It's been heartbreaking, she was so happy...
The worst of this thing I heard about her nationality was when I told someone she was from Poland and the person told me with all certainty of the world "NO NO NO, she was Russian!" and I answered only "No, she was so polish that the first element she discovered received the name Polonium, after Poland" and the person stop saying with the most confused face I ever seen.
I was trying not to be arrogant but the only thing in my mind in that moment was the phrase "you really wanna know more than me, her biggest fan, that studied all her life since I was a teen?!?!?" but I didn't say that. Thank God I didn't.
I actually met people who confused her with Sofia Kovalevskaya who was a Russian female mathematician of about the same period.
Someone argued with me that she was French but like I’m polish so I died inside
"You educated elites and your facts." Nice post; thanks.
That was a real hot button issue and still is. Given that she grew up in Russia-occupied Poland and actively worked for the resistance by attending and later teaching classes in Polish, I'm sure the Russians would have liked to claim her for Russia.
@@ksol1460tv yeah, the same way russia claims that Malevich, Kuindzhi, Aivazovsky, Gogol and many other Ukrainian artists are russian, because that time those territories were occupied by russian empire
So on the topic of historical women in science being underappreciated: I took a Cell Biology class in college and when we were talking about the double helix structure of DNA my (male) professor made a point of saying, "Sorry ladies, it was two men who came up with this!" If you know the story with Watson and Crick and Rosalind Franklin, you see the problem there.
We just went over this again in my forensic science class and I was so pissed when I found out they took her work
Not to mention the unprofessionalism of that comment even being made. The fact that a prof would even say that at all, and of course be wrong, is part of the problem. And if you say anything you “can’t take a joke”.
It was actually done be Watson and Crick. Do some research.
@@acetvn2983 also I think its worth noting that James Watson was stripped of his honors for making racist comments. And he has a long history of making sexist remarks.
@@acetvn2983 This made me laugh. I finished the last season of The Boys a few weeks ago and the character “Blue Hawk” represents the classic entitled, racist, sexist white male incel Trump lover type. And he says “do your research” multiple times. Doesn’t actually cite anything at all, no evidence to support his claims, nothing, just states falsehoods confidently then tells people to do their research. Classic “my source: I made it up and how dare you question me”. The sense of entitlement is staggering.

Plot twist, Karolina built a time machine and managed to bring the actual Marie Curie to the future for this interview. I love how the board is wrapped so she doesn't contaminate it lol. I wouldn't say ALL the Marie Curie movies are bad. The 1943 "Madame Curie" film was nominated for 7 Oscars, including Best Picture (then known as Outstanding Motion Picture). Stars Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon, who were both nominated for Oscars, had just the previous year starred in "Mrs. Miniver" (a war drama) which was a massive hit and won 6 Oscars including Best Picture. And months are this was posted, Radioactive had Rosamund Pike who is a fairly well-known Golden Globe nominee.
As someone who's been involved with it, the Institut (Marie) Curie is a French non-profit research hospital focusing specifically on battling cancer, which is probably why people are asking if it's a charity.

Marie Curie is actually one of the greatest inspirations for me both as a woman and science student.
- She was the first woman to win Nobel prize.
- Also, she was the first person to win Nobel prize twice.
- And she was also the first and the only person to win noble prize in two different scientific fields.
- She is known for her discovery of two Elements (Radium & Polonium) and her work in the field of Radioactivity.
- She was also the first Lady Professor in the University of Paris.
In fact, she is the perfect example of women empowerment.
As someone who is neither a woman or a science student, Marie Curie is an inspirations for me because she was fucking awesome.
Inspiration to all of us tbh
when i was in eighth grade, my Math teacher instructed us a project - choose a Mathematician and explain their contribution
I read that Marie Curie also focused on Math at some point even though she is widely known in the field of Science
