Great video +Joshua Taylor.. Thanks! Subscribed.. I'm just getting back into fishing after too long of a hiatus and I am really looking forward to checking out the Skyway pier once all the red tide is gone.. Your videos go a long way in helping us "newbies" get started! In the early 80s at Redington and Indian Rocks piers we used to call this setup "outriggers" or "out lines." For Tarpon we used mostly 4/0 reels and (mostly) large pinfish for bait. The rod we were fishing was secured to the pier with a certain type of rod holder that allowed you to easily remove it with a big fish on, or, short of that, tied the rod to the pier with a rope with a quick release knot. We then used a "clip rig" for backup security. The clip rig was a short rope with a snap hook on the end that was separately tied to the pier, and the snap hook was clipped onto one of the two eyes on the reel. That way, even if the rod came out of the holder (or rope used to tie it down with) we didn't lose our rod. What species are usually targeted with this rig? Kingfish? Tarpon? How are large Tarpon released after a long fight? At Redington long pier they used to keep a couple of long pole gaffs at the end of the pier where we were fishing that could be used to release a fish. The inside of the hook was reasonably sharp so all you needed to do was get the hook of the gaff around the leader close to the fish, twirl it to wrap some of the leader around the gaff, and then give it a sharp pull to either cut the leader with the inside of the gaff hook, or otherwise free the hook from the fish's mouth. Tight lines!
Cool do you have a detailed video on the rig setup? and how does the bait get stopped from going further is their a stopper or something ? if so can you demonstrate how to add the stopper thnx
***** had some nice blue runners on but dolphin were all over the place kept attacking my bait trying again this weekend prob monday going to make a vid and post
How hard was it to make the rod, I'm looking for a rod to go on a avet hxw, and it's a pain to find a rod off the shelf for tarpon and kings from a pier
The guy I used to go to is very sick now and no longer builds but your best bet is finding a blank that you like and hiring a good builder to dress it up with fine components.
Joshua, thanks for shedding light on how it's done!! Have always wanted to try that at the Skyway during the king fish run. What are you using to anchor the trolley to the bottom??
Thanks!!!! Hope to see you out there sometime. Need to get out there and catch some macs and threads soon. Gona need um for a little trip to the Tortugas. Best wishes!!
What do you use as an anchor to set your outrigger? I fish the skyway every weekend and I love using trolley setups, I am stuck trying to find a good anchor, Ive used everything from sputnik weights to just plain heavy 8oz sinkers. Ideally I want to hook up on the rocks out there but I just can't seem to.
Hello and thanks for your question. The Eco friendly version would have you use a rock. Tie the mono to the rock and attach a bronze treble so that it rust away quickly.
Weight to swivel then 10lb leader to treble hook when its time to pop ur line u will only loose the treble and keep weight w any trolley rigs that slid down
Hey Josh can you make a video steep by step.? You first line was already there, my cuestion is what did you use to put one the bottom to have it in place. I m a rookey...jejejeje.thanks. P.S like your web page is help me alot, keep the good work.
great video i planning to go this saturday to skyway what line weight should i be using and what size hook its my first time going out there i love fishing for hobby
Hey Jay, it depends on what you are targeting. For kingfish, I would use 30-60lb main line and a 40lb wire leader. For spanish mackerel, I use 10-15lb braid and 30lb mono leader.
Joshua Is the trolley rig mono or braid? Or does it make a difference? Also what pound test are you using for the trolley rig? Thanks for your time and good video.
hello have some question about the TRolley Rigfor the sunshine bridge what size how long is the Ratchet Tie Downs like to get thethe same size you have thanks
Great video Joshua, this looks like a good technique. I'm wondering if you get your snagged weight back, or if it just ends up on the bottom? I imagine that lead isn't awesome to leave out there (when possible). I guess I could put a swivel between weight and treble to keep from littering lead all over...thoughts? Thanks!
+Randy Smith To hold the bait at the surface, when the fish strikes the bait, it releases from the trolling line and the fish is typically hooked at that point.
been wanting try this for kings for years never knew the details of this rig. great info! would you recomend a conventional rod in med/heavy or medium?
Ever heard of I a slide rig. Same concept but you through you lead on the same pole that your gonna fight the fish on then you attach the slide jig to the line and let the weight of your bait push it self into the water. This style is famous here in hawaii. Only when your rod is high above sea level.
I use a very light wire bronze hook that will bend under breaking pressure. I then add a bead and a bobber stop a few feet above the hook in case the line breaks, if the line breaks the rigs will travel down to the bead and stop.
ok thank you that makes sense, my only question from what you said though is will the hook dig into the sand or does it have to go into a piece of coral because the pier I fish at does not have many coral but kingfish they do
Did you catch anything when you made this vid? I'm heading out there monday got 2 trolley rods ready to run two baits one on my spin fisher v 10500 and the other for my long beach 65 also gonna drop a big bait depending on the tide for a big bull or something on my 9/0 ill let you know how i do :)
Hey Joe, it was really slow. We managed a few Spanish but no kings or bonita this time around. There are some large Jacks in the 20lb range frequenting the piers.
We always use shower curtain rings instead of a snap swivel. They are a little easier to work with and slide a lot better..The round rings that snap together ..If you are ever in the mood to try it, I personally like them better..Especially a bright color to see it easy by other angler, and that one idiot guy on a jet ski :P Same exact set up basically only a Shower curtain ring on the end
Hey nice vid... I was wondering how your tie down the rod with the bait on it. I heard the Guys at redington pier use a "tie down fly", not sure how to do it tho. Thanks!
I use a different type of clip or "pop off rig" if you would like I can make a video and post it on my channel. I have relatives that fish that pier all the time. You may know the Mackie family. I fish for Kings with that setup. Love it!
Hey Joshua. Nice tutorial.🔥 I got a question for you. Where's a good spot to attach your closepin on your attack rod? Do you like to put it above or below your leader line?
Hey nice vid... I was wondering how your tie down the rod with the bait on it. I heard the Guys at redington pier use a "tie down fly", not sure how to do it tho. Thanks!
At redington fishing for tarpon / kingfish, we also used a "clip rig" (a rope with a snap hook like on a dog leash on one end) as a backup. The rope is tied to the pier, and the snap hook clips on to the reel. Back then we mostly used 4/0 reels that have the eyes on each side of the reel.
I have been fishing for 70 = years and have never herd of a trolley rig. I will try it the next time i am at ihe skyway. Thanks like your shows.
Glad to teach something new 👍
That pier is awesome...and you can just drive up. Pure bliss.
Yes sir!
Thanks for sharing this, Josh.
I am happy to see this type of fishing is still being practiced.
Walter Holland You're welcome
hitting up the skyway on sunday! I just spent all day making my first trolley rigs! Great vid! keep them coming
Awesome, let us know how it goes. Once you get the hang of the rig, it's a piece of cake. ;)
will do

Tight lines!
Thanks for the showing us this set up. New to pier fishing, all info is appreciated !!
I learned to fish a rig like that in Newport Beach CA, back in 84. We just called it a Slider rig. Never used a cloths pin.
+James Hart It definitely goes way back, but the close pin is what allows for perfect placement and hookup.
great video Joshua. looking fwd to seeing more in near future
Thanks Rico!
I saw people using this method at my pier and they caught some nice fish
It's an effective technique for sure.
Thanks for the upload Josh, i will be there on friday for the macz
You're welcome, let us know how you do.
sure thing bro!
People are getting away from the trolley rig these days and using the slider rig setup now and it works the same if not better
That great PVC pipes for the fishing pole so it won't escape great job
+Freddy Diaz Thanks Freddy
Will that clothes pin hold the line even if u have a big bait on?
It holds my blue runners, just add an additional rubber-band and wrap it more if additional pressure is needed.
Appreciate it
we called it a Cable-car rig in Singapore...works really well and haul up sizeable fishes too.. 👍👍
+Darmawandy Rozali Interesting, thanks for sharing bud.
Good job, just a little tip, try using a shower ring as your slider, gets to the water quicker, and slides much easier, thanks
+Alex williams Thanks for the tip Alex, we will give it a try.
Cool do you have a detailed video on the rig setup? and how does the bait get stopped from going further is their a stopper or something ? if so can you demonstrate how to add the stopper thnx
+Hamza Khan I am going to remake this video, this particular video tutorial was not my best to say the least.
Nice vid going out tonight to setup for the morn first time tryin trolley ... enough info on vid will let u kno how it went
Sounds good Steven, we hope you land a big one!
***** had some nice blue runners on but dolphin were all over the place kept attacking my bait trying again this weekend prob monday going to make a vid and post
@taRpon fishRman, it is a custom calstar rod equipped with a Diawa Saltist.
How hard was it to make the rod, I'm looking for a rod to go on a avet hxw, and it's a pain to find a rod off the shelf for tarpon and kings from a pier
The guy I used to go to is very sick now and no longer builds but your best bet is finding a blank that you like and hiring a good builder to dress it up with fine components.
thanks bro for responding so fast
You're welcome!
taRpon fishRman It's fun and not that difficult to build your own...I highly recommend it!
Joshua, thanks for shedding light on how it's done!! Have always wanted to try that at the Skyway during the king fish run. What are you using to anchor the trolley to the bottom??
Hello Angel, you can use an egg sinker with a bronze treble.
Thanks!!!! Hope to see you out there sometime. Need to get out there and catch some macs and threads soon. Gona need um for a little trip to the Tortugas.
Best wishes!!
like the idea but not sure what you do with the rubber band and what's it's purpose
Hello Betty B the rubber-band goes around the clothes pin to make it grasp the line a little tighter, so that it doesn't slip out.
Very interesting seems a bit complex. Would love to see a more detailed description from start to finish.
Hey Chris, check out the new one I made. It's a bit better.
is this one of the fishing piers in Tampa?
very close to Tampa, the skyway is located in St. Pete.
Khaled Campa u live in tampa,if so in wheelchair looking for hark/night fishing partner.b apreciated anyone

I like Steven's way as well. :)
Steven McPaul I used to do it that way but I can never seem to find any rocks to hitch on to in the spot where I fish
Ashton, watch my Skyway grouper video and you wont have that problem. ;)
Hey Josh can you make a video steep by step.? You first line was already there, my cuestion is what did you use to put one the bottom to have it in place. I m a rookey...jejejeje.thanks. P.S like your web page is help me alot, keep the good work.
+Adept Killerz Thanks bud, I will see what I can do. :)
whats the setup you have on your bait bucket
great video i planning to go this saturday to skyway what line weight should i be using and what size hook its my first time going out there i love fishing for hobby

Joshua
Is the trolley rig mono or braid? Or does it make a difference? Also what pound test are you using for the trolley rig? Thanks for your time and good video.
Hello L Weir the trolley is braid, I find that the snap swivel tends to slide better on the braided line.
hello have some question about the TRolley Rigfor the sunshine bridge what size how long is the Ratchet Tie Downs like to get thethe same size you have thanks
Not sure but they come in a four pack at home Depot.
hi I think I know which one to get thank you very much :)
Thanks!
Thanks Marc, we tie a large rubber-band knot that catches the lead. We do not like leaving anything in the ocean that shouldn't be there. :)
***** Excellent, you seem to have your stuff together, I figured you'd thought of something! Tight lines sir!
Hey have you ever caught a Bonita at the skyway
Hello red fish fisher yes sir, we have caught dozens of bonita at the piers. If you look through my videos, we even have a bonita video uploaded. :)
Thanks
what other species have you caught on the pier
Tarpon, grouper, redfish, speckled trout, silver trout, cobia, sharks of many species, bluefish, mackerel, snapper, and snook.
Redfish, speckled trout how'd you catch them in the deep water I love reds how'd you catch them oh and the trout
What was your rod and reel setup for the fighting rod looked very nice
+THE MAD FISHERMEN Custom Calstar with a Diawa Saltist. Thanks!
Does a 6'6 rod work for kings at the pier
Hello There, it would work however I would personally prefer a little more limber rod in the 7 foot range.
What's the clothes pin for?
+Randy Smith To hold the bait at the surface, when the fish strikes the bait, it releases from the trolling line and the fish is typically hooked at that point.
+Joshua Taylor (Salty Scales) Cool! Thanks!
been wanting try this for kings for years never knew the details of this rig. great info! would you recomend a conventional rod in med/heavy or medium?
Medium heavy is my preferred class.
Cool rig it looks like they do that on the west coast piers to....
+smokster0604 Thanks, yes it is popular over on the west coast.
Ever heard of I a slide rig. Same concept but you through you lead on the same pole that your gonna fight the fish on then you attach the slide jig to the line and let the weight of your bait push it self into the water. Dennis Badis I have not Dennis but I will look into it, thanks for sharing bud.
Where is that? Florida?
Yes indeed, central Florida
Love it good video where's the fish?
Thanks Chris, no kings on this day. :(
How do you get your anchor weight back is my question and what about the release clips too
I use a very light wire bronze hook that will bend under breaking pressure. I then add a bead and a bobber stop a few feet above the hook in case the line breaks, if the line breaks the rigs will travel down to the bead and stop.
ok thank you that makes sense, my only question from what you said though is will the hook dig into the sand or does it have to go into a piece of coral because the pier I fish at does not have many coral but kingfish they do
I designed the same thing in the early 90's but I used a downrigger clip. I still have my drawings with the date on them
Awesome, yea my uncle was using this type of rig back in the early 80's. He was a wise fella.
We should go fishing! I live in Apollo beach so we close by each other!
+Nando Soto I wish I had more time to go fishing, the business keeps me pretty tied up.
Very Good!
+Nicholas Longo Thank you!
We always use shower curtain rings instead of a snap swivel. Ronnie Black
That is what we used. A
shower curtain hook!
Gosh, I am happy to see
this type of fishing is still being practiced.
What's the purpose of the clothespin?
To hold the line that the bait is attached to.
Hey nice vid... I was wondering how your tie down the rod with the bait on it. I heard the Guys at redington pier use a "tie down fly", not sure how to do it tho.
Thanks!
theress a vid with about that type in redington long pier fishing, and the guy that posted it is like fishing with bill miller
Yeah I know but they took it off dude... now his on WFN
Andres Sanchez I will try and make a short video this weekend showing you how to safely tie down the rod.
Thanks man!
You're welcome!
gonna try this rig on a cliff lol i can't cast my conventional reel far enough... thank u!
You are welcome Clark!
When is it too late to fish for kings at the skyway?
When the water temps start to dip below 68 degrees.
Was that an LX?
Hello Vincent, it's a Diawa Saltist. You can't go wrong with an LX though. ;)
I use a different type of clip or "pop off rig" if you would like I can make a video and post it on my channel. I have relatives that fish that pier all the time. You may know the Mackie family. I fish for Kings with that setup. Love it!
Andrew Palagyi That would be great! More knowledge is helpful.
i use a really light rod on bridges. how do i bring the fish up without killing it with something inexpensive?
Crab ring lowered under the fish
Why don't you set up at the end of the pier for kings
When do when they are running, typically the fall and spring. We setup our trolley rigs.
*We
Try a non return slider clip we catch big fish DAT way in south Africa u only need one rod fr a slider clip
Oh, and subbed!
+Marc Iwata Thank you!
Can't see anything
+Homey Van Smack Unfortunately it isn't our best video but the verbal instruction is pretty good.
nice video just to much work
+Dominique revis It's not to bad after you set it up a few times.
That's a nice looking spot. What varieties of fish do you normally catch out there? New Subscriber here. Come check me out over at OD5 fishing.
Hello, we catch a variety of species. Everything from sharks, cobia, snapper, grouper to mackerel. Will do, thanks!
Wow, snapper and grouper. That's sweet!
Hey Joshua. Nice tutorial.🔥 I got a question for you. Where's a good spot to attach your closepin on your attack rod? Do you like to put it above or below your leader line?
I attach mine above the wire
Hey nice vid... I was wondering how your tie down the rod with the bait on it. I heard the Guys at redington pier use a "tie down fly", not sure how to do it tho.
Thanks!
+Andres Sanchez I use a rope with a quick release knot.
At redington fishing for tarpon / kingfish, we also used a "clip rig"
(a rope with a snap hook like on a dog leash on one end) as a backup. The rope is tied to the pier, and the snap hook clips on to the reel. Back then we mostly used 4/0 reels that have the eyes on each side of the reel.
