recording sounds from nature and I learned a lot from your video. I want to make a comparison between sound samples in different frequency range. for example a comparison bet
Sounds great! Lots of different animals operate on different frequencies. There are some sick apps that can work out what birds are singing around you from recordings
Yeah all brilliant options too! I am actually now using my new Sony M10 more as it’s even more pocketable and easy to carry. 192khz is especially great for recording animals to pitch and sound design with
Hi Danielle. Good question! I’m currently working on building up libraries for future sales/releases (keep your eyes peeled) I have a few mini ones on my gumroad & bandcamp account. Currently my main source of income is freelance location sound, sound design & editing. There are many different ways to make money as a sound artist!
Are you pleased to see me or is that Tascam in your pocket .... oh, it's a field recorder. I like what you did with the mics. I have an oldish Rhode NT4 and it is incredibly sensitive and crystral clear, but not in the least bit discreet. Nonetheless it is amazing what we can do with simple tools these days.
Hiya Uve_, do you mean the Zoom H1 for £30-£60? I don’t think I mentioned the price of the Tascam as it is now discontinued. I would however still recommend you get your hands on one in the second hand market if you find one as it’s a brilliant device!
I'm not sure I could pull off the whole project, but I can use a 3d printer. Can your friend post or share the link to the STL or 3MF files for the model?
What would you suggest for microphones to use with a TASCAM DR-05X in a Steel Mill environment? I work in a Steel Mill and I am just starting out with Sound Recording and bought myself the DR-05X
I would recommend one of the pairs of Omnidirectional mics listed at the end of the video. They would be great for picking up the general atmosphere. Try spacing them closer or further from each other to decrease or increase the stereo field. Make sure to buy a pair of mics with a Mini Jack (like in the video), this is how you will plug them into your Tascam
Yeah, it can depend on what I'm sticking them on. Sometimes I will try and find a more solid and isolated surface but other times I'll have to EQ a bit in post if it picks up rumbles etc.
Just noticed a little whoopsie at 5:55. It's spelt CARDIOID not CARDIOD. I am a cardIDIOT 😂

Thank you so much for this video. Love your warm clear style. Those magnet mounts look like a fantastic way to work.

Thanks for the video. The birds sound great.
Thanks for watching! I do miss the beautiful bird sounds of Australia

Love my clippy microphones! I printed myself a blimp for mine in XY and it works great so far.
Awesome! I'd love to see some photo's the setup. Send it on my instagram account @rarefindssound if you have any to share

7:41 the bonus sound is great
Thanks very much! I couldn’t resist the opportunity to capture the tram sound
Very interesting. Thought often about recording those field sounds. But sorry for that dumb question: what do I do afterwards with that sounds?
That's not a dumb question at all. I'm new to the idea too but if I think about it the way I think about "field" photography it makes sense
Danke für dein tolles Video und deine Mühe 👍 ich liebe das Thema!
Danke!

Just wanna ask, where does all your recordings go too?
Like how you make money?

😂😂 I won't be keeping my shotgun microphones in my pocket from now on either
Thanks so much for sharing, super useful !
You're very welcome Mapril!
Awesome content!!!
What did you use to record your dialog in this video? Sounds great, very clean.
Thanks! I used a boya wireless lav mic
I couldn't find the Tascam DR100 MK3 for the price you told. Maybe there are just new models

Is there any chance of getting the files for the clippy enclosures? Would be super handy, have been mulling over the DIY build for a while.
Yeah sure! Send me an email to rarefindssound@gmail.com

How do you get your sounds in the computer? do you use a speciel program?
I mainly use Cubase to edit my files. But just to get it onto the computer you can simply open it up in finder
What are you wearing? Sounds good.
Are you referring to the Lav mic? If so it’s a Boya wireless lav

Don't you get a lot of structure-borne noise with these magnet holders, especially when the Clippys are attached to things like metal railings?
Yeah, it can depend on what I'm sticking them on. Sometimes I will try and find a more solid and isolated surface but other times I'll have to EQ a bit in post if it picks up rumbles etc.

Uši means ears on Croatian language.
Oo nice, I didn't know that! I also apologise for pronouncing it wrong most of the time haha
I've found there is ALWAYS a plane when I hit record too. Drives me mad haha
Haha it's always the case. I think someone should develop a "de-plane" plugin!
@@rarefindssound that would be a serious money maker.
Huh, what kinda mic is that? Oh, it's a banana
😂😂
