      Yeah the graphics were godly, interface was nice and clean (still think dc has the all time greatest boot up screen) but damn that controller was awful. Terrible d pad, rock hard face buttons and no built in rumble.

      @@eponymous7910 The lack of rumble i can let slide because at least you could install a rumble pack (which made it cool imo) What i can't forgive is making such a fansatically comfortable controller,and only giving it one analogue stick. Wtf were they thinking? Even PS1 had 2 analogue sticks. Apart from that,the Dreamcast gave some of the best gaming memories of my life. I miss it dearly :(

    Do I just wear rose tinted glasses, or did games had more variety and creativity wih the past console generations? I mean, just look at the dreamcast games. So different and interesting. And what they tried to achieve with much weaker hardware vs today. Not only graphicaly, but gameplay wise. New games frome the big gaming companies are not bad... but stale. Just following the expected formula for a profitable game. Rarely trying to take any risks, to make something new and creative. Or isn't pioneering new gameplay ideas necessary anymore?

    • @thegamelounge659
      @thegamelounge659  3 месяца назад +5

      No you are 100% correct, the issue is that development costs mean that risks are too high. Not only that but recurring revenue in games is far more lucrative. So a perfectly formed 15 hour campaign or even racing game just doesn’t make the cut. If a standalone game sells.
      Another less obvious ideas I have is that there is almost too much choice now. When everything went through standardised platforms and hardware there were less choices to make and a lot of the filtering in games was done for you. Now there are literally thousands of games launching all the time. People tend to simply gravitate to what they know. I guess liken it to Netflix, sometimes so much to choose from you spend too much time browsing 😂

    I discovered Metropolis Street Racer last year. It truly is a special game no matter what angle you look at it from. Some of those Tokyo and San Francisco track layouts are breathtaking. I only wish they were as generous with the difficulty as they were with the love that went into the environments. Not only is MSR hard from the start, it's also possible to lose progress when you have to gamble your Kudos to grind to the next level. There's still hundreds of track layouts that I haven't seen.

    Soul Calibur fue esencialmente el juego que me vendió la Dreamcast. Mi primer contacto fue en un canal francés (desde España pero el cable de pago aqui era canal+ francesa) enteramente de videojuegos 24/7 lo cual para la época era una pasada porque lo normal era merendar prensa escrita 😂 y como mucho algún programa semanal de 30 minutos de videojuegos que eran una rareza.
    Cuando vi Soul Calibur se me bajaron los pantalones al suelo 😂. Recordamos para los no boomers, en esa época podía salir una videoconsola o juego uno o dos años antes de llegar a tu territorio (sobretodo si eras de Europa) Japón solía ser la salida, después Usa y luego Europa. Fue también donde vi Shenmue correr. Fue un impacto, como explicarlo si veo Metal Gear Solid un juego que estaba por llegar aún! Y me llamo muchísimo la atención, o sea quedo anotado (lo que hoy se llama hype) imaginar luego ver Soul Calibur, era como dos o tres generaciones por delante gráficamente. Como de bueno es, que aún hoy día sigue siendo digno de ver y jugar.

      @@ThoughtformsOfTheSubconsciousM Emulation per se does not suck; you have limits, if you push limits you end up with incorrect results. The rule of thumb is that emulation is good at hardware when you can exceed the original specs by 20-30x to get enough speed and headroom to account for bad programming and not perfect performance optimizations.
      FPGA is not perfect either; you need to write code to make FPGA "devices"; which has the same exact issues of emulators, as you need powerful devices with enough logic cells to construct the hardware you want to replicate; and you need people writing performant logic code

    Great video for technical reasons, but speak for yourself at 12:32. Imo they made the hunting and shooting worse in adventure 2. The shooting in 2 is much slower, more clunky and drags in places compared to Gamma's. Knuckles/Rouge's moves and feel is better than 1, but the one at a time radar artificially lengthens playtime. Even the mostly great speed sections are more closed off, ditched the euphoric spin dash jump and have less shortcuts. I'd rather play any big or amy level more than most of 2's shooting levels.

    I had a Dreamcast back then too and was very proud of this console. I always thought the Dreamcast was more powerful than a PS2. Of course the graphics on the Dreamcast were always very sharp and had good anti-aliasing and the colors looked great. Despite that you have to admit that you could see from games like GT 3-4 that the PS2 was a crazy polygon machine. This game would never have been possible on the Dreamcast. Sega GT was an attempt to compete. Unfortunately the game was washed out, the curves were angular and it looked like a better N64 game. You often got the impression that a lot of Dreamcast games were actually PS One games with anti-aliasing and higher resolution. Of course there are other examples like Dead or Alive 2 or Soul Calibur. But they only looked better because of the better anti-aliasing and sharper image.

    • @litjellyfish
      @litjellyfish 3 месяца назад

      @@thegamelounge659 disc storage capacity is not such a big problem. I am sure it would be possible to squeeze it in. As many asset needed to be downscale for a decent DC port = naturally takes less space.
      It’s more down to the streaming and memory management itself. Remember that PS2 had quite a lot more memory that DC. Also if we compare with headhunter it loads all level directly so no streaming. Also the traffic as said in Headhunter is basically just a static traffic system where there is a lot more going on in the PS2 version.
      Also those things eats up the CPU time and DC don’t have the luxury of a dedicated unit for this at it needs to handle game logic and T&L on the same CPU = less power for T&L = less amount of polygons.

      I think you are right. Mini consoles were in fashion a few years ago but we haven’t seen one in a while. The reason SEGA didn’t a few years back was the cost. To have hardware powerful enough to emulate as well as develop and emulator & frontend software. Then packaging, controllers etc. At the time they thought it wouldn’t sell because it would be a $200 machine all in and they didn’t believe it would sell. Despite people’s love for the DC it only sold ~10m. So I guess that’s why historically SEGA focused on Genesis/MD. I’m surprised they never released a Master System mini console thiugh

    Le Mans is 60fps btw. I remember playing it on a tiny 19" tv and it was as smooth as butter. Phantasy Star Online v.2 was my first EVER gaming experience online. 20:28 i walked into a brand new video game store with my brother in my city on 11/22/1999 and saw a Dreamcast with Hydro Thunder and got to play that and Soul Calibur, and was soooo blown away we immediately went home and pooled out money and bought the Dreamcast that same day!

    My Favourite: 1) Soul Calibur - The best version was on the Dreamcast: 2) Metropolis Street Racer - One of the finest Racers ever that defined what a racing game should be. "It's not about how fast you drive, but about how you drive fast": 3) Shenmue 1 and 2 - Just Simply Awesome: 4) Ready 2 Rumble - A highly playable and incredibly fun game to play: 5) Virua Tennis - Perhaps one of the best tennis games ever made: 6) F355 Ferrari Challenge - One of the purest racers to ever grace a video games console. Yes, it was hard, but it matured into a fine racer with experience and practice.

      Thanks for the reply, I think Ready 2 Rumble in particular doesn’t get the credit it deserves. Ok it may not have the most depth but as you say it’s a huge amount of fun. Especially in multiplayer

    The Dreamcast and Sega in general had such a unique vibe to its games and hardware. Very airy, laid-back and dare I say dreamy? Even if I don't have the time to play much these days I still listen to the soundtracks like the overworld music from Shenmue just when you leave the dojo and explore the streets. Instantly takes me back 20+ years.

    • @thegamelounge659
      @thegamelounge659  Месяц назад +1

      Yes there was a unique premium feel to everything back then. It felt ‘created’ not just manufactured. I always say the fact SEGA wasn’t so focused on the business decisions was part of why it was so creative

      @@thegamelounge659 That's true, their marketing descisions always seemed a bit... let's say "experimental". There's this special edition with the face of their managing director on the packaging. I mean, I love those kind of things but for the majority this probably was too crazy - at least for a game console.

    19:05 Why your record of Shenmue runs smoothly? I finished Shenmue 2 in my SEGA Dreamcast in 2001 or 2002 but it never ran this smooth!

    • @thegamelounge659

    I remember buying the Dreamcast knowing almost nothing about the console. The first game I booted up was Virtua Fighter and I felt so cheated. Was this the best the console was capable of? The next game was Soul Calibur and I was instantly blown away. Even after all these years the game doesn't feel particularly dated.

    • @thegamelounge659

      I’m not sure what was wrong with Virtua Fighter 3, I guess when it released in the Arcade was a couple of years earlier it had real wow factor. The model 3 architecture was very different to the DC so the conversion was quick and not as good as the arcade but side by side they aren’t a million miles apart. Yet I totally agree. Soul Calibur blew it out the water
