      I don’t think it’s a shit move. She negotiated, it still wasn’t where she wanted it to be, so she backed out. It’s called knowing your worth. She knew something was better out there for her, and for probably way less money, and she was right.... right? She absolutely did the right thing. Plus, I don’t think the people who’re renting it out care. Apartments go real quick. Real real which. Someone probably rented that very apartment she backed out that same exact day. Kudos to her!

    • @jenniferbee1500
      @jenniferbee1500 2 года назад +61

      @@sketchyhoe7796 It's considered tacky if you negotiate to a fair price point that you're happy with and then back out. For example, I'm selling a tv for $200. You want it for $150. If I agree to $150 and then you back out, that is in bad taste. If you don't really want it, don't waste anyone's time. This is basically universal law adults follow.

      @@jenniferbee1500 to an extent, I agree. Never waste anyone’s time. But you never know what someone’s going through. What if something occurred to where she absolutely had to back out? Apartment hunting in NY was one of the most stressful times in my life. My husband and I just moved from Miami, and although we wanted to initially be living in NY as we are both chefs and will be working in the city anyway, thus making it more convenient, it just wasn’t going to work out. We have a car and we’re also used to having laundry in-unit, and with the amount of laundry we do (uniforms), it’s a must. The prices (we also were in the $2-2.5k range but lower is always better!) were semi-doable but obviously not with all what we need. The last thing I want to do after a 10-12hr shift is walk-up five flights of stairs. And open the door to a shoebox. And then walk back down to do 2 loads of laundry. And move our car because it’s street sweeping day. Then again tomorrow.
    We ended up moving to West New York, NJ as our non-negotiables were all met (laundry in-unit, dedicated parking, rent below $2k) and it’s only 20 minutes by bus.

      Finding a place in any large American city is horrible now days.Seattle and San Francisco are torture tests. You think you have appointments with psychotic managers and no one shows up. That is standard. You pay $3 a square foot, first and last rents, and a damage deposit that you will never get back. Once you are in you can expect 7% rent increases every year which is the most that can be without 6 month notice. You won’t get 6 month notice because then you can prepare to move out. No one cares about any of your concerns because there is always right behind you trying to get a place. The tech industries have destroyed these once beautiful places. Paul Allen was a monster.

    I lived on 83rd and 3rd in the 70’s in a studio for $250/mo. Too many bugs that refused to pay a portion of the rent. A friend had her claw foot tub in the kitchen. She put a piece of plywood over it and doubled as an awkward somewhat low kitchen table. 😂

      Gosh, even in today's money, with inflation, it's still only about $1,200. Good price. Although, I wouldn't have been able to deal with bugs. The nyc apartments I lived in a few years ago were $3,400 on average. And they were studios.

    Spot on in terms of the documentation, time involved and just energy and work needed to secure an apartment! This video was beautifully done and incredibly realistic. I lived in NYC twice (company relocations) and just didn’t want the long process, broker drama, etc. the second time around and so went with a national company that owns and manages apartment buildings. Place was awesome! W. 77th between CPW and Columbus. Just shy of 600 sq ft., doorman, basement laundry, etc. easy walk to midtown for work. At the time it was about $3200 and, for me, worth not having the search stress I experienced the first time around, but I also recognize how fortunate I was and that the search experience, of course, varies based on budget.

    Pretty similar circumstances to what is happening here in southern california. I was one of the lucky one’s whose lease was up when the rates dropped during covid and was able to move into a 2 bed 2 bath unit in my same complex for only $100 more a month than my 1 bedroom was going to be. I am currently paying $2319 before utilities and when I looked at prices a couple weeks ago, they want over $3700 for my same floor plan!
