Simple Minds and Icehouse have a lot in common and tie in together. Icehouse got Simple Minds to tour Australia with them in 1981, and Simple Minds got Icehouse to tour with them in Europe the following year (so I believe). Both bands were driven by ambitious figureheads. Both acts had commercial success in Australia and Europe, and minor success in the US. Icehouse's first US hit was ''Hey Little Girl'' in 1982 (check it out). Both bands being New Wave meant they were on the periphery in the US market. Simple Minds big US break came with ''Don't You Forget About Me'' (a song not written by them) and ''Alive And Kick'' and Icehouse big US break came with ''Electric Blue'' and '"Crazy''. Iva Davies (Icehouse singer) spoke in an interview about having a meal in Sydney with Jim Kerr (Simple Minds singer), and talking about their mixed feelings about their US hits. Jim Kerr, more so, feels that ''Don't You Forget About Me'' is like having a successful adopted child (something that ot that effect). It's like a golden goose that he didn't make himself.
The reference to "electric blue" was inspired by an old 1970s song by T-Rex called "Jewel" that referred to a woman's thoughts being "gold" and her eyes being "electric blue" and Iva was really struck by that imagery! He co wrote this song with John Oates of Hall and Oats fame and if Icehouse hadn't released it, it would have been a Hall and Oates hit instead.....thank you for this reaction Mike I haven't heard this song for far too long and I love it - it brings back so many memories of the wonderful 80's back when I was very young and carefree....we really knew how to enjoy ourselves back then and I personally think the music of that decade reflects that and is some of the best out there♥
Icehouse are an amazing band, lots of great songs. "Electric Blue" and "Crazy" are outliers in that they were (as intended) mainstream pop. Generally Icehouse was new wave / art pop, wearing their Bowie and Roxy Music influences on their sleeve. I'd recommend Hey Little Girl (US version has a front and centre Bass line), Great Southern Land, Man Of Colours (either original or the Michael Paynter version), Stay Close Tonight, Street Cafe, Dusty Pages, Love In Motion
This song was co written by John Oates from Hall and Oates and he also does the backing vocals . He told Iva Davies the lead singer if he didn’t release the song Hall and Oates would . As a 16yo when this was out the girl in the video really did it for me and 35 years later I’m afraid she still does 😂 Check out “Crazy” by Icehouse but it has to be the Australian video clip also”Great Southern Land “
I love this song too Mike! The music video was made on the roof of the New South Wales Teachers Federation building in Sydney. As a teacher, that's a bit cool! I saw Icehouse perform in 2019 and they were awesome :D
Ooh I got excited seeing this one come up. Haven't heard this group in forever. So I will settle in to watch. And go back and look at the others I may have missed ...
This just took me back to the 80,s. I remember exactly who I was dating, where I was driving, and what I was wearing when I heard this on the car radio.
Ice House was great. Mike while you're on the 80's classic Aussie rock, I really think you'll love Mondo Rock's classic "Come Said The Boy" (1984). I don't think there is an Aussie alive that doesn't love it.
ICEHOUSE great Aussie band they was massive in Australia from 1980 through the early 90’s Great songs We Can Get Together Great Southern Land Don’t Believe Anymore Crazy Miss Divine The Keyboardist Andy Qunta was one the co-writers of John Farnham’s hit single You’re The Voice
G'day This is just another of the Australian songs we had to listen to on the radio as the DJ had to play Austrailian content. We had many good artists to listen to.
Oh yeah! Great band, great song, ultimate, death defying mullet. Icehouse are amazing and singer Iva Davies, is supernatural, because he is still as beautiful now (minus the mullet). I guess their biggest hit was 'Great Southern Land' but it's not my favourite (it's good though), but 'Crazy', 'Man Of Colours', 'We Can Get Together', 'Can't Help Myself', the list is too long but there's a few. Thanks for giving this great band a listen. Love Ya!
I'm truly surprised you haven't got around to covering anything by the Divinyls. There are some classics like All the Boys in Town, Pleasure & Pain, I Touch Myself, Sleeping Beauty, I'm Jealous etc.. I'm Jealous has one of the greatest lyrics of all time "I might kick her face in" 🤣 Its premium Aussie 80's stuff and worth a reaction.
It's always good to be taken back into the past to a place in time when life was easy and the music was much better than the present day rubbish they put out. Love his hair too.
It was fate! I finally connected the dots! Trust me, I have been blaring this for three straight days! I uploaded it on the 16th but it was banned for three days due to copyright. It JUST lifted! And not a moment too soon!
It was banned for copyright on me channel for three straight days until literally an hour ago and BAM HERE IT IS! I have been listening to it almost endlessly!
I was a huge Ice House fan back in the good old days. My favorite song of there's was Jimmy Dean. ruclips.net/video/piwIzw9KraM/видео.html I hope that link works. Keep up the good work big fella.

Wow, that is great to know! I love Hall and Oates so, it makes sense that I love Icehouse!!!
I just found you today and working my way through your playlist. This song is my era I love it 💕 thanks for the reaction
Glad you enjoyed!

Underrated Australian band in the pre-90s peak

I didn't know that, but you can really hear the Hall and Oates inspiration in it!
Your reaction when you recognised the song was fantastic, I loved it and your enthusiasm for some things is infectious lol
I love this song too Mike! The music video was made on the roof of the New South Wales Teachers Federation building in Sydney. As a teacher, that's a bit cool! I saw Icehouse perform in 2019 and they were awesome :D

It made me unreasonably happy to watch you react to this. A child of the 80s, the album, Man of Colours, was my first cd purchase!
Another great Aussie band....one of the best mullets ever...
It's so amazing when you find an old tune that you only remember a chord or two and BAM! Iva Davies is an amazing singer still.
This just took me back to the 80,s. I remember exactly who I was dating, where I was driving, and what I was wearing when I heard this on the car radio.
You must review “Great southern land”
Won’t disappoint, the sound, the lyrics and the scenes from the video.
A must do.

The Keyboardist Andy Qunta was one the co-writers of John Farnham’s hit single You’re The Voice
Wow! It all comes full circle!
Iva Davies’s mullet crosses the line between a mere haircut and a tonsorial topiary!
MEGA KUDOS to the Priscilla poster on your wall
Was so in love with Iva back in the day... still am tbh. Your reaction was priceless Mikey 😂💙
G'day This is just another of the Australian songs we had to listen to on the radio as the DJ had to play Austrailian content.
We had many good artists to listen to.
The entire Electric Blue album is excellent
