    00:00 Intro
    00:33 Particle
    01:01 Subject vs object
    01:19 은/는 topic vs. 이/가 subject
    02:32 Consonant vs. vowel forms
    02:51 Irregular forms of -이/가
    03:15 What if topic is the subject??!!!?!?!?!?!
    03:57 은/는: not about grammatical structure
    04:40 은/는 = "as for"
    04:49 Example for [topic(은/는) + comment]
    06:12 Exercise : Choose 은/는 or 이/가
    07:13 이/가 : emphasize the subject
    - 2NE1 '내가 제일 잘 나가',
    - 'It's Okay to Not Be Okay' 사이코지만 괜찮아
    07:55 이/가 : "What a...!!!!"
    08:17 Compare 아기는 예뻐요. vs 아기가 예뻐요.
    08:54 은/는 : How about...? , What about...?
    09:38 이/가 : Asking questions
    09:57 Asking questions with 은/는 and 이/가
    10:50 은/는 : contrast and compare
    - 'It's Okay to Not Be Okay' 사이코지만 괜찮아
    12:07 은/는 : say negative things indirectly using the contrasting function
    13:50 은/는 and 이/가 in one sentence:
    "이 식당은 비빔밥이 맛있어요."
    "이 커피숍은 라떼가 맛있어요."
    "이 커피숍은 라떼는 맛있어요."
    "이 커피숍이 라떼가 맛있어요."
    15:17 Advertising copy - Advanced example
    "치킨은 살 안 쪄요. 살은 내가 쪄요."
    As you can see, there are times you can use either 은/는 or 이/가. Even if one sounds more natural than the other in certain contexts, it won't change the translation of the sentence. It won't make it ungrammatical, so do not stress too much about it at the beginning.
    I didn't include the complex sentences in this video. Focus more on the simple use of them to grasp their nuances, and I will make a separate video with complex sentences that have both 은/는 and 이/가.
    For the pronoun "you" in Korean, watch:

    Every video explanation that I have watched about 은/ 는 and 이/가 I can always find one or two new rules.
    It has everything to do with the intention of what you want to say.
    Don't get too stuck up with the grammar and rules. Just focus on your intentions and slowly learn

    OMG……Thank you so very very very much! It’s like a lightbulb just came on in my head! This is probably the clearest, most concise, complete and greatest structure explanation, I have ever heard! I have watched several videos on people trying to explain markers; and I still went away, shaking my head, not being able to understand a thing. I am a very very new beginner of Korean and I totally understood this and I still haven’t finished learning Hangeul yet! Thank you, thank you, so much for taking the time, energy, and investment in making this video, so that people can understand and wrap our brains around these concepts!

The concept of topic and subject particles is one of the most researched topics even among Korean linguists, as there are so many overlaps, so don't let it bother you too much. Move on with learning all other grammar patterns and let the time do some of the magic!

    ❤wowww! I have been studying Korean for almost 2 year and these particles still get me confused but you nailed it , you knew exactly where my confusion lies on…. When subject and topic is the same …. Yay for you! You honored the title of this video and made it easy to understand! I am sure I will need to see this video many more times but this is the light in the tunnel to finally grasp the “feeling” about when to use one or the other.
    I would really love if you made a class or exercise with long sentences or small paragraphs for grammatical analysis… to practice what word is what, a verb, a direct or indirect object, an adjective, a particle … sometimes when there is a omitted subject it gets confusing, a connective word etccc
    Thank you so much for helping boost my Korean learning ! Hello from Mexico!

      Hola! 😃 I must have missed your comment back then, sorry! I am so happy to hear the video helped you especially because this is a confusing topic for many reasons! It’s one of those linguistic features that native speakers acquire so naturally in their intuition whereas learners struggle lifelong…🥲 For me in English that is the article: when do we use a/an, the, or none? I hate those ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ We all just learn little by little, right? ☺️

      Oh thank you for supporting me on both platforms!!! I could feel your sincere support in your comment, and I really appreciate that.
      I know the input hypotheses. 😊 I’ve always tried to incorporate the strategies into my teaching. That’s definitely one of the biggest challenges of virtual teaching. Because videos can’t be made for just one particular group of learners (like a class) with a similar proficiency level, what’s comprehensible to each audience differs greatly. 😢 If it were my class I teach for a long period, I can accomodate my utterance accordingly to each student, but not when teaching virtually... So at least I try to make listening videos with different proficiency levels, or give tips on what to get out of more advanced level videos for the beginners. Once I start offering my own online tutoring service, I’ll be able to accomodate for the learners like I do in person, and I can tell you how excited I feel about that! 🤩
      Once again, thanks for your heart-felt feedback and suggestions! 🙏🏼

    The explanation is very good. My native language have some odd gramatical rules but I failed to understand the benefit of delcinations and particles in many languages, not only Korean, but also German or Russian. Apparently inversions in spoken/written Latin were common, so declinations were somehow useful. In Korean, the particle seems so odd, that the translation to English demands a unusual expression "As for..."

I get that, conversationally, -이/가 and -은/는 can be omitted. I assume, though, that -을/를 should never be omitted, even in conversation, since doing so changes the grammatical meaning of the sentence. Is that correct? Or am I still missing something? 감사합니다, 선생님!

    So my question is ~ are 은/는 and 이/가 interchangeable by any chance?

    • @KoreanJream
      @KoreanJream  3 года назад

      Because they have subtle differences as you saw in the video, they are not completely interchangeable. However, they won't ruin the grammatical meaning. You know mixing 을/를 with these two will change the meaning completely? That doesn't happen when you use 은/는 or 이/가, so don't worry too much about which one is correct. Mostly they both are grammatically correct (probably comes after subject in your sentence) but will sound more or less natural, that's it. :)

    So particles are ALWAYS used for only nouns, never adjectives or verbs or anything else? Also it's very confusing that ga becomes gei at times when there is also infact another particle called gei that is used for I think time and or place? How one arth do you differenciate that? and how to know when its conjugated to ga or gei at the end when to use vwich version why dosen't the word use the same like you mentioned igot and neaga they don't conjugate the same even if its the same particle

    • @ultratwin
      @ultratwin 10 месяцев назад

      You're about halfway there ^^ Adjectives and verbs conjugate, while nouns use particles to indicate subjective (이/가, 은/는, or the honorific 께서), accusative (을/를), or dative (에/에서, 에게, 한테, and the honorific 께) forms.
      Note that "ga becomes gei at times" is a small misunderstanding... *이게 is simply short for 이것이, 그게 is short for 그것이, and 저게 is short for 저것이* , not a morphing of the subject particle, but rather a simple contraction. It was a little confusing how she presented them on that page (she probably should have shown original forms with subject particles as 이것이, 그것이, and 저것이 as the full "this and that" terms) , but again it was just a matter of teaching the contractions when using subject particles; 1st person pronouns 내가/제가 are a non-issue in this case.

  • @aysehilalelcivan
    @aysehilalelcivan 3 года назад

    Thank you soo much for the video. It cleared up a lot of things. But I still have a question. You said that the subject particle comes only after the subject. That's why I assumed that I can use the subject particle just once in a sentence (because there is only one subject). So why is it, that you used it twice in this sentence: 이 커피숍이 라떼가 맛있어요. Isn't coffe shop the location of this sentence?

    • @KoreanJream
      @KoreanJream  3 года назад +1

      This is such a great and challenging question. In a nut shell, Korean can take multiple subjects unlike most of other languages in the world, especially European language. Korean is one of a few languages in the world that can have multiple subjects (Japanese is another language that has the same trait) in one sentence. Unfortunately, there's no clear explanation for this even among Korean linguists.
      One hypothesis is that the predicate (verb/adj) of these sentences is a clause (=sentence with subject and verb) rather than a single verb (in this case the whole clause 라떼가 맛있어요 is the predicate of this sentence). You know there are relative clause (noun followed or preceded by a clause: sub+verb)? In Korean, there's a predicate clause. In addition, in some cases, the first subject are thought to specify and appoint the following subject(s), which also can explain this example: 이 커피숍의 라떼가 맛있어요 would also be grammatically correct without changing the structural meaning of the sentence. So yes, it could be interpreted as a location in terms of meaning, but then which one between 은 and 이 is used when?
      In sum, there can be multiple subjects in one sentence, and there are two sets of subject particles:은/는, 이/가. Then when do people use one and not the other? That's what I was trying to distinguish for the learners. Hoping it helps the learners get a better sense of when to use -이/가 like native speakers would.
      I wish I could give you more simple and clear-cut answer to your question! Hope this still helps!

    When it comes to Korean this explanation is very confusing 😅. I think you can only get this concept with alot of practice. The more I try to understand it the more I find it confusing however English is not my main language so this might play a part.

When you learn these, you naturally become curious about the difference, and these kinds of videos will come handy. But when you are learning a new concept, yes, just learn as they are!!! First of all, 놀 수 있는 장소 (places to hang out) from the verb 놀다, right?
      In the embedded sentence within another sentence, which is a relative clause or noun-modifying structure... you always use -이/가: 한국에는 사람들이 놀 수 있는 장수가 많아요. is the natural sentence.
      Similarly, "My favorite ___ is..." always is "제가 좋아하는 ___은/는" as well. "The restaurant I went yesterday was good." = 제가 어제 간 식당 진짜 맛있었어요.
