What do you think of someday reviewing, or even resuming playing, puzzle parks or otherwise cool scenarios, like when you streamed Quantum's Edge, or other hard custom scenarios? I'm thinking stuff like this one grid park made for Heartline Twisters, played by a Korean streamer called Funzinnu. iirc
Could you make a video about the premade rollercoaster designs? Which one is the most expensive, which the cheapest, which one has best value for the money, which one uses the most space, ..
You most likely know this but in OpenRCT2 you can make the boat tracks invisible using the tile inspector. It's pretty handy if you want your guests to follow a designed path but don't want to actually see the tracks themselves
Didn't they add an invisible track colour to OpenRCT2 a while ago? You can just paint the entire track invisible instead of tile inspecting each track piece separately.
As long as you have an entertainer in the vicinity they can queue forever, vertical limits are ignored and it seems to go *through the ground.* The less guests you have on paths the better anyways; as when there are too many guests in one spot they whine about it being crowded.
I appreciate you going over all the conditions that keep boats from being able to get back to the station. I’ve had a lot of trouble with free-roaming boat hires in RCT Classic using designs that used to run flawlessly in RCT 1 when I was a kid.
Best way is to not crowd the exit side of the station platform. Make sure all they can do is turn into it, don't give them any other direction to turn. Also I find adding a piece of small turn track to the exit side makes it WAY easier for guests to navigate towards it. It makes sure the boats don't get into a traffic jam trying to enter the platform. But it looks ugly unless you're hiding the track piece with tile inspector on ORCT2
Covered boats or not, an amusement park would be taking their insurance premiums in their own hands with guests climbing in and out of boats in the rain! Then again, this is RollerCoaster Tycoon, where safety standards are a little different…
I came here to comment this. The throughput of course will almost never be as high as with a complete circuit but it looks so much better. Just give them a reasonably small area and block any area you don't want with errant track pieces. Also, you can guide them PART of the way - they will exit incomplete track and enter free roam. If you start them closer to the station that they need to go back to, they will often roam for less time.
I enjoy putting four bumper boat hires in a square, creating a "bumper cars" ride on the water. I also enjoy creating large swimming areas, and using a graphics mod that transforms the boat hire into swimmers. You can make the entrances and exits invisible, and with cheats give them plenty of "boats." Swan boats are great to go around scenic areas, like around a castle "moat."
I'm sure with OpenRCT2's enhancements, you could make a man-made pool small enough where the guests wouldn't get stuck. My only question is "Why didn't I think of this?!?"
Marcel, I’ve been binging all your videos for 2 weeks now. I sleep with your videos in the background, there is not a day that goes by without me hearing ’Hello everyone’. I may be addicted. And I haven’t even played OpenRCT that much yet
The vision of a demiurge-like entity uploading videos about our reality on a higher plane version of youtube always returns to me every time I get a notification from this channel.
omg, I've beein waiting for this video for so long... And 11:55 made it completely worth it! Not just that bit, of course. I've learned so much that I wondered about for years!
My tip to avoid boats from getting stuck is to avoid dead-ends, even if they are very small. Most of the time, building the entrance and exist paths can create those dead-ends, for example at 2:48. I use scenery or terrain to prevent that. Still, there was a bug in the original where boats could get stuck slighty off to the side when trying to enter the station. So that didn't help!
I used to think I always needed track as a kid, then I realized I didn't and stopped doing that. Now knowing they might get stuck, I always build track, because whilst I'd love to let them roam free, if you get stuck, you should have the responsibility of getting back home.
in openrct2 you can download a version of the boat hire that makes the boats invisible and the guests look like they're swimming in a pool which is super fun to use
I really like how boat hires look, so despite their badness, I've been building them in my recent playthroughs. I've had a decent amount of success building them on the edge of the park facing into the ocean, and then using sufficient scenery that they can't actually go towards the park. This means they always go out of bounds into open water, and thus always have a clear shot towards the exit. Nearly foolproof! Of course, the downside is that you can only do this in parks like the Pier or Whispering Cliffs.
I sincerely hope the pathfinding for the 'freeroam mode' of the boats gets further tweaked and enhanced in the future - I found a small mod awhile ago that lets you (ironically enough) turn the boat hire into a swimming pool entrance/exit for guests to jump in and swim in a pond/lake/man-made pool.
2:40 : So these 40 guests only like the theme park because of the boats and want to travel all the way through Rollercoaster Tycoon land just to try the boat hire?
The boat hire was always the first ride I would build in RCT. It was cheap and always thought it was a good starting ride and always tried to build them under my coasters for excitement boosts.
Every couple of years I think to myself "You know, I'm going to try to make a free-roaming Boat Hire work. Just for fun." It never works. And it's never fun.
5:52 And surely he'll say something about how the unbreakdownability means you can use them to drown guests... No? Huh. A lot of restraint from Marcel today. 11:55 Ah. There it is.
I feel like the Jet Skis are the only one I can build, not have a huge or escapable area, and they won't all get stuck on each other. The guests are insanely dumb lol. I actually first used them in a slightly expanded water area on a hard level in 2 (I wasn't ready for hard yet then) where you added a seaworld inspired park to your own and had to make a purchased pathway there. I really got to go crazy on theming a swan boat one with some tunnels and indoor section one of these days, it's like one of the few things I for some reason haven't really done.
What you don't know is that this video was being worked on for months. The reaosn why it took so long to be uploaded was because Marcel Vos got on a boat hire to get first hand experience and got lost for 3 months.
I'll never forget how, when playing RCT1 my brother showed me how to strand a boat in orbit above your park...I thin proceeded to name a guest after him, strand him in a boat and leave him there for hours while I did silly things. Good times
I’m currently watching this stuck in my boat at the exit of the ride… I swear this guy blocking the station better move or else I’m going to storm out of this park!
Been hooked on RCT content for the past few months. And by RCT content, I mean almost exclusively your content. I guess I'll install the original again.
Fun fact, this ride has the exact same issue with guests being stuck in any other theme park game that allows for that, even in Parkitect they tend to get stuck and if there is one stuck in a small corridor of water, another boat tends to just ram it deeper into it 🤣🤣
What I like to do with boat rides is use Open RCT2's tile inspector to make the tracks invisible so I can get a boat ride that looks good without jamming.
There arent. He's using cheats in openrct2 that allow you to change the "mode" of your ride. For example he changed the mode of the boat hire to be that of a looping Rollercoaster, which allows you to access all the pieces available on that coaster such as sloped hills, then he used tile inspector to hide all of the now coaster track pieces, giving it the illusion of a jet ski on water jumping off a ramp. If you notice, the jetski doesn't tilt up when going off the ramp, because there's no sprite made for it to show it going upward since the ride is a flat ride only
2:11 Wait, can they actually exit the park, or is there some trick I'm missing here? Edit: Never mind, you discuss this later in the video. Leaving the comment up for engagement purposes.
4:15 Citation needed. Are the jetskis really powered? Or do they move faster through some other enigmatic property that can only be understood within the lore of RollerCoaster Tycoon? The world may never know. On a more serious note; What happens when the boat hire breaks down? Do all the boats stop? If only they spun rapidly and exploded.
Has there been a deep dive into exactly how pathfinding works for basic paths? I saw a recentish video where a 4 wide path only had slot 1 and 3 used...until you placed the rollercoaster than it was all slot 1. Weird.
I will admit, I have a big preference for rides that can't break down, in the same way I do for the food stalls that don't produce litter. If it's one less thing for my staff to worry about, it's one less thing for my mind to have to juggle.
