I'm glad I found this video because this med was recently prescribed by a dermatologist. I asked her and the resident about the side effects, and they only mentioned potassium, low blood pressure, and more frequent going to the bathroom. I researched the med but obviously didn't do enough. Based on your video, I may not take it. I've ordered a hair analysis (will have a consultation with another doctor) and will see what the results show.
Luckily it's working for me (I don't use Monoxidil) The side effects I experienced (I'm 50) are very dry skin and hair (which is causing itching), and loss of hair on the rest of my body. I've had one hair on my chin all my life, and it no longer grows, so bonus.
So...it's been a month since I started Spiro. I'm seeing some hair growth, little hairs coming in! The most significant results have been with my skin though. It is soooo clear and I've had maybe one or two pimples, nothing like the ones I was getting before. I'm hoping that my hair comes back soon, I know it takes a long time but I keep praying and trying not to stress over my loss. I've always had really nice hair so this is just devastating to me. I'm only using Spiro and hair growth oils. I'm terrified of Rogaine.
I've been on spiro for over a year and I'm finally at that spot where a ton of hair is growing on my head. I can definitely see a difference, however it took me a pretty long time.
@@shenell1185 I took 50mg/day for a little over a year and have started to see myhair grow back. I had an appointment with my dermatologist last week and talked to her about how I'm seeing success with my hair and skin and she said I could move up to 100mg/day. I'm loving it so far, no real side effects aside from noticing I'm a little tired and less motivated to workout 😅.
I’m also on spiro for a little over a year and my skin has totally transformed!! It is so clear and no more cystic acne. I’ve also noticed hair grow!! Only big down side is the frequent bathroom runs. I’m taking 50mg a day doc Said take twice a day but I could never.
Great video- very informative.Agree with you about getting an accurate diagnosis before embarking on any treatment. Love to ur mom- hope she's doing well 🌹💜
I know someone who has anemia and thyroid problems and they had their hair thin so much they were worried of becoming bald. They started this medication and we all saw hair improvements!! Hair looks less grey too wow . They told us it was the new tea they were drinking lol now I know! It makes perfect sense. 😺
Thanks, Dt. Dray. What a great, informative video. That would be a yes to a video about spironolactone and hirsutism. It is such an aggravation to keep up with it, and it negatively affects how I feel about myself.
I would love to see a video on spironolactone for hirsutism and “peach fuzz” too. Also i would love to know if excess facial hair is still considered hirsutism If the hair is “peach fuzz” and not course. Thanks!
I would love to hear more about medications that cause hair loss. I take alesse which is an androgenic birth control and keep reading online that it makes hair loss worse. Certainly it made my acne worse. I also take wellbutrin which is said to increase the rate of balding. I don't know if I should switch to an estrogen based birth control or ditch the wellbutrin or if I should ask about this medication. It's hard to get my doc to even care about peeing blood let alone hair thinning.
I am a retired medical provider in womens health. I can tell you that Alesse is a strong androgenic birth control pill. The estrogen dose is too low for hair loss issues. Need a 35 mcg estrogenic birth control pill. Wellbutrin can also cause hair loss.
Hi, how long were you on Wellbutrin? This just sparked a light bulb in my head. I started looking hair in high school and I was was on welbutrin for a couple months when I was 17. Around the same age I stated losing hair
That was really interesting. I have started using a shampoo with zinc pyrithione to alternate with my regular shampoo and it really helps my thin hair and oily scalp.
@@nm-xu2ik At the moment it's Kerastase Specifique Bain Anti Pelliculaire. I know it's a mouthful. A bit of an investment but Head and Shoulders just didn't work for me. My hair just doesn't like dimethicone as it tends to leave a film on my hair and weighs it down. The Kerastase one also contains salicylic acid. It does contain sls though which you might not be so keen on. Just thought I better mention it.
I have PCOS and spironolactone is probably the one thing that has made a difference, but i would have to say you have to take at least 100 mg, i took 25 mg for a long time and it didnt do much.
I’m went to dr and she said my scalp is healthy 🙃 and don’t even give me nothing and now see on line dr and I take the pill so happy hope my hair grows
OMGOSH!!! Great and informative post. Thanks so much. I’m a fairly new subscriber so haven’t watched all the previous posts yet; however, I’ve been seriously interested in getting a laser-hair-loss product. I’m definitely going back to review.
I have androgenic alopecia which for a while was maintained with initially improved and was maintained with rogaine and Yaz, but now it's suddenly gotten worse again (despite not changing my routine) and I'm not a candidate for spironolactone due to issues with hypotension. I see some women in the online forums I frequent are on finasteride (which I know is usually for men), but it's never been offered to me. I'm on BC so the potential for birth defects shouldn't be an issue. Why are derms less willing to prescribe fin for women? Studies show 2.5 - 5 mg help pre and postmenopausal women's hair loss.
Happy Tuesday Dr. Dray 💜 I am slowly cutting back on the dose of Spiro. Unfortunately I don’t think Spiro or Rogaine do much. However, you answered an question on IG where you said Vit A may helps Minoxidil work better? Coincidentally I have had great hair growth since using the helmet and retinoid cream. I would like to find out which has been helping. It would be great if you can do a video on the effect of retinoid when using minoxidil. Thank you.
Jennifer Smith Hi Jennifer, it’s the tretinoin that I was referring to. I use it as part of my skincare. Unless I misunderstood her, it helps with the absorption of Rogaine ? I’m not entirely sure ...
Thank You Sooo Much Sweet Friend!! Happy Tuesday!! I Hope You're Having a Super Amazing Day!! Please You and Yours Stay Safe and Well!! Always!! XOxoxo!!
Well, neat! I've been taking this for about 4 years now with great results for my adult acne (which started in my early 40's). I have noticed improvement in hair growth. Bonus!
MsBuggyness Hello! I am 42, female like you and my acne started along with my perimenopause in my late 30’s. I took spiro twice for one year per treatment, 50 mg a day in the morning and worked wonderfully for me. Both times i stopped the treatment, after 5-6 months the acne came back, my hair changed its texture and fell a lot. If you don’t mind my asking, how many mgs are you taking per day and for how long did your doctor advise you to be on it? Thanks in advance for your answer!
Rhalou I’m prescribed 100mg once a day. I’ve also tried stopping and the acne returned. My dr hasn’t said a limit for how long I should be on it, but she does test my potassium levels once a year with bloodwork as it can affect that and the liver.
MsBuggyness Thank you for your prompt response! Yes, i checked my potassium and liver serum levels and they all seemed to be ok. As for your hair, have you seen any changes when you stopped the medication? I suppose i have to start all over again with the spiro, as of now, i am in full menopause and taking cyclical Hrt already😔
you made me feel better about taking this medication. my derm prescribed it for my hair thinning and loss, but i never take any medication so it makes me nervous. i'm going to try it for 6 mo-1 yr bc i hear really good things. thanks
While I agree that seeing a dermatologist in person is ideal, the last time I saw one for a head to toe skin, check all they tried to do really was sell me anti-aging treatments. Additionally, many people encounter long waiting lists and reduced coverage - if any - to see a specialist.
This medication scares me. I was prescribed this today. If it lowers blood pressure and you already have a normal blood pressure will it bottom out? Will this cause dehydration? I don’t trust this at all
Thank You Sooo Much Sweet Friend!! Happy Tuesday!! I Hope You're Having an Incredible Day!! Please You and Yours Stay Safe and Well!! Always!! XOxoxo!!
Hey Dr Dray, thank you so much for the amazing videos, you have helped tones of people and we are grateful. Can you please give us some context why spironolactone and not bicalutamide?
Leave a comment in the description box lol I love watching your videos. I’m a nurse that likes to keep learning about anything and everything. Thank you!
It works. If you can take it. In the short term it lowers your blood pressure and can make you faint or worse. In the long term it might affect the immune system as it slows down the functioning of adrenal glands and all others in fact. I had it in a very low dose for several years and got all kind of infections, including recurrent herpes. Until I realised what was going on. My endocrinologist said it was rare but possible. The fact is I almost never get problems since I stopped. Of course the good effects went too, but what else could I do. Hair is dispensable. Our health is not. Matter of priority.
I take 100mg of spiro twice a day and I still have hair loss. I cannot use a laser due to having an AICD. But I also take a lot of medications. I was diagnosed with chronic TE but it's been over 2 yrs now. It's odd that now I pass a hair pull test but yet it just tumbles right out of my head or combing. It's very depressing for me.
I've been taking a low dose of this medication for acne and hair loss, doc suspected a hormonal disruption. So far I can't tell if it's working, I was asked to take a higher dose by doubling my intake but my side effects got bad. I already pee a lot, so even the low dose made me pee more frequently, so doubling the dose I was in the bathroom non stop, really really bad dry mouth, constant unquenchable thirst, and unfortunately, stomach upset (#2 distress). It was a few weeks of this and I went back down to the lower dose. I'm also on cymbalta, my dose was also raised around the same time, so it could've been a combo of both meds, idk.
@@seren1010 oh, I've been off of it, it just didn't work for me at all. I had to go on BC (Yasmin) for my acne problems. It's helped clear me up, I still get breakouts but much less so, my face is no longer oily- it's a bit dry now actually 🤔 and my periods are shorter and no longer painful or very heavy anymore!
If you are interested, can you do a video on CCCA? I am being treated for that type of hair loss- I’m taking mometasone furoate. Thanks for all of your info 💚

Thanks Doc, another A+. I’m going to try Rogaine first. Another issue I have is wrinkles on my chest, need to try sleeping on my back, my least favorite position.
my derm literally did just a visual test and was like "looks like aga, not much to do but use minox and if you want you can try spiro and get it refilled by your GP. thanks for coming bye~"
Postmenopausal and I was given spironolactone for acne. It sent my hormones further out of balance. It caused excess estrogen, which affected my tendons, which caused my muscles throughout my body to go into spasms. It was not the diuretic effect that caused that because lab tests showed all of my electrolytes were fine. It took me over a year to recover from the pain and the damage of those spasms. I ended up with pinched nerves and nerve pain for a year . Tight muscles and muscle . In other words, chronic pain without any Treatment available. I was only on the drug for a week. Just long enough to create a domino effect in my body. should be used with caution. It messes with your hormones in ways that doctors aren't prepared to understand. It's not just a matter of blocking androgens. It's prescribed pretty recklessly, just like Accutane
I use Spiro. It seems to help with the side effects of using Minoxidil. My derm is upping my dose by 25 mg and sends me for blood work. I am at 75 mg now. Hard to tell if it is working because of the Minox. Will comment again when I get over 100 mg.
@@shenell1185 Yes. As of November, I am at 100mg. I see a HUGE difference. My hair is noticeably thicker and is about halfway between my shoulder and elbow. I also noticed my breast are getting larger, so I'm dieting to try slow the growth. This is the only side effect I noticed from taking the drug.
Thank you for all the information on spironolactone. Can you please do a video on 5% topical spironolactone in the treatment of hair loss for women and men? Thank you!
This cleared my acne really well when I took it. It took at least 3 months to start to clear. It takes time but over time mine cleared and I never had any more bad breakouts. I still did my regular face routine as I did prior but it helped me so much and I took it for acne/pcos and high blood pressure and bloating. I want to get back on it cause my facial hair it’s already really bad but maybe it will at least keep it from getting worst. I hate having hair on my face it’s so embarrassing 😢I hope you make a video about it Dr. Dray. Please I try shaving but u can still see hair under my skin and I can’t wax and creams broke me out also and it’s way too many and to painful to keep up with tweezers. I could shave everyday honestly but then I breakout if I do so I can’t go out of the house on those days lol that’s sad but true.i bet if u seen my face it probably the most u ever seen. I even got laser and it didn’t help not one bit. It felt like during I had 7 treatments every 6 weeks then after couple months it al grew back and not even one hair less it’s like it almost triggered more hair to grow. I don’t understand how men transgender to women and get that but nobody can’t help me? I can’t really even afford laser and saved for that and it didn’t work. I was so upset.
Dr Dray, could you make a video on how to care for your skin when you have trichotillomania and/or dermatillomania? I have trich, and sometimes the only way for me to keep myself from pulling hair from my head is to pull hair on my legs or pick my skin. The hair on my head just feels more important... But it usually leaves my legs with red spots all over. I know I should probably focus on dealing with the compulsion, but it would be nice to know how to properly take care of my skin when I've damaged it.
Hi Dr Dray! About 3 weeks or so into spironolactone 100mg, I noticed my body was incredibly itchy and sensitive and I developed dermatographism out of nowhere. I stopped the Spironolactone, as recommended by my derm, and the itching has gone away mostly completely. My derm didn't think Spiro was the cause but I can't imagine the timing of the itchiness was all a coincidence. I have AGA and I am really bummed to think I can't get back on Spiro. What are your thoughts?
I have used sp. many times, everytime not more than 6 months. Last time, it made my periods irregular. I started to have them in every 35 days and between I started to have small bleedings. It also shortened my periods. It did a good job on hair loss though. I stopped shedding and my facial hair weakened. I had less oily skin. My doc. made use it with birth control pill because of the irregularity and I hated it.

Thank you so much for all your help. I am seeing a local dermatologist next week. I do have Hashimotos thyroid disease.
What dosage are you on?
@@SamanthaRod at what dosage may I ask?
@@shenell1185 I took 50mg/day for a little over a year and have started to see myhair grow back. I had an appointment with my dermatologist last week and talked to her about how I'm seeing success with my hair and skin and she said I could move up to 100mg/day. I'm loving it so far, no real side effects aside from noticing I'm a little tired and less motivated to workout 😅.
I’m also on spiro for a little over a year and my skin has totally transformed!! It is so clear and no more cystic acne. I’ve also noticed hair grow!! Only big down side is the frequent bathroom runs. I’m taking 50mg a day doc
Said take twice a day but I could never.
Thanks so much for this Dr. Dray! My dermatologist wants to prescribe this for my hair loss. So helpful to listen to your video 😊
Did you get results ?
Thanks, Dt.
Thanks!
Happy Tuesday 🌻 excellent information
I would love to hear more about medications that cause hair loss. I take alesse which is an androgenic birth control and keep reading online that it makes hair loss worse. Certainly it made my acne worse. I also take wellbutrin which is said to increase the rate of balding. I don't know if I should switch to an estrogen based birth control or ditch the wellbutrin or if I should ask about this medication. It's hard to get my doc to even care about peeing blood let alone hair thinning.
Yes please. Also can you please make a video on Prurigo nodularis
There are physicians who genuinely want to help. I encourage you to change doctors.
I am a retired medical provider in womens health. I can tell you that Alesse is a strong androgenic birth control pill. The estrogen dose is too low for hair loss issues. Need a 35 mcg estrogenic birth control pill. Wellbutrin can also cause hair loss.
Get him to refer you to a dermatologist
Hi, how long were you on Wellbutrin? This just sparked a light bulb in my head. I started looking hair in high school and I was was on welbutrin for a couple months when I was 17. Around the same age I stated losing hair
That was really interesting. I have started using a shampoo with zinc pyrithione to alternate with my regular shampoo and it really helps my thin hair and oily scalp.
Which shampoo?
@@nm-xu2ik At the moment it's Kerastase Specifique Bain Anti Pelliculaire. I know it's a mouthful. A bit of an investment but Head and Shoulders just didn't work for me. My hair just doesn't like dimethicone as it tends to leave a film on my hair and weighs it down. The Kerastase one also contains salicylic acid. It does contain sls though which you might not be so keen on. Just thought I better mention it.
You are such a help for so many people!!!
Happy Tuesday Stay safe and healthy everyone 😊🍁
Happy Tuesday
I have PCOS and spironolactone is probably the one thing that has made a difference, but i would have to say you have to take at least 100 mg, i took 25 mg for a long time and it didnt do much.
I would love a video for hair growth on the face, thank you so much.
I took this and my hair line grew back but unfortunately had to discontinue using it as it dehydrated me quickly. But everyone's body is different.
How was your hair after you stopped
Happy Tuesday Dr. Dray. Excellent video always.

Bad side effects for me
@@minniethomas6206 what side effects if you dont mind sharing?
I’ve been taking 100mg for a couple of years to treat excess hair due to PCOS and it has helped.
So interesting! My endocrinologist prescribed spironolactone to help treat hirsutism (pcos related), thanks for another great video Dr. Dray! 🧡
Did it work?
How long can you be on it
Hey guys!!!! Love your videos Dr Dray!
Thanks!
this medication absoloutely changed my whole life with hair and acne.🥰🥰🥰🥰
Use it for heart failure ,blood pressure, fluid , but happy to see for hairloss
Interesting info, Dr Dray. The before and after pictures from were pretty impressive. Thanks so much and have a wonderful evening! 💜
Can you talk about prp treatments for hair loss?
I’m went to dr and she said my scalp is healthy 🙃 and don’t even give me nothing and now see on line dr and I take the pill so happy hope my hair grows
OMGOSH!!! Great and informative post. Thanks so much. I’m a fairly new subscriber so haven’t watched all the previous posts yet; however, I’ve been seriously interested in getting a laser-hair-loss product. I’m definitely going back to review.
Happy Tuesday Dr Dray...see you tomorrow x💙🤩
Hey did you find a solution
Happy Tuesday Dr. Dray 💜 I am slowly cutting back on the dose of Spiro. Unfortunately I don’t think Spiro or Rogaine do much. However, you answered an question on IG where you said Vit A may helps Minoxidil work better? Coincidentally I have had great hair growth since using the helmet and retinoid cream. I would like to find out which has been helping. It would be great if you can do a video on the effect of retinoid when using minoxidil. Thank you.
How did you use Vit A with Minoxid? I would like try this combination
Jennifer Smith Hi Jennifer, it’s the tretinoin that I was referring to. I use it as part of my skincare. Unless I misunderstood her, it helps with the absorption of Rogaine ? I’m not entirely sure ...
Always appreciative of your alopecia-related content.
What concentration of spironolactone did you take? I took 50mg/day and felt very dizzy.
Dr. Dray, please do a video on Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia.
YES PLEASE do spironolactone for hirsutism, I went to my dermatologist because I have it but she referred me to a gynecologist...

I suppose i have to start all over again with the spiro, as of now, i am in full menopause and taking cyclical Hrt already😔
you made me feel better about taking this medication. my derm prescribed it for my hair thinning and loss, but i never take any medication so it makes me nervous. i'm going to try it for 6 mo-1 yr bc i hear really good things. thanks
How is it going now? Has the hair loss stopped or any new regrowth or side effects?
Yes to a video on facial hair!!
While I agree that seeing a dermatologist in person is ideal, the last time I saw one for a head to toe skin, check all they tried to do really was sell me anti-aging treatments. Additionally, many people encounter long waiting lists and reduced coverage - if any - to see a specialist.
Great video thanks! Can you please do one about PRP for hair loss? Unless you’ve done one before, sorry I can’t seem to find it!
This medication scares me. I was prescribed this today. If it lowers blood pressure and you already have a normal blood pressure will it bottom out? Will this cause dehydration? I don’t trust this at all
Happy Tuesday dr Dray and everyone🤗🤗 Another informative video .Have a great day and love to mom and Tybee 😍😍
Thank you! You too!

Matter of priority.
please do a video on how to minimize facial hair growth for women!
Great video! Has longer term Spironolactone use ever been linked to gout?
I take this for my PCOS. So far so good, I may increase my dosage in a few months.
What does do u take.currently ?
I like all your videos. Thank you for spending your time to educate us. Have an amazing day Dr. Dray!
I just got a prescription for this, but I am terrified to take this based on the scary experiences of others,.
Hi, how is your spironolactone treatment going? for your hair I mean

Thanks Doc, another A+. I’m going to try Rogaine first. Another issue I have is wrinkles on my chest, need to try sleeping on my back, my least favorite position.
My derm just prescribed for hair loss that occurred during menopause. I am hopeful:)
my derm literally did just a visual test and was like "looks like aga, not much to do but use minox and if you want you can try spiro and get it refilled by your GP. thanks for coming bye~"
Did you up the dosage? Any benefit?
@@shenell1185 Yes. As of November, I am at 100mg. I see a HUGE difference. My hair is noticeably thicker and is about halfway between my shoulder and elbow. I also noticed my breast are getting larger, so I'm dieting to try slow the growth. This is the only side effect I noticed from taking the drug.

Dr. Dray.... Your SKIN looks amazing!!!
What about the side effects?
I haven’t gone up to 75 mg yet but my plan is to go up after a month and maybe another month or two I will go up to 100 mg(maybe)
@@sarat8577 Did you see any hair regrowth with 50 mg?
I have used sp. many times, everytime not more than 6 months. Last time, it made my periods irregular. I started to have them in every 35 days and between I started to have small bleedings. It also shortened my periods. It did a good job on hair loss though. I stopped shedding and my facial hair weakened. I had less oily skin. My doc. made use it with birth control pill because of the irregularity and I hated it.
