    I get that with expensive items like this, people expect more high-end packaging. I’ve always been of the opinion that as long as it protects the item, I really don’t care. I’d rather my money go more into the item itself than into some fancy packaging, but that’s just me.

    • @thetechgenie7374

      Me to as well. Don't care for the fancy packing, rather costs go into the item itself. I am the type that uses the product and not for display.

    Great review. I gave you a thumbs up. Totally, completely, 100% can relate and agree. I also have a Le Grand and keep it in the box. Even worse, I have a matching leather pouch and that has to stay in it's box too. All that aside, the lighter is what I wanted and eventually it'll get dinged up.

    Good review, sir!
    A few observations:
    1)The point about the gas was spot on!
    2)There's a gap in the market for a good dual flame lighter.
    3) If i may be so bold, try adjusting the soft flame on your lighter, so it comes to a point as one big flame rather than two. I found this to get the best result on my Colibri.
    Keep up the good work!

      The problem with anything jet flame related is the plastic they use and electric ignition. I don’t know why but if a lighter is jet flamed then it has cheap internals. I honestly think DuPont should stay out of this market. If they want this market then outsource. Calling this lighter le grand is a travesty. It makes it seem superior to the ligne 2 when we all know it’s not.

    Loved that you touched on gas for your lighter. I currently use a Maxijet (which has been phenomenal for years) which I’ve always used the black St DuPont fuel cans for. I’ve read the Le Grand lighter calls for the red cans - but I always wondered what the difference was? Any idea? I also have Vector 14x refined fuel I use in some of my cheaper lighters, but it’s always worked great - so perhaps I could just use that? If so, it would be much less expensive! Thanks for the great review! Still tempted by the palladium version!

    Thank you for the review that really helped to talk me out of buying this lighter lol. About the scratch-resistance issue, do you think that if you carry the lighter around in a nice leather case (like the ones sold by St Dupont themselves), would it prevent scratches much better? I have a St Dupont pen with the same type of lacquer that I always carry in a leather pouch from the same brand, and I didn't notice any scratches yet (but I rarely carry it around because, well, I'm afraid of damaging/scratching the pen).
    As of the ping sound, yeah it's one major issue and one of the main reasons why I still haven't pulled the trigger yet. I mean isn't it one of the main things that made their lighters popular and easily recognizable?! I don't want to spend a lot of money on a St Dupont lighter that people around me would mistake for a cheap chinese fake because it doesn't "ping" lol.
    However the double torch/soft flame is very intriguing. Do you know of one that would have this kind of system and can go directly to torch flame (like what you would've wanted) that you can recommend please?

    It is beautiful , and I can appreciate that. However for the price I think this would leave many people wanting more. I would buy it if I had that sort of cash to spend on a lighter simply because it's beautiful . The scratch resistance is a major problem for me , the wind resistance is not a big deal though as this lighter would never leave my home . I just think that with so much money it should be durable and dependable , not just a work of art.

  • @gtrmusic69
    @gtrmusic69 3 года назад +1

    5:30 I like very much that it doesn't have the loud "ping" sound. I have three Dupont and the ones I use the most are the ones that are the most quiet. I have two of these and Ligne 2 silver that makes the most loud ping noise every and it's not attractive. Matter of fact I always open it slowly so the sound doesn't happen. Of the three Dupont I like the Ligne 2 the most, more than the Grands. Very solid performer. By the way if your cotton glove is scratching the lighter you're buying cheap gloves. As to the thickness of the jet flame I love it. So many of those two and three jet flame lighters overheat the cigars. Keep in mind that before jet flames everyone used to light their cigars with soft flame. A single jet flame is perfect for getting more windproof and not over heat your cigar. You can control the heat and how you light the cigar much better.

    but
    Vintage 1960's ronson or zippo.
    The war era ones are sought after as some literally saw and went through combat.... maybe these lighters can withstand sitting under water for years after getting run over by a tank.

    I remember that dancing flame review. I woulda been real ticked off if I paid for that one 😂. I own two S.T. DuPont lighters, a black matte Maxijet and the red version of the DeFi Extreme. I do not have a need for a soft flame on my lighter, when I want to change it up , I use a long match to light a cigar. Nice vid, pretty thorough review, I can tell you didn’t just pick it up and use the product for a few days and then say well that’s it. I hear ya on the on the money, these are expensive, I bought the maxijet for a Black Friday sale, was like $100 below MSRP and I used points from the store I go to on the DeFi Extreme. I think on the fuel, you can gunk up the jets if you don’t use the triple refined fuel, as long as it’s at least triple refined, should be good to use. Some of the lighters I don’t care about, I just use whatever on a $12 junk lighter

    • @michaelbraten736
      @michaelbraten736 4 года назад

      Cigar Rants sometimes I prefer the $12 junk one, it works great, quad flame , has a punch. It’s a Vertigo with the plastic clear tank and some black at the top. I also have a Vector (Lotus)commissioner double flame in chrome, and it was $30, but looks much more expensive , I don’t mind using that now as my everyday , bring it anywhere lighter. If it gets banged up and scratched, well that’s just the patina we’re looking for 😂

    • @1911FanBoi
      @1911FanBoi 3 года назад

      Ligne 2 is very special though. Light flame is how they lit cigars in the past. Can I ask why you need a torch?

    • @michaelbraten736
      @michaelbraten736 3 года назад

      @@1911FanBoi in the past it wasn’t illegal just about everywhere to smoke a cigar inside a building. I do most of my cigar smoking outside. Any wind and a soft flame doesn’t light very well. Torches are more wind resistant. It’s just not practical to use a soft flame lighter on a regular basis for myself.

  • @thetechgenie7374
    @thetechgenie7374 3 года назад

    To me the Ligne 2 lighter Chinese Lacquer Palladium is my favorite as you can just turn the flame adjustment and get two flames that does one larger single flame, or two separate frames. As far as the le grand only one that good is the combine torch and soft flame. The dancing flame barely works and a gimmick at best as not useful for anything.

So once its scratched and not gouged it should be fine to bring back to a mirror scratch free shine. Just need to use the right metal polish. I have had it for over two months and it still works perfectly fine.
      When you first get it, you should prep it. Make sure the rayon or cotton is all the way inside and packed tightly, and make sure the right amount of wick is pulled out. Not too much because the top of the inside of the guard will hit the wick and it will begin to fray immediately. You have to know how much wick to pull out.

      @@AlcoveShadow I do, yes. (brass one too). First it came (well packed, I don't deny that) with a problem with the little "ball bearing" securing the cap down. Mine would not want to click closed and kept on popping open.; They told me it was a question of adjustment so I try every possble ways (even oiling the cap o'ring which solved the issue for ten minutes), trying different variations of tightening and untightening that minuscule screw (it wouldn't stay firm anyway) and after a dozen tries, the thread worn to a point it did not want to screw anymore ---> cap always open, screw as well as ball bearing lost. When you see the amount of thread on that thing you understand it 's not made to be fiddled with very often before just breaking loose. I'm not saying the rest is not well built, but I would never build a "tank" this way. I ordered a Exotac Titan, and I could refer to this thing as a tank rather more than this beautiful but shamely over-fragile work of art. I like the more muted ping or more like a clang it makes. Not as attention seeking as others and not as much mommy issues as other lighters.
    And having muted ping is inevitable when the body isn't open metal. It's lacquered. What do you guys expect? As well as scratches. It's open lacquered finish.
    But protective gloves leaving scratches is an actual objective problem and they should fix that I agree.
    And I wouldn't buy this lighter myself either cuz I can get a Ligne 2 lighter that has a mommy issues ping, and just mute it when I don't want the ping, and enjoy the best of both worlds.

    Just ordered this. Disappointed to hear how easily it scratches. I'll have to baby it I guess ...their website claims their lacquers are super scratch resistant so that's ashame. I also just bought a palladium ligne 2 firehead but need to send it back because the flame is super weak even on highest setting. Seems a $1000 lighter shouldn't have that kind of issue right out of the box.

    I like the video and it’s a good review. Thanks for the content. One thing I like to bring into attention is that it kinda sounded like the lighter owns you vs you owning it. Let me explain. Any object you own (fancy cars, expensive clothing, latest tech gadgets, etc..) you should be able to use without hesitation. Not having to worry about it losing its value or whatever. Sure I wear $375 jeans but that doesn’t mean I don’t get them dirty or take them on a fishing boat. I own the jeans and they don’t own me. I use them without worry. It sounds like you use that lighter and worry about it so it kinda owns you. Just a thought.... also I think that’s why you use your zippo all the time huh? You don’t worry about using it.

      Buy used. I picked up a beautiful one for a good price with the vintage ping. New ones have a fake ping to it. They market the ping now. They didn’t market the ping in the past. It was just a beautiful lighter that made a beautiful sound. Trust me I had the chance to buy an all silver new lighter that you can hear the ping from across the street to finally getting an older piece that has a healthy thud ping. It actually thuds and the ping echoes. It’s not a straight ping.
      I always recommend people go vintage. Growing up as a kid my uncle had one and it sounds like the one I own now. New ones don’t really sound good. It’s too pingy.

    This guy is typical........ 'Nouveau Riche'
    He can light his cigar with a gas lighter (yuk); he can wear his Rolex on the wrong wrist and he can drive a Bentley, BUT, he'll never have any class. That is something that his money won't buy, fortunately.
    He's trying so hard, but his breeding, label showing and high backed leather office chair from Family Bargains, just let him down. We can spot this type, a mile away, usually permeating into the Birmingham green belt or the Leeds brown-field sites.
    Bless him and his cotton socks 🙏
