The world was more than ready, the world just didn't like getting burned by SEGA with the 32x and Saturn. Hence why the PS2 that only came out 4 months later turned into a juggernaut.
Thank you for having the PS1 audio coming from the left channel & Dreamcast audio coming from the Right. Such an amazing little touch, took me a minute or 2 to realise, you must have put so much work into this!
Thank you so much for checking this out and for the kind words:) This video in particular did take quite a bit of time but seeing comments like yours really makes it worth the time it took.
@@evshrug I appreciate you saying that. I've had people literally cuss me out for splitting the audio in unhinged rants lol. So it's great to hear feedback like this:)

This is one of my favorite comparisons since it’s cross-generational. I love how many titles we have to demonstrate how developers had to approach the unique hardware of each console, and as a lover of both of these, I really enjoy seeing them side by side. Thank you so much for your channel and all your work
Thank you so much for the kind words and for checking this out:) I'm fascinated too by how things change from one generation to the next and this is one of those really interesting ones as both consoles were commercially relevant at the same time even if not for a super long time.
@@RetroComparisons No thanks needed! Yes, the commercial relevance is the neatest factor here. Like I said, I have a love for both consoles, and it's thanks to the PS1's unrivaled ubiquity during the era paired with the Dreamcast's lack thereof that we saw this profound overlap. VG history is one of my favorite things, and I'm sure you can appreciate that too, haha.
I sincerely miss Dreamcast. It was a major part of my childhood gaming experience. I always compared it to arcade graphics but at home. Playing games like HydroThunder and crazy taxi at my friends place was SURREAL
As a kid I always dreamed of having an arcade cabinet at home. The Dreamcast was the first console to truly feel like it was on par with arcade graphics and was mind blowing.
@@suiken3149 Very true but it's not necessarily being about what's a fair comparison in terms of one beating the other but more about the historical context of the improvements from one gen to the next.

Games on DREAMCAST are really improved. 60FPS and more detailed colors and textures are really making a difference. In the years of release, that could be less noted. Because of the old tube TVs. Now with high resolution, HDR, and more color capable tvs, monitors, hardware and stream speed and quality, this is really a huge gap between PS1 and DREAMCAST.
Very well said. It still looked better at the time but most people weren't getting the best signal out of either system back then. I'd guess that the overwhelming majority of people were using composite cables for both in the 90s/early 00s. That VGA output on the Dreamcast is a thing of beauty and still looks great to this day on modern TVs.
@@tttyyy949 but Sega Saturn is already a more powerful console than ps1, maybe cuz is hard to programming to that most devs released their games on Dreamcast Wich is easy pezy lemon squeazy, most of ps1 games has versions on ps2 that are the same released on PC, like tony hawk 3 too, so, I think is difficult problem is nice to see those comparisons anyway
considering that yeah . sadly it looks like poop half of time . but damn tony hawk pro skater was very well optimized on ps 1 . these versions are not much diferent
of course. still there is nothing here that really looks good. All the games on DC here looks very low poly, dated and some even plain ugly. Which is not odd as its pure PS1 ports with little to no effort to improve the games apart from them running in higer rez- framerate and textures. the rest is just same PS1 assets. an insult to the DC
First off it's quite the dedication to put together this video so good job. My takeaway having owned both of these devices when they were released the PlayStation holds up well against the more powerful and much later released Dreamcast on many titles. I spent so much money back in these days chasing the most powerful gaming system, including the super expensive 3DO, SegaCD, TurboGrafx 16, and nearly purchased the Neo•Geo as well but the games were INSANELY expensive at around $200 USD per. Hell I purchased the N64 just to play Mario64, $200 to play one game...I had it bad 😂
I've heard of the "PC Master Race" on Reddit but you were a console master race back then lol! I think you made a wise choice not getting the AES as I don't think that console was worth it unless you're really into fighting games. It's funny you mention the Turbografx because I think that's the system most close to the Dreamcast in a historical sense. When the PC Engine came out in '87 it was way more graphically advanced than its main competition of the SMS & NES but then got stuck competing against the next gen of consoles not too long after that. Thanks for checking this out and for the kind words:)
The 640x480 resolution of the Dreamcast actually makes a nice difference with the 2d games especially in VNs/RPGs. Most of these titles have nice differences and good graphical improvements. Straight PS1 ports without enhancements are ugly on Dreamcast and you can really tell what devs had the budget/time to make their ports shine.
The Dreamcast had such a crisp output and that resolution did suit these games well. That was one of the downfalls though like you mentioned when it was nothing more than an upscaled port of a PS1 game.
Yeah, people complain about games getting remastered over and over these days, but these straight up ports were basically the same thing, just higher res versions of older games and if we were lucky better frame rates (although the vast majority still are locked at 30fps) I feel like this ended up hurting to some degree since I'm sure many people were expecting a more noticeable jump in graphics. The higher resolution wasn't even that big of a deal back then due to most people still playing on CRTs via composite.
@@RetrOrigin wtf I noticed right away when I got a ps2 that the graphics looked ugly on CRT compared to how Dreamcast, Xbox, and most of the time Gamecube looked on CRT.People who played more than Playstation were big on graphics back than. Those games were not remastered it just that playstion came out with weaker hardware twice.
@@Danakedgamer0523 I can’t remember the beeps. Maybe back then but I haven’t actually taken it back out the box in years. I need to get an HDMI converter for it to connect to modern devices. Any recommendations for the cable?
Clearly, a lot of developers who made PS1 games thought, "Hey, we can basically dump our PlayStation game onto Dreamcast, unchanged, and apply antialiasing to the polygon textures! Done and done!"
Funny enough for some of these ports like Resident Evil i even prefer to play the PS1 version since the dithering effect of the console mesh better with the prerender backgrounds.
Although PSX can be considered a 5th gen console, the Dreamcast probably falls in between 5th and 6th as it was released in 1998 and was pre GPU (hardware T&L) era. Everything was still mostly calculated in the CPU but used the graphics chip for rendering. In that respect a Playstation to Dreamcast conaprison isnt all that unfair.
@@nng1979 I think it would be better to compared late PS1 titles with 90s Dreamcast games, were i think PS1 doesnt have anything to envy or even surprass some early DC titles.
Some of the remasters are really kickass but I don't like it when 2D pixel art is changed or replaced. Simply displaying a lot of these old 240p games in 480p is already a mindblowing upgrade. That said, I only saw a handful of games where Dreamcast wasn't superior. Its specialty was high resolution(for the time) 2D and damn did it ever do that well. I love Dreamcast because of its unique niche as an inter-generational console. It's not really 5th gen and not really 6th gen either. It has a ton of games from both and pretty much every release it got was very polished. It wasn't quite as powerful as 6th gen consoles but it had a very simple architecture that was easy to work with. Devs in general seem to have had an easier time squeezing more power out of Dreamcast. For that reason and others, the OG Xbox is sometimes considered its immediate successor. Sega actually had a hand in designing the Xbox. Also, for such a short-lived console it has a really massive library. Such a shame it didn't do better in the US. It had the power to run a lot of later 6th gen titles okay and still had untapped potential. The fact that a lot of really important Dreamcast releases never had an English translation really sucks. Like Mobile Suit Gundam federation vs Zeon DX. The Gamecube was screwed in a very similar way.
Very well said! The Dreamcast really is weird with its timing because it essentially competed with two different generations in its short life. It reminds me a bit of the PC Engine that was made to compete with the NES but within a few years was competing with the Genesis & SNES.
This is such praise for the PS1. Comparing it to a next gen console and still holds up pretty well. Arguably for some of these games the rough graphic style aged really well on PS1 , blends elements well. While the Dreamcast has this "too clean" look. And some games just looks better on PS1? Like Test Drive V-Rally.
It really just goes to show that Dreamcast was ahead of its time. I remember when my brother and I had this beast growing up. Legendary console. I wish Sega would step back in the console wars again and bring us a Dreamcast 2. Would be amazing as hell!
It's crazy how lazy some of the ports for the Dreamcast were. Increased display resolution and texture resolution were the only things done on many of those. The Dreamcast could do about 10x the polygons that the PS1 could but devs didn't feel like remaking the models so you still got blocky characters that actually kind of looked worse because they were much clearer at the higher resolution.
It was rather such ports or nothing. Dreamcast user base was rather small and publishers were only doing these ports, because how simple they were. Dreamcast had so much power compared to PS1 that you could take C code of PS1 game and just rewrite API calls to what Dreamcast had. Such games would run at 640x480 with larger draw distance and sometimes better textures, without any hardware specific optimizations. These ports were also made for PC and while GPUs back then were already more powerful to what Dreamcast had, there was a huge gap between low-end and high-end PCs. Such ports could run at PS1 resolution with PS1 graphics on low-end hardware, often in software without 3D acceleration or at 1280x1024 at 100 FPS on high-end GPUs paired in SLI. For some reason there's very few Dreamcast-like games on PC. Games quickly shifted from PS1 ports to PS2 ports. At one moment games required 233 MHz CPU with GPU and few months later it was like 700 MHz minimum, when games started targeting PS2, Gamecube and Xbox.
It's interesting seeing how some of the games were pretty much just phoned in for the Dreamcast port by simply running it at higher resolution and framerate without any real asset changes and then others you can really see the big generational difference in capabilities with not just the res and framerate but also poly counts/ texture details, and background details and draw distance. This selection also showcases just how well optimized PS1 was at the end of its generation with some of the titles still looking and running pretty decent next to the DC port even thought its at lower settings. The one game I really notice PS1 had problems on was Shadow Man with massive framerate drops and quite distorted visuals.

Wow, you really did compare all games, even the ones nobody cares about... Great work! My favourite change is in Soul Reaver, Raziel's model is really a huge upgrade
Thanks for checking this out! Yeah there were a ton of games that I couldn't wait to get through like the visual novels. Soul Reaver looks fantastic on the Dreamcast for sure.
Interesting comparison, there is a lot of overlap, and I am quite impressed with how the Ps1games did hold up, in spite games being in an older hardware, since the Dreamcast in theory is on the PS2 league, and the Saturn is the Ps1 equivalent.
It's cause games were still being made with the PS1 in mind first and ported to DC afterwards. So the games were pushing the PS1 pretty hard, but the DC not so much. Because of the DC's 2.5 year lifespan I'd argue it never reached its full potential. Even in a few years the jump in quality from Sonic Adventure to Adventure 2 was immense. Imagine what devs could've squeezed out had the system lasted til 2005 or 2006.
@@RetroComparisons A safe guess would probably be at least some of the stuff we ended up getting put on the Xbox. Xbox games like GunValkyrie and ToeJam & Earl 3 were originally planned for the Dreamcast. Stuff like Shenmue 2, Space Channel 5: Part 2, and Rez would've gotten a proper North American release on DC instead of on the Xbox/PS2 respectively.
@@vitamind.d.fishinsea8570 these ports beside some exceptions were very lazy and pushed quickly to the market. If you compare the best dc and ps the power gap is obvious.
So many lazy ports :( Too bad, the Dreamcast was much more capable than some of these ports from lazy devs. Thanks for the video, your work is amazing!
Thanks so much for checking this out and for the kind words:) Yeah a lot of these are not the Dreamcast's best showing. I've noticed that theme a lot though with these cross-generational ports on many systems like on the SNES vs PS1 video or even with Sega CD ports of Genesis games.
29:00 Fitting that the Dreamcast version of Soul Reaver is to this day the definitive one - you spend the entire game feeding a mirrored Dreamcast logo in the bottom right of the screen on all versions of the game.
Nice demonstration of the power of the Dreamcast. In some rare occasions tho, the blurrier graphics of the Playstation contributes to the ambiance of the game (thinking mostly about Resident Evil 2 and 3).
Those RE games are a great example of what can go wrong with these ports. For the Dreamcast some of it higher resolution but the backgrounds aren't so it's this weird blend. The more blurry graphics of the PS1 do give it that more unsettling feel too.
Did you use the same av output for both consoles? I mean composite for both ? because I think you used HDMI converter for DC and regular composite for PS, am I correct?
These did use different methods. The PS1 is using a SCART cable through the OSSC while the Dreamcast is using the DCHDMI mod to tap into the VGA output and it's being upscaled through that.
@@RetroComparisons No offence but this makes no sense. 1/ your PS1 cable isn't great quality or your capture card or OBS is doing a terrible job, I'm running PS1 through RGB and OSSC and it's way sharper than that. 2/ the DCHDMI does not tap into VGA, it takes the signal directly as digital signal and keeps them digital the entire way. VGA is RGBHV with is analog. So, in your case, PS1 goes through ADC (Analog to Digital Conversion) and your DC is pure digital throughout. A good, fully shielded RGB (RGsB, RGBS or even RGBs) cable will look VERY close to a digital output when going through a correctly set up high quality ADC device such as the OSSC. If you're curious, look into a DC block diagram, you'll see, the VGA is being generated by the Digital Encoder (a DAC) whereas the HDMi mods get their video directly from the graphic chip. Within a 1080p container you can fit both the PS1 in 2x scaling and the Dreamcast in 1x. Looks like that's what you've been doing. However, falling short of integer scaling will create a mess and I believe that it might be the reason why your PS1 output looks so soft here. It might not be perfectly scaled to 2x in OBS or equivalent.
Thanks for this! I've been using Redream a fair bit lately, and have been wondering about PS1 ports. I know of a few, but not of all of them. This is exceedingly useful!

Whew...another huge console vs console library comparison. I saw it pop up on my notifications just as I was going to call it a night, but I wanted to say that we appreciate the time you put in to put these together, Bill. I'll have to sift through it when I have more time. I know from my experience and your DC vs N64 vs PSX videos that the DC usually wins the comparisions between these two but that sometimes the PSX puts up a surprisingly good fight and/or sometimes the DC is just a higher-res PS1 port with no real benefits beyond clarity and sometimes better performance (and sometimes worse controls). It'll be nice to have all of these in one spot though.
Thanks so much my friend for your support and kind words! The PS1 did put up a good fight in a lot of these. There's a ton that weren't in the series I was doing as there's about 50 - 60 Japanese only games (mostly visual novels) and those of course looked pretty good unsurprisingly. There were a few others too that I somehow missed like Moho which turned out to be a very fun game. I hadn't quite finished the series before calling it off due to my N64 issues and some of those were good too. Of course there were others that were crap like Ultimate Fighting Championship where I spent over 30 minutes to get 30 seconds of footage without my fighter tapping out in the first 5 seconds:/ Anywho, go get some sleep lol! I need to do the same.
What these kind of vídeos misses a lot is using a proper display (monitor or TV of that era) a lot of these graphics use the limitations of that time to their advantage and It means a lot.
this whole 3D style of Dreamcast is very good looking to my eye and I love it. all these early polygon systems like the Dreamcast, the SEGA model 2, SEGA model 3, atomiswave, naomi arcade system. don’t know why but I just love the style.
This was pretty nostalgic, there was so many visual novels that I grew up playing, many I haven't seen since I was a kid, it was a trip through memory lane, and it was also very cool to see how the Dreamcast looked so much better when devs really utilized all its power, it was truly next gen before the PS2.
they realy optize thps on psx thats for sure . cant say same about some later psx releases that looks 2 x better on dreamcast and 60 fps . look at td 6 V rally . looks amazing on dreamcast . looks poop on ps 1 lol
Most of the titles on DC were lazy ports. Look at Test Drive Le Mans if devs had the time and budget for two different gen hardware. Makes you wonder if having to cater to the lower powered consoles in today's mixed-power gen holds back current consoles and PC games.
Wasn't Dreamcast a PS2 comparison? I'm curious why you're comparing it against a PS1, or not comparing PS2 vs PS1 instead to see the differences between generations. Though maybe those videos were done enough already?
I do want to eventually do a PS1 vs PS2 and a DC vs PS2 comparison at some point. This one in particular fascinated me because there were so many PS1 & N64 games that came out at the same time as the DC and technically competed more years with those consoles than its contemporary 6th gen consoles.
In cases where the game is 3D models over 2D backgrounds, the increased texture resolution and and model detail actually works to the Dreamcast's detriment, as the models and backgrounds are no longer of the same visual fidelity. because while they could upscale the 3D stuff, the 2D assets were locked at their original resolution, as they had no way of re-rendering those at higher ones.
That certainly was one of the downfalls of having the upscaled games without completely re-hauling everything. When that wasn't the case though that VGA output of the Dreamcast really shined.
@@RetroComparisons VGA wasn't really the game changer people misremember it as. You had to buy it separately, and If you had a VGA monitor back in the day, you were probably a PC gamer. Most everyone else was playing Dreamcast on a RF-adaptor or composite cables. Its like the broadband internet adapter. Most people around the world in 1999/2000 were still stuck using a dodgy dialup connection, so internet play was still just a pipe dream.
@@SomeOrangeCat Very true but it did really help future proof the console in the same way that the SMS/Genesis were with native RGB output. Most people at least in North America were playing those with RF or composite too but they look fantastic these days without any mods going through an upscaler.
Wow i never realized there was such a massive jump between these systems….was this captured on emulation tho? It definitely seems like there is some extra resolution bumps going on here that weren’t standard on the systems
The PS1 is mostly real hardware going through the OSSC being upscaled, though at the time I didn't have a great way of capturing 480i games so those few games are emulated. All of the DC games are real hardware going through the DCHDMI mod to tap into the VGA output and upscale it.
It's no surprise at allm because of the selective bias that often is forgotten: Games existing on multiple systems that have been around before the stronger system have first been made and optimized for the older one and then where ported to the newer system later. This nearly always means that the newer system won't even be remotely used to it's full potential. For comparing the hardwares' capabilities you would need to check the exclusive game son the later one, or some specifically selected where you know before, that they had been optimized more than to the bare minimum for the later conversion :) This video shows that nearly all these games are just using a higher resolution on the Dreamcast and most have higher fps,. because these are the two things that come mostly automatically by running them on the newer hardware. But you usually won't find crisper textures, higher polygon count more more objects or particles on screen in these conversion. Of couorse the Playstation 1 still was a good system for it's time, maybe the most advaned console ever relative to it's contemporary situation.
Hmm that's strange. With the exception of a few PS1 480i games everything is running off of real hardware. They are running off of optical drive emulators though so that may cause a difference depending on the read speed of the hard drives.
I honestly believe that the Dreamcast is the most overlooked and tragic game system EVER MADE, the sheer power and ability of the system, coupled with the revolutionary online capabilities and the VMU being it's own whole AMAZING thing just makes me cry at night, I remember FINALLY saving up enough as a kid to buy one used off my buddy only to find out that Sega was abandoning the system all together and that no NEW games would come out for it, but MAN, such a tragic case, the raw POWER of it is impressive even to this day!!!!...
Both are being upscaled but in different ways. The PS1 is using a scart cable being upscaled through the OSSC. The Dreamcast is using the DCHDMI mod to get the VGA signal and upscale it.
@@taz_artista Yeah that DCHDMI mod in particular is incredible and it even offers a HQ2X mode to enhance the graphics though I don't use that feature for the channel.
@@taz_artistathat was real life in the 90s when you had VGA on the Dreamcast, at 480p it looked quite a lot better than even the PS2 with it's predominantly 480i library.
I think the most jarring transition in the video is from Wacky Races to the Disney kart game. The former looks an entire generation ahead of the PS1 version, with a beautiful cel-shaded look and pretty much completely different assets... and then Magical Racing Tour just looks like the PS1 version running at 2x resolution. It's a shame that many developers treated the Dreamcast as an afterthought and did the bare minimum. Still, better than not supporting it at all like EA I suppose...

If you are a fighting game player & loved fighting games from this era, Dreamcast wins hands down vs Playstation. Besides that, having more horse power, disc space and higher resolution meant less concessions to be made. Hell, just frame rate being more consistent is a large improvement.

Agreed; I don't completely understand the need for a side-by-side of non-competing consoles. It would have made way more sense to have a side-by-side of PS1 vs Saturn, those we're actually same gen competing consoles. DS was supposed to be a a direct competitor to PS2; and had they waited for the PS2 to launch they actually may have made some headway against Sony. The PS2 stumble hard out of the gate with all the full screen antialiasing issues; when DS had none of those issues.

Kind of a shame since the Dreamcast could’ve actually put up a good fight against the PS2 if it received a greater number of higher-quality games rather than souped-up PS1 games.

Even straight ports were better than their PS1 counterparts with higher frame rates, lack of affine texture warping and greater draw distances
@@WWammyysoul reaver 60fps Dreamcast
Yeah, people complain about games getting remastered over and over these days, but these straight up ports were basically the same thing, just higher res versions of older games and if we were lucky better frame rates (although the vast majority still are locked at 30fps)
I feel like this ended up hurting to some degree since I'm sure many people were expecting a more noticeable jump in graphics. The higher resolution wasn't even that big of a deal back then due to most people still playing on CRTs via composite.

Clearly, a lot of developers who made PS1 games thought, "Hey, we can basically dump our PlayStation game onto Dreamcast, unchanged, and apply antialiasing to the polygon textures! Done and done!"
Haha yeah that pretty much sums up the majority of these ports.
it seems more that the ps1 ports are capped DC versions. look how the dream cast games are fluid as hell
6:09 - What is that jagged yellow outline around the sprites in the Dreamcast version of Capcom vs SNK?
20:00 we can see dreamcast is better than PS1, textures are better and smoke is more realistic and maybe better frame rate.

It reminds me a bit of the PC Engine that was made to compete with the NES but within a few years was competing with the Genesis & SNES.
it was killed by dvd format which sony monopilized . console itself was good . better then ps 2 in my opinion
loved your take on this subject, it’s so well thought out!
Thanks so much for checking this out!
1:02:00 Star Wars Episode I: Jedi Power Battles comparison

Interesting comparison, there is a lot of overlap, and I am quite impressed with how the Ps1games did hold up, in spite games being in an older hardware, since the Dreamcast in theory is on the PS2 league, and the Saturn is the Ps1 equivalent.
I couldn't believe how many games there were that were ported on both consoles. The timing of the DC was weird, it was almost like a PS1 Pro.
@@VexAcer I'd love to see what was coming out on the system had it lasted until around 05. I think we missed out on some great Sega titles.

@@RetroComparisons exactly. in general no of these games is any showcase of the power of DC

The developers took a different approach over making a sub par port, love it!
I feel the same way. It seems to hold up better than a lot of other 3D games from the era, especially when compared to something like the N64.
This was pretty nostalgic, there was so many visual novels that I grew up playing, many I haven't seen since I was a kid, it was a trip through memory lane, and it was also very cool to see how the Dreamcast looked so much better when devs really utilized all its power, it was truly next gen before the PS2.
The dream cast would kick ass today if somebody was making games for it
Why develop for the dreamcast when you can develop for the PS2 or xbox classic?
Thank you so mucn for this upload video.... Appreciated
Thanks so much for checking this out:)
Taking into consideration that we compare different GENs, PS showacase here is pretty impressive ... what a beast machine, PSX is. ♥
they realy optize thps on psx thats for sure . cant say same about some later psx releases that looks 2 x better on dreamcast and 60 fps . look at td 6 V rally . looks amazing on dreamcast . looks poop on ps 1 lol
Hell yes. That's clearly visible on the Resident Evil ports.
@@SomeOrangeCatYeah but people play with VGA today and, well would you look at that, it looks so much better than rf/rca.
@@RetroComparisons wow the Dreamcast stuff blows me away. Definitely one of the most underrated consoles ever!
@@JReybabay Same here, I can't believe how good it looks and the games are fantastic.
I’m surprised how much the PS1 keeps doing a good job versus the Dreamcast. Especially knowing the difference of power between them.
I was surprised too. I think the fact that it has a really clean output makes a huge difference too in terms of visual quality.
@@RetroComparisonsif ps1 didn't have wobbly graphics it would look nearly the same
It's no surprise at allm because of the selective bias that often is forgotten: Games existing on multiple systems that have been around before the stronger system have first been made and optimized for the older one and then where ported to the newer system later. This nearly always means that the newer system won't even be remotely used to it's full potential. For comparing the hardwares' capabilities you would need to check the exclusive game son the later one, or some specifically selected where you know before, that they had been optimized more than to the bare minimum for the later conversion :)
This video shows that nearly all these games are just using a higher resolution on the Dreamcast and most have higher fps,. because these are the two things that come mostly automatically by running them on the newer hardware. But you usually won't find crisper textures, higher polygon count more more objects or particles on screen in these conversion. Of couorse the Playstation 1 still was a good system for it's time, maybe the most advaned console ever relative to it's contemporary situation.
I don remember those freezes when the camara is switching in Resident Evil 3. Could it be a version or emulator issue?.
Hmm that's strange. With the exception of a few PS1 480i games everything is running off of real hardware. They are running off of optical drive emulators though so that may cause a difference depending on the read speed of the hard drives.
The freezes are real on original hardware. Happens on Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3 on all consoles (PS1, Saturn and Dreamcast).
@@TalesBarros yep, even happens on the N64 with the expansion pak inserted.
That is the sharp 6800x or the pc98
Fun Fact: Some Dreamcast versions are direct ports from the PC. Its full compatibility with Windows made porting from there much easier.
look at power of ps1, that was real good hardware
I had both versions of Soul Reaver, what an upgrade!
Dreamcast is basically a PS1 with all games remastered 😂
your dreamcast gameplay is emulated and upscaled though right? Can you run it native for comparison?
Both are being upscaled but in different ways. The PS1 is using a scart cable being upscaled through the OSSC. The Dreamcast is using the DCHDMI mod to get the VGA signal and upscale it.
@@RetroComparisonsah I see. makes quite the difference in output

I was just watching this video, so seriously. Thanks for the comic relief! XD
Lol thanks for checking this out:) It's always fun to run someone over in a game like that.
Dreamcast once again proves it is the most underrated game console of all time.
Dreamcast was already powerful more like a Ps2 than a P1. Another GEN in advance.
I love SEGA
what final fantasy 7 and 8 would have looked like on dreamcast?
I bet those would have looked incredible!
Pre-rendered backgrounds look better than todays games.
It does look nice, but stop that cap. No game back then looks better than what is being produced nowadays.

Hi great video, I loved the Dreamcast
Thanks so much for watching! The Dreamcast is such an incredible console.
If you are a fighting game player & loved fighting games from this era, Dreamcast wins hands down vs Playstation. They played exactly the same as their arcade counter parts without cutting any animation frames and sometimes had online play. Besides that, having more horse power, disc space and higher resolution meant less concessions to be made. Hell, just frame rate being more consistent is a large improvement.

I was surprised too. The PS1 cleans up really well using Scart/Component cables through an upscaler and it really pops.

1:02:00 In star wars jedi power battles at level 1 you can break things in the ps1, curiously in the dreamcast you cannot
Ps1 wins for grittiness and lighting in most of the horror games. The cleaned up graphics almost did a diservice to some these games. Still loved the Dreamcast though.
Was the difference that much? Is the right footage emulation? It looks like it's 720p
The Dreamcast is mostly 480p (with a few 480i games) being upscaled to 1080p via the DCHDMI mod. It outputs amazing quality and I can't recommend that enough to anyone who wants to use original hardware on modern TVs.
Some of these comments are from viewers who clearly aren't gamers. Dreamcast was released 4 years later and they wonder why DC looks better. 😂 If anything, this video shows just how good the PS1 was for it's time.
Man, Dreamcast was the shizz back in the day. There was this game that you got with the console, with a car with guns and shield, rockets and missles, Reddog or something, we used to play that splitscreen until our eyes bled. Twas Awesome.
I would say, that Dreamcast was between PS and PS2, because of those graphics and better details. I do have one and it's brilliant to play on a old CRT monitor ✨ Long live the Dream... 🌀

Much in the same way the PS2 held the Wii back. Look at how great games with the Wii made in mind looked, when compared to quick and dirty PS2 ports.
@@SomeOrangeCat not really the Wii was barely more powerful than a GameCube so even if the PS2 was holding it back it wouldn't be by much
The Xbox 360 came out a full year before the Wii and it certainly wasn't being held back by the PS2.
The only thing holding the Wii back was it's lack of power that's why many 3rd party games didn't come to the Wii so developers had to get creative and make dumb casual games that were suited for it's motion controls

Dino Crisis2 is available on PSX & PC REX HD (still not complete) + Classic REBIRTH patches
The problem with the Dreamcast is that there are not that many games that show the true potential it actually had since most of the games on this platform are just straight ports of the PS1 games but a bit more refined when it comes to graphics and in some cases, even content. Kind of a shame since the Dreamcast could’ve actually put up a good fight against the PS2 if it received a greater number of higher-quality games rather than souped-up PS1 games.
