Yeah. Only the cult in question is the entirety of the Orthodox Church, because this is how things go with every church/parish in Romania. I hate to admit it but we're a very primitive country when it comes to spirituality. BOR (Biserica Ortodoxa Romana - the Romanian Orthodox Church) not only receive financing from the State but they are also very active politically. SO ACTIVE that a few years ago they manipulated political and public opinion until a referendum was organized "for the family" - it was actually a ploy to make Romanians vote against gay rights, even though the Constitution currently doesn't currently contain any clauses relating to gay rights. This was a time when gay marriage was legalized in several different states in the world and BOR were worried that Romanians would start a movement to start politically tolerating the LGBTQ community (imagine the horror!). Abortions are legal in Romania but they're very hard to access because doctors and hospitals invoke their "right" to choose not to perform them due to "religious, spiritual or moral considerations". We have a political organization called the New Right (Noua Dreapta) which is basically a continuation of the FASCIST Legionary movement of WW2. They "worship" General Antonescu and resemble neo-nazis. Just to give you an inkling of how horrible this is, during WW2 Romania saw its' own implication in the Holocaust, but the violence was aimed at gypsies more than Jews. And these people, the New Right, are a continuation of the organization that orchestrated that during WW2. When Pride events happen they band together and go out into the street to beat up members of the LGBTQ community. We also have a new political party that is gaining more and more traction, AUR. Their main selling points are anti-LGBTQ, "traditional values and traditional family", and of course, misogyny. It is very much a populist, extremist party led by hatred and fear of Occidental change and changing human rights standards. They get a scary amount of votes. So you can understand the context in which this case happened. Romania, and especially rural Romania, is the place to go if you want to live in a world of magic, witchcraft, devils, superstition, and an almighty Heavenly Father who orders violence and hatred through his ordained. In the meantime, BOR get richer and richer by the year and the freebies come in droves. It's scary.
As a person who suffers from mental illness this is a crying shame and very sad that they didn't understand mental illness and the way people were treated was terrible
When I see other Christians doing terrible things it makes me so sad because how is the first thing you think of demons or possession? I immediately thought of mental illness and if I was in that ministry I would guide her to get help and support her through it. Honestly, very heartbreaking

What I wanted to mention is that the picture you used multiple times in your video, presumably meaning it was Irina Cornici, the nun that died, it's actually not her. There is no picture of her, except some disturbing pictures taken by the press on the day of her burrial, in the coffin... The picture you used is of the writer Tatiana Niculescu-Bran, the one who wrote two books about this case, which served as an inspiration for the movie "Dupa dealuri" by Cristian Mungiu. Both the books and the movie are very interesting and I recommend them to people interested in finding out more. I hope you mention this somewhere, so that people don't get confused, since the author is still alive. 🙏

Thanks for the insight, I was confused about the photo when Eleanor mentioned Irina's age as 23 (the photographed woman looks quite older). It's horrible that the monastery tortured Irina under their collective delusion of being religious saviors. It's shocking that the hospital discharged her when she was clearly very ill and needing their care.
My sister has schizophrenia, and it upsets me how badly people like her and Irina are misunderstood and mistreated, even in the 21st century. In my sister's case, she had symptoms from a really young age, and her bio parents were idiots who did treat her like she was possessed for it. I never thought I'd see the day when I was *grateful* they "only" reacted as badly as they did, but hearing this case makes me realize it could've been so much worse. Side note: my sister is one of the more intelligent and kind-hearted people I've ever met. She's also not the only person I've ever known with schizophrenia, and tbh, none of them deserve the bad reputation that their mental illness has. As someone with a different mental illness that's also fearmongered about (personality disorder in my case, also caused by childhood trauma), I appreciate how you show so much empathy for Irina, even when her trauma manifested in less than ideal ways. It's one reason why your channel is one of my favorites.

I'm a Romanian and unfortunately I can confirm during comunist regime, women was frosted to be pregnant, coming abortion,theye were send to death sentence But some woman wend to other women who done abortion to other women,but the methods were very rudimentary and some women died of septicemy or other complications, other lives but with physical repercussions , they did that in secret, women were desperate, being poor with other five or 7 children at home ! After the comunism crushed and ended in years like 89 to late 90's ,the number of children left abounded in maternities and originate , unfortunately increased , that was the repercussions of Ceaușescu's drastic decision over women's body and not any right to choose! Women and families with 12 Children who parents in poverty were incapacity to offer minimum for this children! Only victims who really suffered was the inocent children!

Because we as a country have the worse mentality when it comes to the concept of mental illnesses and religion. Mental illness in Roamnia is still seen in the poor sides as taboo and you do not talk about it because every mental illnes is associated with brain damage and asylum scenarios that you see in movies. We label those so severely that people do not sick help but not even the help is good enough this is why many people use alcohol or violence to deal with their emotions. Also misogyny of women dressing too revealing dispite not being the case or women are the case of all evil in the eyes of many. Another thing is that priests were a foundation in our history as a part of the government (they are no longer) and spiritual leaders of their comunity, the connection between God and people and the only educated people who can read write and talk in the defence of the people (until 1800 most of thebpopulation was very uneducated and still we have a lot). So they were never seen as the one in the wrong dispice there being so many recent cases of priests accuse of harrusments, violence, rape, SA and mostly PDF in our country.
Cuz we, i am romanian, have a toxic relationship with religion that have an historical reason to it, priests were the voice of people as the only people who car read and write in the country and were amoung the rest of society unlike aristocracy, if we can call them aristocracy. Now time have changes but this devolution did not and it proven to be toxic.

It’s so messed up that he had followers who loved and adored him and didn’t care about his murder! It was HIS falut! I can’t believe this even happened…this case is so messed up…and the fact that they thought she was possessed was way to heartbreaking…it’s so sad that this is the world we live in. She deserved better, she deserved to be alive. And he should’ve gotten a life sentence….it’s so heartbreaking that a “PRIEST” and his nuns were responsible for her death…this case really broke my heart. It’s extremely heartbreaking and emotional. I'm not surprised there are nuns that still follow him, he was probably targeting women like Irina and her friend, who had no community, grew up without love, have no support system to fall back on when things go wrong. He may be their first fatherly figure and this may be the first time they feel safe and don't have to worry day to day about food, shelter, or assault.

I remember the horrifying & horrific image's of the orphanages in Romania being broadcast & everyone was absolutely horrified. It caused so much outrage that people in the UK (where I'm from) were reaching out offering to adopt/foster these children, anything to get them out of the nightmare they were trapped in. I also remember the Romanian government refusing anyone the right saying these are our children yet they'd been left chained up, starving, lying in their own excrement, starved of any human contact, the images have never left me, this story brought them flooding back. This poor girl, my god, the worst part is there's thousands that suffered the same life as Irina if not more & we'll never know.

Its so true that people dont think young kids understand things like death. My mom died very suddenly when i was 5 years old and i remember constantly hearing the adults saying "shes so young she doesnt understand" but i did understand my mom was gone and wasnt coming back cuz she died. My brother was in a Romanian orphanage before our parents adopted him. He'd never had solid food before, and they still just fed him through bottles despite him being old enough that he should be eating solid food and not just consuming liquids and baby food. He would choke on half a piece of cereal, because he didn't know that he had to chew. He slept in a crib in the orphanage, even though he was getting too big for it. The only pic I've ever seen of him as a baby was taken by one of the nuns who worked there, and he looked so tiny and scared and his clothes looked so uncomfortable. My parents have frequently talked about how horrifying it was to stay in Bucharest in 90s in order to adopt him.
I have experienced intrusive thoughts and it was a nightmare, uncontrolable derange and dillusional that put you edge of reality and it's like living in both world (Reality and hell) together. As ex suvivor of emotional domestic animal and gone through the aftermath of mental illness, it is terrifying to see someone has bee taken advantage to "cure", "reasonable" and behavoural correction and many form of excuse. Thanks for covering this case i never heard of. I enjoy listen to your true crime video and i like it when youtubers humanised and pioritise the victim.

I know right? In India too, people used to believe, some people does in like rural areas, that having more kids means having more money. They didn't calculate the money they would need to spend on their upbringing. They just thought that the more kids there are, the more earning there will be. What I was thinking was how people reacted on this, saying forcing women to have kids and banning abortions are so medieval, how they can't believe this case is so recent, when this is actually happening now in USA.

Thanks for the insight, I was confused about the photo when Eleanor mentioned Irina's age as 23 (the photographed woman looks quite older). It's horrible that the monastery tortured Irina under their collective delusion of being religious saviors. It's shocking that the hospital discharged her when she was clearly very ill and needing their care.

My sister has schizophrenia, and it upsets me how badly people like her and Irina are misunderstood and mistreated, even in the 21st century. In my sister's case, she had symptoms from a really young age, and her bio parents were idiots who did treat her like she was possessed for it. I never thought I'd see the day when I was *grateful* they "only" reacted as badly as they did, but hearing this case makes me realize it could've been so much worse. Side note: my sister is one of the more intelligent and kind-hearted people I've ever met. She's also not the only person I've ever known with schizophrenia, and tbh, none of them deserve the bad reputation that their mental illness has. As someone with a different mental illness that's also fearmongered about (personality disorder in my case, also caused by childhood trauma), I appreciate how you show so much empathy for Irina, even when her trauma manifested in less than ideal ways. It's one reason why your channel is one of my favorites.

I'm a Romanian and unfortunately I can confirm during comunist regime, women was frosted to be pregnant, coming abortion,theye were send to death sentence But some woman wend to other women who done abortion to other women,but the methods were very rudimentary and some women died of septicemy or other complications, other lives but with physical repercussions , they did that in secret, women were desperate, being poor with other five or 7 children at home ! After the comunism crushed and ended in years like 89 to late 90's ,the number of children left abounded in maternities and originate , unfortunately increased , that was the repercussions of Ceaușescu's drastic decision over women's body and not any right to choose! Women and families with 12 Children who parents in poverty were incapacity to offer minimum for this children! Only victims who really suffered was the inocent children!

Because we as a country have the worse mentality when it comes to the concept of mental illnesses and religion.
Mental illness in Roamnia is still seen in the poor sides as taboo and you do not talk about it because every mental illnes is associated with brain damage and asylum scenarios that you see in movies. We label those so severely that people do not sick help but not even the help is good enough this is why many people use alcohol or violence to deal with their emotions. Also misogyny of women dressing too revealing dispite not being the case or women are the case of all evil in the eyes of many.
Another thing is that priests were a foundation in our history as a part of the government (they are no longer) and spiritual leaders of their comunity, the connection between God and people and the only educated people who can read write and talk in the defence of the people (until 1800 most of thebpopulation was very uneducated and still we have a lot). So they were never seen as the one in the wrong dispice there being so many recent cases of priests accuse of harrusments, violence, rape, SA and mostly PDF in our country.
Cuz we, i am romanian, have a toxic relationship with religion that have an historical reason to it, priests were the voice of people as the only people who car read and write in the country and were amoung the rest of society unlike aristocracy, if we can call them aristocracy. Now time have changes but this devolution did not and it proven to be toxic.
when I was 16 I was diagnosed schizoaffective and put on zyprexa just like her. I was raised extremely christian this hits VERY close to home. Poor angel.

It’s so messed up that he had followers who loved and adored him and didn’t care about his murder! It was HIS falut! I can’t believe this even happened…this case is so messed up…and the fact that they thought she was possessed was way to heartbreaking…it’s so sad that this is the world we live in. She deserved better, she deserved to be alive. And he should’ve gotten a life sentence….it’s so heartbreaking that a “PRIEST” and his nuns were responsible for her death…this case really broke my heart. It’s extremely heartbreaking and emotional. I hope things will get better soon

I'm not surprised there are nuns that still follow him, he was probably targeting women like Irina and her friend, who had no community, grew up without love, have no support system to fall back on when things go wrong. He may be their first fatherly figure and this may be the first time they feel safe and don't have to worry day to day about food, shelter, or assault.

I remember the horrifying & horrific image's of the orphanages in Romania being broadcast & everyone was absolutely horrified. It caused so much outrage that people in the UK (where I'm from) were reaching out offering to adopt/foster these children, anything to get them out of the nightmare they were trapped in. I also remember the Romanian government refusing anyone the right saying these are our children yet they'd been left chained up, starving, lying in their own excrement, starved of any human contact, the images have never left me, this story brought them flooding back. This poor girl, my god, the worst part is there's thousands that suffered the same life as Irina if not more & we'll never know.

I remember watching a documentary about the abandoned orphans from Serbia or Romania I can’t remember. But it broke my heart so bad and I can’t forget those poor babies’ faces. It was incredibly disturbing and depressing. I thought at the time, how am I gonna live life knowing there are children that actively go through this. But I hope they’re in a better place now. Rest in peace Irina.

it's crazy to think my mum lived during the same period that she did- my mother came from the capital, Bucharest, but was moved to the countryside- Craiova- with my great-grandmother. It is actually so bizarre to think that this was happening at the same time that my mum was living her own life

Its so true that people dont think young kids understand things like death. My mom died very suddenly when i was 5 years old and i remember constantly hearing the adults saying "shes so young she doesnt understand" but i did understand my mom was gone and wasnt coming back cuz she died. Kids may not show the same emotions and words as adults but they understand way way more than people think.

My brother was in a Romanian orphanage before our parents adopted him. He'd never had solid food before, and they still just fed him through bottles despite him being old enough that he should be eating solid food and not just consuming liquids and baby food. He would choke on half a piece of cereal, because he didn't know that he had to chew. He slept in a crib in the orphanage, even though he was getting too big for it. The only pic I've ever seen of him as a baby was taken by one of the nuns who worked there, and he looked so tiny and scared and his clothes looked so uncomfortable. My parents have frequently talked about how horrifying it was to stay in Bucharest in 90s in order to adopt him.
I have experienced intrusive thoughts and it was a nightmare, uncontrolable derange and dillusional that put you edge of reality and it's like living in both world (Reality and hell) together. As ex suvivor of emotional domestic animal and gone through the aftermath of mental illness, it is terrifying to see someone has bee taken advantage to "cure", "reasonable" and behavoural correction and many form of excuse.
Thanks for covering this case i never heard of. I enjoy listen to your true crime video and i like it when youtubers humanised and pioritise the victim.

I know right? In India too, people used to believe, some people does in like rural areas, that having more kids means having more money. They didn't calculate the money they would need to spend on their upbringing. They just thought that the more kids there are, the more earning there will be.
What I was thinking was how people reacted on this, saying forcing women to have kids and banning abortions are so medieval, how they can't believe this case is so recent, when this is actually happening now in USA.

i'm not too sure if its the same in orthodox denominations, but I'm pretty sure at least in catholicism that priest normally have to study theology etc for 5-7 years, its a long process and part of why it is/ws so respected. so, this guy just getting ordained, ayyy red flag scry.

This is such an unfortunate story. As somebody who experiences mental health issues that can't be cured and only xan be managed, it's so sad hearing how poorly that ENTIRE system failed her. I cannot imagine how horrifying it was to go through the episodes of schizophrenia, on top of that gruesome torture she was subjected to. May she rest in peace ❤️
