    ABOUT ME:
    My name is Mengy and this is my motovlog channel, Moto Mengy. I plan to upload a Goldwing motovlog every Sunday. I ride a 2018 Honda Goldwing DCT Tour but I rode Harley Davidson's for 25+ years before. I'm motovlogging with a GoPro Hero 8 Black mounted to a Bell Mag 9 open face helmet, no external mic! To me riding is wind therapy.
    My goal for the channel is to motovlog Pennsylvania country roads while also motovlog exploring around America. I'll also talk about biker topics and such, probably test ride a few other motorcycles, and will definitely get lost and accidentally wind up on unpaved roads along the way.

    Nice video. I liked your #1 con, GPS. I have a 21' Road Glide Limited and My brother has 22' Goldwing. We are always competing which GPS is worse. The Harley GPS looks good and has different options as scenic, twisty and such but the routes it takes you on are not always the greatest and it locks up alot also. At least the Honda GPS reroutes sometimes with road construction and traffic. We ride alot together and we run both GPS's and on a trip we use directions from both. HAHA.

    • @MotoMengy
      @MotoMengy  Год назад +1

      Thanks! My brother has an HD and we run our GPS's at the same time too. The HD unit always searches better, seems to pick better routes, and is just easier to read.

    Good review and my thoughts would be about the same except if I could ask them to change one thing that would be the navigation and interface controlling it. I have gotten used to using carplay so it doesn't bother me much but places where you don't have internet can be a pain. Was recently in PA and rode on some great roads. I feel every road we rode on made some beautiful memories. It made me appreciate so much more all you show us around. PA 666 was the highlight of our trip. I am planning on coming down again. Maybe we should connect and ride together.

      Everyone I talk to who has the Traxxion suspension upgrade raves about it. It sounds like its money well spent, but sadly I'm just very happy with the stock suspension. When my shocks wear out though I might spend the money on Traxxion to replace it.

    Great review! I have the Ultimate seat and its an awesome upgrade. It not only has the heated seat function but it plugs into the bike just like the stock seat so it uses the bike's on board heating controls. AND it puts out significantly more heat than the stock seat. I highly recommend the Ultimate seat.

    As a fellow 2018 Goldwing Tour owner I fully agree and appreciate all of your pro's. I have an additional or alternate pro, and that would be the brakes. The brakes on the GL1800 are better than any other bike I have ridden. On the con side, I have become used to the navigation. I agree that it could be better, but I have become used to it. My #1 con is related to the phone function. When a call (incoming or outgoing) is in progress the infotainment screen stays in phone mode. A better option would be to stay on the screen that the rider had chosen and have a "call in progress" icon. The other con related to the phone is the contact list. When downloaded, the name of the contact should be what the rider sees when a call is in progress. Instead of the contact name the rider sees the contact number. Two very minor gripes, but they are things I wish Honda would correct. Still loving my Wing after almost 30K miles. On the reliability side, "not so much". I recently spent almost $2,000 to repair a coolant leak. The dealer initially charged $525 to replace the water pump gasket (which only temporarily stopped the coolant leak). The dealer then charged an additional $1475 to replace the water pump. Had I purchased the optional 5 year warranty the warranty would have paid for itself.

      Wow, you had an actual repair done to your Goldwing? I haven't heard of many owners needing servicing like that. I'm almost at 30K miles now, if I have any issues I'll make a video detailing it out. 😉

    Agree with your assessments. Re: GPS. Can’t imagine why they would do anything differently than on their automobiles with a very long history of successful Accords and Civics. My ultra blue 22 DCT Tour airbag I just purchased a few weeks ago, is my 3rd Wing. Absolutely smitten with it. Traxxion has a fix for that front storage door. Check that out. I knew I wouldn’t be getting a storage pocket and discovered I didn’t need one. The zippered packet on the back of my back support has more than enough. When I’m outta sight that pocket gets unsnapped and it goes into the top trunk. A left side mounted Gold Strike phone holder w/wireless charger does the trick. I had my dealer install a number of their high lumen visibility Gold Strike and Pathfinder light kits to be seen. Talk about brilliance. Love it Mengy. So cool are LED lights. The backlit handlebar switches, console and this amazing automotive decibel level horn are details that never get talked about. Who does this. BMW’s got the horn but not the backlit. The ability to jettison off-the-line with torque at low rpm is just impressive. By-byo! The appearance of the Wing is another element I really enjoy. To me it’s the Lexus of motorcycles. The 21+ trunks received enlargement and happy about that. The PPG paint was supposed to be an improvement over previous generations. I keep that in mind as I go about my the care and upkeep. FWIW, Corbin offers the Fire and Ice with it’s heated and cooled options or not at all. Caliente has them on both his 16 and 21. Lastly. Check out Crusieman’s Garage and his initial review of the Indian Pursuit. He’ll be reporting more when he gets it up and running. You may not be happy where Indian decided to locate it’s battery. Polaris is a good performance based company. The Indian is loved by it’s owners but it’s still evolving. By the time your ready it might be just perfect. Unless the maniacal Feds/ EPA has their way. Good stuff Mengy. You brought it again from the great state of Pa. Ride safe and often.

    Great Review. Regarding the cubby not opening very well. I placed a small round rubber or plastic button pad used on cabinets to stop them when closing and banging hard to provide some opening pressure on the door. This causes it to require slightly more pressure to close it but the minute you press the release button it pops open. Regarding the seat, my buddy and I went down to Redding California and had Russell Day Long seats custom made for us, retaining all the heating elements and for the two of us this is the best thing we ever did on the wing. Last thing I will mention is Centramatic wheel balancers. They work and I highly recommend them.

    I think its funny as heck how you compare it to a Harley a few times. I have never owned a Harley but rode a few in my time. And I fully agree with you. I could never own one because every Harley I ever rode I never was comfortable. It's all personal preference. To me there is no better bike then a wing. Mine is a 2015 with 19 thousand miles. I bought it in April 2022 with 12 thousand on the clock. Good video, ride safe.

      The majority of my motorcycle experience is with Harleys so it's hard for me not to compare other bikes to them. I still love Harleys, but I've had my eyes opened to what else is out there now. Mine is 2019 DCT… 32,000 miles so far no issues mechanically! I agree with all your points. I NEVER have used the stock gps as I use CarPlay (Apple) which works perfectly. I always ride in Sport Mode and paddle shift (except on rough roads which cause my wrist to over-work the sensitive throttle - switch to Econ Mode until smooth again)…. I installed Remus exhaust which accentuates the sort of Porsche growl when I accelerate hard. Love the sound of the Remus!

    • @MotoMengy

      I didn't use Sport mode much at first but over the years I find myself using it much more often now. It's too twitchy for me to use it full time, although your 2019 has the improved throttle mapping so it's probably a lot nicer in Sport mode.

    Coming into this late. Mine is a 2018 white DCT Tour that I put 42k miles on so far, and it is the only bike out there that could top my old K1600GTL. Your pros and cons are right on, although I think you had to stretch a bit to find the cons:). I have some paint scratches and blemishes I would like to fix if I knew how. I went aftermarket like a Klockwerks windshield and a Corbin seat, which sits me 2” further back and puts me in a slightly forward lean like a sport touring bike, which is what I was after to fit my 6’5” self. Also have highway pegs. I use apple CarPlay for Nav, otherwise I would have a Garmin Zumo on the handlebars. Aftermarket upgrade plans this year include a BT-Moto flash tune they just came out with, and a pair of Denali auxiliary lights to add to the Pathfinder LED fog and side marker lights.

    Great video and great review. While I agree that the GPS mostly sucks, I have to consider that it's all new to Honda since it took them so long to even incorporate the GPS and Bluetooth into the Goldwing, And I have high hopes that they will at some point get it right. I've worked around the contrast thing by switching it to black and white mode while going through the twisties etc. It makes it so much better to see the roads, and I can switch it back when I get back on the regular roads... But yea... it's OK, but it sucks.I wish they would make it more customizable and / or add stuff like a digital speedometer, Parking Brake indicator, etc. in their updates. A touchscreen would be mice too. The helmet lock sucks too. The seam in my seat split and I checked if it was covered under warranty from Honda. Honda informed me that my warranty had recently expired, and they replaced it anyway. This isn't the first time that Honda stepped up for me either. So here the thing... Considering the AWESOME-ness of this bike, the power, agility, and the exceptional customer service, It's hard for me to not overlook their first attempt at GPS. Thanks for the channel & Ride Safe.

    I don't mind the GPS but wish it was a touch screen like the Harley and other bikes. I do own a TomTom Rider that is mounted on my Triumph, but even those are not perfect. I could put a mount for it on my Goldwing but I get on with the factory one good enough that I probably never will. I really like the CarPlay on the Goldwing, it works so much better than it does on the Harley. The WHIMS module that Harley has is rather buggy and got the best of my temper more than once. With the windshield I put on my Street Glide my wife was better protected than she is on my Wing. On the other hand I find the stock Goldwing shield perfect for me as it is. I will probably change it down the road to the one you bought to improve her comfort on the back. I still don't mind the seat but I now notice on a long day I do start to get sore. It is a weird kind of sore though, not hot spots like on other seats. It is kind of a general discomfort all over making me think that is might be a tad soft. Either way it is not bad enough that I will be in any rush to change it out. I would hate to add up what I have spent on seats for Harleys in the past. As others have found you have to be extremely careful when cleaning and touching the paint/plastics as well as the clear cover over the dash. Both are extremely soft and easy to mark. Mine being a 22 model I have the larger tox box/trunk and I easily fit in two modular helmets with coms as well as gloves, snacks, drinks and more. It was wise of them to make the change in 21, it shows that they did hear complaints about space. I was curious about trying a DCT but could not, mine is the 6 speed. It shifts smooth as silk in all gears except for the shift from first to second which is clunky. That seems to be common in many of the bikes I have owned and is only on the upshift. Like you I think I am going to have this bike for a very long time, it may not have the personality of the V twin Harleys, but it is the best all around bike I have ever had. Any of the dislikes are just minor and not an issue.

    I own a detailing shop. Those scratches can buff out, and wax will hide whatever it doesn't. Nice review. All those miles with no rider back rest and highway pegs? They will up the comfort factor for you by a LOT and let you shift around a little on that seat. My wife hated that back seat. Mine was perfect for the time I owned it and I kind of miss the really smooth, quiet ride. I do not miss the lack of storage, unsnapping of a ton of plastic to change an air filter, or waiting for the dreaded 5 snowflake error message to pop up for DCT lock up and no start condition. I think if I was to do it again, I’d go with a 6 speed manual. But I truly believe I’m set for now and done buying bikes! Ride safe, Mengy 👍

    I have a few different bikes and have a caveat on the DCT version of this bike. I actually love it for long rides and 2 up, but when I come to a stop I want that clutch... I miss it every time. If they made the DCT version with a clutch that you could use or not use, that would be perfect. I actually added the foot shifter as I want a way to get the bike into Neutral without using my thumb, I actually had minor rocket take offs damaging the bike and throwing me, trying to get my thumb on the N button. I hate that setup. For 2 up riding no bike beats the GW in smoothness and passenger comfort. The seating position is too forward for me at 5'11 and I find myself sitting on my "stuff" after a while, having to stand up and try to readjust things. For me I would like it tilted backwards a bit.
    I actually have the Traxx suspension as well... I would agree with your assessment that the factory is way more plush. The Traxx adds some stiffness to the overall ride but other than that I cannot really tell the difference. It's an expensive upgrade. If you ride in sports mode and like to do the twisties... then you should probably upgrade to Traxx but if you're just out for rides with the wife, keep the stock suspension.
    Regards...

    My 18 GW isn’t perfectly balanced. If I take my hands off the handlebars, it wants to veer left a little; means theres slightly more weight on the left side. After hours of riding, theres some fatigue from constant (though lite) pressure on one side. I’ve gotten used to the horn location coupled with passing/bright light switch; I posture my left hand when I anticipate a driver coming into my lane or doing something stupid. I do wish the horn button had backlighting for night time. If they do, maybe mine has just never worked. I added a backrest. It helped. Also bought a silicone seat cushion. The BMW felt light and nimble on the road, engine purred nicely, but the Goldwing was more comfortable on long trips, better gas mileage on regular instead of premium gas, and tracked better in curves, poor weather (wind and rain). The BMW felt top heavy at slow speeds and walking it. Goldwing has lower center of gravity and a better reverse mode too. Although similar in weight, Goldwing was easy to put up on its center stand, not so much with the BMW. I believe maintenance costs for BMW were higher than the Goldwing too. I don't see many Goldwings in the blue either. I often wonder why that is because its a great color!

  • @troublingleaf
    @troublingleaf Месяц назад +1

    Ive always liked the goldwing, but i doubt I'd ever want one of my own... It's biggest downfall? It's a honda, honda make engines to last, but to do that they make tame engines, they take a lot of the fun out of them... my personal experience of all my past hondas is that they're mechanically sound, but electronically they're a ticking time bomb. If I ever do find myself getting another honda (unlikely) the first thing on my list will be a full rewire.

    • @MotoMengy
      @MotoMengy  Месяц назад

      A full rewire on a modern Goldwing would be a nightmare! I know I personally am not capable of something like that. 😬

    • @troublingleaf
      @troublingleaf Месяц назад

      @@MotoMengy agreed on that, it would not be easy, and it would be a very costly task to pay someone to take on the job... But my luck with Honda has been as good as I'd imagine a romantic night in with the lady in room 237 being, i.e the lady in the bath, from the shining!

    Coming off Harleys and the last 10 years on a Victory Cross County... I was tossed up between the Pursuit and Goldwing, I've decided to go with the Wing. Mainly because I want to get off the "customization-upgrade train"....I feel like the Wing is ready to go out of the box(especially the one I'm going to buy, which has an Ultimate Seat and Corbin wide bags already installed). After I buy, it needs nothing, I can ride it and only have to get the wrenches out for regular maintenance. I feel like the Pursuit might coax me back into the bad habit of upgrading....you know, expensive stuff like exhaust, stage kits, bars, custom boards etc. etc. etc.... No thanks

      @MotoMengy  11 месяцев назад +1

      I would have one suggestion for a possible mod to your new Wing: if you are 5'8" or less then the Helibar blocks to put the grips back a little bit make a TON of difference. The stock bars were a bit too forward for me, but the Helibar blocks made it absolutely perfectly comfortable. Of course if the stock bars don't bother you then you are good to go, congrats! 😎

    Have you really never heard about Corbin ? Strange. The number 1 in the world in after market seats. Heated and cooled if you want. I live in Belgium, Europe, Corbin is in the US, but I know Corbin almost my entire life (57 now).

    • @MotoMengy
      @MotoMengy  Год назад

      Most people do this, but the major downside is when you lose cel reception you lose your map. GPS units don't have this issue, and I often ride out in the middle of nowhere without reception. For people who always ride in developed areas its certainly a great option though!

      I have a '16 Toyota Camry and it is really bad as well. I also have an '17 Harley Road glide special and it sucks as well. I have heard BMW riders complain about theirs too. I just use google maps in my phone. It works better than any of these others. I use ear plugs with speakers and just listen to turn by turn directions and music through my phone.
      I also own an '14 Road king and bought a tour pack for it just for trips and to be honest that's really all I need or want. I will probably never buy another optioned out bike again.
