    8:50 the meaning of vacuum impregnation is to allow the resin to enter the capillaries of the wood ... The air comes out quickly, the resin enters slowly, after equalizing the pressure, you need to keep the wood in the resin for 12-24 hours ...

    • @OldRusty
      @OldRusty  Год назад +2

      In reality, the handle was soaked for about 3 days. With periodic pumping of air and at normal pressure.

      My man...if the air comes out of the wood, what do you think will fill the void it leaves behind? A black hole?...The air that is pulled out is directly replaced by resin, otherwise it wouldnt come out. No need to leave it in for another 24 hours

    Mr,Old Rusty 日本語で失礼。私はこの修復画像を見て大変残念に思いました。
    これは『修復』ではなく『作り変え』です。
    包丁(出刃)を直すのではなく、“ナイフ”に作り変えているだけです。
    刃の部分の黒い所の意味、なぜ日本で刃を砥石がメインで刃を出すのか
    勉強してから包丁の修繕や修理と言った言葉を使ってください。
    ただ、持ち手の部分の制作に関しては“流石”の一言です。
    長文にて失礼しました。

      コメントありがとうございます。よく包丁を修理している動画を見かけます。このナイフは、折れた刃を修理した後、再び焼き入れをしたものです(動画には写っていません)。その後、ブレードの形状はかなり変化しています。これは、多層構造で薄い鋼材であることが影響していると思われます。ジオメトリーの復元に多くの時間を費やした。とはいえ、貴重な体験ができました。

    • @OldRusty
      @OldRusty  2 года назад

      About the liquid wrote in the comments - it is a polymer analogue of "cactus juice". The balls are also a polymer - when heated to 80 degrees it becomes soft for about 5 minutes. Just in case you have to take the knife apart for maintenance or repair.

    Very nice job, I really like it. You are a real professional. There is one single thing I would like to mention.
    I noticed you weare gloves on most of your operations: drilling, grinding, filing or any other operations you do there.
    Have you ever imagined what will happen is the drill or the grinder catches your gloves? I will tell you: it will remove your arm from the shoulder FOR GOOD. Please, get a second and think: if you wear gloves, your arm may be removed from your shoulder for good. If you DO NOT WEAR gloves, you may lose one or two fingers. What do you prefer?
    Sorry for my warning, maybe the tone of my message is a little bit tough, all I wanted to do was to draw your attention on this issue. Take very much care of your health and safety coz of you don't do it, nobody else will.
    Thank you for reading.
    God bless you!

    • @OldRusty
      @OldRusty  Год назад +1

      Thanks for the advice about the gloves. I try to use very carefully and lately only good quality gloves are very comfortable for my hands and good protection from cuts when working on the tape grinder. On powerful equipment, I try to work with minimal risk of getting my clothes or gloves in it :)

    Some of the points show lack of experience. When I saw you glue in that spacer I wondered how are you going to shape it since heat of grinding that brass instantly destroys the epoxy - as shown in the video. Handsanding on that blade is just bad - you destroyed the bevel line but didn't achieve the flat surface. I'd either polish the bevel only leaving the patina untouched or polished those surfaces separately (with a sand paper wrapped around something solid like a drill bit).
    On the other hand - stabilisation of that wood looks decent and in the and it's a nice looking handle. And I guess the knife is more functional than before, so that's good.

    • @OldRusty
      @OldRusty  2 года назад +1

      You're right, I don't have much experience with Japanese knives. Now I already look at this restoration differently.
