Float Rig vs Bottom Rig! Trout Fishing with Power Eggs & Gulp Worms

  • Today I'm out trout fishing with a float and a bottom rig to see which works better with power eggs & gulp worms. Since I found a somewhat dependable trout fishing spot, its time to experiment a little with different rigs and baits. I start off with the float rig and a gulp worm and don't get any bites. Then I switch to the power eggs and still don't get a bite. After removing the float, I catch a trout on the first cast! I am also able to catch one on the worm! I think I will stick to the bottom rig for now.

    Float rigs for trout work great when done right. First you want to use a light weight plastic float with a clear bottom, then you have to use much smaller splitshots 2 or 3 along the length of your leader then adjust your line so that you are just bouncing off the bottom. It must all look as real as possible and you will do great. Took some time but it is now one of my favorite trout techniques. Pink worms work great. Also do not bunch up your splitshots. Spread them along your leader. I have great luck with the BB size wingless green weights. A natural float is key.

    • @RealisticFishing
      @RealisticFishing  5 лет назад

      None of that is the problem with my rig. The bait can't bounce off the bottom when the water goes from 1 ft deep, to 3 ft, back to 2 ft and then 6 inches... Thanks anyway.

    I was just trout fishing yesterday at a ‘local’ lake (about an hour drive for me.) It was me and two elder gentleman. Both had really good knowledge of the waters. We spent 6 hours sharing baits and techniques and all the little changes we made in our fishing to all key in on the fish.
    I came out with my daily limit of 3 as well as one of the others. The other guy took home 2. I also broke my PB for a chain pickerel, on a yellow rooster tail. Wind pick up, so I started nailing my lures out with the wind. Sped up the retrieval and gave it a few pauses along the way and beached a 29 inch pickerel.
    Besides that. It was a multi species day of trout, largemouth, pickerel, yellow perch, and bluegill. Really wanted a crappie to take home though. Still, hands down the best day of fishing in awhile for an all around fun day.

    I fish for trout the same way. By bouncing it on the bottom. What I find happens more for me is the split shot gets snagged more than the hook. Like the video, man!

    Tip on bobbers for trout the best ones to use, that dont scare them, and seem to work best for me is the clear ones you can put water in to adjust the float also 1.5-2foot leader made from 6pd line.
    Also when you add water to them, they seem to float in the current better, and dift nicely i into the holes, and pools.

    A couple things to try: 1) different float depths, although I suspect where you are fishing the drift is too fast with a float. 2) For snaggy places try drop shotting using a split shot...a lot of times if the split shot gets hung up you can pull the line through the shot, only losing the shot. It can also keep the hook slightly higher than the snags. The split shot makes it easy to adjust the distance betwixt the hook and the shot. In some waters (still water ) I like to use the "critically balanced" "waggler"/British style stick floats...they indicated takes in any direction. Good video as usual! #keepitreelstick

    • @silaspitch9485
      @silaspitch9485 2 года назад +1

      Agreed. Even though I sometimes bounce eggs along the bottom, I typically use a float in all waters. I'm in the US, but switched to UK-style float fishing a few years ago as it better suits my approach to fishing. I enjoy fishing more since making the switch. I do have a handful of crystal insert wagglers from the UK, but I typically use a Thill TG waggler for still water and dot it down to about a quarter-inch.
      For streams and rivers, I typically use a wire-stem float and continuously mend the line downstream. For these purposes, I'll use a Thill Turbo Master 6.5". I really like that float, so it's too bad that Thill no longer makes it. I suppose I'll have to hit up Ebay again for one of the UK swift water sticks if I ever need a replacement.

    Most Trout we were catching in CA. where I use to live and they stocked during the winter, when we used a Texas Rig, we did use a lot of power bait, Mostly on a small hook and make a little ball of the Power Bait just covering the complete hook then kinda tight line fishing it like for Cat fish. We had more luck using Pumpkin, yellow garlic, yellow corn, and a light green color. Some would hit on the small baits like you used in a video a couple back with the mouse tails. Also we had a lot hitting on Little MINI MARSH MELLOWS..

    Never had any luck on float in streams. When I go to ponds or lakes I do alright with em

    Bobbers do tend to scare trout but trout magnet sells little “strike indicators” that’s work like a dream

    I've never caught a trout using a bobber in a creek. You made a good move going to the bottom.

    I can see the trout surfacing in the ripples. That stream must be loaded with stocked trout. Catch em up ! 👍

    I would carry a couple little ziplock baggies just in case stuff like that happens again that way you can keep the gulp liquid. They also seal better which might also help with the shelf life.

      I ended up keeping it when I put it in the new other jar. 👍

    Same here! I don't have any luck with a bobber fishing for trout. I go with the Carolina rig or the water bobber which works but option one works best for me.

    I always wanted to go trout fishing. I say use what works and clearly for you the bobber did not. Keep them videos coming.

    Ever tried to bobber dog with the float? Its were you raise the float up and bounce the sinker across the bottom, gets your bait down deep and it's a really popular method for steelhead.

      Never heard of it, I will have to google that one. 👍

    I wonder if you would have hooked up if you had more leader from the float so the bait was just above the bottom? Never used a float when trout fishing, but if I can figure it out to minimize snags.... heck yeah!

    Hi Alex. Just wanted to tell you about taking my daughter fishing for stocked trout. We were not having any luck with a float so I switched to a poor mans drop shot. It was so exciting to start getting bites and hear my daughter ask me "Can we do that again?" Keep up the great videos.

    Dude I though t the same thing about bobbers scaring the fish! I haven't caught many on a bobber buy I do want to catch one using a drift float on a river. I love seeing that bobber go down in the water though

      Yeah, I mostly use a wire-stem Thill Turbo Master float dotted down with a few split shot. I'll mend the line as it travels downstream. Had pretty good luck with it so far.

    Love those little 6 spot cases. Mostly for the irony of them at the local "dollar" store. Empty and labeled "tackle box" they sell them for $3. Full of nails and crap and labeled as a "picture hanging kit" they're $1.25... I have a lot of nails and little brackets in the junk drawer with no purpose... 😅
