A lot of people were talking about how Samantha was much less powerful in the movie, and though it's true, it would be really awkward if she came out with this powerhouse version of the song when the rest of the movie was more intense, choking-on-words type emotion than power singing. The rest of the movie would seem less than it was, when compared to her, so she kinda had to sing it the way she did so that it wouldn't stick out and just seem out of place in comparison to the rest of the movie.
And I must note, this is lovely.

I think Eponine is supposed to steal the show! She is the personification of the French peasants. I remember the first time I saw the Musical as a young adult. All I could remember years later was Eponine, one of the true great Martyrs of theater.

Bunny completely agree. The movie was about acting mostly..to music

Sadly enough this is definitely true. The director had no clue what he was doing by picking out nightmarish horrific singers who happened to be actors. He humiliated Samantha’s beautiful singing voice and wounded the personification of Eponine. Fantine is not the star of Les Mis it’s Eponine!

Sad to see what used to be the "in the know" area of the arts, Broadway/stage art and it's fan, somehow become so clueless. There is a difference between a broadway musical and a movie musical. The film was meant to be a new mix that has never been done before, and they killed it. With absolutely amazing vocals as far as the talent to put the emotion into the voice AND acting at the same time.
Samantha coming out in the film and doing this, would have meant she wouldn't have been able to act. Broadway musicals put their emotion and acting into voice only. Which is exactly why that art form died down in popularity, and exactly why the majority of broadway actors do NOT become actual/film actors, because they can't actually act. The people in the film can both sing broadway and act, putting the two together means the vocals will not be nearly as clean or clear as if they were on stage doing absolutely nothing but singing.
It's such a simple thing to understand, I really cannot get over how many people seem to be confused.

Zenkiea Literally all of the cast have experience in broadway and sing amazingly. Before making it big, Anne was simple known as the top operatic falsetto in America at her age group. Hugh started in stage and has plenty of awards for his voice. Etc etc. Nextttt.
Comparing their actual singing voices to that of their voices while also doing real acting makes you look ridiculous. 🙄

People commenting on her singing compared to the movie. Fun fact the producers of the movie actually told her to tone down her voice cuz they didn't want her to stand out too much compared to the Hollywood actors.

+Rizwan Jagani +Christiana Blikstad My personal theory on this is that they dialed back the number so it would not outshine the other "famous" number of this song 'I Dreamed a Dream' and Anne Hathaway's "performance" of it. Anne was their best chance at an Oscar for the film and they couldn't afford to have a relative unknown like Samantha outshine her vocally so they dialed Samantha's performance back. She still did a lovely job with it in the film, but as we can tell here, she was capable of so much more. A shame really.

    • @christianablikstad3008
      @christianablikstad3008 8 лет назад +7

Sanjuro That makes a lot of sense. Samantha is Broadway-trained and Anne is not, so put together, Samantha would easily outshine her. Although to be honest, I liked Anne's singing. She's not even close to Broadway, but she hit the notes (more than some did) and she had the emotion needed for the scene. I will always love Lea Salonga, but Anne Hathaway did okay.

    Lyrics:
And now I'm all alone again
Nowhere to turn, no one to go to
Without a home, without a friend
Without a face to say "Hello" to
But now the night is near
    Now I can make-believe he's here
Sometimes I walk alone at night
    When everybody else is sleeping
I think of him and then I'm happy
    With the company I'm keeping
    The city goes to bed
And I can live inside my head
    On my own
    Pretending he's beside me
    All alone
I walk with him till morning
    Without him
I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way I close my eyes
    And he has found me
In the rain the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me forever and forever
And I know it's only in my mind
That I'm talking to myself and not to him
And although I know that he is blind
Still I say, there's a way for us
    I love him
But when the night is over
    He is gone
    The river's just a river
    Without him
    The world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere
The streets are full of strangers
    I love him
    But every day I'm learning
    All my life
    I've only been pretending
    Without me
His world will go on turning
A world that's full of happiness
    That I have never known
    I love him
    I love him
    I love him
    But only on my own

For the love of god, people! You do realise Eponine is a thenardier, not a Disney princess, right? She's not supposed to have crystal-clear clarity to her voice. That's what Samantha Barks masters here.
Lea sings and acts the role very well, but she definitely isn't a thenardier. Eponine is a street rat, not a delicate flower.

Can I just say something. I am In love with this song and I love Eponine so much. I remember when I was twelve years old and coming towards the end of year 7 (my first year at secondary school - coz I'm English) and we were doing a school play called The Rise And Fall Of Mark Anthony, which was a combination of two different Shakespear plays (Julius Ceaser and Anthony And Cleopactra). During the first act me and e few other cast members wer'nt needed, so we got to wait up at the top of the school building in one of the computer rooms. I was really nurvus because the performances at my school are extreemly professional and are really difficult and intnse. I was in that computer room with a couple of year 9s and 10s. Two of them knew of my interest in unrequited love and decided to distract me by introducing two knew Musicals to me (as I also had a strong passion for Musical theater and film Musicals). One of my freinds, Beth, introduced Hamilton to me. The other, Samantha, introduced Les Misérables. She showed me many clips from the movie including: I Dreamed A Dream, Empty Chairs At Empty Tables, One Day More and On My Own. I instintly fell in love with all of these songs, especialy On My Own. I also fell deeply in love with the charactor of Eponine. I vowed that night, at only 12 years old, that I would one day be able to embody the charactor of Eponine. Whether it be on stage or on the screen. I longed to not just play her, but become her. It is now 4 years later and I am still holding on to the promise I made to myself that night. I will not let go of this dream. Someday I know I will play her. I can now connect with the charactor so much more and it would kill me if I were to live my life without playing her. I love Samantha Barks. She is amzing. But I also thank the other Samantha from years ago. She was the girl who introduced this Musical to me and it's thanks to her that I have this dream. These two Samantha's are the best Samantha's that have ever exsisted in my opinion. And I thank God for them both.

The idea for the musical in the film was for it to be realistic and emotive - the belting is idealistic for a stage performance, 'cause you have to fill the whole theatre, but for film, you're up close and personal to a camera, so you can be emotive through other aspects, not just your voice.

Bang on. You hit the nail on the head. Her emotions in the song; her voice on stage and the Movie to me suit the environment as you clearly state. I still argue if she sang another 5 variants they would all be as deliciously appealing.

I prefer Samantha Barks slightly over Lea Salonga as my favorite Eponine. Lea is a bit more technically sound than Samantha, (a little more technically sound than anybody for that matter). If you watch Lea from the 10th-Anniversary she is the perfect picture of how to enunciate every word her jaw is working overtime. This may be because as an English as a second language singer she was pushed early on to pronounce every word. She has amazing voice control. That said, I think Samantha plays/sings the role from a little more desperate and sad place while Lea sings her from a bit of a more defiant and angry place. I think the more sad and hopeless version captures the essence of Eponine's position and her choice to martyr herself a bit better. It was a bad choice to not have Samantha really belt out on my own in the movie. Eponine is supposed to be more empathetic than Cosette. She would have outshined Cossette and Marius in the movie, but she is supposed too. if you watch this theatrical version when the three Kattie, Nick, and Samantha sing together ruclips.net/video/JNk-pcNxy5M/видео.html she drowns them out like they are not there. On My Own is arguably the best song from any musical in the English language. That said, the best-sung line in the 25th-anniversary concert was Sam's delivery of "Ever word that he says is a dagger in me..." in the link, she so perfectly captures in that moment the sheer horror of unrequited love. The choice to tone the arrangement down lessened the movie and probably cost Samantha Barks becoming the next it girl in Hollywood for a few years.

I love love love Lea; time and time again she gives us a brilliant performance. But I *feel* the anguish with Samantha. I think the difference (in my own personal opinion) is Lea has mastered emotional signing, as Samantha has mastered acting. Both emote the perfect Éponine.

I don't find one version less or more powerful than the other when she sings. Samantha Barks is one of those Gems we should all have been aware of a very long time ago. There's a Girl underneath the Woman in her voice that gives an appealing 'pleading' to the song rather than that incessantly british boringly-predictable "Plum in mouth" sound we get from so so many other songsters and Samantha turns her back on this and breaks so far away from this it's an absolute treasure to listen to her. Each version, I feel, suits the environment and acoustics at hand but if she sang another four variants.... would it be any less a luxury of experience? I don't think so. She's very gorgeous in that this isn't just singing the song, she lives it out as a very emotionally enabled actress.

    French Version:
And now I’m all alone again,
Without a friend, without anything to do,
I am not pressed to recover my solitude and my misery.
I wait for night to come,
To invoke him in my memory.
    I walk alone every night,
All the streets belong to me.
All of my thoughts fly to him
And I put my life in his.
    While Paris sleeps at night.
I can make up my story.
My story, is like a fairytale
In the pages of my childhood.
    I close my eyes,
And my prince comes to embrace me,
And I pray that his embrace will never become undone.
With him, I no longer feel the same.
I love the rain, and when we walk together.
Our two shadows, like two enamoured giants,
Get longer at our feet and are reflected in the Seine.
And I know I made everything up.
I know that he will never be at my side.
And in spite of this, I still hope,
That with him, I will write my story.
I love him, but when the night is over,
In the morning, he continues his route,
And the world becomes the same again,
It loses all its colors and the rainbow loses its diadem.
I love him, but I am alone in the world,
All my life, I’ve waited as a shadow.
My story is just an empty shell now,
A foolish dream of love where I had no part to play.
I love him. I love him. I love him,
    Alone in my story.

I hate how people compares her to the younger Lea Salonga when let's face it, both have control over the power of voices, but Lea Salonga in other hands, was more trained due to the fact that she joined Miss Saigon before the 10th anniversary

that's different, the movie was more true to the book, the movie was made to produce real feelings, and make the people see the real feelings of eponine, the anniversary was made to celebrate that the musical has been running for 25 years, it was suposed to be more beautifull in terms of musicality. ANNDDD the girl that played this Eponine also played her in the movie, so I think both are great, different yes, but amazingly beautifull both

I think this is her best performance, 'cause in the movie it wasn't really as good as it is here!

Also the lyrics are different they probably had to cut some phrases out because of the length of the movie. The movie was already 2 and a half hours long. I personally like Samantha's performance in the musical better than on screen partly for the lyrics and partly for the tone/feelings she was able to express with just her voice.

Samantha Barks the best Éponine, in my opinion, but all the others were great too, it's a difficult one!

I much prefer Lea Salonga to Samantha Barks after listening to her makes me realize why I didn't want her in the movie. Just don't know who could've taken her place.

I don't believe they'd include a spoken part if they could help it. But i'm of the same opinion with Harajukukevin, Ms Barks should at least sing the whole song for On my own in the movie like she did in the musical. The emotion you, Laura, probably saw was from her acting and facial. But if you listen to the soundtrack you can feel something is missing. The feeling is richer in the musical. tho its just a feeling.

To be fair to her, she wore a TIGHT corset, and had to sing in cold fake rain (I watch lots of behind the scene footage) :) But I sort of agree with you

She was also wearing Eponine's costume while singing this (this is concert though with mild acting, no rain)

  • @harajukukevin6657
    @harajukukevin6657 11 лет назад

just saying you can covey those emotions through singing more also, not just through speaking. Yeah it was spoken, but I wish it was more song-like. ALL I WANTED WAS FOR EPONINE TO BELT! That's not hard to ask for! I had some issues with the film but overall it was great. This musical is mostly sung through.

Ooops, Sorry but Lea Salonga's version is a lot way better than this. The clarity of Lea's voice is divine. Her emotions were overflowing and the acting wasn't overdone. Her vibrato is amazing. But this is also a great performance from a great singer tho.
