- This video shows how to make a DIY sabiki rig for catching bait that will save you money and time (check out the way we have a replaceable weight at the end of the Sabiki rig).
Best of all, this method allows you to quickly build your own custom sabiki rig so that you can save money in not buying the expensive ones at the store.
And be sure to watch until the end because there's a tip on how you can make the homemade sabiki rig work better than the store-bought kind.
Here's a list of bait fish that a sabiki rig can catch:
threadfin
pinfish
cigar minnows
croakers
grunts
whitebait
pilchards
mojarra
pigfish
Best of all, you can control the size bait you catch by the size of the hook that you use...
Use a larger hook for bigger bait, and shrink everything if you want to catch the small ones too.

Salt Strong is such an excellent organization and I learn something each and every time I watch your videos! Cannot thank you enough! Thank you
We have been using this rig at the pier alot. We catch more than enough pinfish. usually end up letting some go or sharing them. The reaction on peoples faces when you reel in 2-3 at a time is priceless.
I love the "gulp" idea, I never thought of that before!
Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment. Tight Lines!
I use pieces of shrimp sometimes add to the scent
As usual, very clear instructions. excellent theme. I compare your work and none gets close to yours. Thanks for sharing.

Great video! I’m teaching my 10 year old twins to make & fish sabiki rigs & your technique seems like it will be dead easy for them. Yay little bait factories!
Thanks as always for your excellent, clear tutorials!
The best SABIKI rig and tip I have seen yet.... Simple is always the best... Thanks always enjoy your videos.. Heading to myrtle beach in a week will definitely give these some work
Thanks so much for making time to write this nice comment. Glad to see that you enjoyed this sabiki rig video. Have fun at Myrtle Beach!
was about to purchase some store bought sabiki regs when I ran across this vid. Great info and timely.
Awesome! Glad it was helpful!
I just ran across this channel. I like making my own rigs and have been debating how to do it. This looks simple enough. Thank you.
Glad to see that you're enjoying our channel. Hope you enjoy making your custom sabiki rigs. Tight Lines!
Thank you for all your instructional videos, great DIY Sabiki rig, I pass by schools of bait fish on my flats boat and sometimes they move so fast that you've missed your chance to net them, this is great because you can grab your rod and flick it right to them. Right on!
Salty Beard Sabiki rods help so much. They hide the hooks and the end of the rod it's self acts as a dehooker. Just grab and go. I tie a snap swivel to the end to I can just clip on the rigs.
Excellent. I'll make these up tonight. Thanks.
I never new how to do the hooks seperate to the main line now i do this is brilliant wow thanks so much
Great tip... Love that idea of cutting Gulp fake bait used as piectof squid. Very clever.. Thank you
Excellent video ! Simple rigs are the best ! Very clear instruction and a good tip at the end ! VG
Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment... Tight Lines!
Very nice simple good visual to the point and not going off on a tangent.
super detailed compared to alot of other rig videos ive seen thank you !
I just made this with size 6 hooks and can’t wait to catch some mackerel!
Luke thanx for posting the video, Im gonna go try this thing out on Monday.
Great video, little chunks of fishbites work great and stay on a long time also.
Thanks for making time to leave the helpful comment. Tight Lines!
Nice setup! I'd still put snap swivel on either end so I can pop it on and off as I need bait. Thanks for the vid!
Nice tips dude. One thing I have experimented with when fishing for smelt is a small piece of rig foam on the hook next to the eye, it makes the bait balance mid water a bit like a diver but it gives the bait a very natural presentation. One tip for you is don't cut the Gulp put it on the hook and cut it once its on the hook its easier to handle,, tight lines.
You made it look so simple and you explained it so well I subscribed to your channel to learn more.
I made one after seeing this video, thanks! I put 5 on mine and used 3 different hook sizes, one small, one medium and 2 large for the various species.
Looks good and thx, will definitely tie some up. Great idea to use pieces of old Gulp.
Super practical tips, thanks for sharing
Thanks, just what I was looking for.
I like it . Use it all the time and gets the job done.
Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment Carter!
Thanks for the tips of how to make my own sabiki rigs. They would help me save tons of money 👍
This is a really good video helped me learn how to make my own Sabiki's thanks for taking the time to make this useful video.
Wow this is how I was tought about 50 years ago and we didn't have plastic and used red and white yarn, doubled over in the loop. I still have the pack of yarn my grand ma gave me and caught untold number of squid and other small fish use later as bait. just getting back into fishing after raising family and now wife and I are alone. And I've got time for myself and friends
Great video and tips. I'll be be using this rig very soon. Now I have a use for my tail-bitten Gulp baits! Thanks, and keep up the good work!
Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment Ponce. Yes, a used tail-bitten Gulp bait can go a long way on a sabiki rig for catching bait.... here's a video where I caught 10 pinfish on one single tiny chunk of gulp without ever having to replace it:) www.saltstrong.com/articles/how-to-catch-pinfish/
Awesome, I love making my own rigs and lures, thanks for the video, I will be making a few for big catfish bait. Great video brother
Best explanations on the internet.
Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment. Glad to see that you enjoyed this sabiki rig video. Fish On!
Thank you !! so easy to follow. Can't wait to try new rigs !!
Hi Luke , I’m enjoying your vids immensely ..Thank you . I believe that I’m an above average fisherman at age 85 .My leg issue is keeping me off the Cape Cod Canal and I’m about to pursue porgies/ flounder..I’m excited about this ..Your method of tying this sabiki rig is the way to go ..although 6” isn’t easy to maintain, but you have to get past that first level..Lastly ,you mentioned damaged grubs ending up in gulp juice . If they sell it separately where may I purchase it ? Thanks again, Bob Peck
I fish freshwater, just found they use this subiki rig to catch freshwater bait also. Wanting to try this. It just use the bare hook? Think that may work for freshwater also? Very good video, thanks for sharing.
Great Video .. can we use Sabiki rig with a float if we fish from shore... ? would not that be a better presentation for surface bait fish ?
Great instruction and tips ! Thank you!
Great advice and tutorial! If you don't have gulp you can put little pieces of magic bites or other shrimp cut bait that'll put scent in the water.
Great videos very simple 👏 👌 👍
Great info. This just saved me a bunch of money, was getting ready to buy a store bought setup. Totally unnecessary. 👍
Thanks for this. Those sabaki ones from the stores do add up I bought like 3-4 of them awhile ago $4-7 a piece. Mahalo for this 🤙🤙 aloha
Great job , nice rig happy fishing.
I like to tie a loop with out the hook like you did for the weight. That way you can swap out the hooks when they break or a barracuda decides to bite them in two.
Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment. Tight Lines!
great video for sabiki rig I'm going totry to catch some live bait I'm a googan I got the stuff [24 wellcraft , 300 etec , all tackle, rods and reels] but know how to catch live bait ive caught small grunts do you think dolphin will hit grunts thanks Luke for your time John
Thanks....going to make a 6 hooks rig to catch walleye surf perches and herrings at a local pier.....California
An excellent video and lesson. However, at $1.16 at Walmart I wonder if it's just worth buying them. Of course there is satisfaction in making it as well. I'll probably do both. I always appreciate people that take the time to help others and for that Sir I thank you as well!
Thanks for the tips. This greenhorn needs them!
Thank Salt Strong I'm all about saving money👍 thank you for sharing🎣Fish On!!!!New subscriber.....
Glad to see that you enjoyed the Sabiki Rig making video. Tight Lines!
Cool that you have a terrrazo floor. I live in Florida too but can't convince my wife to just remove the bad tile and keep the original terrazo floor.
Great video.
Hi Luke ,
I’ve been following you for a while and like your approach..Your presentation is do easy and simple. I’m fishing for porgys and flounder and was wondering if size 4 or 6 would suffice using salty squid tentacles ..I really like this setup. Thank you
Thanks for the kind words Robert! The hook size should be chosen based on the size of the bait that you'll be using. So either 4 or 6 could work depending on how big the tentacles are.
Thank you mate
Always just referred to these as gold hook rigs back in the day. I guess someone decided to fancy it up with the sabiki name. The greenies where so greedy we could get away with nothing but the gold hooks. Adding bait of any type was great for attracting little dork jacks or runners.
Thanks for the feedback!
I have a bunch of small hooks laying around. I think I will just use some of those and make one.
I caught some sow flounder and the were spitting up 4" perch. I can catch some perch for bait. Good video.
I hope you enjoy catching bait on your custom made sabiki rig. Tight Lines!
Thanks for the video. Have you tried just making loops with the surgeon knot but without the hooks threaded - similar to the sinker? That way u can switch the hooks, like the sinker, and thread over glow beads and other attractants.
Maybe the hook eye holes are too small ...
Yes, that works great for making dropper rigs. But the reason I didn't do it in this video is because the sabiki hooks had eyelets that were too small to allow a doubled line to go through them.
well done video, clear voice, great attitude for my fav hobby...also. GOoD luck ! zeke
Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment Mark. Glad to see that you enjoyed this sabiki rig making video. Tight Lines!
Will be def doing this 😎
wow very useful.. sir would you guide me to catch fish on salty water on beach
I`m gonna try that rig this Saturday for Croakers and Pin Fish. Thanks for a great video. By the way, between Croaker and Pin Fish, which one you recommend to target Red Fish?
Croakers are hard to beat when going after the big reds. But pinfish are great too... best to have both and see which one works best for the particular day/tide.
Thank you for your input and keep up the great instructional videos.
Will do. Tight Lines!
Hello. Nice video. I wanna try a sabiki rig now... But im confused about something. When you watch video shorts of ppl using them. They never catch more than one fish so why the need for all the extra hooks. I admit im not too experienced yet but it seems strange. Is it just to get the rig noticed? I cant imagine that either cause assoon as the bait hits the surface all the fish in the area look up for it. Anyone can watch this happen
It just depends on how many fish are in the school and if they're tempted to eat.
I need to catch some skip jack herring to catfish with. Fresh water in current? and what kind of bait would you recommend
thanks nice video very helpful going to make one soon thanks be blessed
Glad to see that you enjoyed this sabiki rig making video. Tight Lines!
thanks bro very helpful. now u've give me an idea...i can do the "T knot" as well after tieng the hooks. i can have an equal distance between the hooks and having an equal length of hook line from the main line. thanks.
Hi this setup is working for mackerel ?
Awesome! Thanks.
Great vid
Thanks!
This is so good tip's thank's
I tie the hooks the same as you did the weight. you can change both weights and hooks
Awesome video!
Would you think that this would work off the shore aswell? I live in Australia and really love your videos!!!! Keep up the great tutorials!!!
Use it with a float maybe?
Good tip thanks
No problem 👍
Great tutorial
Ty for the good info but what was the size of the hooks
He says #8
I use this same rig for Spanish Mackerel only I put colored straws on the hook.
I started tying bucktail jigs. I wonder if I tied a couple pieces of hair or some flash if it would catch pilchards. I'm gonna have to test it out and see.
Great idea. That'll prob work too.
Awesome video! I REALLY WANT THAT FOLDING SALT STRONG KNIFE!
Thanks you guys are awesome
Great video!!!
What hook size do you recommend for catching sardines?
Can you clarify the hook size? Those hooks look a lot bigger than the saki with size 4 hooks?
Great video
Thanks SteveO!
did the exact same rig and i caught some mackerel thanks
gonna try it out today. thanks!
GREAT VIDEO, THANK YOU
Love it I did it at Boynton and coughs little pin and blue runner
Fantastic news! Glad to see that you're catching great bait with your home-made sabiki rig. Tight Lines!
Where did you get that awesome knife??
a nice orange is good or orange bead because it looks like the eggs on a sand flea. tiny chunk of fresh shrimp works great too
very good explanation video , thanks

Does the type of weight matter and could you do just a bunch of dropper loops
there are 2 types of white gulp bait. are these baits you use with glow or without glow?
Roughly what size hooks to catch 12inch porgy on the Long Island Sound?
do your surgeon knots on the hooks ever slip and run down to the hook when you're pulling the tag ends to pull it tight?
No. The surgeon knots stay in place once they are pulled tight.
swivel is better for when you are getting bigger bait and more space between the hooks to make sure they dont get off as easy i like using 6 hooks for skipjack because i do commercial trotlines so the faster i get the bait the better. and ya if i can cast net i will but if not sabiki is good alternative.i think you should do little red bead and some of that flash paper stuff i think they make it where its like a sticker so you can easily add it also and also some strands to it. i have had rigs that lose all the extra flash and the hooks never do as good on skipjack at least. though they can still catch its just not as efficient. and when you are trying to bait 600 hooks or 1200 hooks at a time the faster you get the bait in the cooler the better. gl out there its still a good rig just needs the extras though.
Thanks so much for the comment!
I have my sabiki rig and I use it to fish at piers but my recent problems has been that it tangles up pretty easy I'm taking more time in untangling my sabiki then fishing.. any tips??
Jesus Cortez I would use a heavier weight than you normally would. It helps keep the line tight with less tangle's.
jesus Cortez to store it i wrap the rig onto a smalll pc of cardboard then it just unwraps when you need it
I wonder if this would work for freshwater
Bro, you saved my bloody life
Does this work for herring near fish ladder
เยี่ยมมาก
Thanks keep them coming
Probably a silly question I’m a noob - why wouldn’t ya do the same with the hooks as you do with the weight?
And .. I wish I came across this video before I spent monies - thx 👍
great vid and can you catch greenbacks with these hooks?
The Unicorn Squad yeah
