All but one of the character's I ever played had survived adventuring. The only character that died was my very first character, a 1st-level BECMI fighter. ⚔It's been nearly 40 years and I still remember how my first character died... because it was so fucked up. I was in 7th grade, rolled up my character ability scores, HP, and starting gold in front of the DM before class started, spent 4 hours in class sneaking peeks at the Basic Player handbook trying to decide what equipment I wanted to buy with the little money I had, meet up with the DM and the rest of the group at lunch and we start playing. Party sets out from town trudging through a swamp trying to find the ruins that were rumored to have treasure. Stormy weather was already approaching when we set out and the party gets caught in the rain after traveling only a few hours. DM decides to have a lightning bolt strike near the party. 🌩Everyone in metal armor (my chainmail clad fighter being one of three in the party) has to make a saving throw, I'm the only one that failed. The other two take half damage, I take full damage, and the DM rolls ONE ☝point of damage higher than my HP... This was BECMI D&D, there was no "Death's Door" to -10 HP and certainly no "3 death saving throws" it was "Dead at 0 HP"💀 We had only been traveling for a few hours, it was midday, the party could have taken me back to town before it got dark and get me raised. Did they do that? 🤨 ...hell no. One guy ask the DM "If we have to carry him back to town, how heavy is he? What stuff is he carrying?" As soon as I list off all my items another says "I want his arrows" and one of the unarmored character players says "then I want his chainmail" so basically they loot my character's dead body and leave it in the middle of the swamp. Some Gen X 12-year-old 7th graders are just fucking bastards. 😠 Like I said, I've only had 1 character die and I remember it even after nearly 40 years.
