    Hello! 👋🏻 Thank you for reacting to my video! I didn’t really understand the … centimorgan(?) thing at the time so that’s really good info! Also really interesting that Irish people don’t get the best results! So funny to watch the video back actually as it is a few years old and I’ve definitely come along in editing since. Big thing for me was when you said you weren’t sure which one I was talking to - that’s really helpful feedback in terms of improving clarity through editing going forward. 🙏🏻 Loved your commentary anyway and thanks for the explanation on the tree and how it works, keep up the good work! 🙌🏻

      Last reply 😂 I did my DNA test about 2 years before that video and mostly joked about not wanting to be English (which was a joke 😂😂) and I did a video since using some of MyHeritage’s other features where I discuss checking out my family’s own family tree documentation but other than that I kind of hit brick walls. Anyway! Loved the video 👏🏻

      Hey Clare, Glad you enjoyed my reaction! It's so rare for a youtuber DNA video to even discuss genetic matches, let alone reach out to matches, so your video was a lot of fun to watch. I definitely want to react to the video you mentioned where you are looking at your family tree documentation. The actual family tree and the family stories are the best part of this whole thing. I'm especially obsessed with connecting with my cousins! If you have any interest in being a part of my series where I trace family trees of youtubers, called RUclipsr Family Trees on my main channel @GeneaVlogger, definitely let me know!

    I contacted a match back in 2020, it turned out she was my dad’s 2nd cousin. Meeting her allowed me to see photos of my 2x Gr. Grandparents, and my Gr. Grandmother ‘s siblings which I never knew existed. It also led me to meet another 2nd cousin of my dad (also a dna match to me, and the 1st cousin of the match I reached out to).
    I connected both of them with my dad’s cousins that they had last seen when they were kids, about 60yrs ago. By reaching out to the match it led to us, and other cousins, zooming for about a yr and a half (since we couldn’t meet in person due to travel restrictions). The zoom calls led to a mini-family reunion with a bunch of us meeting up for about a week to visit the cemeteries and the old family homesteads last year.

    I've been having tons of fun piecing where people belong in my tree. Everywhere from about 700-800cm all the way down to about 50cm. I think the reason it has been so fun though is that aside from a small handful of individuals I've gotten to know a little bit, the entire family, depending on what branch, is still living in the space area & burying their family in the same cemeteries as they were 100 years ago... 150 years ago. I think what helps though is that the women in my family seem to have babies late in life. Very few early 20s which stretches out those generations. It's really amusing to me to have people that are of the same birth generation as I am & they're the same age as my parents. But I have absolutely slotted in the 3rd cousin 3x removed & enjoyed every minute of the puzzle & the pursuit. It really, TRULY, is so helpful to even have the bones of a tree to work off of.

    Interesting that you reacted to this, I've been watching Clisare's channel a lot and have never seen this video!!! It looks from a while ago though, she looks so much younger in this video than she does now. She was on the TRY channel as well, where say Irish People might try South American snacks or Japanese whisky. On her own channel she often does cultural things like going to festivals, visiting different parts of Ireland, she's from County Mayo but lives in Dublin, she's a good craic!!! I did think this was going to be her saying how no one replied to her so it was nice to see her actually chatting with a close relative and a more distant one who had no idea where the common link was.

    I talked to a match to my adopted Grandfathers family. She gave me the name of a County History that told the whole story of how they settled In Michigan in 1833. And how they traveled from Ireland to Detroit. In the 1890’s there was a big fad of counties hiring historians to write Histories before the Turn of the Century. They listed all the people who help positions and who could vote. Where everyone lived, occupations and how they died.

    One thing I’d like to point out about generations is just because you have a big age difference doesn’t mean you can’t be of the same family generation. My first cousin Debbie is almost 30 years older than me and all three of her sons are older than me but genealogically we are of the same generation

    • @Happydancer9
      @Happydancer9 8 месяцев назад +1

      Indeed. I have an maternal cousin (about 25 years older) whose daughter is 8 years older than me. My mother was 8 at the time my cousin was born, so it can happen. Interesting age gaps.

    I have subscribed to Clare's channel for many years. I am sure I recall her mentioning her ethnicity because, probably like a number of Irish people, she was worried that it may have shown her to be mostly English. Again if my memory is correct she was predominantly Irish.

    Excellent video. I love reaching out to my DNA matches. We can usually confirm our common ancestor by also comparing our trees. (Ancestry now offers that feature.) The most interesting match for me was a confirmation of Mayflower ancestors. I am Canadian and was shocked to discover this in my tree. I was convinced I had made an error until I found several American DNA cousins who shared the same ancestors. I messaged one cousin who checked and told me it wasn't a mistake. There are several DNA cousins who I remain in contact with. (mostly from UK, Australia and New Zealand.) We have shared family photos and documents. Most are 2x to 4x great grandparents.DNA has also revealed and also confirmed a few family secrets/mysteries. I really enjoy your videos and look forward to the next one! Thank you.

      Wow, that’s cool. I haven’t been as lucky with my DNA matches, only 2 have responded. The first was a clear match to my father’s mother’s side 😃 The second was no clear path to our match, but I guess it could be endogamy as we are island people.

      @@loislewis5229 I had one that didn't reply even though I noticed she had copied many photos from my gallery. 😆 I''m thrilled to share but a bit disappointed she didn't respond. I've also had many matches message me before I had a chance, It's fun to touch base and share information. I don't expect any more than that.

    Yes, MyHeritage has a more European clientele. Even so, I'd be willing to bet that MOST of the people in their database are Americans. DNA testing is really an American thing. Among Europeans, there just isn't the same level of interest in DNA testing.

    My paternal grandmother's, paternal side (2 x gr-grandfather, John Rennick) was from Co. Monaghan, Ireland. From my research it looks like they immigrated to the Glasgow area of Scotland, during the Potato Famine. I haven't been able to go back very far in Ireland, the earliest document I have is the marriage of John's parents (Richard Rennick and Christiana Madill), Jan 4, 1831. I have taken 23andme and AncestryDNA tests and uploaded the DNA to other sites. The matches for my paternal side are not very close. The matches on my mother's are a lot closer.

  • @brendanl8390

    I’m Irish American. Almost 100% Irish ancestry and almost all my DNA matches are from branches in the US. I tested on ancestry and uploaded to the rest. 2 of my grandparents were born in Ireland so I have a lot of cousins I know there. They just don’t test as often

  • @gmalcolms
    @gmalcolms Месяц назад

    Estimating a relationship by using empirical data tends to be biased toward underestimating your relationship, because most people know how they're related to close cousins but not distant cousins and you have far more distant cousins than close cousins. So for low cM matches this tends to underestimate how close you are to your DNA match. A better approach involves calculating shared DNA distributions for different kinds of relationships and estimating how many different cousins of various degrees someone is likely to have, but this requires a lot of assumptions about how many children a woman was likely to have had on average at various points in the past.

  • @philipbutler6608
    @philipbutler6608 8 месяцев назад

    The reason people can’t figure it out is because they don’t bother to fill out a tree and it’s not something you can do in your head. Especially when you have families with naming conventions and they repeatedly reuse names. It’s not hard to make a tree with all your great grand parents and it will help you so much.

  • @philipbutler6608
    @philipbutler6608 8 месяцев назад

    You can do ten tests if you don’t post your known family trees you won’t be able to match cousins. And there is always the possibility that there is the one cousin with a document to your brick wall. I hate when I look at a family tree and it’s all private living people and they don’t do great grand parents.

    Ive been able to figure out quite a lot of matches only two of those are above 100 cm most of them around 50 and below unfortunately. I’ve been giving my matches colours so at some point I might find out who the father of my great great grandmother was. There are a few matches that relate to that side but unfortunately I don’t get a reply from those matches. Than again they are somewhere in Texas and might not have a clue where their ancestors came from in Europe.

    Trying to find my dad's dad when both are deceased. My heritage has 15k+ matches from Ftdna upload and 19k+ matches from Ancestry. Why so different? My dad's dad is now from Ireland. I'm on geni, and all the sites u regularly mention. Cept 23 and me because I can't upload. How to get you to do my family tree from my dad's side?
