I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well ruclips.net/user/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.
@Matt C I have to 2000+ with just my rods and reels that's not counting in my baits, hooks, sinkers, hand tied flys, and other tackle. I know you didn't ask me but, it can add up fast
If I had teachers like you Roland in school I'd have been a straight A Student. You keep us so engaged in the subject and make it enjoyable. Thanks for the lessons.
Have a great time with your new abu outfit. Just bought something similar and can't wait to use it. By the way, wives who put up with our fishing "addiction" are amazing! Love them always.
Nancy Neville, Learning to use a Baitcasting Reel will test your nerves, until you find the best way for You to cast. I learned at the instruction of an old timer who walked me through the Learning process over the phone. Try using a sidearm or under cast. Make sure the reel brake is set a bit tight so you don’t end up with Backlash/Birds Nest. Once you get the hang of casting you will find yourself backing off the reel brake which allows for longer casting distance. Watch videos and practice casting before hitting the water. Frustration is your only enemy. Good Luck. 🤠🎣
What I love about these films is that the professionals readily admit to all the mistakes they’ve made about the do’s and don’ts of fishing; Maryland wishes you the best Roland
You have tought me everything! Didn't have a dad! Mid too late 8o's, I would watch you and all the fishing shows! I'm from Michigan and got stationed in Jacksonville NC! Never fished salt or brackish! Got my first bait casterin 92! I'd watch you Sunday, go out in front of barracks and practice trying to hit a bucket! Thank you, for teaching me how to teach my son! PS. My son had his first 5 pounder at age 4, all by his self, picked the frog seen the fish casted to it! Hooked netted all of it! Miss my Rolland hat, first bass boat! Learned to turn hat around all bye my self! The hard way! God bless you
The fishing tips help beginners and old-timers remember what they forgot and I am in the latter group. I like watching you love what you do so many of us get stuck in jobs we may not like. Good luck and stay safe.
Hi Roland: A very timely video. Just bought a new casting rod and reel and this will help me as I add line and get ready to use it. I'm 70 years old and still learning. Thanks for the help! It is very much appreciated.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you for the tips Roland. I have watched you since I was a kid with my father. I’m so happy I find your channel on RUclips ! I love fishing and I now enjoy teaching others to fish but I will never stop learning!
Just learned how to use a bait caster this year. Really like em. So glad i decided to go in that direction. Years back all I used was a Zebco push button I never liked Spinning and so push button was my fave. Today I use Spinning for Salt and I throw bait casters for fresh. Major improvements have made things easier on us these days. Thanks Roland.
Hey Mr. Roland, Gary Howington has told me a good bit of fishing stories and couple about hunting turkeys haha. I’m currently stationed up here in Jacksonville, NC but prior I use to cut all of Gary’s grass back home in Hokes Bluff, but hopefully someday I’ll get to meet you. You’ve always been a great role model to me and my style and love for bass fishing. I really enjoy the videos with all the tips/tricks. Take care and God Bless and Roll tide!
Great instruction, Roland. Thank you. Also, a very important point, (and although you didn't talk about it, you showed it perfectly), is the position of the reel and hand before the cast, with the reel in a nearly vertical position. In this case, with a right hand retrieve reel, and casting off your right side, the reel handle is positioned UP. This applies only to the overhead cast which you demonstrated perfectly.
I tighten my spool tension knob till it touches, then back off on it and wiggle the spool till it makes a clicking sound, so it's free. Don't use the magnetic adjustment at all. When I change rods I make easy casts to see how much thumb pressure to use. I don't like fussing with my reels all day. Awesome video to help people when they start off. Roland your a great wealth of information.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I watched your video and immediately started overhand casting down my long narrow driveway. Success! Can't wait to get out on the water.
I just re-lined my bait caster, I used your suggestion on how to line it. I don't like fishing with bait casters because of backlash so I hope this helps me enjoy them more.
Mr. Martin, I usually catch you on your Fishing with Roland Martin Show. Happy to learn I can see and learn more about fishing from you here on the RUclips! I appreciate ya! Thank you!
i have to say roland that even tho i cant afford your setup, that was the best instruction on casting ive ever heard , especially the wall. well done and thank you. gonna have to spool it up again .
Only used spinning reels my entire life until a few weeks ago when I purchased my first bait caster. The release point is my biggest issue so far and this explains why so well.
Thanks again for the lessons Professor Martin! I gave up baitcasters in the late 70s because of backlash, but returned a while back because they’ve advanced so far..total different ballgame now. I still occasionally have to mumble under my breath while pulling on a nest😑😂,but they really have some great advantages.🎣. Happy Holidays Mr. Martin! God Bless you and your family
Good one, sir! That last point about the gentle release of the spool is a great one that others don't mention. Sometime I get in a hurry and "crack the whip" with my rod; instant bird nest. Also the last part about, even the old pro gets one now and then is great.
Hello Roland, I've been learning to catch bass from you for over 30 years now, so glad I found your y/t channel. Would be awesome to see a video with you and Jimmy Houston, or Hank Parker. Be well, be safe. Love ya
Let me say that back in the late 80s and early 90s baitcasters did not have all the adjustments that they do today. I learned how to throw with using my thumb. I also would practice casting in my backyard. The first time I went fishing with it I got frustrated and throw it to the side. The next day when I went back out all I took was baitcasters so I was forced to figure it out if I wanted to have fun that day on the water. Even with all the new technology I still stick with my thumb. I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday.
every time i watch one of your videos, i want to go fishing!! i have been watching you since the early 90's. keep it going you are the man!! P.S. I want to win a fishing trip with you!!!
I stopped backlashing once I switched to braid. Even if that wasn’t the actual solution, it helped me along well enough until I got used to using a bait caster. Thanks for the history lesson, Roland. 👍🏼
You covered some things others haven’t. Starting fishing again after about a 40 + year hiatus, I had to re-learn the bait caster . Everyone I have watched have added something and now I seldom backlash, and when I do it is because I haven’t paid attention to what I was doing.
I'm dinasour still throwing the old Ambassador s but lot of them are wore out guess it's time to get into this century & try some these new rod & reels - Thanks for the informative video Roland!
*Awesome reel, **enjoyable.fishing** recommend especially for the price! No problems so far. Reeled in a 14lb laker yesterday and performed great. (5-10 min reel in time) Love the drag adjustment.*
But thank you for the information on the new arils yeah I have over spooled overfilled and yeah I get back life but that's something that you learned over the years thank you mr. Martin for the information and the five techniques I will always remember that thank you once again I love your videos and the techniques that you give in each one of the videos
Hey Roland glad I found you on RUclips. I grew up watching you fish and became a great fisherman for it. I miss Sunday morning fishing way more the Saturday morning cartoons. Talk to Bill and the infisherman guys to start up on RUclips. I can hope
I enjoy the video thank you for answering some of the questions that I have Ben ass before I have several baitcasters but the my all-time favorite I retired it it was a daiwa procaster PL 1500 I love that real and I used it for a long time probably better than 20 years but my problem with it is once you cast and engage the gear the gear handle Will roll backwards and will not stop
For a long time, when I was learning, I never understood that you have to use your thumb on every cast. I was using the baitcaster reel like you would a Zebco 202. Release the spool and let her rip! I usually had to switch to a backup spinning rod soon after. Once I learned to use my thumb, probably from a Roland Martin TV show, I could cast darn near anything anywhere. I now can use baitcasters just about anywhere, if I'm paying attention.
Good point about thumb use. I think many people could be afraid to touch the line on the spool as it is flowing out at an extremely high speed, because of possible thumb burns. You just have to take it step by step, feeling the line on the edge of the spool, with varying degrees of pressure, and soon your inhibitions about thumb injury/burns will go away. Rarely will a person ever burn a thumb.
Hey I’m a old timer too. I remember those old Garcia reels. Still have a few laying around. Fished against you back in 70’s in the NBA. Back when entries was 400.00 lol you remember winning at Kentucky lake in 79 when water was up above flood stage? Heck of a tournament. Think you won 2500 which was big bucks back then.
I was planning to search this topic because I just got a casting reel and kept getting backlash. I watched a couple of Roland's videos and this popped up as a recommendation. I'm pretty sure Google can read minds!
Worked great. Now I can wing it all the way across the neighbors yard, hook onto their swingset and watch the kids go running when they see it swinging on it’s own. Thanks Roland 😏
Ambassador 4500 c, not 4600 c like Roland said. I still use mine. I have the magnetic type and they really are much better when you have them all set up properly. Still use monofilament but thinking about trying braided line.
thank you roland, so much good stuff!👍 As always, perfect your basics and it will always turn out good, practice, practice, practice. Pay attention grasshoppers, the master is speaking. 🙀😸 Sorry sir, I couldn't resist. 🎣👍😸😊😎🎣

I'd give up all my tackle to fish with this guy. Great video, awesome information, and great teacher. Thank you Mr Martin for sharing your knowledge.
It would be fun to fish with Mr. Martin
Sonnnn!
@Matt C I have to 2000+ with just my rods and reels that's not counting in my baits, hooks, sinkers, hand tied flys, and other tackle. I know you didn't ask me but, it can add up fast
That could be a very expensive fishing lesson.
Same

Roland puts out this video I await my Abu-garcia black max rod and reel my wife bought me for Xmas. My first baitcaster. So excited
Have a great time with your new abu outfit. Just bought something similar and can't wait to use it. By the way, wives who put up with our fishing "addiction" are amazing! Love them always.
Your gonna love it.
Enjoy the info, but like using the open reel, couldn't get used to the bait cast reels
Just got the same for fathers day

Nothing better than getting tips from a legend.
Solid straight forward instruction , from a wise fisherman. Thank you, Mr.Martin .
Best anti backlash video I have ever seen. Thank you so very much.
I have a reel so backlashed from last season that I hung it in the garage and stare at it as I walk by sometimes.
I have one backlashed in the garage right now. It's an old ambassador from 2004 i hadn't realized they were so old and outdated
Thank you for the tips Roland. I have watched you since I was a kid with my father. I’m so happy I find your channel on RUclips ! I love fishing and I now enjoy teaching others to fish but I will never stop learning!

Grew up on ya Roland, thank you for the memories, and great content now too
Thanks for the video... I pass em along to others every week to get them excited too..
The point for releasing tip is awesome. It really helped me.with overhand casting.
I can watch Roland Martin all day. Great videos.

Great tips
Thanks again.

Thank you Roland. I am new to using a bait casting reel and I need all the help that I can get.

Thank you Roland all your content is GREAT keep it up

I've won 3 different tournaments in extreme flood conditions. I know exactly what to look for!
@@RolandMartinOutdoors that would make a great video
Roland you ought to do another video on the side and underhand roll cast.
Thanks for sharing Roland👍👍👍
Best casting explanation EVER !! Thanks RM
Great informative video, going to have try the wall. Looking forward to watching more of your videos on you tube.
That is so well explained, thanks!
Roland you are the man!!!!!
Great info as usual. Channel is looking great!!
I was planning to search this topic because I just got a casting reel and kept getting backlash. I watched a couple of Roland's videos and this popped up as a recommendation. I'm pretty sure Google can read minds!
Thanks great vid buddy your one of my favorite fishermen out there and a absolutely legend
👍 Great tips I am just learning on the baitcaster set ups.
Thank you Roland great video as always!
I gave up spinning gear in 1980. Pay attention, boys, this Martin fella knows what he's talking about! 😁
I also pretty much gave up spinning gear about 20 years ago. Love Baitcasters!!
Thanks for the information, to help me cast. And stop backlash
Excellent. I needed this. Thanks for the tips.
Worked great. Now I can wing it all the way across the neighbors yard, hook onto their swingset and watch the kids go running when they see it swinging on it’s own. Thanks Roland 😏
I'm gonna buy a Roland Martin combo Rod and reel from Bass Pro Shops for Christmas for myself you're awesome
Is that what he was using ? I must have missed him saying what specific tools he was using.
What a pro. Total lesson
Thank u for your videos. Mr.martin
I rarely backlash now. Baitcasters are fun to use when you gwt the hang of them. Thank you for the video!
@Nickhead87 crappie panfish light spinning gear!
Great teaching video, this helps me, and will better help me explain to my son. Thx
Ambassador 4500 c, not 4600 c like Roland said. I still use mine. I have the magnetic type and they really are much better when you have them all set up properly. Still use monofilament but thinking about trying braided line.
I once backlashed so bad a robin laid eggs in it.
Smartass👍
Did they hatch?
Rodless Reel yes. They made nests in my other reels. 😂😂😂. Obviously I’m kidding.
clarky294 i know lol. Was funny hehe.
Robin's Nest - MY late mom's fav restaurant. She died yesterday.
thank you roland, so much good stuff!👍 As always, perfect your basics and it will always turn out good, practice, practice, practice.
Pay attention grasshoppers, the master is speaking. 🙀😸 Sorry sir, I couldn't resist. 🎣👍😸😊😎🎣
I agree, 1/8 oz Rooster Tails Shred and I use spinning reels for them. If you're on a boat, have baitcasters with your heavy lures and spinning reels with your light lures. Rodless reels? That's a new one for me, what is that?
Roland - please do a video on properly tying a fluorocarbon leader to braid.
Double uni knot
I found a bag of baitcasting reels laying at a dumpster when I was dropping my garbage one day. Every single one was bird nested in an incredible fashion. All of them had cheap mono on them. Probably $200 worth of reels. All are in top-performing condition now.
Thank you for the lesson.
thanks for the tips roland!!
So thats been my problem. i fish my bait caster like my spinning reels. i never release at 12 oclock. but i will now. Thanks for the tip!
Great tutorial Roland!
Thanks Roland!
This is excellent !
Roland Martin how do I adjust my spool for a fast turning spool without backlashing
Awesome Video Old teacher but what about the more expensive reels that have the adjustable internal magnets. Whats the best solution for those and how do they fit into the rules.
I have 2 reels both the same but the tension settings have to be different or there's a problem. Thank you Roland never heard of the wall
Great teacher
