For those confused about the drop in quality, everything post-2000 is after the company got sold off. Needless to say, some of the talent was lost in the mix.
KOF 2000 has the best portraits in all the series, one of the best soundtracks and sprite work, pushing the neo geo to the limit. By that time snk had a bunch of talent working for them it's quite a shame we didn't get to see what they could have a accomplished together with more powerful hardware after the Company's demise in the same year.
KOF 2001 portraits tried to show the personality of the characters but apart from Terry it did not work. Also Kim looks more psychotic than usual in KOF 2001.
If you noticed the portraits of KOF2000 have the characters make their signature poses of their special attacks before/aftermath. Examples like Ryo using his Ichigeki Hissatsu, or Iori preparing to use Maiden Masher (asobi wa owari da), and to simple ones like Takuma using Ko ou-ken, Ramon's Sobat Kick, Ralf's Galactica Phantom and even Clark's running elbow after he throws someone. It's weird that I only noticed this poses just now after all this time. It maybe don't fit for winning poses but certainly great for dynamic poses either way.
I've always thought the 2001 portraits have a lot of personality to them, the stylization ain't all that bad. The problem is, it just doesn't fit a KOF game. If I look at it as fanart tho, yeah pretty good I'd say. 2000 portraits are king however, top tier stuff.
I persobally prefer the artstyle of 2001 Shingo, Xiangfei, Vanessa, Maxima, K9999, Angel, Kula, King, Hinako, Chin, Ryo, Takuma and Yuri are my favorites
I love how the majority of the portraits from 2001 makes the characters look like they've just gotten a whiff of a righteous wet fart. I laugh every time I see them.
theprotectshade lack of budget, mostly. The artist of 2001 (Nona)is not a bad artist, it just doesn't fit drawn with so little details. In other words, it's the other artists fault to render Nona's art badly.
Yes, SNK broke that year. But i don't think this is the only reason for that artstyle... it was just a choice, that really didn't fit in KOF. Anyway, you need to lose that mentallity of "new means better".

I just don't understand the people complaining about the art in KOF 2001. Nona's art just has so much more personality and isn't sold or influenced by the typical generic anime/edgy art styles that suffocate everywhere. It's something to see Shingo's art as despite being a rookie in KOF and being full of bruises he still celebrates his victory, or Joe with his typical pants off, Terry covering his mouth alluding to wolf fangs, Yuri demonstrating his orthodoxy with Kyokugen in his face, Chang and his little filter of manners due to his criminal and brute nature, and so on... It is true that people's tastes are subjective but the constant attacks on the illustration style of KOF 2001 that I see everywhere makes me think that beyond subjectivity people simply do not have the vision to take Nona's art in a way more critical and rational instead of being so simplistic in their analysis or their are too intoxicated with the constant bombardment of today's edgy/anime art. Without subjectivities and being critical, Nona's art is the most expressive and charismatic in all of KOF. Nona's art doesn't prostitute itself to the second-rate anime influences or the overly edgy art that's everywhere. It is true that Nona abuses of exaggerating some main characteristics of the bodies of his illustrations but he is totally eloquent with what he wants to show, not like the art of KOF 2000 that although it is very showy and attractive, it does not reflect even in the slightest the personalities of the characters.
Thank you for this video, I was wondering if you could do a character select portrait comparison in the near future? Please keep up the fantastic work.
2000 was made by Hiroaki, the same who did the artwork from Kof XI and Advance Wars Days of Ruin and Advance Wars Dark Days, 2001 was made by Noona the same who did Kof XIII sprites.
These two KOF have different style but I both love them. Compared to 97', 2001's portraits are pretty pleasant and funny. There's just Clark from 2001 who's ugly as fuck, he looks like an statue of Passover Island.
