- Join us as we take a drive in my 2003 Lexus LX470 and I share my experiences, both off-road and on-road with the 100 Series Land Cruiser platform. We will take a look at both what I like and dislike, particularly from the viewpoint of off-road exploring or overlanding.

Is it possible to post your exact wheel and tire combo please. I am very interested in setting up something similar.
No problem: 285/75/r17 on Icon 6 Speed Rims with an OME Heavy lift and Slee diff drop. All I needed was to hammer the pinch weld and use a heat gun to push the liner away and I have zero rubbing and no spacers. This is a 33.8" tire.
@@ForgottenWaypoints I wonder what weight spring? "heavy" on slee It's sort of obscure a little. I am putting a slee rear bumber and will hang the spare there so I need heavy springs as well. Thanks for your great content and format!
@@samprokop, I got my lift from Cruiser Outfitters, OME lists it as "250-400lbs+" on the rear and 250+ on the front (with the HD torsion bars)
Obviously, I don't have all the armor yet, so it's about a 3" lift, and my torsion bars are cranked to the max factory spec (only a pathetic 1.5" of droop).
I anticipate when I get a rear and front bumper, it will sag about 1/2", which will allow me to relieve tension on the torsion bars and gain another 1/2" of flex and ride softness.
I don't anticipate rubbing though, I still think I have plenty of space in the wheel wells.

2002 LX470. 18 months in. 261,000 miles and counting. Love this thing. Daily driver, weekend off-roader. It does it all.

I am looking at one 2004 under $10K with 245K miles on it, how much life left you think I get out of that engine, assuming there no major issues ? do you think I should go for it with that amount of miles?
@Checo1 I bought my 2006 Lx470 in 2018 from a Lexus dealer for $8400 with 243,000 miles. Driving strong but it came with a lot of corrosions at that time... no plan to sell it anytime soon at all... proud to drive it down the road every time. We don't see too many out there😮😅😅😅

This was an excellent video! Thank you for taking the time to break down all the pros and cons. Some of the forums get echo chambered and it’s really hard to get honest feedback on owning a 100 series. I am also a family of 5 and have the same off-road needs and desires you do so I am especially excited about your experience and feedback. I am looking at a few 100 series in SoCal right now and I would love to get your opinion on my options. Keep up the good work.
Daniel Lakhani I guess it depends on how you travel, but I would think family of 5 would be tight. We are a family of 4 and seems a bit tight at times in my LC. I am a really big fan of the LX, just couldn’t find one that drove nice, so ended up with an LC. When I took my LC to my mechanic for an inspection, his first comment was don’t buy it the maintenance costs are too high. 100% agree about the forums (and others) that talk about bullet proof reliability. Yes it’s reliable if you keep up with the maintenance and don’t have a total brake failure do to brake booster mentioned. I am looking at LXs again now and prices are even higher than when I bought my LC last year. If you can wait until early next year, there is some thought prices will come down a bit. @@leenestle OTRAMM is the best, a super long history with Cruisers going back to the 90s. I probably bought my first one because of him, in high school. My LX is the cheapest LC I've ever owned, actually. It wasn't beaten down and that helps. OEM parts by the PO, under warranty at the dealer...I am very thankful for that now.

Thank you for bringing up maintenance. I have an 04 LC. Another thing people skip is trans/center diff/rear diff fluids are recommended every 60k with light usage and 30k with heavier usage. Grease the driveshaft every oil change. Makes a noticeable difference as well. Solid video. Thank you.
Yeah, I need to hit my transmission and do a drain/fill this winter (already have the fluid). I've changed both diffs, just the T-case left.
2006 LX470 178K MILES, stock, original owner - the best vehicle we have owned and still own. Maintained according to schedule with the exception of the timing belt. I ran on borrowed time due to bad memory and replaced it at 168k together with water pump and a new radiator due to developing crack. Have replaced the struts at 120k miles. The engine starts like it is new. I cannot say enough praise about this vehicle!!
Let your brother take care of it for the remaining of its life.. give me the adress to pick it up with the tile on the driver seat. We don't have to meet😅😮😮 and you will be blessed for that my Brother.😂😅
What was the condition of the original belt at 168k miles? Glad to hear it lasted that long, how old was it?
I’m convinced by your expert advice and honesty about availability of parts to go with the 100/LX470. I was hesitant to buy a 470 due to the timing belt, but your video has removed that hesitation! There are some deals out there for the 470 that don’t exist for the 80 & 200! Thank you! I’ve just subscribed!
I went for a 460 due to timing chain. But they are both solid vehicles.
The timing belt is pretty easy on these, you just need the special Crank pulley tool, a torque wrench, etc.

It's good that you brought up that these vehicles are expensive to maintain. I bought my yota 100 last year and since then it's definitely been a money pit. 5 grand in cats and O2 sensors, $1800 timing belt/water pump service, and about to get the front wheel bearings worked on in addition to some scheduled maintenance items.

So I was watching this because my buddy just got a 100. I'm thinking about getting one for my wife. I'm a long-time Toy nut and I've had many, including a triple-locked 80 (keeping that puppy!). I think this talked me into getting one. Maintenance isn't soo bad if you turn your own wrenches, but it hurts if I ever need the dealer. Thanks for the video!
I just got back from the Trifecta, Poison Spider, Golden Spike, and Gold Bar rim...no winching, no lockers, some bumper damage. Do I recommend it and would I do it again? Not until I was triple locked with better protection (bumpers) but the vehicle lightly modded w/Atrac will match the skill of most of us. I was impressed, despite the IFS.
@@ForgottenWaypoints So I just went trailing with the same friend today. I took my lifted T100 on 31's and he made me look like a noob. It's been years since he's been off-road and definitely never in anything as capable as a Landcruiser. I think he's a believer now. His 100 is small lift/All Terrain T/As/LandCruiser suspension swapped with an ARB and it made short work over stuff I struggled with. What a machine! We'll see how it hangs against my triple locked 80 when I get my fuel pump. I'm excited to do the LandCruiser thing again!

Great sound quality. I think we put 25000 miles on our LX470 within the first year of ownership. We've travelled to Texas and Montreal from FL. It's such a great rig to try and keep the miles off of it.

Love it!!! I just got myself a 2004 with 120K miles, same color.. I intend to keep stock suspension and maybe put a bumper to protect.. Mostly want it for Baja California, I think it will do very well there

Great review.. im thinking about getting an older lx 470. Just worried about reliability with engine and transmission etc.. I noticed you had on eddie bauer first ascent pants 🤣 i absolutely love mine. They are so comfortable.
Yup, they are making a lined version now for the winter. I have to look into some.
I’ve had mine since new in 1999. Now 470,000kms. The variable ride height suspension died so we changed to stiffer coils, torsion bars and Konis all round. It has a fixed 2” lift now. It’s a brilliant car, but fuel consumption is atrocious, giving a range of just over 600kms on its 140L tanks. In Australia that’s almost useless for outback touring. Fitting headers didn’t help but it now sounds awesome. Next step is Unichip.
Yeah, the gas mileage is an issue, even in the US. Not for range, but for cost per mile, especially with a roof rack!
I got rid of my 200 series 2017, it was a lot of money, I took it on a lot of trips and outfitted it pretty well. I found myself super annoyed at the range (I know I could have gotten a bigger tank but I was already at the limit for weight). I despised the stereo to a degree I just can't tell you how much it annoyed me. I hated the nav as well, it was notorious for taking a crazy amount of time to wake up. When it was stock, nothing done to it, it was amazing, but once I added roof rack, awnings and other stuff, the handling started to die off, and was weird at small frequency bumps on the freeway at 80mph.
I had a goose gear system with a fridge, and all that, went all over with it, but it isn't the gem a lot of people act as though it is. My raptor got the same fuel economy (6.2) and was arguably better at the chop bumps at high speeds (obviously you would expect this, but the LC was going, I need more stuff). It did take me places that were epic mind you, where others struggled slipping and what not. One run I did, people with modified jeeps were asking "are you hitting?!" Nope. I have to watch my lines more carefully but it is OK. My point to this diatribe is, your rig probably handles the high speed chop better when outfitted, thanks to the torsion bars.
You might be right. I do more crawling than high speed, so I'd prefer a solid axle (a 105 series would have been epic), or coil overs next. I tolerate the torsion bars on my 100. They aren't bad, but not my favorite either.
FYI, the middle seats are adjustable and can recline a good amount for some good rest after a long day for the kiddos.

@@ForgottenWaypoints Yep. Can confirm. Been back seat in my dads 2007 many times and the recline position is definitely adjustable. Night and day difference between that and the 1989 Landcruiser I grew up with. Still prefer the 89 though ;)
@@bogotstogoskiing , agreed! I also noticed that the 3rd row also reclines. I just didn't bother to check because that was so rare in early 2000s vehicles. Kind of a cool touch. The GX is the same way (and I did point that out in the GX review).
I've had many a relaxing lunch break nap in the back seat of my LX. Great feature. Yes, my '86 FJ60 didn't have this feature. I miss that one much though, for other reasons.
My AHC has taking on the Rubicon twice with 300k on the clock, I will rock it until it craps out, works great!

I love my 1999 LC and enjoy working on it despite the cost of the parts. If I did not do the work myself there is no way I could afford ownership of this old yet timeless vehicle. Great video.
I was just under reclamping a CV boot that was leaking, I can't imagine having a dealer fix it, they'd replace the CV and I shudder to imagine the cost.
Parts (in my experience) are on par with repairs for lots of other vehicles. OEM for items can hit you over the head though, that's for sure. Usually, it's worth it - that part may last another 200k miles or 20 years.

Now car has almost 280K on odo... but no major issues that would break a bank... just couple Franklin's here and there... but well worth it... i respect that car a lot and will never get rid or it...

I have a 2001 with 300k on the clock and factory AHC, still going strong, knock on wood:) I did add Old Man Emu medium duty springs to the rear to help with weight!
I'm currently looking at a 2001 with 108,000 miles I just have to hope they'll be willing to pay more than my car is worth.

For the LX470, it's just like the 100 series, you'll just have to deal with AHC.

Yes, it's the exact same vehicle as the 100 series Land cruiser just with more standard options and Lexus cladding. Since they sold more in the US, they are easier to find.
Waow... 30k in 3 years😮😮 I only drive my Silver 2006 Lx470 less than 10k miles in 5 years 243,354 - 251,152 now. From May 2018 to June 2023.. still driving strong.
It was a daily for awhile. I’ve put less miles on it annually recently. Coming up on 180k now for me.

Thanks! I'm running 33.8" (285/75R17) BFG KO2s on Icon 17's. No spacers, just the OME lift and diff drop. Had to pound the pinch weld and mold the plastic back.

That Lexus Link message would drive me INSANE...I had a 2017 Trax and the "Your On Star Is Connected to Limited Services" message made me want to launch off a cliff every morning before driving to work... I have a 2012 GX460 now...it does not have that message :)
Yeah, the message started when they swapped from an analog to digital service, that reminds you just how long ago 2003 was. I guess Lexus would upgrade/disable it for a time, but that window is far past. I thought it'd bother me more than it does, but now it's kind of a joke.
What was funny is when my parents bought a new RX and when my youngest kid went for a ride he said, "Grandpa's RX doesn't have a Lexus Link Error. It's not as good as ours." Lol.
Loved your take on the LX. As a long time driver of Land Cruiser, this is my first "Not Land Cruiser, Land Cruiser" I have owned since I got out of military in 70.
I have owned dozens over the decades. My kids all drive LC's now as do my grandsons. I recently switched from my 80 to a 2009 Gx470. My body says its the best decision I ever made. Thus far, handles like a mountain goat off road in heavy trails, even in stock configuration. Look forward to seeing your Gx next to the LX. I am thinking of picking up a LX as well, as a second ride. Anyway. Good job.
Thanks! While the timing belt was off on the LX, I had the opportunity to take the GX to Moab and the San Juans of Colorado. While we didn't do any major trails, since the GX is a daily all it has is a tire upgrade, we did do Imogene Pass and a few legit runs so I think I have enough material to do the GX justice on both a review of its own and a comparison between the LX and GX.
I've owned the GX about 6-7 months less than the LX and have only done lower control arms as far as maintenance is concerned. So there is that, although it is 5 years newer than the LX and so far 40k less miles...
Excellent video Thank you! As a GX470 owner, I took some offense after the statement about the seat ride height. The GX's seat is not much lower than the 100-series, in fact, they are nearly the same. 09:55 There is nothing "car-like" about that seat position in my opinion. The GX is a bit taller and narrower than the LX too. I agree that the higher center of gravity is not GX's friend, but being narrower than the big brother, makes it a trail beast!!! Seriously contemplating to subscribe to your channel! I'm going to check out your GX footage first though to confirm! :)
I’ve got an 06’ LX w/ 216k and just did a full maintenance on the torsion bars and AHC. Also put an ARB bumper on it and it’s handling it like a champ. This is my favorite rig of all time. Also have an 11’ LX570 for my wife that is stock except I swapped the 20” wheels for LC 18”. These vehicles will take us through the apocalypse.

The Land Cruiser typically doesn't come with AHC, so if you are going to install a lift, it's easier. I feel the LX has superior interior materials (real wood instead of fake and more sound proofing insulation). And outside of that, it's whichever exterior design you like better
@@ForgottenWaypoints All true. I had the same dilemma. Couldn't find an LC I liked, to save my life. Was forced into an LX and did tons of research and test drives prior. This, coming from an FJ60, two FJ40s, and a Montero. Personally, I would now favor an LX, even with AHC - it's extremely useful. Find a good one with factory service (or specialist maintenance and full records). Many LXs are babied, and tend to be cheaper. The interiors are definitely better. Better stock audio. There's more sound deadening and the glass is a bit thicker. AHC is great when it works; mine is flawless at 250k. Things I dislike - the headlights/grill, the side cladding, and that it doesn't say Land Cruiser lol. The rest is a win on the LX. Don't hesitate.
There is one near me with 170k on it for about 10k, seriously contemplating trading my Forester XT in for it if it weren't for gas pricing right now

Thanks! We are still planning it. Real life has been hectic to our filming schedules. In fact, I just did a bunch of maintenance on the LX and had filmed it for DIY vids and the camera was pointed at the wrong spot. Such bad luck and frustrating!

@@iscreamcandytv9642 Beats me-- I looked up the specs- and they're pretty much the same- ONE is like 2 inches wider- 4 inches longer- less leg room in back on one- etc. that type of thing-- other than that- the LX (which stands for LUXURY Crossover compared to GX Grand Crossover) is a bit fancier with more electronics and a little different look on the front- other than those SMALL differences- i can't see a lot of reason to pick ONE over the other-- still checking!! :)
Great Video. Did you change the upper control arms or just the ball joints? Also what are the bushings you have replaced so far?
Upper and lower ball joints are 555. Everything else is original OEM (factory bushings and control arms). I tried to do tie rod ends at the same time, but everyone was sold out
Great review. What I got out of this is that the LX 470 is equivalent to a Honda VFR. It can do everything you ask within reason, and you'll never walk away amazed or disappointed, and while there are certainly better special-purpose vehicles, somehow 20+ years later you're still riding it because it does everything you need.
I have the same color combo in an 05. Bought it with 237K and love it. Not sure if i want to hold on to it or sell it and get an 06/07 bc it has a little more power. Will keep it for a little while though :D
Folks on ih8mud seem to dispute the benefit of the later model's power increase. They have other benefits over the first ones, but you already have those. If you love it, dont sell for marginal benefit!
This is a great video and summary - thanks for sharing! Am I right to assume that any aftermarket lift/suspension system requires you to disable AHC? And then does that mean you had to pull out all of the components when the new lift went in? Does this create any issues with the electrical system?
You have to pull out the shocks and springs. The rest can stay, I've only pulled out about half of it because Toyota didn't make it easy.
There is a plug under the dash to a module that runs the display on the dash. Pull it and the AHC display goes away as if it wasn't there. Pretty cool actually. No codes or anything. Cruiser Outfitters sells the coin slot that goes in the place of the switch, so I even swapped that out. (You can see this in my video, the switch used to be below the ash tray, where I mounted my Ham radio. It's gone now.

The front torsion bars do suck compared to the flex I get out of my 200, but once you slap lockers in the LX it will go anywhere!

I have a question. Did you let the computer do its thing by itself without touching anything? From my understanding i thought you have to let the computer build up traction slowly. Which may take awhile. All you have to do is steer straight maybe. I dont know. Correct me if im wrong. I loved the video. Glad you were able to get out. I love toyotas
No, atrac just measures slip, when a wheel slips it pulses the brakes to swap torque wheel speed between sides. The trick is to keep the throttle steady, if you let off...you lose momentum. If you give it more, it can slip more and then pulse more, losing momentum again. Just enough throttle for it to activate and keep it constant is what I find works best. It's somewhat of a skill actually.
You might want to get a BT45-TOY instead of that cassette adapter. You get perfectly clear audio as loud as those marc levinsons will blast
I want too, they are sold out! Once they are in stock, I'll pull the trigger. I need to refoam or replace the speakers, my sound is awful.
Is there a particular year you recommend for a GX470? I'm looking to do some weekend 4 wheeling with my kid and thought it looked like a good choice. Would you prefer a 4 Runner or an GX470.
GX470 for me, unless I could find a V8 4Runner in leather for a similar price. As for year, whatever you can afford that's in the best shape. The early ones had some issues with corrosion of the rear AC lines, but that's about it.
Hello, excellent video, I have a 2002 lx470 with the ahc system deactivated, I have installed the OME rear suspension, but in the front I have only adjusted the torsion bars and I am not satisfied with the appearance because I see it still very low from the front, What is the way you recommend to raise the front part at least 2" more. Thank you and congratulaciones.
It took me 3-4 tries to index the preload enough to get the lift I needed. In fact, a few months ago I dialed the front back about 1/2-1" to get more front flex (I had it raised to high). But if you don't have enough preload on the t-bars, you'll run out of adjustment before you get to your desired height.

I'm in the process of getting a Toyota Land Cruiser. I'd like to do some off-roading, and i feel the 4Runner might be to small to sleep in (less comfortable anyway). Would you recommend a late 100 over an early 200? I'm in Florida, and once i have my off-road legs under me, i'd like to take some trips up to Utah, Arizona & Colorado for some off-road trails.
If I had the funds, I'd go for a 200. The size advantage of the 100 is negated by the torsion bars, IMO. I'd prefer the coils on the 200.
That's me though. It's really personal preference and what you can afford.
I just sold my 2001 LX470 with 274K miles. It ran great, but had a crack windshield and needed body work around the windshield due to rust. One thing to be aware of with LX470s is that the ignition lock cylinder barrel rod will break. Mine broke around 273K mark. Your car is dead unless you know how to fix it.
That's one of the preventative jobs I want to do before making a "buyers guide". The windshield replacement seems a pain, being a riveted windshield.

Nice Rig! Can you talk a little about the tire/wheel package? Exact size, offset, etc. Did you have to trim or are you using spacers? Any rub?
No spacers with the icon rims, but I did need to smash the pinch welds (I didn't do the passenger side good enough, so I need to remove the liner and do it again. I can't remember the metric tire size, I'll go pull that in the morning

@@billayuba , Just went out and checked, tires are 285/75r17 and with the OME heavy lift. With no armor/bumpers, I was able to achieve the required front-to-rear rake and the minimum articulation. But barely. This is why I mentioned in the vid I feel my lift and tire setup is about as extreme as you can go without serious modifications or being out of spec. (Did I mention I did the diff drop and the lower control arm reinforcement brackets too?)
I think my articulation will be better when I put weight on the rear (rear bumper). The springs will sag some and I'll be able to lower the torsion bars in response to meet the rake, which should give me back some droop.

Enjoyed the gx video and was scanning through this one for an mpg quote for comparison. What do you get in this LX compared to the GX's 14-15mpg?
I haven't calculated the numbers yet, but when both were stock (no lift), I was getting roughly 1, maybe 2 more MPG in the GX. And that seems to be inline with the EPA (12 city, 16 highway, 13 combined).
That said, I went to San Rafael Swell and followed a Jeep JL with a roof top tent (only doing 65mph) and I got nearly 19mpg with a lift and 34" tires. I was stoked.
Did the same route a few weeks later at 80mph and got about 13-14!

With a lift, tires and bumpers, it's possible. I don't think I will build mine to that spec though unless I sell the cruiser!

You mentioned you're 6'2 and I was curious does your seat go back any further than how you have it setup in the video?
Yes. I like to sit close and upright. Older BMWs and their non-adjustable seats got me stuck on that and I kept the habit. There is quite a bit of adjustment except down....I have it bottomed. It will go up quite a bit if you are a shorter driver or prefer to sit higher.

Deffo agree unless you're rock climbing, keep the ahc. I think it's beautifully comfortable, and a better option for use on highway (set it low) and off road (set it high) for 95% of us overlanders.
The second and third rows are manually adjustable for recline...

How is the ride when you’re driving around unladen with the heavy spring kit?
I'm happy with it, I know meant who don't like it though. It is more firm and truck like, but I was never a fan of "floaty". I keep my AHC on sport on both the LX (when it had it) and the GX.
Have you owned a Discovery 2? If so, how does the drive feel compared to the Disco? Beyond the windows, I guess I'm just going to miss the Land Rover feeling of driving mine.
I have a Disco 2 in my garage right now. In fact, I have a review on my channel.
The biggest thing is size. The LX is like a Range Rover. It's whisper quiet. Seats are comfortable. Arm room. Lots of arm room! Seating position is high, but the Disco viewing angles are still superior. The Discovery 2 is like a refined Jeep TJ because of the 100" wheelbase. It can dart through traffic, it FEELS and drives small.
The LX is refined. The independent suspension soaks up the pavement. It's quiet. It's larger on and off the trail.
Both are fun to drive. The LX obviously has more power, but off road the Disco with a lower geared transfer case shines well. You can modulate the throttle better, I feel, on the D2 and the LX takes more skill due to the IFS (lack of flex) and how big it is.
Honestly, the LX is a better "overland platform" from a quality, noise/vibration/harshness and comfort standpoint.
That's not a knock on the D2, the LX was meant to compete with an L322 Range Rover and exceed an LR3, not a Series II Disco.

I also have an '03 LX. I made a post on Mud about installing Ram Balls around the nav unit bezel. forum.ih8mud.com/threads/tablet-phone-ham-radio-mount-solution-for-03-lx-w-nav.1218843/ for me it has been a great solution. The tablet brings in modern mapping and everything is very secure. I also recommend the bt45toy bluetooth add-on. You can eliminate the tape deck solution.
What wheels are you running, and do you have spacers?
The Ram mount idea is slick. I've toyed with the BT45 bluetooth, but haven't pulled the trigger yet.
The wheels are Icon 17"s, no spacers required. I had to do the pinch weld and heat the plastic liner back, but that's it (well, other than the lift and t-bar crank of course.

Yes sir top of the line I bought a Toyota Land Cruiser for made in a tourney for 10,500 it was a 1997 4.5 l fj80 inline 6 put over three hundred and eighty-five thousand miles on it no trouble bulletproof traded it in and bought a Dodge 3500 Cummins turbo diesel inline 6 if I could do it over again I would have kept a Toyota I would have more money in the bank and the Land Cruiser was still be on the road

@@bigwavedave2550 , yeah, I went non VVT because the '08 I was going to look at sold, and they said this '03 was in the shop (trade in) and not listed yet. I said I'd buy it. To me, the extra HP isn't as big of a deal as the 5-speed auto and strong front diff. I'm not sure how much harder it is to do the timing belt yet, we will find out when I dig into the GX!! @@ForgottenWaypoints Ha, ok that makes total sense. Nice to have first dibs on something like this. I would assume the TB service is the same except for maybe the initial TDC setting and making sure the cams don't move, but that's what timing marks are for. I don't have experience with Toyota's yet but from what I've seen on YT the job looks to be easier access than the Honda V6's TB's replacements I've done 😅. Thanks for the response!

If you love AHC, I'd look into getting it working. Uzj100 group on Facebook and ih8mud is a great resource to DIY fix your AHC.
If you don't want to bother, OME is a popular route, though many don't like the shocks and swap them out for ironman or even OEM.
I'm all OME, shocks and all.
Have you done the timing belt and related components yet?
Yes sir. It was kind of tough job (took two of us to get the cams lined up), but it's done and purring like a kitten.

@@joshuae6405 I'm a 5spd and non-vvt. I have VVT in my GX and it does feel peppier, but if I had a choice, I get non VVT everytime, cheaper to maintain and easier to work on. But the 5-spd is nice, you also get the 4-pinion front diff, so lots of nice upgrades 03+.
@@joshuae6405 , did I mention my LX had 270? That's a mistake, I must have grabbed the VVT number. The LX is non VVT, the GX is VVT.
