Dreamcast intro is a direct port of arcade intro version.
That’s the NA stand-alone PS2 version. If we were comparing the NESTS Collection version of KOF 2001, it’s arcade perfect (NEOGEO mode) or the PS2-specific extras mode (3D Backgrounds, arranged soundtracks, night and day levels, extra characters).
Options are good, aren’t they? 😉
@@GooseDaPlaymaker so you can change between both versions ! i see .
@@osamaroum Yep. I have the Orochi Collection, NESTS Collection, 98 UM, and 2K2 UM Tougeki for PS2 (JP) and they’re all completely uncensored, upgraded with 3D backgrounds/new graphics in intro and other areas/night and day stages/sometimes extra characters with an option to play the original NEOGEO arcade perfect port (no ‘Now Loading’ screens and frames are perfect). The NA versions usually have loading screens, missing frames, and don’t have any of the Japanese PS2-specific extras.
Yep
@@GooseDaPlaymaker 5x better than Neo Geo
Beside the portraits, the PS2 background are weird, like having a blurred filter that also affects the colors of the characters. I would choose the DC version for being a more faithful port of the arcade.
The Dreamcast version could be emulated. As it looks like it is running the rom of the Neo Geo version of the original game. With the 98 and 99 editions of the KOF series on Dreamcast they were ported from the ground up. Like in the PS2 port of this game where it is ported from the ground up. Like how Last Blade 2 on the Dreamcast is probably using the same emulation that the Dreamcast ports of the later King Of Fighters games on the Dreamcast up to the 2002 edition of the game. I don’t know it looks like it is emulated on the Dreamcast to me.
@@sharpester7277 Maybe It was easier to port a MVS game to the Naomi board, making It easier to SNK Just port the rom instead of making a new version from the ground up.
I hate purposely added smoothing filters. To make things less pixelated they put a slight blur over everything. Even the characters aren't as crisp. If it's purposely added, HD will only help so much.
@@Lightblue2222 For me It feels like the developers just learnt about Anti-aliasing, fell in love with it and cranked It up to the maximum.
The sega port is way better. Looks emulated so it was easy $$$ for them. garou was the same if I remember.
Thanks for the video. I always liked KOF 2001 even acknowledging its shortcomings. The PS2 versions have some nice "improvements", if we can call them this way, but I felt the new intro was totally unnecessary and lazier than the original.
The OG is simple yet hard and catchy.
I wouldn't bash the PS2 version of the intro cuz it's the one that I'm so nostalgic with😁🔥💯
Thank you for this. I was just debating which version was better, and this video was perfect for reference
I always felt that SNK was joking Capcom for being lazy, i meant, Athena got a new sprite in almost every single KOF but Morrigan, omg that sprite was recycled beyond time... also i love 2001 art, they infused so much charisma on them, is truly amazing
Yeah, her and Robert are like the only ones that got a new upgrade each and every time. Sometimes yuri
@@Cupcom5 Its tricky for Robert since in some instances, I feel SNK reused his Art of Fighting 3 sprite (downgraded of course), so he wasn't made from ground up every time.
I don't want to demean their work, just pointing it out.
Dreamcast's Kof 2001 characters be like: 🗿
Literally the kof characters if they did the mewing XD
Not really lol
Mai has no "bounce" in PS2 version
How interesting...
PAL version is uncensored
US and Japanese PS2 versions did not remove that animation.
@@Bloodreign1 I own the US version on the PS2. And Mai,s bouncing boob animation when she is walking and in her standing pose is gone from both kof 2000 and 2001. Her boob animation only appears when she is crouch walking.
I also have modified original Xbox woth mame arcade versions of kof 2000 and 2001. Mai, boob animation is also removed in those.
I think the Dreamcast ports of KOF 2000 and 2001 were enhanced ports of the arcade games. Just like KOF Dreammatch 98 on the Dreamcast was an enhanced port of KOF 98
@@Damackism I only own Japanese versions of all the PS2 KoF 2D games outside of XI, all have Mai's bounciness in them completely unaltered.
Fantastic comparison. Good work!
Lindo trabalho rapazes, PF continuem!
Ps2 looks like blur filter, dreamcast looks better.
Ps2 has the 2 version, anyway you can turn off the filter.
Yeah, but when you actually play on a PS2 it looks better. You can't see on this video the perspective differences while in movement because they're stopped.
And, that " blurry" effect gives more impression of focus on the characters, different from the pixalated visual mess from arcade and dreamcast versions. On the PS2 have also two versions of each level (minimal weather difference or whatever).
Ps2 still best choice for all old KOF's, absolutely.
@@cybermx8896 oh wish that was shown instead then.
@@Lordicus21 that's true can't see the perspective effects.
Just going off what was shown here I still like the dreamcast pixelated look.
The backgrounds don't gel with rest of the gfx IMO.
@@bloomerb4162 sure, all about taste. Both looks awesome.
Hello thank you for your amazing work side by side comparison, its a pleasure to see how Neogeo version is good compare to others systems.I would like to ask you if you can give me the title of the intro music at the beginning of each video.Thank you:)
Sometimes, especially when I'm watching your videos, I really want a Dreamcast, even more than PS5 or Xbox series (although I never had a game consoles).
By the way, thanks for the videos :)
Redream
@@games4saleMX Redream is not the same play nfl 2k1 on it the polygons are weird, plus you dont get that Dreamcast texture look yeah you get 4k on redream but its still not the same its an ok alternative
I had both , Dreamcast all the way.
Ps2: different character portraits and some animated stages. Aside of unlocking the bosses and the Zero's strikers, you have nothing much more.
Recalling that, the PS2 also has the original version (Arcade Perfect) included in the collection The King of Fighters: NESTS Collection (NeoGeo Online Collection Vol. 7), released only in Japan.
That collection is pretty good! It's a shame it was never released outside Japan. It's the only port of Kof 99 on Ps2, too
@@znmrtns Yes, KOF 99 Evolution that was previously exclusive to DC and PC, on the PS2 port you can choose the kOF 99 bgm from Arcade.
Japaneses ports and Neo geo Online Collections are the best.
Too bad you cant customize the buttons in that ver.
That collection is awesome, I bought a copy years back, the best options to own KoF 99-01.
@@winythepoohpuente2875 You can't customize the buttons in the arcade versions on Nests Hen, but you sure can do so on the DC versions on that collection.
Primeiramente, Feliz Ano Novo VCDECIDE!!!

Dc artworks from the selection screen are more dynamic in the most of cases and look more fresh
To me naw PS2 looks more detailed defined and has more variety and is more dynamic compared to NG and DC.
I agree with you the DC/NG artworks have the characters look more expresive than ever before
The ugly ass character artwork stayed on the DC version, while they improved those dramatically on the PS2 version. Shame they didn't bring that to the Nests Hen compilation, but c'est la vie, at least it got remixed music and original music options.
@@Bloodreign1 That's why I like the NESTS Hen Compilation :)
@@kaceejones2282 in ps2 look more detailed but the artstyle and poses are less dynamics. Its a thing of taste, the cartoonized artstyle of the ng/dc looks fresh for me

Feliz 2021 Marota!
O PS2 tem a versão igual do Dreamcast, inclusive é o Nests collection icluindo o KOF99 e KOF 2000.
Dreamcast has bouncy effects compared to PS2 stiffness
Dream cast is better than I thought it really lives up to the hype!
DC has better expressions in its art compared to PS2 but PS2 is better drawn and more detailed. Tho Neo Geo and DC had better expressions in its art but theyve still couldve drawn it better. The entire art graphics and visuals seems rushed and wished they'd polished the game more.
What made you think the Dreamcast couldn’t handle an SNK game? Not trying to come off condescending. Genuinely curious.
It had an arcade perfect port of Street Fighter 3, and the CPS3 board is a lot more advanced than the SNK one.
Absolutely love the Character Portraits from the DC Version.
I have both Versions but never played the Dreamcast one.
Dreamcast wins this one.
I know that people hated the character select illustration art in KOF 2001, but wow, I'm surprised at how blurry the character art and backgrounds, in the PS2 version looks though.
Mai has no jiggles in PS2 version? That's surprising. Lol!😂
5:32 Dreamcast version of my favourite stage looks better.
Late 80's house music? My parents must be dance jiggling by now.👍😎
Japanese PS2 version, Mai's jiggles are all there. I should know because just about every KoF game I have on PS2 are the Japanese versions, save for XI (94 Rebout, 95-97, 98 UM, 99-01 via Nests Saga, 02, and 03, both sold separately in Japan, and Neowave). Blame that animation censor on SNK, not the PS2.
I like the Dreamcast version better. But the PS2 version is also nice. Just depends on what you like. To me the pixel at is more retro on Dreamcast. PS2 has a blur or blending filter that also looks nice in its own way kind more of a cartoon look.
Who is the artist that did the artwork for PS2 2001 intro? That looked nice.
The Dreamcast version was better in literally every way except the backgrounds.
Nop Even the backgrounds look Netter on the DC
It wasn't better, the games play the EXACT same, neither had frames of animation missing, neither had remixed music (01 in Nests Hen uses the DC version, but actually allows OST or arranged music options, the firm but better choice over regular PS2 and DC versions), but the PS2 version actually improved the games artwork dramatically. Gone are the ugly ass character portraits, replaced with something far better looking.
But hey Sega fanboys are gonna fanboy no matter what.
@@mimundodedibujos3319 Those same backgrounds are also available on the PS2 version, you'd know that if you played the game, and explored the games options menu.
Is it so difficult to change the portraits in the Dreamcast version (which are the same of the Neo Geo version) for those of the PlayStation 2 version? Considering the big scene the Dreamcast has, I'm stranged nobody ever attempted this kind of modification yet.
The problem is not with the DC, but with this game
@@carlosaugusto9821 I know the problems of this game, they are actually inherited of the original Neo Geo version. It's just to appoint that with a simple hack, the Dreamcast version could easily benefit of the PS2 portraits enhancements at least.
what are you even talking about... you can't change what's programmed at first to how the other version did it
@@xm_heecka.laddder.job_mx5962 I guess you don't know what game hacking is. And trust me, replacing static images is among the easiest things that game hacking is able to do.
I owned the PS2 00/01 combo discs. Man that artwork was special.

SNK should've put the same effort into upgrading all of their NEO•GEO games such as *KOF 2001* like how they made *Real Bout Fatal Fury Special: Dominated Mind, KOF Dream Match 1999,* and *KOF '94 Re-bout.*
That DC version of KoF 98, dubbed Dream Match 99 is horrendous, adding load times that should not even be there, the DC was more capable than that. They did good with the music, which is rather seems to use a higher bitrate, sounds like they used the master tapes to record the music (like Street Fighter Alpha 3 on PS1). Once you play KoF 98 UM (the Japanese version is the best option as the blood is not censored out), Dream Match 99 just doesn't feel right. Thankfully SNK did better with 99 through 02.
This is kind of a weird one to judge between. Overall, I'd probably give PS2 the edge because of the way the backgrounds can vary, but otherwise it's almost a matter of preference in how you like your presentation. The way the Dreamcast embraces its pixels reminds me of the prettier KOF games from the late 1990s, while the smoothing and more 3D backgrounds of the PS2 version feel like a bridge into the way fighting games started to look into the 2000s. Great-playing and great-looking game, no matter which console you play it on.
Even if I have the original ps2 game, I didn't remember it had those changes, time to dig it up out of the vault and give it a whirl.

Andy is definitely smashing Mai lmfaooo
Going with the Dreamcast due to sharpness. The PS2 version looks a N64 game.
A trilha sonora desse jogo é muito foda.
I actually prefer the PS2 version, not just for the longer intro, and better art, I also like how some stages gradually, where it becomes less crowded until there's no spectators left to watch. That particular part is very much in line with the NESTS theme of secret battles that started in '99.
Kensou's dance was groovy!
Its looks like the PS2 attempted to smooth out jaggies, but then put a weird blurred filter over everything because the horse power wasn't their. The changing of the time of day was a nice feature though.
I believe those filters can be removed. I do have this game, but it's on the Nests Saga pack for PS2 that came out in Japan, which has the original Neo Geo ROMs of all 3 games, as well as all 3 DC games of the Nests era.
Can you make one from kof 2002?

It's really good though
Look at 2002 artwork and think again... 🤢
I dont understand why people hate this game gameplay is fun, art style is unique, it gave us a rather sad but still good ending to nests saga and music is not good as other games but i think it still fits considering the games concept.
@VCDECIDE this is not what I meant
In the US version of 2001 the 2D stages got a facelift to be better looking.
I've seen the Original Neo Geo levels and 3D levels
I was going to see the improved PS2 2D stages
Dreamcast FOREVER 😍😍😍
Being a huge sega fan, ive always loved the ill fated dreamcast. In a lot of ways, it was a much more powerful system. That and the ps2 simply could not compete with the dreamcast with arcade ports, I still wonder to this day what would have happened if sega had won that console war.
You forget that there was no way the Dreamcast would have been able to do Metal Gear Solid 2
lol no that is bullshit..out of Naomi games...ps2 can crash it. better Garou port, better metal slug 3 port, better Last Blade, better street fighter alpha 3. i can go on and on. ps2 got Virtua Fighters 4, a NAOMI 2 game that DC couldn't run, better Tekken 3 port, better 98 version, better 2002 version. DC can only dream to compete with ps2
@@bassram3337 None of that is true, though. When it came to 2D games such as Garou, Last Blade and Alpha 3, the Dreamcast was absolutely superior to the PS2. The PS2 was superior in the 3D department, but it also had the advantage of both coming out later, and actually lasting a lot longer. Developers had the luxury of time, and eventually learned to utilize the PS2's hardware to it's full potential. Dreamcast never had that opportunity and as such, never achieved the potential it could have. Regardless, when it came to arcade ports and 2D games, the Dreamcast had the PS2 beat, if only in that regard.
@@Arthurmagicknight no.. I know what I'm saying.. DC was only superior with its NAOMI ports.. Garou has alot of problems one of them is losing sound in later stages. SFA 3 was bad on DC even compared to Saturn version just because DC can't do any resulotion other than 480p. and since all Capcom and SNK fighters were 240p they become too pixelated on DC's 480p. and PS2 is the only console to get arcade perfect SFA3.. and since SNK doesn't care much about any console other than Sony consoles, half of their DC ports are ass ports
@@bassram3337 you can actually trigger 240p mode on most Dreamcast 2d capcom releases by holding down a button combination upon system startup
With the Dreamcast game I think that it might be emulated. As it looks like it is running the original Neo Geo version’s ISO.
And if it's true, DC port being faithful to arcade must be full of bugs like Bao's.
Easily see this song get popular on tiktok.
Adoro a trilha sonora desse kof, #k9999 forever :(
So no timer on dreamcast? What's going on here...

O PS2 tem a versão igual do Dreamcast, inclusive é o Nests collection icluindo o KOF99 e KOF 2000.
Dreamcast preserves the look of the original NeoGeo version, but ps2 added 3D effects to the backgrounds that look nice, but don't fit. Plus the ps2 versions (2000/01 & 2002/03) are edited. (at least USA versions are)
That's why you go the Japanese route for them, not only no censorship, but both games sold separately sell for far less than the double pack released in the US these days online.
I mean I some of their pics at the player select looks decent on ps2, but I really like the style on Dreamcast.
Also ps2 sprites look slightly smaller, ps2 intro too long.
I'm gonna say Dreamcast for me
PS2 and DC sprites are the same size, try again. That same DC port found it's way to PS2 in Japan anyway, in KoF Nests Hen.
I like Nona the best Art designer in KOF series, second HiroakI, Shinkiro the third.
Dreamcast arcade ports are always superior. Dreamcast was basically and arcade powerhouse. Similar to what neo geo aes was. Ps2 was a great console, the most sold console of all time but it was more centered in heavy games, rpg, platformers and stuff like thay. Dreamcast was all about pick up and play. 60 fps, simple but sharp graphics.
Olhe aquela Yuri... Santo Cristo...

4:34 Kim ON the PS2 Version Looks Very Detailed.
Dreamcast wins this round. I don't know what SNk were thinking by applying N64 like blur effects over the PS2 version. So technically the PS2 version is doing more, but artistically the Dreamcast version looks better with crispier graphics, and slightly larger characters. It also appears the DC version is animated better than the PS2 version after looking at the last minute of gameplay.
SNK usually gave gamers an option to turn those blur filters off, I know for sure you can do that with KoF XI, where the Sega/Sammy Atmoniswave original had blurry as hell sprites, but the filters could be disabled in the PS2 home port. Not sure why the uploader decided to keep the blur on, it's like they wanted more people to say the DC version was better.
@@Bloodreign1 Interesting, thanks for the info but I find odd SNK thought this blur effect looked good on PS2. Filtering low resolution sprites has never look good with MK Trilogy on N64 being the exception.
dreamcast is definitely good console and powerful in hardware compare to ps2, i still remeber how shock when I see DC first game , VF3 when DC launch.
The PS2 version is being displayed in too narrow of an aspect ratio so the artwork is blurred and slightly too thin.
I love that channel, the video is awesome, but it lacks movement through the stages. PS2 version is very beautiful, the prettiest for sure, fact which not showed enough here. Anyway, thanks and keep doing that nice job.
the only thing good about 01 is the select character music and some themes
Wow ,Dreamcast is most better in all details
6:01 PS2 version: 0/10 No Jiggle animation!!!!
This is clearly the NA standalone version of 2001. Now if we were comparing the DC to the NESTS Collection of 2K1, that’s a whole ‘nother ball game. I’d take the NESTS Collection over any version of 2K1 on any system...🤔
Play the Japanese PS2 versions, then get back to me on that animation.
@@Bloodreign1 I own it. You can play the original AES NEOGEO perfect port version (like the Dreamcast) or the ‘remixed’ version with 3D backgrounds and night/day stages. The animation/frames are arcade perfect on both versions. 😳
You might wanna try...I don’t know, playing it?...before talking reckless about something. Just a suggestion...🤔
Jisses, the blurrines from the ps2 is awful, really bad conversion.
Do all the ps2 2d fighting games from snk suffer the same fate on the ps2? Or are there any good conversions?
Yes, there are good conversions. Later ports on the PS2 still can have that nasty blurrines, but it was as an option, and almost all of them have that option disabled by default, thankfully. In general, SNK PS2 ports would get much better later on, being pretty faithful to their original versions and even adding some extras (like 3d stages or exclusive characters).
Love the ps2 version! First time seeing it but I love the background blur effect that that gives the game a unique focus on the fighters. I also like some of the other graphical enhancements to some of the levels
As artes do kof2001 dreamcast me lembram a do real bout 2
I think that the console ports impoved on the shitty AES release. Also PS2 improves presentation slightly, but it's up to preference like the 3D backgrounds of Dream Match 99 or Evolution.
I hate what they did with K' on his PS2 portrait..
