regarding some metagaming: some creatures like trolls are supposedly very common (depending on world ofc) and if you venture a few miles from populated areas you risk running into them and at that point they are so common that using fire against them should be almost common knowledge. we have stories about fictional monsters in our world and being told stuff what to do if you encounter local fauna (i was told as a child that badgers wont release their bite until they hear bones crack so breaking a dry stick or having crackers in your boots to simulte the sound, would make them release their bite, i dont think thats true) so perhaps you have been told that trolls cannot stand the sight of pinecones but if you dont have a pincone fire will work in a pinch.
skill cehcks should work in that way aswell. nature/survival for wild monsters, religion for undeads and demons. arcana for most things apart from non magical beasts.

Long ago, our GM’s wife always rolled her dice in a box and “tilted” to get good results. And when she couldn’t tilt a result she just lied outright and we never saw what she rolled.

Building a little wall so no one can see their dice rolls. Later realizing the wall is suspicious and advancing their cheating to buying dice so unreadable they have to look closely and squint to even see the result themselves, because somehow they think that's less suspicious. Unsure if they think they're not noticed, but they can sometimes get away with it based on the group's politeness for a period, which can be short or long, depending on the group.

back in the 80s people would use clear nail polish to add weight to one side of the dice. I've never understood why anyone would ever try to "win" at D&D by cheating.

It would be interesting to understand the psychology behind the need to win

@@thepickleddragon8590 Sadly they see the world as: Win = Fun rather than Fun = Win. These are likely the same people that have trouble playing mine craft without slaying the dragon, they just want to win rather than setting short term goals, or more abstract goals.
Long and short, it comes down to self motivation levels, Humility levels, and Imagination clarity.

@@justinblocker730 that is an excellent way to describe the situation. While I don't know minecraft I think I understand the idea. Hopefully the pendulum will swing back again.

The referee can make all the dice rolls.

Yeah, that's kind of an old school approach that has faded with time. Certainly stealth and search checks should be done by the dm

I have a hard time with meta gaming monster knowledge. When presented with the option of using shocking grasp or fire bolt on a troll, I chose fire bolt. Sorry, but not sorry. I don’t yell out to the group to use fire though.
