Based on the X-Men comic book, it is the first fighting game produced by Capcom using characters under license from Marvel Comics. Released around the time of the mid-1990s X-Men animated series, the game features voice actors from the series reprising their roles. The game's plot is based on the "Fatal Attractions" story from the comics - players control one of the X-Men or their enemies in their fight against the villain Magneto. They face each of the other characters in the game in best of three one-on-one fighting matches, before battling Juggernaut and Magneto.
The gameplay has much in common with Capcom's previous fighting games, Super Street Fighter II Turbo and Darkstalkers. Children of the Atom adds a combo system that features long combos that can even be performed in mid-air. Also featured in the game are various tactical maneuvers, including the ability for characters to roll. Children of the Atom introduced multi-tiered fighting environments in which the ground would crumble and characters would fall into lower parts of the level. These concepts and the fast pace of the game would provide the basis for Capcom's Marvel vs. Capcom series, which started with the game's successor X-Men vs. Street Fighter.

I'm not big on the comics, so my mind was blown when I just learned that Cyclops ricocheting his optic blasts is actually a thing.

Too bad some moves never made it into Marvel vs Capcom 2, especially for Silver Samurai & Spiral.
The moves or the character itself?
Samurai Shadows mia like, Sentinels other drones attack, Body dive and Rotator foot along with Storms Gale winds forward or back. Marvel Vs Capcom 2 is great but missing too many animations and moves.

When will ANYONE show Storm using more of all forms of Heat♨️,Fire🔥 , Solar and Heat Waves☀️☄, Melting instead of Freezing.🌡⛱. I'm so sick of the the boring⚡🌫⛈🌬❄🌊. They should do battle of Storm vs. Magneto, Bobby, Firestorm, Human Torch, and Sunfire. That would really test how much of a Omega Mutant she is...if any. Let's face it, Storm will NEVER get the creativity in Motion Pictures, Animation and Comic as other Top characters..Magneto, Pheonix, Iceman, Wolverine, Rogue...

I kinda like Akuma's more shadowy aesthetic in this game. No Shun-Goku-Satsu yet, though.

I think it's partly because Akuma never had a portrait for ST or COTA, it wasn't until Alpha that we got to see his big ugly mug close up and his character fleshed out 😂 As cool as Akuma was (and still is) when he first appeared, I get a disconnect when I look at his sprite in ST and COTA.
Not a fan of when they blend Marvel with Capcom characters. Would like a Marvel fighting game like Injustice that only has characters from that pariticular franchise

I inadvertently picked up a Sega Netlink setup for the Saturn years ago. It was mixed in with a box of parts I picked up on eBay. I'm not sure what it could do now, but I need to play around with it just for the nostalgia.

@@partofthetribe3277 I think it was mostly just for internet access. Looked similar. Came with a mouse+keyboard adapter, and I think they made a mouse+keyboard with Saturn ports ... need to do more research on it. Kinda just tossed it in a closet since it's just a 56k modem

Nah, this one is pretty old and from the arcade version. I need to re-do it with a better frame rate and higher resolution. I was literally thinking about that today because of the X-Men 97 show. Would be a good idea to add those two from a console version or something.

@@Brazil144hopeful They let it out for Arcade1Up to make a cabinet for it, but still not any any consoles currently. Expensive, but it does have all the VS games before it.
I have it on the Dreamcast, 360, and that awful iOS port. I keep meaning to do a video on the mobile version ...

From a story perspective yeah, but all the "X-abilities" in the context of this game cost super meter to use. They work kind of like EX moves in Street Fighter, Darkstalkers, etc. His whip grabs are all just regular moves

Yeah it’s like the prototype Marvel vs Capcom. I remember printing off the Akuma code for this on GameFAQs. I’d take it to the arcade and it’d manage to work like half of the time if I was lucky!

How was everyone able to do this without analog sticks on the controller?
I can’t play these with analog sticks. Fight sticks preferred, but I still use the d-pad if I’m using a regular controller

For real. I missed that cartoon and loved this game! I could only beat it with Storm, though. She was so God tier.
This was before marvel had to sell out to Disney so they could actually make good game's. Now there just using these characters to push there feminist and LGBT lifestyles with the movies they putting out.

Now these dudes have infiltrated Xmen the animated series with a new LGBTQ1 agenda by mAking Morph non-binary even tho its supposed to be based off xmen '97 whr that word did not exist!!!!
