Cheap vs. Expensive Wireless Mic for iPhone: DJI vs Maybesta Sound Quality Test

  • In this video I test out the differences between one of the cheapest wireless mics on Amazon made by Maybesta and a professional quality wireless microphone by DJI. While the Maybesta mic does have a lot of sound isolation, the amount of clipping and wireless interference makes it unreliable. The DJI is easy to use and offers much better sound clarity and consistency. This is definitely a case of you get what you pay for. Hopefully this helps if you're searching for a good quality mic to use with your iPhone. This video was not sponsored. I purchased both of these microphones to test out for myself and will be using the DJI mic for my own creator content. You can check out both of these mics using the links below.

    If everyone did comparison videos like this the world would be a much smarter place.
    Usually I’d be 1:34 into a video and I’ve only heard them talk about them selves and seen their intro.

    This is a great test! I really like how natural the DJI system sounds. Yes, it picks up the background noise, but it doesn't excessively alter and process the sound like the cheap alternative does, and it really captures your voice effectively for a wireless system that plugs directly into the iPhone (or other smartphone). Thanks for sharing the video!

    Thank you for the review... I already own the DJI, but was looking for an inexpensive alternative for my wife...so she won't keep borrowing mine. Just as a side note the "popping" is not clipping (which is when the audio waveform is cut off because it exceeds the input circuit recording level). What you're hearing is a dropout, where the transmission/reception is interrupted. Both are terms with specific meaning in the audio world, so it's best to identify them correctly.

    $25 vs $250... Yes the DJI sounds better, but not 10x in my opinion. The Maybesta sounds fine. 80% of the performance at a 1/10 of the price. I'm taking the Maybesta.

    • @GutsmanLoL
      @GutsmanLoL 5 месяцев назад +8

      Idk. I personally hear an enormous difference, mostly in clarity and sheer quality. And to be honest in a lot of cases the Maybesta actually sounds worse than the default iPhone microphone, with the only benefit of the maybesta being you can walk a lot further (which is nice, don’t get me wrong) but aside from that very specific situation, I’d either splurge for the DJI, netting you both a massive increase in sound quality and an increase in range, or save the 25 bucks and use the iPhone microphone if I don’t find myself needing to walk far away from my phone.

    Audacity has a pop / click removal function. What I hear as a music maker, has more to do with the EQ / tone each mic produces. DJI is more natural sounding by far. Interestingly, I've watched females demo cheap mics and they sound better than when a man uses them suggesting the mics have a lot of bass rolloff.

    I just bought the unpronounceable "Sjpzwcrl Wireless Lavalier Microphone" for around $50 (CDN, with 15% taxes!) but, as a former recording engineer used to Shure SM-57s was **HORRIFIED** by the intense compression/clipping (meaning that any sound would have an audible "padding" effect at either end of it effectively muffling any background sounds very unnaturally, so I was looking for something that I can at least manipulate in post-production in iMovie (I don't have FinalCutPro, which I think is overkill for casual videos) but this was a great demo of these microphones .
    I'm now going to check out the prices of the DJI but I already fear it's going to be in the hundreds . . . oh well, the "Sjpzwcrl" (where DO these people come up with these names? I mean, they're Chinese, I know, but "Sjpzwcrl"???) is going back to Amazon TODAY. Thanks for the great video!!

      The receiver plugs in and stays in place though the lightning connector on the iPhone. And good question on the gimbal use, but unfortunately I don’t use a gimbal, just tripod stands, so I can say to that effect. Seeing however that DJI makes gimbals, I’m sure they accounted for that when designing the receiver. Realistically the receiver weighs almost nothing compared to the weight of the iPhone with a case on it.

    • @Type5Reviews
      @Type5Reviews  Месяц назад

      Probably depends on how many people you are interviewing at a time. Having the 2 DJI mics is very easy for one on one style interviews and do think these would work great for that type of format. If you have more than one person you may have to pass the mic around or use the included magnet backer to mount it between the two people and adjust the gain accordingly. But for the money I still think it’s a great option. I’d personally even consider the new DJI mic 2 for its improved noise cancellation, but I still think the original DJI mic has a natural sound approach to noise cancelling and works well. Rode and Shure also make great iPhone mics to look at if you want the portability. But if you’re looking for more of a podcasting format where you sit down with guests you would get even better sound quality with something like a Shure sm7b or mv7, but that would require a lot larger setup without the phones,etc.

    I have the Maybesta and I would say it’s generally early usable in situations where sound frequency isn’t matching. Meaning, if you have people talking in the background, it will pick up everything as if it’s you. If you’re in a situation where it’s a higher or lower frequency than general human voice… It generally does a good job. The only problem is, the sound quality is horrible. To me, it doesn’t transfer any of the lower end of the human voice and I think that’s important when you’re making higher quality videos.
    The Mayabesta mic sounds like you’re talking through a tin can. With limited frequency range. Definitely not for anybody who wants to make quality videos with good audio. There are other options that have tested better and are cheaper than the DJI mic. Like the Hollyland Lark 150. Which is about $200. Saving $100 or so.
