Im glad to see this video from a Texan. Sometimes distance matters especially at low tide. There’s so much to learn about distance casting. You have the right equipment for it. Hope to see more information from you on the subject in the future. Would love to see a series that shows how distance casting can improve your fishing. Lotta guys, usually ones that can’t cast, downplay the importance of long distance.

    This is a good video.
Casting long is a how to thing not a how hard you throw.
I practice once a week or so in a field with a different rod each time for about an hour.
Just laying the lead on the ground and doing the mechanics correctly will easily achieve 100+ yards
200 yards is not out of the question with a back swing and loading the rod correctly either.
I know guys get outrageous distances with pendulum casts but that isn't necessary for fishing.

Hi, well actually John states that the lead should be placed under the rod between the rod tip and your feet to give instant pre load so when you hit the rod the blank is under compression from the start. But, i did enjoy the video as you did cover the important points and i would love to try that 10ft rod on a uk beach, when faced with rough tidal conditions and using big squid baits and what a great conger rod that could be. Unfortunately we don't see tackle from your side of the pond, but i would be interested to know if anyone imports this rod. Regards Bill

Hey there bud, sorry in advance for the headache of a question but I just bought my first conventional reel and I can’t make up my mind on how to spool it. Normally it wouldn’t be a big deal but I have a short window to fish & don’t have time to test different setups because I’m working out of town now. Are you still running 50lb braid w/ a 10ft 50lb mono shock leader these days? And what kind of mono is your shock leader? Copolymer or leader material or….? And how does that knot affect your casting distance? I’m thinking about no shock leader so there’s no knot running through the guides. Just a Fluoro leader outside of the guides during cast. I’m just worried about (1) the knot going through the guides and (2) a braid birds nest. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Oh… and how many ounces are you casting? 3, 4, 5, or 6oz? I’ll be planning on casting 6oz so I’m thinking I need 60lb test to handle that.

  • @ericgangob6030
    @ericgangob6030 4 года назад +1

I noticed that you don't have your thumb on the spool as you cast. I just started using conventional reels. I keep my thumb wet and on the spool as I cast to prevent it from bird nesting. But i see thay you only apply your thumb to stop and lock the bail. Please do tell. Love your videos.

I had to the a closer look, you showed a pic of the guides you recommend, -what I am learning as "K" guides, and
yours appears upside down in the pic, showing the 'K' ramp on topside assuming your holding the pole upright...I may be incorrect, but the line approaches the guide thru the K double arm side. I am redoing a 70's Ambassador pole as a novice right now, that's why I am here subscribing to your video. I am correcting the spine and incorporating the Fuji Theory for spin cast, but I'd love to be able to throw a bait cast like that.

The video you did on reading the surf was also wonderful.
After watching it I took an 8 ft 8 weight Flyrod to the beach and I recognized a cut only about 40 yards from shore.
I waded out 15 to 20 yards and cast a big weighted streamer fly grey and silver.
This resulted in a hit by a 38 inch bull red. It was absolutely fucking cool.
It took me almost 100 yards into the backing and I chased it another 60 yards up and down the beach before landing it 30 min later.
I released it within 2 or 3 minutes.
Had it not been for your video I would never have known that this opportunity was even available so close to shore.

Nice instructional vid! In the process of shopping for a new casting/conventional reel to go on a 12' Penn Battalion. I'll look into what you are recommending in this entire video not just the reel. I currently use Abu Blue Yonder on 12' Battalion and 30lbs mono with a 60lbs mono shock leader and we use fish finder rigs or the cantilever/catapult...I can't recall what the rig is called. I may try the braid/mono shock leader and the rig/leader you recommended. Looks like Ill be able to cast into the second/third gut from the shore using your method. As it is now I wade out quite a ways and maybe get a 40-60yard cast.

I live in the PNW. I have been looking for a long casting rod and reel for king, silver and sturgeon. That Breakaway HDX 13' looks like a great rod. I need something to cast 16 oz's at time. Do you think that will work?

Good work. In my day there wasn't any easy access videos. There was a book, forgot who pend it. Then out to the beach and learned about Duct tape!!! LOL. Then I discovered leather, wohoo!!! I was able to stay a lot dryer after that. When the Doctors release me for normal work I will hopefully have re-tuned the old Penns. Stay safe and Tight lines youngen.

Looks ok, as long as you've got nobody close to you. Pier fishing during summer time, where there's a line of Hornell and Harrington surfrods with Squidders and Jigmasters running 30 feet, this type of casting won't be good. You'll end up snagging someone's grip or worse their line, then all hell breaks out.

Thanks for sharing this! I live in the Colorado mountains, but I’m trying to get into surf fishing. As you can imagine, local resources are few! Appreciate the tips!

It works on regular rods too, obviously not as much distance as a longer one but still pretty good. Great video!

In Bay Area Ca. Jus got a shimano 12k bait runner, should I go with team daiwa rod or phenix surf rod?

Every rod casts a different weight best at certain levels of drop , that bait cannon don't work with any method of distance casting ,fit it as directed by manufacturer instructions and then give it a strong cast but don't release the lever ,you'll notice it's already broke free before you wanted to and you ain't released it to either .if you can bang a weight out then the cannon is no use as it can't hold till you need it to release ,it's gone well before

Do you always hook your bait to your sinker like that for casting? Does the bait just unhook itself once the cast is made or when it goes into the water?

they are known as sputnik weights, surf weights, or spider weights

Love the spider hook to the bait.. does it just naturally unhook it self in the current? Do you have a video of this setup? I found the spider weights but an idea on leader length or how you tie in the weight would be awesome 👌. I'll be down next month near the state park.. hoping to get something bigger than my 3 year old! 😂
