  • One of the most common questions asked in Guild Wars 2 is what to do with unidentified gear and what salvage kits are best for different types of gear. Knowing how to salvage gear correctly is very important for gold-making in Guild Wars 2. This video will provide you with a simple and concrete guide to salvaging different types of gear, so you can get a good yield from your gear without going through an extremely complicated process. After using this system for a little bit, you’ll have it memorized and it will become second nature.

    I'm happy you mention that selling masterwork gear to vendors is an option. People have bashed me in the past for mentioning that. And while it does take extra effort, given you ought to identify gear before you sell it and that is inventory intensive, it's generally the best economic outcome. With the current tier 5 prices, I think it's more profitable to vendor masterwork gear and then buy materials off the trading post, but most people are just too lazy to do it. (With that said you also do occasionally get tier 6 materials and charms from salvaging).
    But I think new players who may be searching for this video, may be obliged to go through the extra work for the best economic outcome.

    I follow this with one key difference. I use my mystic forgestones and cheap exotic weapons to try to get the Mystic Infusion and random precursors, after 40 or so I got the precursor for an underwater weapon ~15g. I already have good gold inflow from fractal cms, tier 4's and recs as well as alts though so the loss in gold of 30-40 s/ exotic weapon doesn't hurt much at all.

    First of all, thanks for answering comments too. Your insight on this has been super helpful.
    On to my question.
    The advice I was given was “if you can only buy one, buy runic” as far as spending on gems. Then just using Runic for rares. Is this accurate? Is using Runic on rares considerably worse than a Silver-fed if I don’t have one? I still receive exit and even receive multiple sometimes. Does the 5% difference apply to the ectoplasm or just the chance to get a better ingredient (getting an orichalcum instead of mythril)? I tried to find out but couldn’t.

    • @abree107
      @abree107  Год назад +1

      If by runic you mean runecrafter's, then no you shouldn't be using that on rares. That's pretty much just going to delete potential gold.
      Runecrafter's has a 20% higher chance to salvage the runes and sigils inside gear, so you will get slightly more charms and symbols, but it's worse for everything else. The loss of the 5% chance to get rarer materials applies to T5/6 materials, decreasing your chances to receive orichalcum instead of mithril as you said. That's not the biggest deal in and of itself. The problem is that ecto drops seem to follow their own calculation that isn't tied to that number. At least, if it is I can't figure it out from the data I've looked at. When you salvage rares with silverfed, you have a decent chance to get 0 or 1 ecto, with a small chance to get 2 or 3. I can't tell you offhand how much each number's likelihood changes when you use a runecrafter's kit, but I can tell you there's a decent decrease from the 0.85 ecto average you'd get with silver-fed. Because ectos contain the majority of the value from rares, it's better to pay the extra 30c and forego a small number of T6 drops for a decent increase to ecto drop rates. The extra ectos will definitely give you more in value than the 35c or so you give up for using the silver-fed kit.
      Now I do agree with the advice to prioritize buying runecrafter's over the others, because, as you can see in the diagram in the video, there's equivalents for the other kits and not for runecrafter's. Copperfed is the same as basic kits, and although it's a pain in the ass if you farm a lot, you can buy 10 of those every time you need to salvage blues. Mystic salvage kits last quite a while and for a lot of players will make getting silver-fed unnecessary. If you farm a lot or have run out of Mystic Forge stones, you can still buy master's salvage kits you use instead of silver-fed if you want. You don't get as many rares anyway, so 1-2 master's salvage kits would be all you'd need to carry. Runecrafter's adds a new capability to your account; copper-fed and silver-fed add convenience.
      My recommended order would be
      Runecrafter's>Copper-Fed>>>Silver-Fed
      (Unless you have a ton of Mystic Forge stones, then forget silver-fed altogether)

    Hi! If I dont craft anything that uses the materials obtained after salvaging greens and blue (Like only crafting gen 3 leggys) do i refine the mats and sell them or just sell the unidentified gear? Nice video btw!!

    • @abree107
      @abree107  Год назад

      That will depend on the prices and how youre selling it, but if you're talking about just selling stuff on the TP, blues and rares should always be worth salvaging. Greens are a little bit more inconsistent, so I guess you could list them. If you ever need charms and symbols for crafting though, it's worth salvaging for them generally.

      Crafting items with them to either use yourself (best option) or to sell on the trading post (second option) is what you'd want to do if you could. At least refine them before selling on the trading post if you can't come up with something to craft out of them. Good specific options that come to mind are lumps of mithrillium which can be crafted into deldrimor steel ingots for profit and drizzlewood coast material donations, which use the unrefined materials you get from gear. It's included in my daily gold video.

    IMO it depends. If your goal is to make only gold then you can salvage those rare or exotic gear by selling those t6 materials on the trading post but if you are focusing on making legendary weapons, tier 6 materials are really expensive and you need 250 each of those. What I do is sell the green and blue straight and occasionally open rare one to salvage then rest I sell.

    Watched similar guides before but this one is very clear and includes exotic gear, great stuff.
    Is there a good breakpoint for cash values for salvage vs sell? I know it'll vary based on material market prices, but I've been going with:
    Blue: always salvage copperfed
    Green: always salvage silverfed
    Yellow: salvage mystic if >24s, if >24s sell on TP
    Orange: salvage mystic if >50s, if >50s sell on TP
    I always check blues and greens on TP before I salvage because I've seen some have crazy prices on the TP before but it usually feels like a waste of time, at most I'll see like a 4s green.
    Also do you have recommendations for ascended gear?

    • @abree107
      @abree107  Год назад +3

      First off, never use silverfed for greens, you'll just be deleting gold at that point.
      For rares, the price of the ecto is what matters, not a particular silver value. The rule that most people use is if the piece of gear is worth significantly more than 1 ecto, then list it. Nowadays, that basically boils down to just listing greatswords and salvaging everything else.
      For exotics, the value of the rune/sigil is what's important, not a particular silver value. For example, an exotic that costs 60s is worth salvaging if the rune inside is worth 65s. Another exotic that costs 40s would not be worth salvaging if the rune inside is worth 3s. When you use a black lion kit, you basically want to add the value of an ecto and the rune/sigil together to determine what's worth salvaging. Or just salvage armor with black lion kits and list weapons and you'll generally do okay.
      If the ascended gear comes from chests and is in the form of a craftable ascended item (i.e. anything called "zojja's" is a craftable zerker item), then disassembling them for research notes is a really cheap way to get research notes if you need them for a legendary. If you don't need research notes, then I'd say just hold onto your ascended salvage kits for rings. It's kind of weird but salvaging most ascended gear doesn't really give any more value than the 1g you'd get for vendoring it. So it's research notes or just throw it on an alt for gearing in the future.

      @@abree107 Oop, I'd meant to reply to this when you responded, was looking for videos on gold farming from unidentified gear (buying gear on TP and processing for gold) and came across this again so I'll respond now. First just wanted to say thanks for the detailed response. Silverfed was a mistake, I meant runecrafter's. That rare sell price was actually based on relative ecto value I had just forgotten that's why I'd settled on that number. Exotic advice was new to me and really helpful :) thanks again for all the great guides.
      I'm sure you have more ideas than time but if you are looking for ideas, here are some methods of gold making that I'd be interested to see you cover in the future (I've done some data collection myself but am very novice at it and not an Excel wizard):
      - Gear processing on the TP (I think you mentioned this before as a great gold making tool but everyone guards their secrets and data so maybe you don't wanna share the secret sauce, which is fine haha)
      - Crafting (this is what I'm most interested in as it's a more 'RP friendly' gold making process as compared to flipping things on the TP that just feels like taking advantage of people
      - Rewards tracks in PvP and WvW. The PvP is more interesting to me because it's the game mode I play most besides open world, but I know WvW is more popular.
      - Box/bag opening characters (ideal level, how magic find affects or doesn't affect things, etc.)
      Anyway, mostly just wanted to say thank you :)

    • @abree107
      @abree107  Год назад +2

      @@battlebots1 Regrettably, I'll have to decline most of those.
      I don't really support people that process gear on that level. It's not a very healthy thing integrity wise and it's more carpal tunnel inducing than 3-ticking in runescape. I much more support methods that can be fun or at least fit into fun ways of playing the game. I know multiple people that have lost interest in the game as a direct result of getting into gear processing and I just can't bring myself to do anything more than acknowledge it exists.
      I'm not sure what you mean by "RP friendly". If anything, buying an item instead of crafting it yourself results in you overpaying way more often than instabuying a random uncraftable item does. And flipping actually decreases margins and volatility in prices, due to competition. Even that said, if someone wants to instabuy something instead of buy order, that's really their problem and not yours. In the real world, express shipping costs more, there's fees to transfer money electronically if you want to get it faster than your standard ACH transfer, and people who don't price compare multiple retailers end up paying more for the same item than people that do. Impatience costs you, and it actually tends to cost you more if the item was craftable than if it wasn't. But I might end up dedicating a short video to crafting in the future...
      Reward tracks are pretty easy. Do all the nonrepeatable ones first and then you can reference a site like [fast] farming to see the values of the repeatable ones. I'd typically say gift of Battle is best for repeating in WvW, but for PvP I have no idea. They're not good ways to make gold, but they're not bad either. There's not much to say. Slap on festival and xp booster if you want to, then play the game.
      And finally, the bag opening thing really only applies to a handful of bags. Unless you're farming silverwastes, I'd say it's not worth worrying about. The vast majority of bags give level 80 loot no matter what character you open them on. And the only bags affected by magic find are ones that have it explicitly stated in the text when you hover over it.
      That's not to say the rest of those topics are pointless, there's just not enough substance for me to make a video about them that's actionable. They might end up being little parts of future videos or maybe they'll be covered if I end up doing more discussion-themed videos like Teapot does.

    • @battlebots1
      @battlebots1 Год назад +1

      @@abree107 Well thank you again for the detailed response. Appreciate all the info.
      Fair enough on the gear processing. I think I was mostly interested in it since I started hitting a point in the game where unlocks required gold, you'd mentioned it was one of the best gold acquisition methods, and to me the "labor" of processing items felt more authentic than the "labor" of providing convenience through flipping on the TP. The "RP friendly" thing you're right about, that's just a me problem. Just felt like I was playing stock market and didn't vibe, but either way I'm certainly not judging anyone who does flip. End of the day I'm still just trying to figure out the ways that are most fun for me to make gold while still being relatively - or maybe just loosely - efficient. Thanks again!

If you're asking about getting a larger inventory then I'd recommend (in this order) going for 20 slot bags, looking up the 2 achievements that give free 32 slot bags, buying bag slot expansions and filling them with 20 slot bags, then crafting 28/32 slot boreal bags. That's the most cost effective ordef of options.

    I always knew you should open them for better outcome.
    But it's such a pain in the @ss when they fill your inv and you can't salvage all to make room cause they will also salvage. They just frustrate me so much with all the space opening them takes. I even tried storing them in my bank to do them in bulk when I was ready. But even that was a pain having to get to a bank just to make room when I could salvage otherwise.
    I'm really awful with inv management and have always just sold them so they are out of the way and I can salvage the gear in my inv.
    My impatience with inv mngmnt is so bad that I have max bank space and it's all full and I have like 246? bag space on 2 chars and half of it is also just full of junk including stacks and stacks of unopened loot bags. Like once or twice a year I'll just sit down and spend all my time opening all my loot bags but it takes quite a bit of time but it is really nice with all the extra space.
    I would love to have a person sit me down and go over cleaning up all my inventories with me XD Tell me what I do and don't need and such.
    I just checked today and I have over 10k hours played in the past 9-10 years.

      What i do for management is use the Invisibility bag and put that bag on the bottom.
      Then make stacks of 1 for blue,green,yellow unidentifieds inside it so when you get them they always stacks up there.
      Put them in the bank when you almost have a stack of any.
      Log in on a mule character and just grab them out of the bank and keep doing that untill you want to open them.

      I have the opposite problem. I obsessively compulsively clear my inventory. Open all bags, id all gear, slavage, and deposit almost as soon as I get a chance to, then sell all junk items to the next npc on the way. I also insta sell/buy and collect all from tp because I can't stand the red icon on the top of my screen. The up side is that I never need to buy bag slots and can get away with cheap, low capacity bags. The downside is that it's not gold or time efficient at all.

Ectos are used in a lot of important crafting recipes. You can also salvage them with mystic/silverfed kits and get crystalline dust, which is used in material promotion recipes and for crafting as well. Salvaging the ectos is also a really fast way to get luck.
      If you're already max luck and have all the legendaries you want, you can always find profitable items to craft that use ectos as an ingredient, which will further propagate your profit.

      @ThunderFart I'd only sell them through player to player trading, in which case you'd probably need a few stacks go make it worth your while.
      If you're putting your ectos on the TP, you may as well not be salvaging your gear to begin with in all honesty. You could just list the unids, take the loss up front, and call it a day. The whole point behind processing the gear yourself is to use some of what comes out if it, rather than sell the gear, get taxed, and buy materials post-tax with that gold.

    I dunno how everyone says you get more gold for opening and salvaging everything. Selling green ones outright nets 2.5 silver, and ive never gotten a piece of gear or material from salvaging it that sells for that much. Unless you get really lucky and get a rare from opening which doesnt make up for it

    • @abree107
      @abree107  Год назад +4

      Currently, selling a green unid nets 2s exactly, not 2.5. People rarely pay attention to charms and symbols that come from greens, which are worth quite a bit. Some are around 1g each. That's probably what you're missing. Obviously the occasional rare contributes too.

I can tell you that I stopped logging into them consistently after 2 months or so and I made more gold from EoD investments with them than with their login rewards. With MCs as low as they are now, alt accounts aren't really as much of a gold mine as they may have been in the past. I'm a few days off 3 months since I last logged into any of mine.
      The amount of gold I've made off alt accounts is pretty negligible compared to all the other sources and while alt accounts can be nice to have, you definitely don't need them to make gold. I know people have spread rumors that rich players make their money from alt accounts and all I can really say is that's simply not the case. I know 2 rich players that made a significant portion of their wealth off alts and the rest of the rich players I know used mostly other methods.
