Aaahhhhh you've exposed one of my favorite ways to fish. Been doing it for 26 years now. I remember when you couldn't google trolley rig. And the skyway banded trolley rigging now
WOW, Capt. Joshua, A blast from the past. I don't know how I missed it but it was sure nice to find it now. MOST informative! Especially with the current videos you have had on the sky way pier. Great Video Dude. 521 thumbs up, what gives now? Hmmm.
Great videos, Joshua. Your videos are very clear, details, and helpful. Please keep up the great work posting more tutorials or fishing tips so many people like me can learn. Sharing is learning. I am so eager to make the rig and try it out. Nice if you can video when fish on.
Am going to try this from the beach here in California with a 13 foot surf rod as the rod I attach to the bottom, and a seven foot rod as my main rod. Would this work in the surf, or will I be better off using the long rod as my main rod?
How do you retrieve your anchor back if it's rocked? And how do you retrieve back your cloth pin if you get a bite. Do we need to prepare a lot of clothpin rigs? Thanks
Hello, You do need a few rigs, I use a very light wire bronze hook that will bend under breaking pressure. I then add a bead and a bobber stop a few feet above the hook in case the line breaks, if the line breaks the rigs will travel down to the bead and stop.
Joshua Taylor Thanks for your answer. For king mackerel fishing, what kind of leader and what size would you use? You let your bait float on the surface or sink deeper?
Is it possible that the bat line will get tangled around the trolls line for example when the current changes or in some other case? How can this be avoided?
Depends on the bottom and what you use as an anchor rod (trolley rod). Here on the East Coast we anchor in the sand, and use 10 to 15 foot heavy surf rods so we can heave out 5 lb anchors that looks similar to a small pier gaff. We lose them from time to time. but yank up the lost also at the end of the day now and again. The key is getting some thing to stay put for the day and surf/bottom.
Sport fish like to follow and push their prey inshore into a corner. When they run into a pier they see it as an obstacle, so they run up the outside of the pier or under it. The pin-rig, or trolley rig, suspends live bait just above the surface flopping around as an easy meal. The key to this type of rig is to use fresh live bait, which makes the use of it a lot of work catching fresh bait. Sport fish will pass on most pier (dead) baits because they are chasing live baits in the water, but will snap at a chance of an easy meal on a pin-rig while passing by. Most everyone on a pier is fishing for bait, while pin-rig or trolley rig guys are fishing for sport fish. Hope this helps....
@@roberttoppi5427 rite you want it just below surface - but keeping it so the waves will not make your bait come in an out of the water - I have found out to much in an out will kill the bait
You don't need to tie a fighting rod to the rail.... 2-4 lbs max on the drag and just lean the pole against the rail. Star drags are outdated, but they worked; lever drag reels is the way to go today. It is all about how you rig your bait. Never set a drag down on a pole at a pier if it is not in your hands!!!
I’m new to fishing. This setup was very helpful. What time of the year is best to use this type of rig? I’m still trying to figure out the fishing seasons.
Dude, u can trolley with one rod, 9-10ft with snap swivel w/ bait fish.. just make sure on the end of ur weight u have a good knot or another swivel to hold fight of fish👍🏽🐟, same steps, chunk ur weight till its stuck then trolley down ur live bait.
Awesome video! Definitely have to give this a try. Did you shoot this video yesterday 10/17? I was leaving the pier and noticed the rod in the holder with the tip with a huge bend and wondering what that was :).
Awesome! If I see you next time, I'll make sure to stop and say hello! That day I was targeting Spanish mackerel north of the bait house. Landed 4 but 2 were keepers. I am trying to get down there hopefully two times next month to try and target grouper. I live in Citrus County. Your videos have put me in the right direction. Just need to finally experience this "hitting like a freight" experience. Keep up the great work!
It is very interesting, but Let me know if you get something to keep your bait on the hook. Because with all DOLPHIN lovers it's impossible to catch some really decent fish.

I appreciate that Steve, I try and make them as clear as possible.
Excellent tutorial. Outstanding 🌴 💯
Thanks!

I think it could work if you can get the trolley line high enough but it may be difficult.
but how do you rig the zipline rod? is it a treble hook with a sinker? what snags the bottom?
Thank you for idea. What is the size of your sinker and lines on bait and anchor rods?
Hi! Really nice video, can you add link for the Trolley rig tutorial? I couldn’t find it on your page or under this video details
This is a great setup and I can't wait to get out there and try it. Thank you Joshua.
Larry Harvey Great, let us know how you do.
@@Saltyscales can u use mono as the slide leader
Heavy mono
If there is no structure around the jetty/pier will a heavy sinker at the end of a trolley rod suffice?
I have not found that a heavy sinker can work with this rig. It has to hold very tight pressure for the trolley system to work.
what weight sinker do you use on the trolley line?

I have never had them tangle.
I like this idea, kinda like kite fishing we'd do growing up in Florida
How do you get the first line unstuck from the bottom?
+jesus Cortez I use thin gauge hooks and they bend out with extreme pressure.

Can you explain the reason to use this rig? I see this over complicated just to throw a bait and wait for the fish to strike?
+jroyero Hello sir, the reason for this rig is to keep your bait stationary regardless of the tide and assist with hooking pelagics once they strike.
Lol. I was thinking the same thing. It would seem more logical to throw out a line with a heavy enough weight to keep the line in place.

Chuck Howard so ur not supposed to bring ur bait to the bottom. Just above the surface?
@@roberttoppi5427 rite you want it just below surface - but keeping it so the waves will not make your bait come in an out of the water - I have found out to much in an out will kill the bait
How do you retrieve your trolley rig after a fish pulls it loose?
Break off the line and make a new one
Whats on the trolly rod. An anchor?
Small bronze hook
Great video, Thumbs up !!
Can the trolley/anchor rod have braid on it?
It can but it doesn't slide as well IMO.
On the trolley end is it just a heavy sinker and hook?
For the most part
How tall are those pvc pipes you said waist high but I’m 6’6” I don’t think it needs to be to my waist lol
what do you use for the anchor rod? just a weight or a treble and weight or what?
great instructional video! I might have to try this out one day!
Perfect setup for the pelagics off the piers.
Which side of the skyway was that? Great vid!
What did you use on the trolley rod to get it to get caught in the bottom? Will this work with spinning gear?
+Jennifer Dille I recommend using a bronze hook, so it quickly deteriorates.
+Joshua Taylor Yes it will work with spinning gear.
and what leader should I use for kingfish?
Do u have to tie your rod to the pier?
I highly recommend it.

The sun will set by the time I get done setting this up.
You'd be surprised, looks more complicated than it is
What power and length rod do you recommend for the anchor rod?
What size weight did you cast to get it stuck ?
A 1 ounce weight works for me.
What type and what size hook do you use for the pinfish
I actually use the little pan fish gold hooks. They work perfectly.
whats the point of tieing down the rod instead of just having another pvc pipe?
What is the rod and reel the bait is on? Thanks
Hey I plan to do this rig and do you know if the kings are at the pier yet and we should go fishing some time i live near the pier
Hello Pat, the kings are at the piers now.
This is good for kings?
Nice vid man. Which pier was this?
What rod are you using with the live bait on it?
What rod is this and specs like height and ratinf
Thank you for this information
You're welcome
Great instructional video!
Thanks Chris!
Clicking videos doesn't work anymore lol can we get the link to the other video?
is there a simple way of a site where i could buy some these rigs?
what a cool vid, wish we got some gaiants like that here
Thanks bud, what region of the country are you in?
I am in Portugal :P a bit far from you
Very cool, you catch mainly bass?
not really, I am a multispecies fishermen, I like fresh and saltwater fishing, I don´t care for the fish, just love the fights and be out in nature :)
You need to do a video on how you rig your baits.............
I’m new to fishing. This setup was very helpful. What time of the year is best to use this type of rig? I’m still trying to figure out the fishing seasons.
Really anytime
Can u make those rigs and sell them ?
What kind of weight are you using?
Pyramid or egg sinkers.
Great tip! Thank you!
You are welcome!
Nice vid! What was your conventional set up?
Gulp_Man102 Daiwa Saltist, and a St. Croix Triump rod. 🐟
1:00 notice a fish slamming bait?
Yes sir, nice catch! Mackerel were feeding up a storm.

You're welcome
Many thanks! Greatly appreciated!
You're welcome!
I have to try this out!
Tremayne Whitfield Most definitely, now is the time.
***** what do you aim for at night?
MakeupBy Samantha on this rig, tarpon or cobia would be the species to target.
What bait should I use for that?
Live ladyfish, mullet or a large live greenback.
Thank you, on my way there now.
+MakeupBy Samantha You're welcome, lots of tarpon around the bridges. Look down along the shadow lines. You will see them.
Did you end up catching anything
Quite a few spanish mackerel and mangrove snapper. Kings and bonita are not here yet.
Awesome video! Definitely have to give this a try. Did you shoot this video yesterday 10/17? I was leaving the pier and noticed the rod in the holder with the tip with a huge bend and wondering what that was :).
Ian Cordova Yes, we sure did.

with a 3 feet pvc work?
Three feet would just clear it I believe, May want a little more.
That damn dolphin!! It's missing part of his top dorsal fin... he will go from pole to pole there on the south pier!!!!
He is a menace for sure.
I've seen him before on the south, ended up taking me and my buddy's pinfish we were freelining. I wonder how he lost it?
Atleast you showed everyone the harder way to do it.
What did you use to secure the line on the first pole to secure the line to the bottom? Not very good instructions. A lot of questions left
If you can't understand what is being done in this video, no amount of instruction can help you. Step one, watch part one!👍
I will attempt this on Lake Michigan Chicago as the weather warms to keep my line from venturing all over.May catch a King Salmon or Coho.
Let us know how you do Bill.
I'm already a pro at step 1
Lmao
U didn't tell what u use on the end of your trolley rod's line to snag the bottom.
I go fishing to relax, this is too much work!!
I go for the adrenaline and action but I don't mind kicking back and enjoying mother nature.
THE KNOT YOU MADE TO HOLD THE ROD TO THE PIER IS CALLED A "DONKY DICK". its a big favorite for riggers of all trades.
Great video only thing that sucks is that that stupid dolphin ate your bait rather than a Cobia. Good luck Catch Em Up
It is very interesting, but Let me know if you get something to keep your bait on the hook. Because with all DOLPHIN lovers it's impossible to catch some really decent fish.
Luis Beltran - Sokolov Try large threadfins, they pass on them 98% of the time.
If it weren't for the dolphins I could enjoy fishing on the pier.. last week they were unrelentless all night long... 🙁
Omg that's way to much to set up when fishing with 3 kids 😂
This is not a setup for kids, this is a setup for adults who are out there to target big fish. ;)
Wats all this confusion. I have caught many fish with far less hassle
Nothing to be confused about, if you aren't using this rig when pier fishing then you're cutting yourself short.
victum for the mariner YES
polluting the waters with
your fishing nets, garbage
and debris. ONLY fitting
revenge is served to society
Pretty easy to cut and paste from the internet, however we pickup way more than we throw in.
I am not saltwater fisherman but why not just cast and set the hook youself
Oh nevermind i understand
Brock Blazier This rig is meant to keep your bait in the same position regardless of the tide. It also keeps it in a targeted strike zone.
Ok thank you !!!👍👍👍
How do you get your release snap back to you on your trolling rod?
Bobber stop
What weight do you use to get it snagged?
Bassaholics An ounce usually works great!
