Nobody brought up the fact that defense is actually part of basketball LOL. Jordan was making all defensive first teams as he led the league in scoring all the way up until 1998. Even after taking 3 years off and joining the wizards he began the season on a tear but that knee injury changed the course for him completely. You can watch a video about his season coming back in the numbers and defense he was putting up were MVP level. Nobody has impacted the game like Jordan. Michael Jordan took over the WORLD--without the internet and without social media. Never seen an athlete with so many endorsements, imitations of his style, and pop culture references. The phrase "He / she's the Michael Jordan of (fill in the blank)" is because his name is synonymous with greatness.
I watched Mike, Kobe, and LeBron. Love all of them, but NOBODY brought the majestic aura to the game the way Mike did. He was just different. That presence, that hyper competitiveness underneath that coolness, that class and elegance. Michael Jordan is one of ONE.
No one put together a prime of dominant excellence like Jordan. No one has done two 3-peats like Jordan.
He did all of this AND took two years away in the middle of his prime after his father died. Had that not happened, it's crazy to think that Mike might actually have 8 chips.

Excellent overview...but I think you left off one important thing. His STATISTICAL dominance. Jordan is the only athlete I can name who's equally dominant across traditional statistical categories, advanced metrics AND the eye test. He STILL has the highest scoring average ever, which is nuts when you consider the stats that were put up in the 60s vs the 90s when the pace of play was so much slower...and also did it while shooting over 50% from the floor in the peak big man era while being an all time great wing defender on and off ball.

All of them would be stars in todays league but they wouldn’t be as great as they were in their respective eras. Hakeem would be great in this era but players like Jokic, AD, Embiid would still be better bc they’re more skilled. Reggie Miller and Ray Allen would still be great shooters but they couldn’t shoot of the dribble the same players do today which is one of the main reasons the court has been spread out so much. @DJ-ys9pv Год назад

Individual stats Jordan is close only in some advanced metrics where him and Bron are almost identical (crazy given how different their styles are and how different the eras are). Cumulative stats, MJs not even close, Chips Bron is close being only 2 chips behind and 2 FMVP behind and 1 MVP behind. Team success? Lebron again, MJ has a couple more chips and the 2nd best regular season record but Lebron has a higher win % and he’s had better playoff runs. Fouls? MJ averages more FT/ game than Bron and Bron scores at the rim faaaaar more often so Jordan was basically getting Harden calls back in the day that Bron doesn’t get now. Skills? Bron is a better overall player and has been that consistently over 20yrs. Longevity? Lebron by a mile. Defense? Bron again was a better overall defender and especially in his prime. MJ has a DPOY over Lebron so I’ll say they break even but we all know Bron was robbed of DPOY but it is what it is. MJ was a better perimeter defender for a longer period but again, Bron was guarding 1-5 in his prime and doing it well (not like he does today lol). Leadership? Different eras but both have had teammates praise their leadership time and time again with a few hating teammates (MJs are easier to find but I’m sure Bron has rubbed some teammates the wrong way- edge: Lebron). Like if MJ is your GOAT that’s cool but Bron is the GOAT and has just as good or better of an argument than MJ. I’d argue Jordans popularity and timing makes him the GOAT more than anything on the court does lol and that counts. But for me, Bron, as a basketball player, is the 🐐

Passing depends if you choose it and it also depends on who is converting it too. Cumulative stats doesnt mean much. An immortal person can outscore everyone by just doing 5ppg. That doesnt make him great per game. 2 chips is far. You try winning 1 nba championship. Bron scores far more on the rim but no one is contesting it. Lbj ft% is weak. And hia midrange is weak. His footwork needs work. His dream shake aka windshield wiper looks so awkard and slow. Lbj flops and doesnt defend as much. Jordan has more block and more steals. And he has a better chase fown block where he lifted off and tilted like a superman. Lebron barely guard 1 and 5. And he's not even good at it. He can barely chase 1. Let's try switching their job. Lebron shooting midranges. Jordan passing. MJ as point guard average a tripple double for 10/11 and still having 30ppg. Can Lebron do 50% midrange? Why midrange and not dunk or layups? Who has more opportunity to shoot on clutch? Midrange or dunk? That will tell you how much opportunity you can get on how to score on each game. And bron only has around 35% midrange.

That is why 54% of the recent polls said curry is the real goat in this era over lebron as curry has not only changed the game forever, but curry has also turned one of the all time worst time GSW into a team dynasty, which lebron has never been great enough to carry his own team to a championship as lebron eventually needs to be an easy ring chasing mercenary to hop from one stacked team to another to team up with so many franchise star players in their prime and proven veterans, but lebron still keep losing...
Despite of having more helps than any athlete in any sport history, Lebron doesnt even have a winning record against real opponents with 10-10 against 50+ wins teams, 3-5 against 60+ wins and only 22/54 in nba final. Even more importantly, lebron would have easily been 1-8-1 without the bail out by allen in 2013, silver's stimulus package in 2016 and AD in this whole embarrassing AD trade sage in 2020 bubble year. If lebron didnt benefit most of his career in the weaker conference competition, lebron would have never made to a single final appearance.
We can all agree that lebron's longevity of empty stat chasing doesnt make lebron in the top 25 as the game is to play for wins and championship, not empty stat chasing. It is like saying WB is the goat just because of his triple double.

If you think those guys are terrible then I'll have fun going through the guys LeBron guarded for most of his career.
Don't even mention guys like Rose or Durant who he guarded a few times a game. But to act like Jordan was chilling on defense because he was guarding nobodies is hilarious and it just tells me the kind of nephews I see on this comment section

Jordan was better on offense, significantly better on defense and also significantly better at closing games in clutch situations. Also Lebron for his career is only shooting 37% outside of 3 feet from the basket and in the playoffs that goes down to 31%. That's a HUGE weakness in Lebron's game and Jordan simply didn't have any weaknesses, especially in the midrange game where he is the greatest of all time. This is a preposterous take by Draymond.

No the overall talent of the league is better today than 30 years ago… it’s not because of evolution or anything like that but because it’s way more competitive than ever before.. MJ started the expansion on the global level of the NBA but there weren’t as many foreign born players in the league because of less scouting opportunities and the lack of exposure. Even players back then like Hakeem and Patrick Ewing had to go to college in the states for their talents to be recognized.
Also, old players have admitted to diets and staying in shape during the offseason wasn’t a priority.. even the bench guys in today’s game have to stay in shape to keep up with how competitive the league is today..
Yesterday’s athletes were stronger and tougher, also knew how to simplify the game much more but today’s athletes lived and breathed since infant stages

However let's not act like Jordan didn't have a lot of things to his Advantage during the time that he played, for one he got it very favorable whistle especially in the playoffs. For two he played in an era where he was more physically dominant than most if not all of the opponents that defended him. And then he played in an era where illegal defense was called when you did not fully commit to a double team there was mainly one-on-one play.
