Shovelhead Engine - Starter Solenoid Repair

- Today we will be looking at the Starter solenoid on this AMF Lowrider that seems to be exhibiting an issue. A simple test as demonstrated has localized the issue to the solenoid specifically. The click with no action was the outlaying symptom. checking that during the click the starter gets no voltage makes the determination that the solenoid, not the starter is our issue.
After disconnecting the battery, and protecting the Aluminum the connections to the solenoid, then the solenoid is removed along with its spacer. This is followed by disassembly of the unit. As disassembled we see the contacts and determine service-ablility. A brass brush cleans up these surfaces. A rebuilt kit would be used if these were beyond service. With the old grease removed new grease is applied where appropriate. Part 1028348 from Jpcycle was used to replace my old chrome cover but it didn't fit, so i'm returning it.
Everything is reassembled with a sealant at the base of the studs to keep water out. and the solenoid reinstalled; Battery reconnected. Testing determines everything is working good with this easy and cheap repair.

Top notch 👍
Thank you.
didn't you forget the lock washer on the solenoid stud
every so often my starter will just keep running till I disconnect my battery.....would that be a selenoid problem? or maybe a relay?
Great content. I recently acquired a 1969 electraglide from my father in law. When I press the start button, sometimes the start will click sometimes it wont. If I press starter button in and hold, eventually it will try to turn over. Starter works intermittently while pressing the button. Should I do the solenoid repair as you have done. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
It seems to point to the solenoid, its worth checking.
It happened to me that I saw that it was broken where the key is located, I don't know, now the automatic doesn't work, could that be it?

I have a similar problem that I am struggling getting solved. I only get one click and it seem to come from the starter relay. If I tap the relay while pressing the starter button it generally engage. When I replace the relay it works for a couple of weeks/months but then the issue resurfaces. really bugs me and I dont know what/how to resolve this :( ('81 FLHC)
Strange. Have you tested these relays outside the bike to rule them out as an issue.
@@delorean1 Cant fault the relays - but seem to point to just that
15:17 15:17 check the ground between the battery solenoid and the starter battery is mounted in rubber it will not ground efficiently running ground wire from your battery ground to your starter ground
The Amf tool part number is 2X4X1FT 😂
its 8675309
The terrible chrome cover is not different from any aftermarket supplier, I've been fixing old Harleys for 30+ years, and if anything, it seems like the stuff they sell is getting worse. To be fair though, the 9 year old Chinese kid that built that cover has never been anywhere even remotely close to a real Harley. The people that sell this stuff are not the ones who have to install it, and when you go to send it back, the postage and hassle isn't worth the trouble, so they win. Just about anything I ever get has somehow had to be modified to get it to work, and if not, it becomes part of my expensive shiny stuff in my garbage can.
It happened to me that I saw that it was broken where the key is located, I don't know, now the automatic doesn't work, could that be it?
I don’t know what you are trying to say.
