I agree with u. They are pretending that we can't easily see this is a person who isn't solid mentally, and he isn't who he once was (mentally). There's something wrong with his brain that doesn't enable him to put pieces of things together completely anymore.
It reminds me of what I've seen many times from people who've had strokes. They have moments in time when they resemble their former selves, so people began to treat them as if they're operating with full understanding and punish them like "normal people".
It's easy to do to him too, because his prior earned wealth allowed him to project as if he is a sound minded "genius" operating on the cutting edge. But we were really observing a person with mental issues, without friend or a circle to help, because his associates were too busy trying to extract value from to use for their own endeavors
