Volvo 850 Restoration - Checking Alternator, Cooling System & ECU

- Today we did some diagnostics on our Volvo 850 to see if the alternator still works, if the coolant system has any leaks and we used an OBD reader to check for any error codes. As we had a bunch of parts lying around which we won’t be using any more we gave them away to some who still had some use for those.

Project’s Background Story -
On February 21 ’09 our dad bought this ’96 Volvo 850 2.5L 20V estate. The Volvo has a big emotional value for us and seeing the car sitting still for so many years and watching nature taking over broke our hearts. After nine years, and sitting outside for 7 of those 9 years, we finally got our hands on the 850 and brought it back to its home where we will restore it to its former glory. Once we finish the restoration, we intend to make a road trip and keep in the family for many more years to come.
Glad I found this series🙌 Amazing progress!
Thank you!😄
Good Work! Cheers DIY! 😆🍺✨
Amazing series! I have a question. How did you manage to get your OBD reader to read codes? I thought the 96 models had a Motronic 4.3 ECU which can't be read from a scanner. It's the later Motronic 4.4's which can be read. Has this had an ECU swap before? If it hasn't what scanner and software are you using because my 850 T5 desperately needs it haha!
Thanks, glad you like it!😁
Not sure if the ecu was ever swapped but to the best of our knowledge the 850's got a Motronic 4.4 somewhere in 96. At least in the Netherlands...
As for the OBD reader, we used 2 different ones and both worked just fine. One of them being one of the cheaper ones on Amazon.
Hope this helps!
@@MusTRitch Thanks for replying! I have a 96 but unfortunately it’s fitted with a 4.3 so it looks like I will need to swap for a 4.4 if I want to read the codes! Good luck with the build and I’m excited to see more videos!
Cheers!
@Restore More I have been trying to find more information but the more I read, the more confused I become😅. What I found so far is that our 850 (being the 2.5l 20v from 96) did indeed get a Motronic 4.4 (which supports OBD2) somewhere in 96. However, when compared to the US market that becomes a whole different story... not sure where you're from but as so often, it appears there are major differences between the EU and US markets🤔.
And thanks again!😄
@@MusTRitch I know it’s an absolute mine field! I’m from Scotland so I’m not sure if the UK market is different from EU market. According to the name plates on my chassis it was made in Belgium!
@Restore More Well, that only adds to the confusion😅😅
👍👍😊😊
